FloraVistaElementarySchool,recognizedasaCaliforniaDistinguishedSchool,openedin
Julyof1979andisoneofnineelementaryschoolsintheEncinitasUnionSchoolDistrict.FloraVista'sattendanceareaservestheVillageParkareaofEncinitas,acity
situatedalongthenorthcoastofSanDiegoCountyandoftenreferredtoasthe"Surfand
FlowerCapitaloftheWorld”.Theschoolserves458studentsingradesKindergartenthroughsixthgradeonamodifiedyear-roundcalendar,andhousesanEarlyIntervention
PreschoolandYMCAPreschoolProgram.AtFloraVista,ourstudentsbenefitfromanewlydevelopedfocusof“LeadershipinCivicsandScience”,withmuchofourappliedlearning
takingplaceattheintersectionofthosetwofoci.Ourprofessionaldevelopmentisfocused
onimprovingstudentachievementintheseandotherareasthatbringthecriticalthinkingandinformationliteracyworkoftheCommonCoreStandardsintoourstudents’lives.
Studentsbenefitfromatechnology-rich1:1deviceenvironment.Enrichment
opportunitiesareavailabletoallstudents,bothinandoutoftheweeklyGradeLevelProfessionalDevelopmenttime(“Wheel”):Music,Drama/Theater,Yoga,Science,andP.E.

WritingAchievement:AnalysisofDataInOctober2015,ourTLCdiscussedtheissueofmeasuringwritingachievement,andagreedonadefinitionofwritingproficiencyforpurposesofSPSAmonitoring,whichisthatstudentswouldbeproficientacrossalltexttypesandassessedareasontheStandards-BasedReportCard.ThisdefinitionwasusedbecauseSBRCgradeswillinherentlyincorporatemultiplemeasuresofwriting,astheyarethesumofateacher’sevaluationofastudent’sperformanceinwriting.(Previously,assessmentofwritingforSPSApurposesusedasingleon-demandwritingassignment,andtherewasnodatacollectedin2014-15.)TheconsensuswasthatthischangewouldhelpinformstaffPDinteachingandassessingwriting.Ourgoalfor2015-2016was80%ofstudentsmeetingproficiency,andthisgoalwasmet,at81%.

FloraVistaScienceAchievement:
AnalysisofData
InOctober2015,ourTLCdiscussedtheissueofmeasuringachievementinScience.Similartothediscussionofwriting,itwasagreedthatthedefinitionofproficiencyinScienceforpurposesofSPSAmonitoringwasthatstudentswouldbeproficientinScienceontheStandards-BasedReportCard,becauseSBRCgradesinherentlyincorporatemultiplemeasuresandarethesumofateacher’sevaluationofstudentperformance.TheconsensuswasthatthischangewouldhelpinformstaffPDinteachingscienceandassessingachievement.Ourgoalfor2015-2016was80%proficiency,andthisgoalwasmet,at92.8%.

StudentsMeetingCELDTExpectations=OneProficiencyLevelGrowth,2015-2016to2016-2017:MeetingExpectations:3studentsNotMeetingExpectations:5studentsTrenddatafortheeightstudentsforwhomwehadtwoyears’datawouldbeirrelevant,soinsteadtheannualgrowthexpectationsfortheeightindividualstudentsisreportedanddiscussed.Whiletoosmallasampletodrawconclusionsatthesitelevel,thedatadoesmirrorlargertrendsinELachievement,trendsfromwhichstrategiesforoursitecanbeextrapolated.First,wehaveEnglishLearnersthataregetting“stuck”attheIntermediatelevel.Historically,thisisoftenduetolackofopportunitiesfortheuseofrigorousacademiclanguageineachofthefourlanguagedomains(reading,writing,listening,speaking).Thisisworkthatsupportsalllearners,butisespeciallynecessaryforourEnglishLearnersaswetrytomovethemtowardsredesignation.Second,wehadanumberofEnglishLearnersthatenteredFloraVistawithnoexperienceatallwithEnglish.Thisrequiresamorespecializedrangeofstrategiesandresources,andissomethingweneedtoexpandupon.
