Piracy Trends in the GoATactics, Techniques and Procedures

Expanding Pirate Hunting Ground

• Expanding operating areas beyond Somalia - Pirates operating up to 1400nm , often outside the reach of patrolling coalition assets.

• Hostages used as “human shield” to hinder military disruption efforts.

• Continued use of dhows as “mothership” to evade detection and extend operating area.

• Comparing with 2010, last year saw an increase in pirate attempts but decrease in pirated ships.

• Currently, the pirates are holding on to 5 ships (154 hostages) at their pirate anchorages (as compared to 45 ships in 2010.)
