The Sawtell Club was hosted by the Woolgoolga Rotary Club to visit the new Sikh Heritage Museum of Australia. The Museum opened its doors in April this year . Founded by Guru Nanak in the 15th century and based on his teachings and those of 10 subsequent gurus, Sikhism is the world's fifth-largest organised religion. In Woolgoolga, 300 families worship at the gurdwara (temple) . Uncut hair (kesh) and comb (kanga) are two of the five "Ks" worn by baptised Sikhs; the others are circular bangles (kara), symbol- ising God's eternity; a small double edged sword (kirpan), represent- ing day and night; and under shorts (kachera). The Sikh Gurus taught that women and men are equal. Women and men pray together. Women can work, lead congregations and be preachers. Sikhs first came to Australia to work in the cane fields of north Queensland, but started to settle in Woolgoolga in 1890. Before World War II, Punjabi Sikhs were given three rights above any other migrants in Australia. The right to vote; right to a pension, and the third most important right, to bring their dependents to Australia.
