This is for historical records and currentinformation. It brings together the infor-mation formerly contained in the SidecarCatalog, 1988, with information currentlyavailable on the WWW, 2003.

No attempt is made to discuss mountingtechniques or driving styles or safetyconsiderations. These are adequatelytreated in companion volumes.

All About the USCAThe United Sidecar Association Inc. is an independent organization of enthusiasts who own motorcycles with sidecars attached, ranging from theluxurious Harley-Davidson to the classic Steib, from contemporary Watsonians to futuristic Side Riders, and from racing kneelers to homemadehacks". They are attached to all machines, from the magnificent Harley-Davidson to the humble scooter. The members are varied as their ma-chines, from the youngest in their late teens to our senior enthusiasts in their eighties. The Association began in Chicago in 1976 and spread rapidlythroughout the United States and abroad as sidecarists learned of our organization, our expertise, and our ability to speak up for sidecarists onpolitical issues. Our successes include rolling back turnpike toll charges on all turnpikes in the United States for motorcycle-sidecar outfits and thedevelopment of Sidecar Instruction Training Programs.

The Sidecarist, the world's most knowledgeable monthly sidecar publication, is written by and for sidecar enthusiasts, and is part of your member-ship. You will find great variety in the Sidecarist, including articles on driving, alignment, and mounting. There are letters from members, construc-tion features, technical articles, and news of and about members and events. There are sections from local chapters prepared by their directors;and we communicate and work with other sidecar clubs throughout the world. There is an extensive classified section for members where theymake known what they wish to buy, sell, or exchange. You also share in sidecar rallies. In short, the Sidecarist keeps you in touch with thousandsof sidecar owners.

Everything appeals to sidecar owners, drivers and passengers, as well as sldecar mechanics and engineers. While exchange of technical data isalways important in discussions about sidecars, the association's activities encompass many interests. Events include an Association rally, areamini-rallies, local meets, just plain kicking tires, museum tours, and picnics. There is always something happening in the USCA and membership isas enjoyable as driving an outfit.

The USCA keeps you informed, it provides you with another view point about sidecaring as it is the largest independent sidecar group in the world.The USCA is an informed club. The members prefer to be without the usual trimmings found in other motorcycle organizations. You will find itrefreshing to belong to a group where your ideas are welcome and there is no pressure to be active, but where your participation and help is alwaysappreciated. This informal atmosphere has made the USCA the largest sidecar club and has generated much enthusiasm and interest from therest of the sidecar world. Membership in the USCA is extended to all sidecar owners, dealers, manufacturers, and enthusiasts.

IntroductionAlmost every model, size and make of motorcycle has been fitted toalmost every type of sidecar but it is more difficult today than it oncewas. Historically, when sidecaring was extremely popular themotorcycle manufacturers included built-in attachment points for asidecar. Often they offered their own sidecars or had sidecars builtto their specifications. Today, most motorcycle manufacturersappear to have forgotten their motorcycles once provided primarytransportation for families, trades persons, service companies, autorecovery units and the armed forces of most countries when fittedwith a sidecar. Never has a single unit been so effective and soversatile.

Harley-Davidson is the only major motorcycle in America that ma~es amotorcycle-sidecar outfit. Austel in England will fabricate a special heavyduty motorcycle for sidecar operation using the English Squire. TheAmazonas of Brazil can also be fitted with a sidecar. And, machinessuch as the MZ of the E~st German Republic, the Ural or Dnepr orJawa or Neval) of Russia, the Chang-Jiang, or Xingfu or Donghai ofChina, can still be obtained with a factory sidecar. The last mentionedare very popular in third worid countries where low cost dependablebasic transportation is essential.

Because mainstream motorcycle manufacturers do not offer side-cars or motorcycles that can be easily fitted with a sidecar, therehas arisen an ever-growing secondary market in Europe that buildsheavy duty frames and suspens~ns for motorcycle/sidecar outfits.One popular example is the EML made in Holland and imported intoAmerica by EML, St. Louis, now XXXXXXXX

However, the majority of sidecars in America are still fitted in thetraditional manner. A motorcycle, the choice of the owner is "mar-ried" to the sfdecar of choice. And a wide variety of sidecars are

available. Watsonian (English) has been regularly imported toAmerica since the Fifties and is still imported by Side Strider ofCalifornia. Another popular import is the Veloex which is ideal formedium size motorcycles. Both Motorvation and California Sidecar,Inc., have a wide variety of sidecar models to choose from.

As you brouse through this catalog keep in mind that the initialinstallation of a sidecar may not be as easy as one would like. Allmounts must be installed on the main frame which may requireremoval or modification of fairings, covers, rear bags and so forth.Installation of a sidecar creates very large forces on cornering andnon-structural members such as rear suspension mounts, bag bars,crash bars, pillion footrests and so on, are not designed to withstandthese large external forces. And, for better sidecar performance,some have changed tires, wheels, suspension, brakes, trail, frontends, rear gear ratios, helper frames, friction dampers and so forth.Not all are essential but each modification usually improves sidecarperformance at the expense of solo handling.

1. AUSTEL-ENGLANDAustel produces acustom motorcycledesigned for sidecaroperation. Manycomponents are ofautomobile originsuch as the 1300Leyland engine with afour speed manual gearbox with reverse gear, car tires and brakes, carsize drive couplings, and so forth. It is also available in kit form. Leadinglink forks are standard. It is currently available with a Squire sidecar.Price - approximately $8000.

2. BENDER - DENMARKThe Bender is a limited production classic Danish sidecar. Productionceased in thelate sixtiesthen broughtback intoproductionbriefly. It canbe fitted tocycles to 32HP. Weight -187 Ibs. Loadcapacity - 253lbs. Wheel -18".

3. BIKE-MATE -S. AFRICAThe Bike Mate is madeby QED and distributedby Road Classics ofJohannesburg. Severalstyles of fibreglassbodies may be fittedwithin the wrap-around chassis with a sturdy roll bar. Modelsinclude a single seater with trunk, a full tandem dual seater and adelivery box. Suspension is provided by a rubber torsion system.

4. BINGHAM - U.S.A.Bingham has produced sidecars in America since the mid-sixties.While the MK I, an early model Velorex look alike, is no longer inproduction, his latest is an on/off road machine designed for ruggedapplication to military specifications. It is available in civilian ormilitary configuration.

5. BINGHAM MK II - U.S.AThe Bingham MK IIwas the second in thesuccessful seriesintrouced by Bingham,it used the sameframe as the MK I butused a more aerody-namic styled body.Body width, includingbuilt-in fender was29.5". Suitable formiddle weight ma-chines. Weight - 160lbs.

6. BINGHAM MK III - U.S.A.This is the third version of the Bingham Series and uses a similarchassis as the earlier versions. Body also in fibreglass. Weight -175 lbs. Successfully fitted to middleweight machines.

7. CALIFORNIA SIDECAR - U.S.A.Side Kick - the smallestsidecar designedexclusively for motorscooters such as theRiva, Elite and Vespaand for step-thrus suchas the Honda C-70Passports. This uniquelightweight sidecarturns your scooter orstepthru into a superaround town workhorsethat is a joy to ride in. Weight - 85 Ibs. Tinted windshield. 11. CARELL - WEST GERMANYCarell is a specialistwho loves to discussthe finer points ofsidecar construction toprospective purchas-ers. His new sidecar,the Mistral, is a sporty,roomy, low slungmodel. The unitshown, the TR500 isdesigned after theclassical Steib.

12. CHETAK - INDIAThe Bajaj-Chetak is made in India by Bajaj under license fromVespa. While it only produces 6 HP it can pull the small sidecar atspeeds upto 50 mph.It providesinexpen-sive nofrillstransporta-tion.Flowerpaint job isextra.

13. CORDA - SWEDENThe ultimate state ofthe art street side-carmachine. Now fittedwith a turbo-charged1.6 liter VW dieselengine and VWautomatic transmis-sion. All wheels driven,including sidecarwheel and front wheel.Weight and handlingcharacteristics are thatof a small fast sportscar. Curves to right and left with equal ease. Most components adaptedfrom auto industry for maximum reliability. Not inexpensive.

14. DELPHIN - WEST GERMANYThe Delphin is usually mounted onto Moto Guzzis. The trunk optionmay be replacedwith a seat for achild to accommo-date a family offour. The sidecarweight 198 ibs andis designed for 320lbs load. Theconvertible top isremovable for fairweather driving.

15. DNEPR - U.S.S.R.The two basic modelsare the MT16 (formerlyMT10) and the MT11(formerly MT-12). TheMT16 has a drivensidecar wheel andreverse gear whichmakes it unbeatablefor off-road use. TheMT11 features conven-tional single rear wheeldrive. The boxer type engine delivers only 27 HP from the 650 or750cc engine so cruising speed is just 62.5 mph.

16. DONGHAI - CHINAThe Donghai is made in China. It uses a 750cc boxer style engineof 27 HP. The relatively low power provides a very long lasting unitthat can withstand much abuse It is exported in low numbers toEurope. Anoth-er version inChina is avirtual replicaof the W.W.IIBMW RI2. And,a vertical twinis also avail-able.

17. EGLI - SWITZERLANDFritz Egli, theSwiss championracer and tuner,matches theAmerican VetterTerraplane toSuzukis from 1100to 1400 ccs (100 to135 HP), theSuzukis remain instock trim. Theoutfits are tailored for individuals wanting that perfect tracking three-wheeler machlnes. They are still considered as a motorcycle withsidecar.

18. EML . WEST GERMANYThe EML Sport, fitted to a Kawasaki 1300 six cylinder, is a verysporty sidecar outfit. Top speed is 100 mph. The 15" EML solid steelspoke wheels willwithstand the hugecornering forces.The top is hingedto allow for easyaccess. The side-car in kit form costsabout one-half thatof the completeoutfit.

19. EML - WEST GERMANYThe EML Tourwhen mated to aHonda GoldWing, can bedriven at speedsup to 100 mph.Even with theroomy sidecarattached to the 85HP Gold Wing theoutfit helps retainits sporty manners. An optional extra fuel tank can be fitted to thesidecar. Frame modifications are not required if fitted to a MotoGuzzi.

20. EML - WEST GERMANYThe EML GT II is a modern fibreglass sidecarwith aerodynamicdesign. A slightly smaller version is the MIDI. They perform verywell with many types of motorcyles.

EQUALEAN - U.S.A.The Equalean, a leanablesidecar, have been seensince the turn of the cen-turey The Equalean differsfrom most flexibles in thatthe sidecar wheel is inboardof the sidecar, the rearsupport rides in a curvedtrack while the front issupported by a parallelo-gram linkage. It is driven likea solo motorcycle.

22. EZS - HOLLANDThe EZS (Enghers Zijspan Service) is imported from Holland. It con-tains lots of trunk space without appearing overly plump. It has a largewindshieldsimilar to thatof the EMLfrom which itwas de-signed. Themodel shownis the TP2. Itcan be fittedwith twochild's seats.A hydraulicdisc brake isstock.

23. FINNTOUR - FINLANDThe Finntourincorporates amodern aerody-namic design infibreglass with a 40x 40mm steelframe. There isplenty of seatingroom and a largestorage compart-ment. The luxurymodel includes alight, radio/cassette, telephone and clock, Also designed as asleeper. Uses a 135- SRI3 auto tire.

24. GAZELLE - CANADAThe Gazelle features a 1-1/4" square steel reinforced perimeter framwith an integral roll bar. The body is of a woven mat fibreglass with alockable trunk. Thetonneau top hasside windows. Theseat has a built-inheadrest andsafety belt. Sus-pension is providedby a trailing armwith coil spring andshock absorber.Tire is A78 x 13.

25.GLOBE - INDIAThe Globe sidecarsoffer low costdependable side-cars after theclassic Steibtradition. Thesmallest in this lineis suitable forscooters, hereshown fitted to aVespa. Imported inAmerica throughSidestrider.

26. GLOBE - INDIAThe Globe GS200 is an almost perfect copy of the traditional LS200Steib. At 165 lbs it is ideal for middleweight machines from 450 to 650cc such as the BMW /5 and /6 models. Trunk space is behind the seatand a luggage rack can be fitted. A very sporty and sleek design.

27. GLOBE - INDIAThe Globe 350uses a similarframe to the GlobeGS200 but thebody is similar tothe traditional SteibS350 or the Watso-nian GP. Thismodel is found onlarger touringmachines in the650 to 750cc range.It is an ideal single seater sports touring sidecar.

28. GOOD ONE - U.S.A.The Good One is made to order on a 1-1/4" heavy steel chassis. Astorage agea of nearly3 cu ft is behind the tiltforward seat. The155SR13 auto tire issuspended by a swingarm controlled by ashock absorber.Mounting designincludes a three pointattachment with amanual or electric leanadjuster for neutralsteering. The 21" wideseat will accommodate two small children or one large adult.

30. HANNIGAN - CANADAThe elegant Classic at 160 ibs is a lighter version of the traditional TR500Steib. The lighter construction is the result of using a hand-laid fibreglass body.The frame is of 2" steel tube. Suspension is provided by torsion bar. A threepoint adjustablemount can befitted or thetraditional fourpoint system.The seat iseasily removedto allow utilityusage.

31. HARLEY-DAVIDSON - U.S.A.The RLE Sidecarfeatures traditionalHarley styling. It fits all1982 and later FXRTSport Glides andFXRT police units. Ithas a 300 lb loadcapacity. All sidecarconnections, covers,windshields, and W.W.tires are standard, including the sidecar wheel brake. Addi-tionalinformation from any authorized Harley-Davidson dealer.

32. HARLEY-DAVIDSON - U.S.A.Harley-Davision Sidecars are engineered to provide versatile andsatisfying performance. The TLE fits FL-type touring models and isbuilt to H-D's high standards. Features sturdy fibreglass construc-tion with a thickly padded seat, cushioned side rails and internalpassenger footrest. Snapdown tonneau cover, windscreen andsidecar wheel brake are standard. 29A. HARTMANN - WEST GERMANYThe HartmannDreamliae issimilar to theTerraplane (USA)but has a shortnose, forward liftentry, full fendermoulding, sidecarchassis andlighting. It isequipped with aKoni shock andhas a Brembo disc brake. A gas tank is optional. Weight - 254 ibs. Loadcapacity - 300 lbs.

30A. HEDDINGHAM - ENGLANDThe Hedingham is the brain child of Keith Wash of Unit Sidecars.This sidecar includes a heavy duty 2" steel tubing chassis, a 4 ozfibreglass body,torsion bar suspensionand a disc brakeoption. Plenty of legroom is available andthe seat width is 20". Atonneau cover and ahood are available.The moulded dashcan accommodate aradio. Leading linkforks are available.

31A. HECHARD - FRANCEHechard produces afull line of sidecarswith many accesso-ries. Lightweight,convertible andsedan models. Alsoavailable as atandem seat modelqr as a double widthmodel. The frame isof 40 x 40mm steeltubing. Suspension is by swinging arm with an Ohlins shock ab-sorber.

HECHARD - FRANCEAccessories for the Hechard include a leading link front fork assem-bly, luggage bags and top box (for the motorcycle), fairings, rollbars, crash bars, hydraulic disc brake and an alloy wheel (standardon some mod-els). The weightvaries from 175lbs to 250 lbsaccording tomodel selected.Wheels de-signed for 15"auto tires.

33. HITCHHIKER - U.S.A.The Hitchhik-er wasdesigned andbuilt by BobLoberg ofMinnesota.The bodyshell is ofchopper-gunfibreglassreinforcedwith 3/8" plywood. The smaller unit (95 lbs) with a 400-12 auto-type tireand wheel is for smaller machines while the larger (145 lbs) with a 3.25-18 motorcycle type tire and wheel is for larger units, Now made by PatSheehy of Ohio.

34. HMO - WEST GERMANYThe HMO is an elegant sidecar with a small entrance door. The Swissmanufactureruses a specialframe around theBoxer motor topermit the BMWto be used forsidecar work.The outfit, builtby Hegi He-gitschweiler, hasa top speed of94 mph.

35. HRD - AUSTRALIAHis "Grand Rally"sidecars come inthree widths: single -22,8" one and one-half 27.5", anddouble - 33". Fea-tures a full lengthchasis llockable 10cu in locker, Konisuspension, fullcarpeting and velourseats. Optionsinclude foot operated sidecar wheel parking brake, all weather top,crash bars and air suspension.

36. JEANIEL - FRANCEJeaniel began to build sidecar units in 1981 and first showed hissidecars at the IFMA in 1986. He stole the show with the JeanielLynx coupled to the Yamaha V-Max. This sidecar resembles a bedroom slipper. Ofthe four modelsoffered two are 2-seaters. Optionsinclude specialsub frames formotorcycles,leading linkfrontforks and 15"wheel conversionkits

37. JEWELL - FRANCEJewell begansidecars in1977. Theyshowed theirmodel, a J2P,at the IFMAShow in1986. TheJ2P weighs187 Ibs, the'Junior' is 132ibs, and their'Universal" is165 lbs. The chassis is made of box tubing, The German importer isWalter who also handles the Guzzi.

38. KENT - ENGLANDKent sidecars are made by Martello Plastics. The basic unit is asingle pas-senger sedanmodel withaccess byopening thecombinationdoor/top. Anauto typewheel andtire is used.

39. KOCH - WEST GERMANYKoch produces theBMW K-100 RoyalSport, the top ofthe line, for clients.Their collectionincludes classicand older modelswhich can beviewed or pur-chased. Koch alsokeeps spare partsfor older models.

40. MOTORVATION - U.S.A.Motorvation brings several novel concepts to sidecaring. One option iswhere the entire body is hinged at the rear. Upon lifting and proppingopen a sleeper tent is created. Another option is where the front sectionis hinged and opens up to permit easy entry. 81. BEIWAGEN - JAPANSidecars in Japan.Sidecar development istypically a home orcottage industry. All thatis required is a weldingjig, pipe and a goodwelder to produce arobust frame. Any-skilledartesian can produce a wooden, steel or fibre-glass body. Sidecars,traditionally, stay in the country of origin. An example is Australia. WhileAustralia never produced motorcycles, they did produce sidecars.

82. FREEWAY - JAPANUnlike Australia and most other countries, Japan's bureaucracydetermined that, because different handling skills were requiredwhen a sidecar outfit was turned to the left, or turned to the right, adomestic built sidecar was unsafe. However, a foreign built sidecarwas safe. This convoluted logic did not discourage sidecar use inJapan. Sidecars from many countries filled the void created by thelack ofdomesticcompeti-tion.

83. KUMAGAYA - JAPANAmong the foreignsidecars to enterJapan were the Dnieprfrom Russia. TheDniepr is also knownas the Neval in En-gland in the USA. TheChangiang and Xingfucome from China.From England camethe Watsonian and the Squire. From Australian the DJP wasextremely popular. The American Vetter was also seen in Japanwhile the Jawa from Czechoslovakia was not uncommon, themassive American Harley-Davidson has been imported privately.

84. MISTER - JAPAN.In spite of this, quite a few domestic sidecar manufacturers appeared.The domestic models were of four distinct types. There is the monkeydivision, more of a novelty than anything else, perhaps more suitable fora child but designed to accommodate an adult. In 1969 Doug Bingham formed The Side Strider Inc. company.What began was street sidecar outfits!

Aside from Harley Davidson who have been mfg. sidecars almostfrom day one, The Bingham MK-I was the first sidecar in severaldecades to be available to the general public.

The distinguishing mark in History was the article in the Dec. 1969issue of Popular Science Magazine.

Several years later, Doug Bingham took that BMW R60 with aproduction sidecar and raced it at the AMA National Sidecar RoadRace at the famous Laguna Seca circuit in California, Circa 1974.

With passenger Pam Stone riding quite comfortably, they finished ina creditable 10th place position.

Note: This is a stock BMW cycle with a street sidecar - racingagainst a full field of real road racing sidecars...

Interestingly enough, past British sidecar champion Eric Olivercompeted in the 1958 Isle of Man Sidecar T.T. race riding a NortonDominator 88 and a standard Watsonian Monaco. Oliver with hispassenger Pat Wise, nice and comfortable finished in the top ten fora bronze replica!

Doug’s knowledge of road racing sidecars and off road outfitsmade him a natural in this business.

In 1972, because of Doug’s expertise and first hand knowledgehe was approached by Watsonian Worlds oldest and best knownsidecar manufacturer to be their exclusive representative.

Motovation - SpyderThe Spyder sidecar is the best looking traditionally styled sidecar youcan buy. The Spyder is unique. It doesn’t look like any other sidecar andit’s not built like any other sidecar either. The Spyder is constructed witha fiberglass and steel plate laminate monocoque chassis. There is noexternal frame to get in the way of the clean look of a Spyder Sidecar.This chassis design makes the Spyder incredibly strong and durable,resulting in a really SAFE sidecar to ride in.

The base weight of a Spyder is 190 pounds making it a good match forbikes as small as 500cc. The over all body length is 75" with 52" of legroom. The width of the Spyder is 35" with the fender and wheel. Thecockpit opening is about 25" by 20". All the Spyder sidecars come with afully finished, upholstered interior and a contoured seat. The paddedside panels even have handy pockets built right into them. The rearlocking trunk has about 3.5 cu. ft of secure storage and can be fittedwith the optional 5 gallon fuel system.

The Spyder is all about solid engineering and lots of choices. TheSpyder suspension is a trailing swing arm with a Progressive Suspen-sion Magnumatic adjustable air/spring shock. Wheel and FenderChoices are up to you. The standards on the Spyder T-1 are a chromewire spoke wheel with a bolt on the body fender. The Spyder HD comeswith a Harley style fender. Custom wheel options include factory Harleymags and after market custom wheels. Motovation - Formula IIThe Formula II is the sidecar that started it all when it comes to a twopassenger sidecar that looks good and handles great too. The FormulaII was first sidecar to have an independent sidecar brake and a trimadjuster so it won’t pull to the right even with a passenger, in a headwind going up hill. The Formula II and it’s high tech sidecar innovationshas been imitated the world over, but never matched.

The Formula II has a sturdy external square tube ladder frame platform.The exclusive trailing swing arm, adjustable torsion bar suspensiongives the Formula II a comfortable ride that rivals many luxury cars. Thislarge sidecar will seat someone who is over 6 feet tall and weighing over250 pounds in comfort,. The Formula II can handle up to three smallchildren, or accommodate two teenage kids. There is almost 5 cubicfeet of storage behind the seat, and when you add the rear chrome folddown luggage rack, you can really “Take it all with you”. The foldingbench seat removes so all the space can be used for cargo or evensleeping. The optional front access “Flip Nose” option makes theFormula II the easiest sidecar to get into and out of anywhere.

Harley Evo FHL/FLT MountsAll the Evo 5 speed frames on the FLH/FLT models require aspecial mounting subframe for the safest and strongest sidecarmounts. This subframe also allows our sidecars to be mountedmuch further to the rear of the motorcycle than any other big twinFLH/FLT mounting set up we ave ever seen. Mounting the sidecartoward the rear, in relation to the motorcycle, makes a betterhandling rig. The weight is taken off the front end of the motorcyclefor easier steering. The rig also turns to the right easier since therear wheel of the motorcycle is more in line with the sidecar wheel.The farther forward the sidecar wheel is located, the more it scrubswhen you turn to the right. This is especially critical with large,touring sidecars such as our Formula II sidecar.
