Kansas City Exceptionalism

๏ฟฝ ere is โ€” or was, if you listen to the stylings of Donald Trump โ€” such a thing as "American ex-ceptionalism." I don't really know the textbook de๏ฟฝ nition of that phrase, or its etymology, but I'm pretty sure that American exceptionalism makes it OK if I don't look it up and just go from the gut on this one.

Here's a story: ๏ฟฝ ere was a great restaurant in Kansas City, long since gone because maybe it wasn't all that great, but one day the restaurant was pretty packed. In the door walks a notorious Kansas City football team executive and his excep-tional new wife. He wants a table. His reservation, he is informed, isn't for another 20 minutes. He

๏ฟฝ icks his le๏ฟฝ arm out as if he's pulling a switchblade, but it is not. It is an excep-tional timepiece ... it's Swiss, not American, but exceptional nonetheless.

"Yeah, well according to my $20,000 watch," he says to the hostess, "it's right now."

๏ฟฝ e hostess blinks, so I cannot say that she did not bat an eyelash because she did. And she had long, black eyelashes. I'm guessing they were fake, but her response was pretty genuine classic.

"Well ... I don't have a watch on, and I can tell you that it's always RIGHT NOW. And your table will be ready in 20 minutes. You're welcome to wait at the bar."

He narrows his eyes and growls like a cartoon villain, but he deserved that and so he retreats to the well-appointed bar. The football executive orders a Chardonnay. His wife looks at the cocktail board and inquires about a few of the drinks and their ingredients.

"What is triple sec?" she asks the bartender. His name is Sean. He is the best in the business. Truly exceptional.

"It's three times the amount of normal sec," he responds.

๏ฟฝ e executive narrows his eyes again and purses his lips. The wife is

bemused, waiting for the real answer I would think, but Sean doubles down.

"Single sec is very weak. We won't carry it here."

S h e g e t s t h e Cosmopolitan, and they both begin talking to other married couples, keeping Swiss time. Another bartender, Ally, is making a bright-red drink and conjuring up a name from Chiefs lore.

"What's that?" asks the football executive.

"It's the Len Dawson Cocktail," replies Ally. "It's one of our signature drinks."

"๏ฟฝ e Len Dawson!" the fo ot b a l l e xe c ut i ve narrows his eyes again. If he keeps that up, they're gonna stay that way per-manently.

"Yep," she says, dipping a straw into the pint glass, extracting a sample and o๏ฟฝ ering it up to the foot-ball executive, who leans over in a tentative manner.

"It tastes just like Len Dawson," she promises.

๏ฟฝ e bar has exception-al marble ๏ฟฝ oors. ๏ฟฝ ey're Italian. It's funny how you don't notice them when you walk in, because you're looking up, but when a football executive pushes backward on his barstool really fast, you can actually hear the dif-ference in the quality of ๏ฟฝ ooring. ๏ฟฝ ey don't even scratch.

Timing is everything. Waiting for him at the end of the screech is the hostess, two menus in hand. No doubt, an ex-ceptional time was had by all.

โ€œAs the school year begins, many students are thinking about whatโ€™s next. As a gradu-ate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, I am eager to provide information and assistance with nomina-tions to the military academies,โ€ Shimkus stated.

To be eligible for appoint-ment, you must be a United

Applications are accepted for the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York; U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.

Students interested in apply-ing may go to https://shimkus.house.gov/services/military-a c a d e my - n om i n at i on s . Completed applications have

Shimkus nominates to the academies; however, academy o๏ฟฝ cials actually make the ๏ฟฝ nal selection regarding admission. ๏ฟฝ ose accepted into an academy will be noti๏ฟฝ ed in early 2016.

โ€œI encourage young men and women with any level of inter-est to contact us now,โ€ Shimkus added. โ€œ๏ฟฝ ere are several steps in this process, and applications must be filed with both my o๏ฟฝ ce and online with the indi-vidual academies.โ€

During Liver Awareness Month this October, the American Red Cross en-courages eligible donors to give blood and platelets to support liver transplant pa-tients and others needing blood products.

Liver transplants are the second most common type of transplant with more than 6,000 performed in the U.S. each year, according to the American Liver Foundation. Liver transplant patients may require in excess of 30 pints of blood during surgery.

For blood donor Amy Slattery, the need for blood hits close to home. Her mother received a liver transplant and needed more than 70 blood products during the surgery.

โ€œI donate to help others that needed blood like her,โ€ said Slattery. โ€œI donate in thanks to those who donate their blood products to help

save lives.โ€ Volunteer donors like

Slattery are the only source of blood for those in need of transfusions during trans-plants and other surgeries. Donors with all blood types are needed, and especially those with types O negative, A negative, B negative and AB blood.

To make an appointment to donate blood, eligible donors are encouraged to download the new Red Cross Blood Donor App from app stores or text BLOODAPP to 90999 to receive a down-load link, visit redcross-blood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Upcoming blood dona-tion opportunities are listed below.

Je๏ฟฝ erson County: Oct. 1, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.,

Crossroads Community Hospital, 8 Doctors Park Rd., Mt. Vernon.

 Oct. 2, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Woodlawn High School, 300 North C entra l L ane, Woodlawn.

To donate blood simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reli-able supply for patients. A blood donor card or driverโ€™s license or two other forms of identi๏ฟฝ cation are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Before we know it, snow will be ๏ฟฝ ying and it will be Christmas cookie baking time. I love all four seasons, but my favorite is fall. I think it's because of the cool, crisp mornings; beautiful colors as the trees turn bright orange, yellow and crimson; warm woolly sweaters; the smells of soup on the back burner and fresh homemade bread; candlelight dinners; and of course, harvest moons. Some of my favorite dishes this time of year are below, so enjoy. I call it cooking up tradition.

Apple Orchard Salad2 large green apples, cored, 1/2 cup raisins unpeeled, and diced 1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted1 large red apple, cored, 1/4 cup mayonnaise unpeeled, and diced 1 tsp. sugar3 tablespoons lemon juice Lettuce leaves1/2 cup chopped celery

Sprinkle apples with lemon juice and toss gently to coat; drain. Combine apples, celery, raisins, and pecans, tossing gently. Combine mayonnaise and sugar, stirring well. Add mayonnaise mixture to apple mixture and stir gently. Serve over lettuce leaves. Yield: 6 servings.

Traditional Turnip Greens5 lbs. young and tender fresh turnip 1 dried red pepper pod greens with roots (1 large bunch) 1/2 tsp. salt1/2 lbs. salt pork, cut into 4 pieces 1 tsp. sugar2 cups water Hot pepper sauce (optional)

Wash turnip greens thoroughly; drain and wash again. Drain well. Tear greens into bite-size pieces. Peel turnip roots and coarsely chop. Rinse salt pork. Combine salt pork, water, pepper pod, and salt in large Dutch oven over high heat; bring to boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes. Remove and discard pepper pod. Stir in turnip greens; cover and cook 20 minutes. Add turnip roots and sugar; cover and cook 15 to 20 minutes, or until greens and roots reach desired degree of doneness. Remove and discard salt pork. Serve turnips with hot pepper sauce, if desired. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

Southern Spoon Bread2 cups milk 1 cup cornmeal3 T. unsalted butter or margarine 3/4 cup water1/2 teaspoon salt 3 eggs, separated, at room temperature

Combine milk, butter, and salt in medium saucepan; bring to boil over medium heat. Gradually add cornmeal, stirring constantly with wire whisk. Remove from heat. Gradually add water, stirring well. Pour into mixing bowl. Beat egg yolks until thick and lemon colored. Stir one-fourth of hot mixture into yolks; add tempered yolks back into bowl with remain-ing hot mixture, stirring constantly. Beat 3 egg whites with electric mixer on high speed until sti๏ฟฝ peaks form; gently fold into cornmeal mixture using wire whisk. Preheat oven to 375ยฐF. Pour mixture into greased 2-quart casserole. Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Serve immediately. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

Easy Sour Cream Pumpkin Pie3/4 cup sugar 1/8 tsp. salt1/4 cup ๏ฟฝ rmly packed brown sugar 2 cups mashed cooked pumpkin1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 (8 oz.) container sour cream1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 3 eggs, separated1/4 tsp. ground ginger Single-Crust Pie Pastry, unbaked

Combine sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt, stirring well. Add pumpkin and sour cream, stirring well. Preheat oven to 400ยฐF. Beat egg yolks until thick and lemon colored; stir into pumpkin mixture. Beat egg whites (at room temperature) until sti๏ฟฝ peaks form; fold into pumpkin mixture. Line a 9" pie plate with pastry; trim and ๏ฟฝ ute edges. Pour in ๏ฟฝ lling. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350ยฐ and bake another 45 to 50 minutes or until set, shielding edges with foil if pastry browns too quickly. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

Costume Jewelry

Q: At a recent garage sale, I purchased a shoebox filled with rhinestone costume jewelry from the 1940s and '50s. Most of them look like designer pieces. Can you recom-mend a good price guide to help me determine current values. I only paid $5 for the collection. โ€” Susan, Omaha, Nebraska

A: It sounds like you got a good deal. In recent years, rhinestone jewelry

has become extremely popular with collectors, and that has caused prices to soar. Although there are several excellent price guides, I highly recom-m e n d " R h i n e s t on e Jewelry: A Price and Iden-ti๏ฟฝ cation Guide" by Leigh Leshner and published by Krause Books. It features more than 500 illustra-tions in full color, and details the beauty, history and current market value of all types of rhinestone jewelry. ๏ฟฝ ere also is in-

formation on how to care for costume pieces.

***Q: I have a Japanese tea

set that has more than 50 pieces. It is pre-occupation. What is it worth? โ€” Joyce, Victoria, Texas

A: Your question is much like someone asking

me what a car is worth. If the car is a 1935 Packard, it is probably worth major bucks. On the other hand, if it is a Yugo, it's likely not worth much. Identi๏ฟฝ ca-tion marks on porcelain identify both the maker and sometimes the period it was cra๏ฟฝ ed. ๏ฟฝ is is its pedigree, and without this basic information it is im-possible to determine much about your set.

***Q: I own an unopened

copy of Michael Jackson's 1982 "๏ฟฝ riller" album. I would think this would be a collectible. โ€” Tamera,

Crossville, TennesseeA: A quick check of

eBay shows an album in mint condition selling for $50, with one still sealed in its original packaging o๏ฟฝ ered at $185. As with most collectables, condi-tion is everything.

***Q: I have a 1909 Sears

& Roebuck Catalog pub-lished by Venture Book Company in New York. How much is it worth? โ€” Charlotte, Marion, Illinois

A: Your catalog is not an original from 1909, but rather a re-issue published in 1979. According to

several book dealers I con-tacted, it is worth less than $10.

โ€ข On Sept. 23, 1969, the trial for eight anti-war activists charged with the violent demonstrations at the 1968 Democratic National Convention opens in Chicago. The

Biden Being Biden

While Hillary Clinton's team of consultants is locked in a room somewhere trying to figure out how she can project authenticity, Joe Biden is out doing it.

๏ฟฝ e vice president's recent interview on "๏ฟฝ e Late Show With Stephen Colbert" was compellingly human, as Biden talked of the tragic loss of his son Beau and his deci-sion whether or not to make a late entry into the Democratic presidential race.

It's rare for someone who has been at the pinnacle of our politics for decades to get a second look. But Biden's latest family tragedy (he lost his ๏ฟฝ rst wife and a daughter to a car accident in the 1970s) means that the vice president is viewed through a prism of sympathy, as a grieving father rather than just another politician. And Hillary's struggles, especially her woodenness, put an accent on Biden's let-it-all-hang-out, true-to-his-self personality.

You can disagree with Biden, you can mock him, you can cringe at his miscues -- but it is impossible not to like him. Hillary's team can come up with the best, most elaborate plan for her latest makeover (it will emphasize spontaneity, ๏ฟฝ e New York Times reports) and still not come close to matching the

bizarre charm of Biden being Biden.

We are constantly assured by people around her that Hillary Clinton is "warm in private." Biden is warm in public. His performance swearing in new senators earlier this year was a nonstop Bidenesque spectacle of sel๏ฟฝ es, folksy comments and general crazy-uncle antics, some of dubious appropriate-ness.

๏ฟฝ eir public personas are captured in the story of two parades. One of the enduring moments of the Hillary cam-paign so far is of reporters being corralled in a roped-o๏ฟฝ pen to keep them away from the candidate during a small July Fourth parade in New Hampshire โ€” creating an instant metaphor of arro-gance and control.

When Joe Biden showed up at a Pittsburgh Labor Day parade, he broke into a trot, eagerly bouncing from one side of the route to another, shaking hands, dispensing hugs and kissing babies. Low energy, in Donald Trump's signature phrase, this was not. Biden was a joyous retail campaigner in his element.

On paper, Biden is hardly a natural match for the pop-ulist, anti-establishment mood. He ๏ฟฝ rst got elected to the Senate in 1972, a year after Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was born. His resume includes 17 years as chairman or ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and 12 as chairman or ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. ๏ฟฝ is is a resume for a gold watch, not for a late-developing insurgent president campaign.

Yet Biden is a practiced and, unfortunately, fairly ef-fective demagogue. He can denounce the rich with the best of them.

If he gets in, he will im-mediately be evaluated by a di๏ฟฝ erent standard. He'll be an actual candidate rather than the intriguing potential new entry. He'll be the old white guy trying to "stop history." But he'll also be a breath of fresh air in a Democratic race that was supposed to be the stultifying march to the nomination by one of the dullest politicians of our time.

ยฉ 2015 by King Features Synd., Inc.

Last week's GOP debate was hosted by CNN, a three hour long bickering session. I almost fell asleep halfway through. ๏ฟฝ e evening was full of "gotcha" questions, in my opinion, setting up the candidates to look bad! But what else could you expect from CNN!

While the sparks flew between Carly Fiorina and Donald Trump, I clearly felt Ms. Fiorina came out ahead. A๏ฟฝ er three hours and eleven minutes on stage โ€” in heels, no less โ€” she successfully challenged Trump, criticiz-ing his wisecracks about her personal appearance and challenging his credentials

as a global businessman. Fiorina earned the biggest applause of the night as she skewered Planned Parent-hood. She said, "๏ฟฝ is is about the character of our nation, and if we will not stand up and force Obama to veto this bill, shame on us." ๏ฟฝ is was her biggest moment of the night, judging by the ap-plause!

๏ฟฝ roughout the evening the questions were not great. ๏ฟฝ e moderators framed their questions to encourage the candidates to criticize each other's positions on the issues rather than addressing the issues themselves. CNN's interrogative strategy might

have been okay for Twitter but not a live presidential debate.

All in all, I think most of the candidates did well, in spite of CNN's liberal views.

In the end, 44% of CNN's questions focused on Donald Trump. I'm not sure what that was about. De๏ฟฝ nitely, Fiorina emerged on top of the CNN GOP debate, but Trump still dominates the conversation and the lead.

And over 22 million people watched โ€” a record breaker.

On to Rich Lowry's views. He is the editor of the National Review.

September 23 marks the ๏ฟฝ rst day of fall. During this season, many people re๏ฟฝ ect on the gradual passing of time as green leaves turn gold and pine needles blanket lawns. You are also slowly changing, and those golden years of retirement are one season closer.

We want you to be as prepared as possible, and making applying for retire-ment easy is one of Social Securityโ€™s top priorities. In fact, applying for retire-ment benefits has never been easier. You can do it all online. Unlike the leaves that take many weeks to change, you can complete Social Securityโ€™s online retirement application in as little as 15 minutes. Better yet, you can apply from the comfort of your home or o๏ฟฝ ce. ๏ฟฝ ere's no need to drive to a local Social Security office or wait for an appointment with a Social Security rep-resentative. Simply go to www.socialsecurity.gov/retire/apply.html.

Most of the time, a๏ฟฝ er your online application is submitted, you're done. ๏ฟฝ ere are no forms to sign, and we usually require no additional documentation. Social Security will process your application and contact you if we need further information.

Planning for retirement is much like preparing for colder weather โ€” you want to protect yourself and your loved ones as best you can with the best resources possible.

One important, but easy way to do this is to check your Social Security State-ment using your secure online my Social Security account. Set up your account easily by answer-ing a few questions to prove your identity. A๏ฟฝ er you have an account, you can check your Statement anytime, day or night. Your Social Security Statement shows your lifetime earn-ings so you can make sure those records are correct. ๏ฟฝ is way, youโ€™ll know your

retirement bene๏ฟฝ t will be accurate.

In addition, there are some useful things you can do with your personal my Social Security account, such as:

โ€ข Get an estimate of your future bene๏ฟฝ ts if youโ€™re still working;

โ€ข Print a letter with proof of your bene๏ฟฝ ts if you cur-rently receive them; and

โ€ข Manage your benefi ts:โ€“ C h a n g e y o u r

address; โ€“ Start or change your

direct deposit; โ€“ Get a replacement

Medicare card; andโ€“ Get a replacement

SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S for tax season.

Beginning the season of retirement can be exciting and scary at the same time. At Social Security, we make it easier by providing the tools and information you can use to help you make the best decision for you and then apply for bene๏ฟฝ ts online. And, when youโ€™re done, youโ€™ll have more

time to rake up those pine needles and leaves! Go to www.socialsecurity.gov/retire/apply.html to start that new season in your life today.

Question:How far in advance

Rooted and Grounded in Love

As I went into a con-venience store, I noticed the young sales clerk sported a rock band t-shirt that read, โ€œRoot of All Evil.โ€ I asked him if he knew what the root of all evil was and he replied, โ€œMoney.โ€ โ€œPartly correct,โ€ I replied. โ€œ๏ฟฝ e scriptures actually say, โ€˜๏ฟฝ e love of money is the root of all evil.โ€™โ€ (I Timothy 6:10) ๏ฟฝ at encounter started me thinking about roots. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary de๏ฟฝ nes root as, โ€œ๏ฟฝ e lea๏ฟฝ ess, under-ground part of a seed plant that functions in absorption, aeration, and storage or as a means of anchorage. ๏ฟฝ e essential core, source, origin; verb usage: become estab-lished, set, implant, en-trench.โ€

To be rooted is essen-tial to life. Consider and apply some of the scrip-tural concepts of roots that will establish and cause your life to ๏ฟฝ our-ish.

THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL. The scriptures reveal this insidious root. โ€œFor the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness and pierced themselves through with many

sorrows.โ€ (I Timothy 6:10) God knows we need money while on this earth. But the love of money corrupts and can never satisfy the soul. It seeks to usurp the place of God. Only Christ the Bread of Life can satisfy your soul. ๏ฟฝ e love of money is a root of all kinds of evil and leads many to โ€œpierce themselves through with many sorrows.โ€

THE ROOT OF BIT-TERNESS DEFILES MANY. โ€œLooking care-fully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble and by this many b e c o m e d e f i l e d .โ€ (Hebrews 12:15) Cain became so bitter at his brother Abel that he killed him. ๏ฟฝ e root of bitterness will entangle your heart, choke out the love of Christ in your life, de๏ฟฝ le relationships, and destroy your soul.

THE ROOT OF THE BELIEVER GROUND-ED DEEP IN GODโ€™S WORD. Jesus told the parable of the soils in

Matthew 13:6. A sower sowed some seed. Some fell on the pathway and failed to take root. Some fell on rocky soil and the plants had shallow roots and withered under the scorching sun. ๏ฟฝ e seed sown among weeds was choked out. But seed sown on good soil pro-duced abundantly. Be rooted deep in Godโ€™s Word.

THE ROOT OF SIN MUST BE CUT OFF. John the Baptist preached a message of repentance. โ€œAnd even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees.โ€ (Matthew 3:8-10) Last year I tried to pull a stump out of the ground, but I had to dig around it and cut the tap root before I could pull it out. Repentance severs the root of sin and bondage. Paulo Coelho said, โ€œWhen something unde-sirable grows in my soul I ask God to give me the same courage merci-lessly to pluck it out.โ€

THE ROOT AND OFFSPRING OF JESSE, JESUS CHRIST, GIVES POWER TO OVER-COME. He gives glori-ous shade from the scorching sun and rest for the troubled soul. (Isaiah 11:10; 53:2) He is the hope of the Gentiles who were separated from God. (Romans 15:12; Revelation 5:5) Jesus

Christ referred to himself as โ€œthe root and the o๏ฟฝ -spring of David.โ€ (Rev-elation 22:16) Itโ€™s a des-ignation of the Messiah. Be rooted in Him.

THE ROOT OF THE WILD OLIVE TREE WAS GRAFTED INTO THE OLIVE TREE. Throughout my life, I have lived in at least 12 locations. Sometimes Iโ€™ve felt that I had no roots until I realized that, by faith in Christ, I have been born again and gra๏ฟฝ ed into the root of David โ€” Jesus Christ. (Romans 11:16, 18; Co-lossians 2:7; Proverbs 12:3, 12) Rooted in Christ, there is stability and life everlasting.

THE ROOT OF THE BELIEVER GROUND-ED IN GODโ€™S LOVE ABOUNDS IN THE FULLNESS OF GOD. โ€œ๏ฟฝ at Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith, that you, being rooted and grounded in love may be able to com-prehend . . . the love of Christ . . . ๏ฟฝ lled with all the fullness of Godโ€ (Ephesians 3:17-19)

A contemporary song says it this way, โ€œYour love never fails, never gives up, never runs out on me.โ€Shalom,Cli๏ฟฝ SandersEagle Life [email protected]

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Per-sonal matters claim a good deal of the Lambโ€™s time in the early part of the week. But by midweek, pragmatic con-siderations (work, school, job-seeking, etc.) begin to take priority.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) ๏ฟฝ e seasonal shi๏ฟฝ ignites the Bovineโ€™s creative aspects. You could do well if you try to combine your penchant for innovation with the more pragmatic demands of the week.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Ideas come easily to you this week. And never mind that some might suggest theyโ€™re unworkable and/or impractical. Itโ€™s your vision that counts. Work them out and see what turns up.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal matters continue to dominate the early part of the week. By midweek, more workaday issues once again begin to emerge. Balance your time to give both the attention they need.LEO (July 23 to August 22) A new contact could provide an expanded opportunity. But be sure you get all the facts before you consider signing on. Ask questions, and be wary if you donโ€™t get the right answers.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unexpected development could cause some supposedly resolved dis-agreements to reignite. Deal with the situation before it leads to some really serious problems.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A clash of work-linked viewpoints needs to be discussed openly, honestly

and calmly by all concerned before it can impede progress on an ongoing project.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) ๏ฟฝ e Scorpionโ€™s pragmatic side helps you accept the possibility that a change of plans might be the wise thing to do. Be sure to weigh all your considerations carefully.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some people might not take no for an answer. Never mind. Keep your resolve if youโ€™re sure you donโ€™t want to be involved in a poten-tially sticky situation.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) All other facts and ๏ฟฝ gures aside, itโ€™s what you learn about poten-tial colleagues that can be most helpful in assessing any decisions youโ€™re likely to make regarding a new project.AQUARIUS (January 20 to Febru-ary 18) You might want to reconsider some of your outside commitments if they continue to demand more time than you can spare. Be honest with yourself when making a decision.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Pay attention to that inner voice of Piscean wisdom counseling you to remove those rose-colored glasses and take an honest look at any decisions you might face this week.BORN THIS WEEK: You have a pen-chant for persuasion that would make you a ๏ฟฝ ne candidate for a political career.

ยฉ 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

โ€ข It was noted author and Nobel laureate Ernest Hemingway who made the following sage obser-vation: โ€œNever think that war, no matter how justi-๏ฟฝ ed, is not a crime. Ask the infantry and ask the dead.โ€ He would know; he volunteered as an am-bulance driver on the Italian front during World War I.

โ€ข Poets, take note: Th e words โ€œorange,โ€ โ€œmonth,โ€ โ€œpurpleโ€ and โ€œsilverโ€ have

no rhyming words in English.

โ€ข Historians say that Queen Victoria didnโ€™t like knocking at doors; she preferred scratching.

โ€ข If youโ€™re interested in space, you are probably aware that the second person to walk on the moon was Buzz Aldrin. Most likely, though, you didnโ€™t know that his motherโ€™s maiden name was Moon. Aldrin kept this fact a secret from

NASA โ€” he was evident-ly concerned that his bosses would think he was somehow trying to gain favor.

โ€ข Itโ€™s been reported that in the early days of the Christian church, forks were considered to be inappropriate.

โ€ข Th ose who study such things say that deep-sea angler๏ฟฝ sh mate for life โ€” the maleโ€™s life, anyway. ๏ฟฝ e female is much larger than the male, and when they mate the male at-taches himself to her abdomen โ€” where he remains, living as a para-site, until he dies.

โ€ข If you have detected the presence of the para-normal by olfactory means, youโ€™ve experi-

enced "clairalience." โ€ข Th e ancient Inca be-

lieved that an eclipse was caused when the mood goddess was under attack by a g iant snake. Whenever this event oc-curred, the Inca made lots of noise, believing that the cacophony would scare the snake away.

***๏ฟฝ ought for the Day:

"We now know that mem-ories are not fixed or frozen, like Proustโ€™s jars of preserves in a larder, but are transformed, dis-assembled, reassembled and recategorized with every act of recollection."
