I Will Not WatchYou Nae-Nae

One day, during the Reagan administration, my father put on a college foot-ball game. e quarterback was a hotshot by the name of Boomer. Boomer was tossing touchdowns, cheer-leaders were flinging all about and the stadium was going accordingly wild.

" at's why you want to go to a big college," my great, successful father, told me.

Not one ever to quarrel with any edict passed down by my parental guidance, I made them proud by at-

tending just such a school, attaining mediocre heights. And I remember my very first football game as a member of the student section.

I remember the rst key play of the game. Why? Because there was this one dude standing on a riser in plastic shades shaking his car keys, admonishing us through megaphone tech-nology to go ahead and shake our own keys! at cheer, I am guessing, would have been made more ef-fective if we had, indeed, more than one solitary key and a flaccid, laminated dining card on our keychains.

en, as we made annoy-ing little fwappy apping

sounds with our key and card combo, we were o ered this cheer: "Four and four is half of sixteen ... all for [the team], do the lean, lean!" And then we all leaned to the right and then we leaned to the le . We did this for little apparent reason or e ect, because whatever we were doing wasn't helping the team we leaned for, unless our game plan was to get destroyed by Florida State.

But that was then, and it was nothing a little Winona Ryder flick on the VHS couldn't cure. Fast-forward to today, and it's a whole new world. Student sec-tions are all the rage, and while that's kind of cool in theory, in practice it o en is not.

We get it. You're young and enthusiastic. You need things to occupy your time 45 minutes before tipoff and 4.5 years before you occupy Wall Street. Nobody begrudged you that one week you all went viral and poured milk on your heads or did the Harlem Shake. But come on, lighten up a

bit. When ESPN does a

remote from your presti-gious college home court four hours before tipo and you're screaming like a banshee in face paint, you do not have to keep claim-ing that you're No. 1. First of all, you're not No. 1. Put your nger down. Secondly, you're freaking out as if you took the brown acid every time the camera cuts to you. It's high time (no pun) to reassess.

Can't you let up on the throttle a bit and just enjoy the game? Cheer like crazy, sure, but if you are cheering full force for six hours on a Sunday at a Catholic uni-versity, you've got to be either o -your-meds crazy or on crazy meds. You're at least suspect.

I'm tired just watching you whip, but watching you nae-nae, too? I'd rather watch the game.

Carpenters' Tools

Q: My grandpa and dad were both carpenters and they accumulated an entire outbuilding of tools. Most seem to be at least a century old. Can you put me in touch with someone who can appraise them for me and perhaps give me an idea of where and how I can liq-

uidate this collection? — Beverly, Brooklyn, New York

A: William Gustafson is the owner of William Gus-tafson Antiques, a company that deals, specializes and appraises older tools. He conducts several tool auc-tions each year, and he might be able to help you. Contact is P.O. Box 104, 11643 Rte. 22, Austerlitz,

NY 12017. A second source is

Martin J. Donnelly antique tools. Donnelly is consid-ered the foremost Ameri-can auctioneer of older tools. His address is P.O. Box 281, Bath, NY 14810; [email protected]; and www.mjdtools.com. In ad-dition to auctions, Don-

nelly publishes a catalog of antique tools for sale, fully indexed, and so compre-hensive that dealers use it as a guide.

*** Q: I have some old coins

from the 1950s and '60s, an assortment of Avon bottles and about a dozen Beanie Babies. I am interested in selling them, and wonder whom I can contact. — Sue, Tulsa, Oklahoma

A: Unfortunately, you seem to have the trifecta of di cult-to-sell collectibles. Your coins probably aren't old or rare enough to be of much interest to a dealer or serious collector. The

market for Avon bottles is sluggish at best, and I suggest you monitor eBay to see what they are selling for in Internet auctions. Beanie Babies were a fad and in great demand a number of years ago, but as interest waned, prices plunged. ey will be ex-tremely di cult to sell.

***Q: I have a Wilcox and

Gibbs treadle sewing machine in a nice cabinet and with original instruc-tion book and attachments. Where can I sell it? — Jim, Chillicothe, Ohio

A: According to Antique American Sewing Ma-

chines by James W. Slaten, most Willcox and Gibbs treadle machines manufac-tured a er 1880 are worth between $400 and $500, depending on condition. I recommend you contact antique shops in your area to see if there is any interest. Sewing machines are plen-tiful and not in great demand with collectors.

Last week was de nitely a huge one in the world of presidential contenders.

• Bernie support surprises• Super delegates• Trump dominates media• All about protests• North Carolina, etc.• Rubio done?• Cruz hangs in• Kasich rising• Washington out• Who's dressing Hillary?F i r s t u p , B e r n i e .

Shockingly, Sanders won the Michigan primary last Tuesday night, a er the polls showed him recently at 20 points down, but climbing.

This could be "the shot heard round the world" for the Hillary camp. How will Bernie do now in other mid-western states like Illinois, Ohio and more on this Tuesday? (Our press time was Monday.)

Hillary isn't worried about Bernie catching her because she's got the super delegates locked up (currently 465 to Bernie's 25). If the super del-egates (the Democrat Party's concept to make sure no "candidate of the people" could win over the party's chosen candidate) were not in play, the race would now be 766 Hillary delegates to Bernie's 561. What a di er-ence the super delegate makes!

I wonder is this really the American way? More on Hillary later.

But who dominated the media news all last week? Of course the answer is: Trump, Trump, Trump.

First, last Tuesday, except for Idaho he won all the state primaries and as he would say "By a lot." Also, Ben Carson came out in support of Trump, and then starting in North Carolina the pro-testers at Trump rallies esca-lated. What has always struck me as odd is that protesters think it's their right to disrupt

a political rally. Let me give you an example to relate to. If the Centralia Orphans were having a pep rally to support their team, do you think the Mt. Vernon Rams would think it was okay to enter the rally and protest the Orphans? I'm sure both sides wouldn't think it appropriate, no matter whether it was an Orphans rally or a Rams rally. And, of course, doing so would only lead to prob-lems.

Back to the North Carolina rally. As protesters were being lead out of the area, and which the media fails to repeatedly mention, one pro-tester raised both arms and gave the booing crowd "the dreaded nger." You know the gesture that usually leads to violence, and it did. He was sucker punched by a 78 year old man, who obvi-ously didn't appreciate "the nger." I don't condone that action, but it does better explain what happened. en the protests grew at the St. Louis rally and then in Chicago the rally was shut down because of safety reasons according to Trump.

Trump, with his rhetoric at previous rallies, has also escalated the violence and needs to tone down this rhetoric for the safety of all at future rallies. On to other Republican candidates.

Marco Rubio continues his scripted attacks on Trump, but by all indica-tions will probably lose his home state of Florida and will withdraw from the race a er Tuesday.

Ted Cruz continues his attorney-like attack on Trump, trying to discredit him for asking his support-ers to pledge their votes to Trump. Cruz attempts to make it seem the voters are "pledging allegiance to Trump" the monarch.

In actuality, Cruz, as always, wants to make sure he is the alternate to Trump and will pick up supporters when "Trump fails."

Me a nw h i l e , O h i o Governor John Kasich has risen in the polls and has continued to take the high road in this election. Polls now show he will probably win his home state of Ohio, but a er that, then what? Trump and Cruz will take most future states.

In this election, we must remember that the major-ity of our citizens are fed up with the last 30 years of Washington politics. at is why Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Bernie Sanders and somewhat John Kasich are on the wave they are.

ey do not represent what the majority of Washington has been doing TO US. Marco Rubio, Hillary Clinton, Jeb Bush (by his name) and other candidates who have dropped out do.

On a nal lighter note, Hillary appeared on CNN Sunday night Town Hall. Her wardrobe choice throughout the race has been mentioned, but at the town hall she appeared in a distracting blue pant suit w i t h G I G A N T I C POCKETS with white piping. I had to laugh out loud because I couldn't' gure out if it signi ed her "deep pockets in this elec-tion" or if she was trying to get the Captain Kangaroo vote.

CookingWith Lizzie

Spring Is About To Spring!Spring is beginning to tease us with the daffodils and other Spring blessings

popping out. It won't be long and the trees will start budding. With the few warm days recently I find myself so ready for Spring, but I haven't packed the sweaters away yet.

Easter comes early this year so it's time to pull the menu together for family and friends.

Honey Glazed HamThis ham is so moist and delicious that each slice practically melts in your

mouth. The sweet outer coating teams nicely with the saltiness of the ham.

1 (6 to 8 pound) smoked, fully cooked bone-in ham half

Glaze:2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup sugar1½ tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. ground cloves1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 cup honey

Preheat oven to 350°F. Remove hard outer skin from ham, leaving a thick layer of fat; place ham, fat side up, on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. With a sharp knife, score fat in a diamond design; insert meat thermometer into ham, making sure it does not touch fat or bone. Bake ham for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Remove ham; leave oven on.

Combine the sugars and spices, stirring well. Brush ham generously with honey. Pat brown sugar mixture over honey, coating ham thoroughly. Return ham to oven, and bake at 325°F for 30 to 40 minutes, or until meat thermom-eter registers 140°F. Yields 12 to 14 servings.

Garden Club Perfection Salad2 envelopes unflavored gelatin 1/2 cup cold water2 cups boiling water 1/2 cup sugar1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup cider vinegar1/4 tsp. salt 1 cup grated carrots3/4 cup finely shredded cabbage 1/3 cup chopped green bell pepper1 (2-oz.) jar diced pimiento, drained1 (15¼-ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained

Combine gelatin and 1/2 cup cold water in a medium bowl; add 2 cups boiling water, stirring until gelatin dissolves. Add sugar, lemon juice, vinegar, and salt; stir well. Chill until the consistency of unbeaten egg white.

Gently fold carrot, pineapple, cabbage, green pepper, and pimiento into gelatin mixture. Pour gelatin mixture into a lightly oiled 5-cup mold. Cover and chill until firm. Unmold to serve. Yields 6 servings.

New Potatoes in Cream Sauce12 new potatoes 3 T. unsalted butter or margarine3 T. all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. salt1/4 tsp. white pepper 1 cup milk1/2 cup half and half Garnish: 1 T. chopped fresh chives

Wash potatoes; pare a 1-inch strip around center of each potato. Place pota-toes in a large saucepan; cover with water and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender; drain well.

Melt butter in a heavy saucepan over low heat; add flour, salt, and pepper, stirring until smooth. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in milk and half and half; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly. Pour over potatoes; sprinkle with chives. Yields 4 servings.

 e AnointingAt Bethany

It’s been said that love isn’t love until it’s given away. True love must nd an expression. Mary, the sister of Lazarus, who Jesus had raised from the dead, loved Jesus with all her heart. Mary expressed her love with a remark-able, sel ess, extravagant act. The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John record this event, with John telling us that it was Mary. “And being in Bethany at the house of Simon, the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came bearing an alabas-ter ask of very costly oil of spikenard. en she broke the flask and poured it on His head. But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, ‘Why was this fragrant oil wasted? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.’ And they criticized her sharply. But Jesus said, ‘Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me . . . She has done what she could. She has come be-forehand to anoint My body for burial. Assur-edly, I say to you, wher-ever this gospel is

preached . . . what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.” (Mark 14:3-11)

Jesus was greatly touched by Mary’s ex-travagant act. What lessons can we learn?

AN EXTRAVAGANT LOVE. e fragrant oil that Mary poured out on Jesus was very costly. ose present assessed its value at over three hundred denarii – equiv-alent to a year’s salary today! He who is forgiven much loves much. To Mary it was an act of worship. e essence of worshiping Christ is to regard him with utmost love, respect, and devo-tion and to be willing to sacri ce to him what is most precious. is type of extravagant worship will always have its critics. This woman was criti-cized sharply. But costly worship pleases God. Abraham willingly laid his son Isaac on the altar of sacri ce. (Genesis 22) We must do no less.

(Romans 12:1-2)AN ELEMENTARY

PRINCIPLE. Jesus told the woman’s critics to leave her alone. “She has done what she could.” (Mark 14:8) Have you given your best to Jesus in worship and witness? I met a woman in a mo-torized wheelchair. She lives in a low income, high-rise apartment building. She can’t do much but she makes and passes out Jesus rocks. This young lady in a wheelchair takes smooth, round pebbles puts a cross sticker on it and on the back with a marker pen writes, “Jesus loves you.” I found another one of her Jesus rocks yester-day on a newspaper box. She engaged an elemen-tary principle in worship and witness. “She has done what she could.” Mary had her critics but Jesus praised her. What about you? Are you doing your best to worship and witness for Jesus?

AN EXPRESSION OF THE GOSPEL. Jesus re-vealed the spiritual ap-plication of Mary’s self-less act. “She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial.” This anointing of Jesus’ body happened just a couple of days before Passover

when the paschal lamb would be slain and the blood sprinkled on the mercy seat. Jesus came to die on the cross for the sins of the world. (Romans 5:8) In the Last Supper, Jesus demon-strated the gospel at the Passover meal: the bread - His body; the cup – His blood. (Mark 14:22-26) Paul makes it clear that Jesus died, was buried, and on the third day arose. (I Corinthians 15:1-8) is is the essen-tial essence of the gospel – you must believe. (I Corinthians 15:9-11)

AN EMBLEM FOR ETERNITY. Jesus pro-claimed that wherever the gospel was preached, Mary’s sel ess act would be told as a memorial to her. She left a lasting legacy by her extravagant worship and witness. Men like Jacob and Cor-nelius le a lasting me-morial. (Genesis 18:10-22; Acts 10:4) Follow Mary’s example of ex-travagant worship and leave a lasting legacy that pleases God. Worship the Savior who died for our sins.

B. Meier, the DHS Liaison par-ticipated in the event.

e tour began at 1 p.m., and the above people plus over 20 parents/guardians toured the Community Building, visiting class-rooms and the Bistro. e Bistro is a small restaurant at the center where sta and individuals are able to pur-chase small meals and snacks. Several individuals who live at Murray Center are the waiters and wait-resses at the Bistro. A er visiting this building the group toured Fir Cottage, and Center Director Mary Ann Smith explained the many di erent services the center provides: occupa-tional therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and recreational therapy are just some of the services. e group then toured Elm Cottage, a cottage where the most medically fragile indi-viduals live. The cottage director, Misty Diehl, ex-plained the many medical issues the individuals deal with and how the nursing sta serves these individu-als. Phil, a Murray individ-ual, welcomed the group using a speech communica-tion device that he uses by pressing it with his cheek. During the visit to Elm, parents/guardians shared stories of the success their

loved one had living at Murray Center, and Monica Sobczak explained that her sister Madonna, age 58, is the second longest living individual with Rett's Disease. She credited the fantastic nursing care Madonna has received at Murray for this longevity.

e group continued the tour, seeing the therapeutic swimming pool and the outdoor recreational areas. The group then met and they were able to discuss the reasons why Murray Center is so important not just to Centralia, but to all of central and southern Illinois.

Following are some quotes from participating individuals:

Paul Schimpf: No one can see from pictures how wonderful this place is. It is the love that is over owing here that makes all the dif-ference. It is just like two plants. The plant that is

nourished with love and care will ourish and grow. The plant that does not receive this care will wither and die. Murray is the plant that is nourished and loved.

Sharee Langenstein: I came to Murray knowing in my head that Murray must remain open. A er visiting here and seeing the love and care the individuals receive here in their home I now know it in my heart. Murray must remain open.

Sheila Simon: It is so very obvious that this is a community. ere is no iso-lation here. It is a commu-nity of everyone sharing and caring.

Mark Decker represent-ing John Cavaletto: Rep. Cavaletto has supported Murray Center for over forty years. He regrets not being here today to share this special place with ev-eryone.

Mike Hall representing John Shimkus: John's parents are from Centralia. Murray Center has been part of his life for over 40 years, and he has always supported the center and fought to keep the center open. Murray is a home to these individuals.

Rep Meier: It is amazing as I walk through Murray Center now to see the old, wonderful atmosphere re-turning, the volunteers, the parents / guardians, and the caring sta providing the best home for these indi-viduals. is is not an insti-tution. It is a home.

• Keep the pets in mind as you decorate and prepare for Easter. Flowers and candy can be tempting and toxic to our furry friends. Cats especially take to plastic grass, which can ob-struct their digestive system. And, as the ASPCA reminds us: "While live bunnies, chicks and other festive animals are adorable, resist the urge to buy them — these cute babies grow up fast and o en require spe-cialized care!"

• Sewing Tip: Run your thread through a sheet of fabric so ener to prevent tangling.

• Are you in the process of pulling ower pots out of the shed? You can remove salt deposits from clay pots by mixing together equal parts white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and water. Put the mixture in a spray bottle. Spray down the pot inside and out, and scrub with a plastic scrubbie. Rinse and let dry before using.

• "Spray your trimmer line with vegetable oil before installing it in the trimmer to keep it from jamming." — C.L. in Louisiana

• It's spring at the farmer's market: Look for great deals on in-season mangoes, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, asparagus, artichokes, broccoli and cauli ower, as well as spring onions and lettuces. Also, get ready to stock the freezer, as March is National Frozen Food Month.

• "Use plastic food-stor-age containers to hold your accessory cords in a 'junk' drawer. If you flip them bottoms up, you can see what cord is in the con-tainer to access it quickly. is way, you don't need to worry about family who don't put things away in the right box. Or is that just my family?" — A.L. in South Carolina

• DIY rust removal: Try soaking the item in vinegar for an hour. Use baking soda as a mild abrasive. Or cut a potato in half, sprinkle the cut side with salt, and use it to rub o rust.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Consider moving beyond the usual methods to nd a more creative means of handling a dif- cult on-the-job situation. Avoid confrontation and, instead, aim for cooperation.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Seasonal change creates a new look for the outdoors. It also in-spires Taureans to redo their own environments, and this is a good week to start redoing both your home and workplace. Enjoy.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A misunderstanding needs to be straightened out so the wrong im-pression isn’t allowed to stand. If necessary, o er to support the use of a third party to act as an impar-tial arbitrator.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A career change o ering what you want in money and responsibili-ties could involve moving to a new location. Discuss this with family members before making a deci-sion.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Feel-ing mi ed over how you believe you were treated is understand-able. But before you decide to “set things straight,” make sure the whole thing wasn’t just a misinter-pretation of the facts.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Showing you care makes it easier to build trust and gain an advantage in handling a delicate situation. What you learn from this experience also will help you understand yourself better.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Planning for the future is ne, especially if you include the roles

that family members may be asked to play. Don’t be surprised if some hidden emotions are revealed in the process.SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem-ber 21) Making choices highlights much of the week, and you have a head start here, thanks to your ability to grasp the facts of a situa-tion and interpret them in a clear-cut manner.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Carrying a torch can be a two-way situation: It can either keep you tied to the past or help light your way to the future. e choice, as always, has to be yours.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your watchwords this week are: “Focus.” “Focus.” “Fo-cus.” Don’t let yourself be distract-ed from what you set out to do. ere’ll be time later to look over other possibilities.AQUARIUS (January 20 to Febru-ary 18) A workplace opportunity might require changes you’re not keen on making. Discuss the plus-ses and minuses with someone familiar with the situation before you make a decision.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Love and romance are strong in your aspect this week. If you’ve al-ready met the right person, expect your relationship to grow. And if you’re still looking, odds are you’ll soon be nding it.BORN THIS WEEK: You ap-proach life in a wise and measured manner, which gives you an edge in many areas.

• It was President Franklin Roosevelt who made the following sage o b s e r v a t i o n : "Government by orga-nized money is just as dangerous as govern-ment by organized mob."

• Are you a cerauno-philiac? If so, Central Florida, is the place to live. e area between Tampa Bay on the pen-insula's west coast and Cape Canaveral on the east coast is known as

Lightning Alley, and Florida is the lightning capital of the United States — an excellent home for anyone who has an extreme love of thunder and lightning.

• Singer Katy Perry reportedly has a cat named Kitty Purry.

• If you're an animal lover who's fond of Corgis — the Welsh dog known for its extremely short legs — you might want to take a look at the

Munchkin cat. Only rec-ognized as a separate breed in 1995, this cat is characterized by the shortness of its legs.

• When Edgar Allan Poe rst started writing his most famous poem, " e Raven," he intended it to be short. Over the next decade, though, he kept adding to it, until it nally reached a length of 18 verses. e poem's publication in 1845 had a mixed critical recep-tion; William Butler Yeats called it "insincere and vulgar" and said "its execution [is] a rhythmi-cal trick," and Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I see nothing in it." " e

Raven" was wildly popular with the public, though, and Poe became — for a brief time — the most famous writer in America.

• Worried about snooping? You may be surprised by the results of a recent survey: It seems that 82 percent of men claim that they have never peeked into a date's medicine cabinet..
