In the news last week:• Th e Senate Democrats

demonstrate rebellious be-havior.

• The Supreme Court ruling on Obama's illegal immigration.

S enate D emo crats showed stunning and unruly behavior on the House � oor, chanting, "no bill, no break" and waving pieces of paper with the names of gun victims. � ey continued their protest even as lawmakers voted on a previously scheduled and unrelated measure to over-turn a veto by Barack Obama.

The gun protest sit-in began last Wednesday as Democrats demanded votes on gun control bills. Disre-spectfully, they shouted down House Speaker Paul Ryan when he attempted to restore order as their protest stretched into the night. Ryan attempted to ignore their childish outbursts and behavior, pounding his gavel over the Democrats' shouting. Shame! Shame! Shame!

A� er that the Democrats started singing "We Shall Overcome" and then the Democrats said they would stay until the Republicans yielded to their demands to hold votes on the bills to strengthen background checks and prevent people on the no fly list from getting guns, in the wake of the Orlando massacre.

Ryan dismissed the protest as "nothing more than a publicity stunt," and publicity they got.

In an interview with CNN, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan made it clear

there would not be a vote and said, "We're not going to take away a citizen's con-stitutional rights without due process."

Although cameras were turned o� , their unprofes-sional behavior was broad-cast to the world from the Democrats' cell phones and feeds were picked up by C-Span.

And even after being asked by Security to clear the � oor, Nancy Pelosi said, "That's not going to happen." Remember Ms. Pelosi? She's the brain dead Democrat that actually said on the Obamacare bill in the middle of the night, "Let's vote on this bill so we can � nd out what's in it." At one point Pelosi said the sit-in would continue "until hell freezes over." What a rocket scientist. In the end, the security check did take places, involving � ve agents and a dog, as the House Democrat leader continued to speak.

I personally couldn't help but wonder if the Re-publicans had behaved in such a manner, what would the outcome have been!

Over all, more than 170 Democrats took part in the sit-in, with Illinois Senator Dick Durbin joining in at one point.

� e bottom line on this issue is under the current administration there is no telling what could happen if this bill did pass. Could it give Barack Obama more freedom to wreak havoc with the American people as he has the last seven years? � e reality is that the Democrats can continue to talk the talk, but they have

no end game strategy, and the fact is, the Senate has already defeated the measure they're calling for. � e House is focused on eliminating terrorists, not the constitutional rights of law abiding citizens.

I guess the Senate Dem-ocrats think that stunts on the � oor will change that! However, as the two sides raced on, sta� brought in food, pillows and even sleeping bags. What a side show, all on taxpayer dollars!

And as the sit-in contin-ued, the Democratic Con-gressional Campaign Com-m i t t e e u s e d t h e opportunity to fund raise, with Pelosi telling support-ers, “I need 6,000 gi� s in the door during tonight's sit-in. Will you pitch in $1?”

And some call this lead-ership. You might; I don't!

To me the focus should be on immigration. Case in point, the shooter of the 49 innocent murdered and wounded vict ims in Orlando, Florida. The shooter's dear old dad sup-ports the Taliban and hates gays. He is exactly the kind of immigrant you would hope to deny the priceless privilege of coming here, not to mention the shoot-er's wife. Even though it's apparent she wasn't an in-nocent bystander she still hasn't been arrested.

� e fact is criminals will always � nd a way to get the gun of their choice, or the weapon of their choice, whether it's a bomb, a knife or whatever. In my opinion,

Finding Happiness

Most people want to be happy. In the P r e a m b l e o f t h e D e c l a r a t i o n o f Independence our fore-fathers made this radical declaration, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain in-alienable rights, that among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” But why in America are so few truly happy? Many people try to � nd hap-piness in the wrong manner and place.

God wants us to be happy. “And He brought forth His people with joy and His chosen with g ladness .” (Psa lm 105:43) Consider these scriptural keys to hap-piness.

HAPPINESS IS A DECISION. You will never truly be happy unless you choose to be happy. True happiness is not dependent on cir-cumstances or the people around you. � e psalmist declares, “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalms 34:1-2) Don’t allow others to

a� ect your happiness. Be a thermostat not a thermometer. Regulate your environment – don’t just register it. Paul said that he had learned the secret of being content in all things. (Philippians 4:11-12) “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

HAPPINESS IS AN INSIDE JOB. It’s Jesus living on the inside of your heart. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him. And sup with him and he with me.” (Re ve lat ion 3 :20) Happiness is knowing your sins are forgiven. “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.” (Psalms 32:1-2) In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus

teaches eight attitudes that generate happiness. � e � rst is, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:1-10) Recently, I came across these three thieves of happiness on Facebook, “3 Ways to Fail at Everything in Life: 1) Blame all your problems on others; 2) Complain about every-thing; 3) Do not be grateful.”

HAPPINESS IS IN GIVING. Jesus taught that if you want to be happy, you must learn to give your life away. (Matthew 16:24) Jesus was the most selfless person who ever lived on earth. Self-centered, selfish people are not happy. � e Holy Spirit gave us this key, “For God loves a cheerful giver.” (II Corinthians 2:6-9)

HAPPINESS IS IN PLEASING GOD NOT PEOPLE. You will never be happy if you allow other people to run your life or strive for the ap-proval of others. Be yourself and realize that God made you unique. He loves you uncondi-tionally. Paul said that he lived his life to please G o d n o t m a n .

(Galatians1:10) Zig Ziglar gave this insight, “� e less you respond to negative people the more positive your life will become.”

Daily seek God’s will and direction for your life. Jesus revealed his key to happiness, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to � nish his work.” (John 4:34) When you stand before the Lord in heaven, the question will not be how much money you made or what you accomplished on earth, but, “What did you do for Jesus?”

HA P P I N E S S I S TRUSTING IN GOD. I had a t-shirt that read, “Don’t worry. Be happy!” Consider this awesome statement by A. W. Tozer, “I take refuge in the fact that while I don’t know everything, I do know someone who does!” Jesus said, “Let not your heart be trou-bled; you believe in God, believe also in me . . . I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:1-6)

Filling:7½ to 8 cups sliced fresh peaches1½ cups sugar1/4 cup � our

Combine sliced strawberries and 1/4 cup sugar; stir gently. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours. Lightly grease two 9" cake pans; set aside. To make shortcake dough, combine � our, sugar, baking powder and salt in large mixing bowl; cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Preheat oven to 450°F. Combine milk and egg; beat well. Add to � our mixture, stirring with fork until so� dough forms. Pat dough out evenly into cake pans (dough will be sticky, so moisten � ngers with water). Beat egg white until sti� peaks form. Brush surface of dough in each cake pan with beaten egg white. Sprinkle each layer with 1 T. sugar. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove shortcakes from pans and let cool completely on wire racks (layers will be thin). To make topping, beat cream with electric mixer on high speed until foamy; gradually add 3 T. confectioners' sugar, beating until so� peaks form. Place 1 cake layer on serving plate. Spread half of whipped cream over layer and arrange half of sliced strawber-ries on top, using slotted spoon. Repeat procedure with remaining cake layer, whipped cream (reserve a little for garnish), and sliced strawberries. Garnish top of shortcake with reserved whipped cream and whole strawberries. Yield: 8 servings.

Summer Peach Cobbler

To make pastry, combine � our and salt; cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture re-sembles coarse meal. Sprinkle 2 to 4 T. cold water, 1 T. at a time, evenly over surface, stirring with fork until all dry ingredients are moistened. Shape into ball; chill. To make � lling, combine peaches with other ingredients in Dutch oven; set aside until mixture forms syrup. Bring peaches to boil; reduce heat, and cook, uncovered, 8 to 12 min., or until peaches are tender. Spoon peaches into greased 11x7x2" baking dish. Preheat oven to 475°F. Roll out dough to 1/8" thickness on lightly � oured surface and cut into l" strips; arrange in lattice design over peaches. Bake 15 min., or until golden. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

Obama was disappoint-ed, stating that, “For more than two centuries, wel-coming wave after wave a� er wave of immigrants has kept us youthful and dynamic.”

I never agree with Obama, but on the above statement I would say he's right. However, the di� er-

ence is legal and illegal. It's a di� erent time and age. And I can assure you his idea of immigration and mine are two different things, and letting thou-sands upon thousands of unvetted Syrians in isn't my idea of good immigration policy, and in fact, puts legal citizens at risk.

Last week, the United Methodist Children’s Home Best Beginnings Nurse-Fam i ly Par t n e r s h ip program teamed up with the Jefferson County Sheri� ’s O� ce to provide free car seat safety checks for local residents. Nearly 73% of child restraints are not installed or used cor-rectly, and we wanted to ensure our local commu-nity had an opportunity to learn more about car seat safety.

Car seats were checked to see if they met required safety guidelines for the child who uses the seat, and ensure that the seat was installed properly, was not defective or out of date. New car seats were also given out to a few families in need. UMCH would like to thank Sheriff Travis

Allen and his deputies who helped with this event. � ey look forward to part-nering together again next year.
