Illinois legislators and candidates gathered at Murray Center in Centralia, IL on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 to tour and learn about the facility.
Legislative visitors in-cluded: Mike Hall, repre-senting Congressman Shimkus's o ce, Rep. Terri Bryant, Mark Decker repre-senting Rep. John Caveletto's o ce, Sheila Simon candi-date 58th Senate District, Paul Schimpf candidate 58th Senate District, Sharee Langenstein candidate 58th Senate District, and Rep. Charlie Meier. Also, J. B. Meier, the DHS Liaison par-ticipated in the event.
e tour began at 1 p.m., and the above people plus over 20 parents/guardians toured the Community Building, visiting class-rooms and the Bistro. e Bistro is a small restaurant at the center where sta and individuals are able to pur-chase small meals and snacks. Several individuals who live at Murray Center
are the waiters and wait-resses at the Bistro. A er visiting this building the group toured Fir Cottage, and Center Director Mary Ann Smith explained the many di erent services the center provides: occupa-tional therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and recreational therapy are just some of the services. e group then toured Elm Cottage, a cottage where the most medically fragile indi-viduals live. The cottage director, Misty Diehl, ex-plained the many medical issues the individuals deal with and how the nursing sta serves these individu-als. Phil, a Murray individ-ual, welcomed the group using a speech communica-tion device that he uses by pressing it with his cheek. During the visit to Elm, parents/guardians shared stories of the success their loved one had living at Murray Center, and Monica Sobczak explained that her sister Madonna, age 58, is the second longest living individual with Rett's Disease. She credited the fantastic nursing care Madonna has received at Murray for this longevity.
e group continued the tour, seeing the therapeutic swimming pool and the outdoor recreational areas. The group then met and they were able to discuss the reasons why Murray Center is so important not just to Centralia, but to all of central and southern Illinois.
Following are some quotes from participating individuals:
Paul Schimpf: No one can see from pictures how wonderful this place is. It is
the love that is over owing here that makes all the dif-ference. It is just like two plants. The plant that is nourished with love and care will ourish and grow. The plant that does not receive this care will wither and die. Murray is the plant that is nourished and loved.
Sharee Langenstein: I came to Murray knowing in my head that Murray must remain open. A er visiting here and seeing the love and care the individu-als receive here in their home I now know it in my heart. Murray must remain open.
Sheila Simon: It is so very obvious that this is a community. There is no isolation here. It is a com-munity of everyone sharing and caring.
Mark Decker represent-ing John Cavaletto: Rep. Cavaletto has supported Murray Center for over forty years. He regrets not being here today to share this special place with everyone.
Mike Hall representing John Shimkus: John's parents are from Centralia. Murray Center has been part of his life for over 40 years, and he has always supported the center and fought to keep the center open. Murray is a home to these individuals.
Rep Meier: It is amazing as I walk through Murray Center now to see the old, wonderful atmosphere re-turning, the volunteers, the parents / guardians, and the caring sta providing the best home for these indi-viduals. is is not an insti-tution. It is a home.

“ e Division of Fisheries appreciates the cooperation and compliance by our tour-nament anglers in setting up their online accounts and submitting tournament dates
through the online system,” said Dan Stephenson, IDNR sheries chief. “ is program wouldn’t be possible without their help. Thanks to the tournament anglers of Illinois.”
Anyone interested in tournament shing in Illinois can go to the www.i shilli-nois.org website, click on the map on the homepage, nd

Republic Services will start the leaf vacuuming service for City residents of Centralia as of Monday, April 4. e vacu-uming service will last for a period of 4 weeks ending on Friday, April 29. e service will follow routes as estab-lished in August 2012 (for a detailed map see website at www.cityofcentralia.org under: Departments, City Clerk, Utilities). The usual landscape waste and limbs will continue to be collected every week in approved paper bags.
 e following are simple
rules that the City asks each resident to follow to make the process as smooth as possible:
1. Please rake your leaves to within four (4) feet of the curb but DO NOT place leaves on the street or in the gutter as they will clog the storm drains. is is typically the area between the sidewalk and the curb.
2. Please DO NOT place leaves behind or near obstacles such as mailboxes, trees, hedges, fences, etc. If there are any obstacles preventing your leaves from being picked up,
they WILL NOT be picked up.3. Please avoid parking
vehicles in front of piles of leaves on the day that they are to be collected. e vacuum trucks require a MINIMUM of forty ve (45) feet of curb access to safely operate. If a vehicle blocks access to the leaves, they WILL NOT be picked up.
4. Please DO NOT mix trash, yard waste such as limbs, weeds, grass or any other material with the leaves. Yard waste mixed with leaves causes safety concerns and equipment malfunction. ese items should be placed in approved paper bags for weekly collection or bundled properly.
Leaf collection will begin at 6:00 a.m. and will end by 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Leaves MUST be ready for vacuum by 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled day. If your leaves are not picked up on the regularly scheduled day (due to severe weather, equipment malfunction or a holiday) they will be picked up the following day or as soon as possible. Republic Services and the City of Centralia are committed to making this process successful and ensuring that a quality service is provided. If you have any concerns, feel free to call Republic Services, Inc. refuse collection and hauling corpo-ration at 800-631-1156, or Public Works Dept.: 533-7640.

Last week was de nitely a huge one in the world of presidential contenders.
• Bernie support surprises• Super delegates• Trump dominates media• All about protests• North Carolina, etc.• Rubio done?• Cruz hangs in• Kasich rising• Washington out• Who's dressing Hillary?F i r s t u p , B e r n i e .
Shockingly, Sanders won the Michigan primary last Tuesday night, a er the polls showed him recently at 20 points down, but climbing.
This could be "the shot heard round the world" for the Hillary camp. How will Bernie do now in other mid-western states like Illinois, Ohio and more on this Tuesday? (Our press time was Monday.)
Hillary isn't worried about Bernie catching her because she's got the super delegates locked up (currently 465 to Bernie's 25). If the super del-egates (the Democrat Party's concept to make sure no "candidate of the people" could win over the party's chosen candidate) were not in play, the race would now be 766 Hillary delegates to Bernie's 561. What a di er-ence the super delegate makes!
I wonder is this really the American way? More on Hillary later.
But who dominated the media news all last week? Of course the answer is: Trump, Trump, Trump.
First, last Tuesday, except for Idaho he won all the state primaries and as he would say "By a lot." Also, Ben Carson came out in support of Trump, and then starting in North Carolina the pro-testers at Trump rallies esca-lated. What has always struck me as odd is that protesters think it's their right to disrupt
a political rally. Let me give you an example to relate to. If the Centralia Orphans were having a pep rally to support their team, do you think the Mt. Vernon Rams would think it was okay to enter the rally and protest the Orphans? I'm sure both sides wouldn't think it appropriate, no matter whether it was an Orphans rally or a Rams rally. And, of course, doing so would only lead to prob-lems.
Back to the North Carolina rally. As protesters were being lead out of the area, and which the media fails to repeatedly mention, one pro-tester raised both arms and gave the booing crowd "the dreaded nger." You know the gesture that usually leads to violence, and it did. He was sucker punched by a 78 year old man, who obvi-ously didn't appreciate "the nger." I don't condone that action, but it does better explain what happened. en the protests grew at the St. Louis rally and then in Chicago the rally was shut down because of safety reasons according to Trump.
Trump, with his rhetoric at previous rallies, has also escalated the violence and needs to tone down this rhetoric for the safety of all at future rallies. On to other Republican candidates.
Marco Rubio continues his scripted attacks on Trump, but by all indica-tions will probably lose his home state of Florida and will withdraw from the race a er Tuesday.
Ted Cruz continues his attorney-like attack on Trump, trying to discredit him for asking his support-ers to pledge their votes to Trump. Cruz attempts to make it seem the voters are "pledging allegiance to Trump" the monarch.
In actuality, Cruz, as always, wants to make sure he is the alternate to Trump and will pick up supporters when "Trump fails."
Me a nw h i l e , O h i o Governor John Kasich has risen in the polls and has continued to take the high road in this election. Polls now show he will probably win his home state of Ohio, but a er that, then what? Trump and Cruz will take most future states.
In this election, we must remember that the major-ity of our citizens are fed up with the last 30 years of Washington politics. at is why Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Bernie Sanders and somewhat John Kasich are on the wave they are.
ey do not represent what the majority of Washington has been doing TO US. Marco Rubio, Hillary Clinton, Jeb Bush (by his name) and other candidates who have dropped out do.
On a nal lighter note, Hillary appeared on CNN Sunday night Town Hall. Her wardrobe choice throughout the race has been mentioned, but at the town hall she appeared in a distracting blue pant suit w i t h G I G A N T I C POCKETS with white piping. I had to laugh out loud because I couldn't' gure out if it signi ed her "deep pockets in this elec-tion" or if she was trying to get the Captain Kangaroo vote.

Spring Is About To Spring!Spring is beginning to tease us with the daffodils and other Spring blessings
popping out. It won't be long and the trees will start budding. With the few warm days recently I find myself so ready for Spring, but I haven't packed the sweaters away yet.
Easter comes early this year so it's time to pull the menu together for family and friends.
Honey Glazed HamThis ham is so moist and delicious that each slice practically melts in your
mouth. The sweet outer coating teams nicely with the saltiness of the ham.
1 (6 to 8 pound) smoked, fully cooked bone-in ham half
Glaze:2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup sugar1½ tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. ground cloves1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 cup honey
Preheat oven to 350°F. Remove hard outer skin from ham, leaving a thick layer of fat; place ham, fat side up, on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. With a sharp knife, score fat in a diamond design; insert meat thermometer into ham, making sure it does not touch fat or bone. Bake ham for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Remove ham; leave oven on.
Combine the sugars and spices, stirring well. Brush ham generously with honey. Pat brown sugar mixture over honey, coating ham thoroughly. Return ham to oven, and bake at 325°F for 30 to 40 minutes, or until meat thermom-eter registers 140°F. Yields 12 to 14 servings.
Garden Club Perfection Salad2 envelopes unflavored gelatin 1/2 cup cold water2 cups boiling water 1/2 cup sugar1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup cider vinegar1/4 tsp. salt 1 cup grated carrots3/4 cup finely shredded cabbage 1/3 cup chopped green bell pepper1 (2-oz.) jar diced pimiento, drained1 (15¼-ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
Combine gelatin and 1/2 cup cold water in a medium bowl; add 2 cups boiling water, stirring until gelatin dissolves. Add sugar, lemon juice, vinegar, and salt; stir well. Chill until the consistency of unbeaten egg white.
Gently fold carrot, pineapple, cabbage, green pepper, and pimiento into gelatin mixture. Pour gelatin mixture into a lightly oiled 5-cup mold. Cover and chill until firm. Unmold to serve. Yields 6 servings.
New Potatoes in Cream Sauce12 new potatoes 3 T. unsalted butter or margarine3 T. all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. salt1/4 tsp. white pepper 1 cup milk1/2 cup half and half Garnish: 1 T. chopped fresh chives
Wash potatoes; pare a 1-inch strip around center of each potato. Place pota-toes in a large saucepan; cover with water and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender; drain well.
Melt butter in a heavy saucepan over low heat; add flour, salt, and pepper, stirring until smooth. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in milk and half and half; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbly. Pour over potatoes; sprinkle with chives. Yields 4 servings.

Kaskaskia College soph-omore basketball player Elijah Watson of the Blue Devils and freshmen Jadah Anderson and Lajanea Kimbrough of the Blue Angels were named to the Region 24 and GRAC Teams.
E l i j a h Wa t s o n (Chicago) was a transfer student from the Univer-sity of Texas Pan American (UTPA) and attended St. Patrick’s High School in Chicago.
Watson averaged 15.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.
KC Coach Brian Hancock says, “Elijah was a very consistent force throughout the season for the Blue Devils. He brought a toughness that allowed him to compete at both ends of the oor. I am very excited that he was recognized as an All-Re-gion and All-Conference player”.
The Blue Devils fin-ished the season with a 20-12 record and 6th place in the Region standings.
Jadah Anderson (Ypsi-lanti, MI) averaged 15 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2 steals per game. KC Coach Adam Esses says, “Jadah was our point guard who led us in scoring and assists. She is a tremendous competitor
who can play at a very high level. She was vital to our success this season as we took 4th place in our Dis-trict this year.”
Lajanea Kimbrough (Indianapolis) averaged 14.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2 assists and had a free throw percentage of 80.2%. Esses says of Kimbrough, “Lajanea is well deserving of this honor as she did a fantastic job for the program in her rst season here. Not only could she score, but she was a great rebounder and one of our best defenders. She worked extremely hard all season long.”
The Blue Angels fin-ished 4th in Region 24 with a 9-9 record, 13-18 overall. To end the season, the Blue Angels won 7 of 9 games as they advanced to the Region 24 Semi -nals.

 e AnointingAt Bethany
It’s been said that love isn’t love until it’s given away. True love must nd an expression. Mary, the sister of Lazarus, who Jesus had raised from the dead, loved Jesus with all her heart. Mary expressed her love with a remarkable, selfless, extravagant act. e gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John record this event, with John telling us that it was Mary. “And being in Bethany at the house of Simon, the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came bearing an alabaster ask of very costly oil of spikenard. en she broke the ask and poured it on His head. But there were some who were indig-nant among themselves, and said, ‘Why was this fragrant oil wasted? For it might have been sold for
more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.’ And they criticized her sharply. But Jesus said, ‘Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me . . . She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached . . . what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.” (Mark 14:3-11)
Jesus was greatly touched by Mary’s extravagant act. What lessons can we learn?
AN EXTRAVAGANT LOVE. e fragrant oil that Mary poured out on Jesus was very costly. Those present assessed its value at over three hundred denarii – equivalent to a year’s salary today! He who is forgiven much loves much. To Mary it was an act of worship. The essence of worshiping Christ is to regard him with utmost love, respect, and devotion and to be willing to sacri-
ce to him what is most precious. is type of ex-travagant worship will always have its critics. is woman was criticized sharply. But costly worship pleases God. Abraham will-ingly laid his son Isaac on the altar of sacrifice. (Genesis 22) We must do no less. (Romans 12:1-2)
AN ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLE. Jesus told the woman’s critics to leave her alone. “She has done what she could.” (Mark 14:8) Have you given your best to Jesus in worship and witness? I met a woman in a motorized wheelchair. She lives in a low income, high-rise apartment build-ing. She can’t do much but she makes and passes out Jesus rocks. is young lady in a wheelchair takes smooth, round pebbles puts a cross sticker on it and on the back with a marker pen writes, “Jesus loves you.” I found another one of her Jesus rocks yes-terday on a newspaper box. She engaged an elementary principle in worship and witness. “She has done what she could.” Mary had her critics but Jesus praised her. What about you? Are you doing your best to worship and witness for Jesus?
AN EXPRESSION OF THE GOSPEL. Jesus re-vealed the spiritual applica-tion of Mary’s sel ess act.
“She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial.” is anointing of Jesus’ body happened just a couple of days before Passover when the paschal lamb would be slain and the blood sprinkled on the mercy seat. Jesus came to die on the cross for the sins of the world. (Romans 5:8) In the Last Supper, Jesus demonstrated the gospel at the Passover meal: the bread - His body; the cup – His blood. (Mark 14:22-26) Paul makes it clear that Jesus died, was buried, and on the third day arose. (I Corinthians 15:1-8) is is the essential essence of the gospel – you must believe. (I Corinthians 15:9-11)
AN EMBLEM FOR ETERNITY. Jesus pro-claimed that wherever the gospel was preached, Mary’s sel ess act would be told as a memorial to her. She le a lasting legacy by her extravagant worship and witness. Men like Jacob and Cornelius le a lasting memorial. (Genesis 18:10-22; Acts 10:4) Follow Mary’s example of extrava-gant worship and leave a lasting legacy that pleases God. Worship the Savior who died for our sins.

This coming November we will be voting for the top o ce of President
of America. It would be im-perative that we have all the facts before we enter that voting booth. is will be the most critical election in history.
For sure we need to know the true facts regarding the status of our country. Without a doubt the economy should be high on our list. We hear a lot about the national debt where the de cit just passed 19 trillion dollars. We need to under-stand just what one trillion is. We all know what one million is. Count 999,999 plus 1 and you have a million. It takes one thou-sand million to make one billion. Then it takes one thousand billion to make one trillion. So we owe over 19 trillion to people we have borrowed from that we pay interest to; people like China, Japan, etc.
We also have a debt of unfunded liabilities that are estimated anywhere from 127 trillion up to 211 trillion depending on who is calcu-lating the total. ey are the amount, at any given time, by which future payment
obligations exceed the present value of funds avail-able to pay them. Obviously this is totally unsustainable and can never be paid o . To give you a little better per-spective of how much this is, assuming we balance the budget from now on and that we paid one billion dollars a day 365 days a year, it would take thousands of years to pay it o . Obviously that is not going to happen. Believe it or not, that total GNP (Gross National Product) including the USA, of all the nations of the world is only 78 trillion dollars.
How did this happen? We didn't do it per se; it was done by the politicians we elected. You see they know very little about economics but they are very good at making promises. I'm talking about both political parties. Our founding fathers had no way of fore-seeing this over 200 years ago when they wrote the Constitution and Bill of Rights. We can't blame them. They wanted to keep the Federal Government small because they migrated to America to get away from the tyrants, kings, dictators, etc. e saw the Federal's
duty to protect the citizens in time of war or disaster. ey were to serve one or two terms and return to their everyday jobs.
So what happened? Today they spend millions to get elected to President of Congress that pays $200,000 to $400,000 (President) and yet serve as long as they can stay in o ce ey have their own medical plan, their own retirement plan and stay in o ce as long as they are re-elected. And they all end up millionaires. I will close this for now, but there is much more. Future tops will include: inflation, unem-ployment, taxes, cost of living, social security and Obamacare.

Three Sandoval FFA members took part in the event. Mika Taylor partici-pated in the Extemporaneous d i v i s i o n . I n t h e Extemporaneous Public Speaking CDE, participants are given 30 minutes to deliver a speech on one of three assigned agricultural topics. Students must learn
to think on their feet and develop an argument quickly and persuasively. Taylor's topic to speak on was "Indoor Landscaping." Levi Brown presented a pre-pared 6-8 minute informa-tional problem solving speech at the event.
Sandoval f reshmen Alyssa Atchison and Hayleigh McClaren partici-pated in the FFA Creed divi-sion. Students must present the FFA Creed from memory and answer ques-tions about its meaning and purpose. e event boosts
self-con dence and devel-ops their ability to commu-nicate in a powerful, profes-sional manner.
FFA members who dem-onstrate outstanding speak-ing and communication skills are enhancing their ability to lead and be suc-cessful in the work place. FFA's mission is to dedi-cated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leader-ship, personal growth and career success through ag-ricultural education.

WEBINAR: “STRATEGIC PRIORITIESFOR LOCAL GOVERNMENTS DEALINGWITH THE CURRENT FISCAL CLIMATE”
Wednesday, March 16, 2016 The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area 13
• It was President Franklin Roosevelt who made the fol-lowing sage observation: "Government by organized money is just as dangerous as government by organized mob."
• Are you a ceraunophili-ac? If so, Central Florida, is the place to live. e area between Tampa Bay on the peninsula's west coast and Cape Canaveral on the east coast is known as Lightning Alley, and Florida is the light-ning capital of the United States — an excellent home for anyone who has an extreme love of thunder and lightning.
• Singer Katy Perry report-edly has a cat named Kitty Purry.
• If you're an animal lover who's fond of Corgis — the Welsh dog known for its ex-tremely short legs — you might want to take a look at the Munchkin cat. Only rec-ognized as a separate breed in 1995, this cat is character-ized by the shortness of its legs.
• When Edgar Allan Poe rst started writing his most famous poem, " e Raven," he intended it to be short. Over the next decade, though, he kept adding to it, until it finally reached a length of 18 verses. The poem's publication in 1845
had a mixed critical recep-tion; William Butler Yeats called it "insincere and vulgar" and said "its execu-tion [is] a rhythmical trick," and Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I see nothing in it." "The Raven" was wildly popular with the public, though, and Poe became —
for a brief time — the most famous writer in America.
*** ought for the Day:
"He who does not bellow the truth when he knows the truth makes himself the accomplice of liars and forgers." — Charles Peguy

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Consider moving beyond the usual methods to nd a more creative means of handling a dif- cult on-the-job situation. Avoid confrontation and, instead, aim for cooperation.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Seasonal change creates a new look for the outdoors. It also in-spires Taureans to redo their own environments, and this is a good week to start redoing both your home and workplace. Enjoy.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A misunderstanding needs to be straightened out so the wrong im-pression isn’t allowed to stand. If necessary, o er to support the use of a third party to act as an impar-tial arbitrator.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A career change o ering what you want in money and responsibili-ties could involve moving to a new location. Discuss this with family members before making a deci-sion.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Feel-ing mi ed over how you believe you were treated is understand-able. But before you decide to “set things straight,” make sure the whole thing wasn’t just a misinter-pretation of the facts.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Showing you care makes it easier to build trust and gain an advantage in handling a delicate situation. What you learn from this experience also will help you understand yourself better.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Planning for the future is ne, especially if you include the roles
that family members may be asked to play. Don’t be surprised if some hidden emotions are revealed in the process.SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem-ber 21) Making choices highlights much of the week, and you have a head start here, thanks to your ability to grasp the facts of a situa-tion and interpret them in a clear-cut manner.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Carrying a torch can be a two-way situation: It can either keep you tied to the past or help light your way to the future. e choice, as always, has to be yours.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your watchwords this week are: “Focus.” “Focus.” “Fo-cus.” Don’t let yourself be distract-ed from what you set out to do. ere’ll be time later to look over other possibilities.AQUARIUS (January 20 to Febru-ary 18) A workplace opportunity might require changes you’re not keen on making. Discuss the plus-ses and minuses with someone familiar with the situation before you make a decision.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Love and romance are strong in your aspect this week. If you’ve al-ready met the right person, expect your relationship to grow. And if you’re still looking, odds are you’ll soon be nding it.BORN THIS WEEK: You ap-proach life in a wise and measured manner, which gives you an edge in many areas.
