The beach is eroding on an annual basis and sand renourishment is needed to maintain an erosion buffer zone. The sand renourishment program was agreed to by the Department of Transport and the Shire of Esperance as the best management option for this section of coast. The costs are split 50% Shire and 50% Department of Transport’s Coastal Adaptation Protection Grant. By providing sand renourishment, we are protecting public and private infrastructure such as footpaths, electrical, roads and private property. The location of erosion is an accessible section of the coastline. Sand renourishment involves relocating sand from an appropriate location and replacing it in specific problem areas. This type of sacrificial sand renourishment has been proven to represent the best value for money management option to date for addressing the issue on this section of coast. Other methods of protection would not only cost more, but would also move the problem further along the coast where there is no Youth Precinct Takes Shape The new and developing youth precinct is shaping up and the community tree planting day on Sunday will help protect the area. The new Skate Park is progressing well, and despite the inconsistent weather is still on track to open to the community in November. Summer Body Winter Pass The Bay of Isles Leisure Centre has a special deal to help you get in shape for Summer. Pick up a Winter Pass from BOILC. You don’t have to be a member to get your Summer Body. Everyone is invited to complete 10 visits on the Winter Pass and receive a voucher to attend a class, the gym or pool for free, to use yourself or give to a friend. If you sign up for membership this month with your completed Winter Pass , you’ll receive two weeks free membership. New and existing members will have their completed Winter Pass and redeemed vouchers entered into a draw for a stand up paddle board and wetsuit from Dempster Sporting. Environmental Officers have a clear understanding of long-term coastal processes for this section of coast thanks to several long-term datasets and many years of observational records. There have also been a considerable amount of reports prepared on the erosion that has been affecting the Esperance bay over the past 20 years. The community tree planting day has been organised to begin the landscaping of the area around the developing youth precinct, to protect the dunes and to provide natural buffers to protect against strong winds. The local plant species chosen take all these factors into consideration as well as to allow high visibility of the area so skaters can show off their skills, and keeps the area integrated and inclusive of the foreshore and town centre. The community is invited to come along on Sunday and take the opportunity to make history by planting a seedling that will become an established part of a soon-to-be dynamic part of Esperance. Gloves, shovels and drinking water will be provided and volunteers are encouraged to bring their own hats and enclosed footwear. This is an all ages event and no tree planting experience is necessary. Volunteers will be treated to a free sausage sizzle lunch following the event.
