Sometimes the humidity and scorching warmth make us feel like we’re slogging through our lives. I hear from some people that when it’s really hot, they don’t feel like they can accomplish anything. Maybe life itself is getting to us. We often feel the same way when we’re heavy-hearted and under stress. The Psalmist felt that way thousands of years ago when he wrote, “day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer” (Psalms 32:4). Back in damp and muggy Arkansas, in the summer heat we used to say that we were okay as long as it got cool at night, to bring respite, but the Psalmist knows no reprieve from the heavy hand of circumstance. Of course, if we read the whole psalm, we learn that there is relief, and that comes in trusting in God and turning it over to God. In Psalm 32, the reason for the heaviness of life isn’t August doldrums, but unacknowledged sin. When the Psalmist confesses his sin to God and receives forgiveness, happiness is his. We, too, have that chance. To repent and confess everything that weighs us down doesn’t necessarily make our circumstances different, but it certainly makes our attitude about our lives different. We know that we are free, and that the Lord will take care of us no matter what we go through. It’s like finding a refuge from the heat of life. Joel and Victoria Osteen write: No matter what you are facing in life today, trust that Almighty God will come through for you. Trust that His Word is always true. In Psalm 32, David calls God his “hiding place.” In other words, when you place your trust in God, you can find refuge in Him. You are actually hidden from the enemy when you choose to trust. Always remember, when circumstances seem overwhelming, don’t look at what’s happening around you; look to God. He is the author and finisher of your faith. Choose to trust that He is the one who is ordering your steps. Find security in knowing that He is making your crooked places straight and your rough places smooth. Trust in Him and live in the blessing and everlasting life He has prepared for you! (Joel and Victoria Osteen, Today’s Word with Joel and Victoria, July 24, 2012) Such a refuge from the high temperatures of life is better than air conditioning! So, cool off. Get out of the heat and find relief. Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them. You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance” (Psalms 32:1-7). Grace and peace, Martin

Dear Friends,

Is the summer heat getting to you? Sometimes the humidity and scorching warmth make usfeel like we’re slogging through our lives. I hear from some people that when it’s really hot, theydon’t feel like they can accomplish anything. Maybe life itself is getting to us. We often feel thesame way when we’re heavy-hearted and under stress. A VIEW FROM A PEWBy Don De Vries

People sometimes tell me that they have mixed feelings about theirrelationship with God. Sometimes they feel real close to Him, and

at other times struggle to know how to relate to God at all. Do youever have this experience? How can God come and go in my life like the wind that sometimesblows, and is sometimes very still? What goes on here?

The Bible makes it clear that God is omnipresent; that is, He is always at hand. Why, then, do Ifeel that He is so distant sometimes?

The problem stems from our tendency to rely on our feelings rather than on the truth of God’slove for us. We search our feelings and our ability to sense God, rather than to rely on the sureknowledge of His faithfulness and willingness to participate actively in our lives every day. Whenwe don’t “feel” the presence of God, we need to look at ourselves to find the reason.

If we want to feel comfortable with our knowledge of atomic fission, we have to put our selves towork to learn about atomic fission. It may be difficult to understand, and surely takes time tostudy the subject, but it is possible to master it when we put in a sincere effort. It doesn’t happenin a few days, but, over time, we find ourselves relating more to the details of atomic fission, andthrough the effort, we begin to have a working understanding of the subject.

God, who is omnipresent, all-knowing, and all powerful, is certainly a more complex subject thaneven atomic fission. That’s why He spent 33 years living in our world to reveal Himself in JesusChrist. And in the words of Jesus, which are found in the Bible, we can find an understanding ofthe relationship we have with God, and understanding will replace the feelings that cause ourrelationship to ebb and flow. In John 15:15, Jesus tells us, “I have made known everything toyou that I have heard from my Father.” Believing this, weshould make every effort to hear what Jesus has to say. Wefind His words throughout the four Gospels where nothing iskept from us. Read them out loud, read silently, read withothers, but hear and know what He says, Reread them. Newunderstanding happens each time we do.

I never have been able to rely on my feelings about myrelationship with God. Those feelings come and go. They are based onme, and are subject to my moods and circumstances. Who wants to rely on that? Everyoneelse has the same problem when we try to feel close to God. Sure, there are times when thewarm fuzzies come over us when, in joy, we realize God’s constant care and love, but whenthings get tough, these feelings can quickly fade away. Practice faith, pray constantly, studyChrist’s words, be in touch with God as you are with your family and friends. Let Him and Hislove, as we see it in Jesus Christ, be in your knowledge and understanding rather than yourfeelings. Hear what Jesus has to tell us, and be truly blessed. Happy August in God’s presence!

Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat

our cell phone?

What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?

What if we flipped through it several times a day?

What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?

What if we used it to receive messages from the text?

What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it?

What if we gave it to Kids as gifts?

What if we used it when we traveled?

What if we used it in case of emergency?

This is something to make you go....hmm...where is my Bible?

Oh, and one more thing.

Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our Bible being

disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill.

Makes you stop and think 'where are my priorities? And no dropped

OUTREACH AND MISSION

Gilead Food PantryThe Gilead Food Pantry received a $1,750donation from the Carmel Teacher’sAssociation. We certainly thank theAssociation and all of its members for theirgenerous support of this outreach mission.

In addition, the Food Pantry received $597 from Church WorldService, representing its portion of the monies raised in lastOctober’s CROP Hunger Walk.

The Gilead Food Pantry is open Friday mornings from 10:00 am until noon to offer food to those whoare in need. Donations of food or funds are always welcome. Food items can be placed in the basketin the lounge while funds are best given directly to Marj Williams orplaced in the offering basket with the notation “Food Pantry” on theenvelope or memo line of your check.

Current and ongoing needs of the Gilead Food Pantry: complete pancakemix and pancake syrup, canned tuna, canned soups, canned fruit, cannedvegetables, especially corn, pasta and spaghetti sauce. Donations of money are also helpful so wecan buy things needed on a weekly basis, such as chicken and other items that are in low supply.

The Salvation Army has begun supporting our food pantry by offering free breakfast to food pantryclients on Friday mornings from 10:00 am until 11:30 am. We greatly appreciate their ministry!

For more information on this important ministry, please see Marj Williams.

While the goods received during the Kid’s Kitchen Collections have been a great help to the foodpantry, please remember that other things continue to be needed, so please continue to bringother items on non-communion Sundays. Thanks!

Gilead Church School Kid’s Kitchen

As has been our tradition, children bring an offering for the food pantry on thefirst Sunday of each month. We are expanding upon this tradition byintroducing the Gilead Church School Kid’s Kitchen. Each month will have

a different theme, and children are requested to bring up an item related to thattheme with them during “Time for the Young at Heart”.

The children recently brought home a calendar for the year to remind them what to bringeach month. Please help your child to remember to bring this important offering for ourfood pantry ministry. The August theme is “Toilet Paper”.

The calendar is also posted on the Church School Bulletin Board by the Church Schoolentrance. If you have any questions about this offering project please see Diana DrakeBehan.

Groundswellsby Rob LoAlbo

Session met on Tuesday, July 10th at 7:30 PM. The meetingbegan with a scripture reading from Joshua 1.9, as chosen bythe pastor:

Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

The scripture was followed up with a complementary writingfrom Joel Osteen, to highlight some of the scripture’s themes:

No matter what today has in store, as a believer, you can approach the day with boldness and confidence. Why?Because the Lord is with you, and in Him is everything you need in this life! That means that if you needprovision for something today, provision is with you. If you need wisdom today, wisdom is with you. If you needstrength, joy or peace today, it’s with you. You can be confident today knowing that all of your needs aresupplied spiritually, physically and emotionally because the Lord is with you. And best of all, He’s promisednever to leave you. Remember, don’t ever let the lies from the enemy or pressure from the world keep you fromtaking hold of everything the Lord has for you. Open your heart by faith and receive whatever you need today.Step out in boldness and strength because the Lord is with you!

After a prayer, Session then reported on and discussed the following:

In June, there were 16 pastoral care visits and 23 pastoral care phone conversations, with onefuneral and one Presbytery function.

Gilead served communion on July 1st.

Phone call recommendations from other churches were made regarding a St. Pauly clothingshed for our grounds. Since all were favorable, Session approved a shed for our church.

Discussion on whether the church should have a policy or not regarding recording devices andcameras during a service was concluded. Session approved the insertion of language into thebulletin that asks for consideration of others during service.

Policy on the procedures regarding offering was submitted and approved.

An examination of the mission of Session was made, citing responsibilities of its members.

Carmel Nursery School presented their end of the year report, citing great success withenrollment, income, and expenditures for the 2011-12 school year.

The financial report was presented, which included a steadily decreasing, but still presentdeficit. In regards to the renovation fund, there was cited a continued improvement indonations, not only from those who have given in the past, but also from those who are new tothe fund. Thanks were expressed to all, with encouragement to the congregation to continuestepping out in faith in this manner.

Citing many who would not be present in August because of vacation, Session voted to notmeet until September.

Thanks for following our activities. Please continue to pray for us. We continue to seekguidance, instruction, assurance, unity and focus, as expressed and modeled by our members. Ifyou have any questions, feel free to approach a Session member for further discussion.

As a gentle reminder, we ask that if you photograph or record yourloved one’s participation in the service, that you be discreet so asnot to distract those around you from their own worship experience.

The CNS Pre-K Program is Gilead's nonsectarian schoolfor 2 1/2 to 5 year olds. Since it was founded in 1949, thePre-School has been a respected community resource forearly childhood education. Our staff consists of threeteachers and an aide with many years of experience at CNSbetween them. All are active members of the communityand volunteers in the school district.

The school offers two, three and five day programs. Theyfollow the same calendar as the Carmel Central Schooldistrict.

In preparing a child for Kindergarten, their philosophy is teaching the whole child to grow. Theyprovide a daily routine balanced between academic skills and lessons, crafts, free and structured playtime, music, story time, computer time, snack, and outdoor activities on the large playground.

The curriculum was developed in conjunction with the area kindergarten teachers to best prepare thechild for kindergarten and instill an enthusiasm for learning in a fun loving environment. Utilizing theteam teaching method, three teachers give a student to teacher ratio of approximately 8 to 1.

For children scheduled to enter public school in September of the year, we routinely prepare adetailed evaluation of Kindergarten readiness.
