It’s either sunny and way too warm, or rainy and still way too warm. What happened to fall? The leaves are falling, but it’s not crisp and fall-like. I SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO WALK MY DOG AT 10PM IN MY FLIP-FLOPS! I even went and looked at the monthly temperature averages for New Jersey. It should be a little cooler outside, at least in the evening. Oh well, it looks like in November the temps are going to fall – big time! Of course, in March we’re going to be praying for this weather! We’re never quite satisfied, are we? We always want something else, something other than what we have. We may think of it as looking forward to something, but that’s not it. Real joy comes from living in the moment. Appreciating the moment we’re in. Enjoying the moment we’re in. Children live in the moment. What’s the point in getting upset by rain? It’s gonna rain anyway, whether we like it or not! Can we learn to appreciate rain? My attitude towards rain is… “once yer wet, yer wet.” And it makes stuff grow. I walked into Morning Prayer today, on a gray, rainy day, and I asked, “Who would rather be at home, rolled up in a quilt, listening to the rain and reading a book?” We all raised our hands. And then, after Morning Prayer, the electricity went out! I accomplished as much as I could without electricity and then I decided to go home and write this article. But first (confession here), I went upstairs and rolled up in my quilt and listened to the rain and read my book. I figured Jesus gave me that time and I decided to appreciate it. Thank you, Jesus! Especially now, as we are poised to dive into the pre-Christmas rush… DON’T. Just don’t. Look around you. Dare to live in the moment. What’s the weather like? Whatever it is, appreciate it. Stop, take a moment, take a deep breath, and just live into it. That is the very beginning of gratitude, the very beginning of thankfulness. Just to be able to stop and take a breath. We have so much to be grateful for – the children running into church, getting ready for the Christmas pageant soon. As you sit in church every Sunday, take a look around you. There are so many good people around us. Are you grateful for them? I am. I think of Paul writing his letters to all his churches. Sometimes he was putting out fires, sometimes he was setting someone straight, struggling, juggling, keeping all the balls, all those little churches, in the air, viable, at the same time. But mainly he was just grateful, “I thank my God every time I remember you,” he wrote to the church in Phillippi. As I write this, we’re very close to Halloween, a really popular holiday. And it should be. Hallowe’en is fun. It’s a good time to be silly, to laugh at ourselves, to laugh at our fears. (NO! It is NOT the Devil’s birthday! Puhleeze…) And then we have Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving doesn’t get enough attention. It’s like a hiccup on the way to Christmas. Don’t let that happen to your time of Thanksgiving. Give yourself the moment, the breath to be thankful for all you have, the love of family and friends, the love of God. Live in that moment. Live in the now, the everlasting now of God’s love for you. Camden Christmas 2017

For months we have been working to prepare for Camden Christmas 2017! We have moved the event this year!! Camden Christmas will be held at St Paul’s on Market Street in Camden. We have gathered names through the St Paul’s, wonderful, Summer Camp (sponsored by Project Interaction) and will add to that list at our first Halloween Party which will be held October 28 from 2:00 - 5:00pm. During our Halloween party, kids will be given a bag filled with “goodies” including candy, cereal, fruit and more! They will also receive a flyer to invite them to meet St. Nicholas on December 3 at St. Paul’s!

Please – keep the children and parents in your prayers along with all the volunteers. It is truly an honor to work alongside such a great team made up of folks from St. Andrews in Camden, Church of the Good Shepherd in Pitman and Grace Church in Haddonfield.

Thank you for all of your help!

Deacon Carl Dunn

Summer Lunch Program a Success

Children receiving lunches at Good Shepherd this summer celebrated the end of the summer and the beginning of the new school year with a barbecue held in the church hall on August 31th. Sponsored by our many faithful volunteers, children, their families and volunteers enjoyed a time of fellowship and friendship with hot dogs and cake. All agreed that the Summer Lunch Program was a success and are looking forward to bringing it back next year. The lunches were supplied by the Food Bank of South Jersey with funding provided by the US Department of Agriculture and the NJ Department Agriculture. Throughout southern New Jersey the Food Bank’s Summer Meals Program fed more than 8,000 children with close to a half million meals. Here at Good Shepherd we served lunches three days per week to between 3 and 9 children. All children between the ages of five and eighteen were eligible.

Many thanks to our incredible volunteers who made it all possible. They were: Barbara Elliott, Rich and Ellen Bellamente, Jeff and Beth Snodgrass, Pat and Lee Braidwood, Sue Burkhard, George Farley, Georgeanne and Jim Moore, Chuck Lezenby,

Lindsay Dymtro, Karen MacKay, Karen Dunn, Chris Southwick, Tom and Marie Rigg, Susan Murry, Elizabeth, Kirsten and Victoria Nelson, Susan Baker, Carl and Ellie Dunn, Sue Somers, Mother Susan, Deb and Vivian Prieto, April Winship, Grace Yahnke, Joy Skow, Jennifer Spears, Meg Bebey, and Sue Dixon.

Finally, a special thanks to Jack Daugherty who brought the proposal to the Vestry, attended the required training, and was there every day ensuring that everything ran smoothly. Thank you Jack.

NOVEMBER'S ADULT FORUM

We begin a new series called "Eclipsing Empire: Paul,

Rome and the Kingdom of God". Join prominent New

Testament Scholars, Marcus Borg and Dominic Crossan on

location in Turkey as they trace the Apostle Paul's footsteps

throughout the Roman Empire. We will get to see historical

pagan and Christian sites while learning about Roman

practices, cultural practices and the theology Paul was

refuting. Join us in the Conference Room following the 10

a.m. service. Attend one or all of these sessions and you

will enjoy the beauty of Turkey, the religious sites and find

Borg and Crossan's knowledge inspiring.

I found this little note from Science to Religion in a greeting card while we were on vacation. I love the droll approach to what is essentially a non-argument. Faith is a matter of faith! Our belief in God has nothing to do with what we can prove. What a waste of time! Our belief in God has to do with our faith. We have all sorts of things we believe in without proof – love for example. Can anyone prove love? No. Yet we know love exists. We have fallen into the modern trap of assuming that anything of value requires proof. That’s pretty limiting. If love requires proof, doesn’t that cheapen love? If faith requires proof what happens to the leap of faith, the wonder that comes with letting go and just believing? Ask a child sometime (if you dare!) how they know their mommy or daddy loves them. My guess is the answer will be something very like, “I just do.” How do we know when we are loved by God? We just do. We have faith.

Blessings, Mother Susan+

Contemplative Prayer Time Before Our Worship Services

For those who seek a time for quiet prayer on Saturdays and Sundays, Mother Susan opens the church on Saturdays at 4:30 PM for the 5:30 PM service. We ask that 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM be a quiet prayerful time. Likewise, for Sundays, she will be in the Church at 9 AM for a quiet time from 9 AM to 9:30 AM.

We ask that all who come early to church honor these times as times for quiet prayer and contemplation.

Thank You God for Home BY ALICE AULTMAN

As I travel around and view beautiful homes and apartment complexes, my mind does strange things. I can appreciate the beauty of fine architecture and love to see the way people decorate for the holidays and choice of plants; but I have no desire to live other than where I do.

After a day of travel or activity, no matter how interesting, it is a special feeling to open the door and enter my home. Yes, the kitchen cabinets are gently streaked with various foods, things are just where I left them, there is dust on the furniture, and the rug could stand a session with the vacuum cleaner. But, whatever the situation, it is familiar territory. The furnishings and photographs are mine as are the books and decorative items. What a blessing it is to have a sanctuary to be away from the business of the outside world.

My heart goes out to those who are homeless, the lonesome elderly and those who do not find solace in their living situation. Yes, it would be nice not to be alone, but the Lord figured that some of us were meant to face living without a spouse or stay-at-home children. I’ve done my time raising children, love my grandchildren and praise the good Lord that all of the siblings have decent homes and families.

As I study the Bible, one thing that comes out many times is the fact God has a plan, and if we turn our hearts and minds to Him, our lives will be fulfilled. Some mornings I wonder what is in store for the day and find it hard to get going, but I know God has a plan, so I will follow his directions and do what has to be done.

Thank you God for my home and the directions you give me for my daily life.

OUTREACH

We rec’d some wonderful loads of men’s shoes and clothing! Thank you so very much! They will be put to good use by those in need in Camden! PLEASE when leaving clothing for Camden, place them in MANAGEABLE SIZE BAGS on our front porch! Please no boxes – just BAGS! Carl and I deliver them ourselves and we can fit far more in our car when they are in bags instead of boxes. Thank you in advance! Please drop any clothing and shoes that you wish to donate at our house, 223 Highland Terrace, Pitman. We will be happy to take them to those who can use them!

Thanks again, Deacon Carl and Ellie Dunn

CHURCH HISTORY DISPLAY

I hope that you have had time to view the latest exhibit from Gen Portocalis in the glass case in the Parrish hall. This is our rotating church exhibit. They are placements with vintage views of Pitman! I am looking for items that showcase our church’s and our congregant’s lives so that we better get to know each other and our shared heritage. I will take good care of your items and make sure that they are returned to you when the exhibit ends in 3 or 4 months.

Thanks so much! Ellie Dunn

Prayer Shawl/Caring Hands Ministry

Every so often we get a request for a Prayer Shawl to be given to someone in need. Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes during grieving periods after the loss of a loved one. The Shawls are crocheted or knitted by the women in this ministry. Every other Tuesday morning you will find our Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the shawls in our Conference room. They are made with prayer for those who will receive them. I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and comfort these shawls have brought to so many people. They need not be members of our parish. Need is spread everywhere. If you know of a need, just ask Pat Braidwood

CRAFTERS NEEDED

This year we will be having the Holly Fair on Saturday, December 2nd. If you or someone you know is a crafter and would be interested in renting

a table please let us know.

DEADLINE

The deadline for the November 2017 Crook will be on October 15, 2017. Please e-mail all articles and pictures to [email protected].

Treasurer's Blog - November 2017 Results through September 2017

Total Income: Here is a breakdown of our total income for nine months of 2017:

Budget Actual

Loose Plate 1,700 1,662 Envelopes 153,500 168,469

Special 4,350 4,216

Other 225 25

Income 159,775 174,372

Our envelope income for nine months has exceeded our estimate. It appears that while we didn’t receive as many pledges for 2017 as we had hoped, the offerings reflect that our unpledged income is strong. The financial team is appreciative of your support.

Total expenses: Here is a recap of our total expenses for nine months of 2017.

Budget Actual

Expenses 163,609 162,702

Our expenses are in line with our estimates so far this year.

By the time you are reading this report, we will have concluded our Fall Stewardship Campaign. If you haven’t pledged in the spring and are unclear which campaign to be a part of, you still have time to return a pledge card before year end. There should be some blank pledge on the coffee hour table or you can ask one of the ushers in church if you are not attending coffee hour. Pledge cards are important in the preparation of next year’s budget.

Please look for the special envelopes in the box of your pledge envelopes and include something in them no matter how small or large in addition to your normal contributions. All of those “extras” add up during the course of the year to help us meet our expenses. Thank you for all of your support.

The above report is specific to our operating expenses. Several members of the Property Committee have developed a long- range plan for things that break or wear out. A fund named the Squirrel’s Nest has now been formed for financing the replacement of these items rather than having to handle them in an emergency situation. So far, we have collected $1,252.

Sunday School Needs You!

Our church has a vibrant Sunday School program, and we want to see that continue. During the 2016-2017 school year, Amanda McNally, Jenniffer Harrington, and the Sunday School committee worked hard to restructure our Sunday School. We now have shorter teaching terms, grade level groupings that allow for reasonable class sizes, and a curriculum that the children enjoy. However, we need your help to keep this important program running smoothly. Soon it will be time for our current leaders to move on, so others have the opportunity to serve. The Sunday School committee would like to see leaders take on a 3 year term, but starting in different school years. That way there will always be one leader that has had experience. We are looking for one leader to volunteer for August 2018 through July 2021 and another leader to begin in August 2019. Having a rotating leadership allows more parishioners the opportunity to serve God and our children without getting burnt out or feeling overwhelmed. We ask you to prayerfully consider stepping in to help run the Sunday School program for three years. You may contact our current Sunday School leaders Amanda McNally and Jenniffer Harrington to learn more about running the Sunday School.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi to all you wonderful grass mowers,

A great big thank you to all who mowed and weed whacked and blew away grass clippings. The church yard and the rectory never looked so good. I hear so many compliments and just wanted all of you to know that our Parish family takes notice!

Thank you again. Sincerely,

Sue B.

14th Annual Stockings for Soldiers Please Help Send Some Holiday Cheer to Our Troops.

Shelly Harris has put a large collection box in the back of the church. This will run from Oct. 1st until Nov. 12th. This marks the 14th consecutive year to send personalized greetings to our brave men and women in uniform serving our country half-way around the world in the remotest areas of Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, Egypt, Qatar Kuwait, Jordan, Kosovo, Romania, South Korea and parts unknown. This project sent over 9,000 stockings filled with goodies last year. We want to continue to let them know we are thinking of them while they are away from home and their families. We need your help to fill them up with Holiday Cheer and Goodies that remind them of home. The Good Shepherd Quilt Guild will again be sewing holiday stockings to donate. Good Shepherd ECW Woman of Honor

On Saturday, October 14, a group Good Shepherd members attended the NJ District ECW Women of Honor Luncheon. This event takes place every three years. The ECW groups of all of the Episcopal churches in the NJ Dioceses are invited to nominate a woman from their parish to be honored. This year, the Women at the Well unanimously nominated Jenniffer Harrington. She was honored along with women from 36 other churches. Jenniffer dedicates her time and talent in countless ways. She has planned and led numerous in-reach and out-reach activities for the Women at the Well. She has led the planning and organization of the very successful annual women’s retreat for several years. She has taught Sunday School for several years and helped to organize and revitalize a very successful Sunday School program. I addition to these things, she has served on the Vestry, is a member of our choir, volunteers at the Pitman Pantry and co-chairs the Holly Fair with her husband, Rich. For all of these things and more, the Women at the Well felt that Jenniffer is very deserving of this recognition. She is a true leader, dedicated to her faith and her church.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT PUTTING OUR BELOVED PARISH,

GOOD SHEPHERD, IN YOUR WILL?
