“We Love Our Church”
Lent is a time of Fasting and Feasting
Fast from judging others;
Feast on Christ dwelling in them.
Fast from fear of illness;
Feast on the healing power of God.
Fast from words that pollute;
Feast on speech that purifies.
Fast from discontent;
Feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger;
Feast on patience.
Fast from pessimism;
Feast on optimism.
Fast from negatives;
Feast on alternatives.
Fast from bitterness;
Feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self-concern;
Feast on compassion.
Fast from suspicion;
Feast on truth.
Fast from gossip;
Feast on purposeful silence.
Fast from problems that overwhelm;
Feast on prayer that sustains.
Fast from worry;
Feast on faith.
So fast and feast on these suggestions!

Discovering Different
A friend of mine, Greg Webster, has a great blog that I follow. Over 20 years ago, Greg changed where he and his family lived, how he spent his life working, and many other things about his life. Two decades later, he talks about “Discovering Different Right Under Your Nose”. Discovering Different hit me this year as I administered ashes on Ash Wednesday, which can certainly have a look of deciding to be different for a day! Not quite the dramatic change Greg was talking about, but change in our lives includes all change, not just change that might include moving to a new location or how or where we work. Not just permanent change, but also temporary change.
Change does include wearing ashes on your forehead for a day. Change includes the decision to make less money, spend and save it differently, give more, sell stuff, and so much more. Change will bring comments, judgement, release, freedom, pain.
The type of change my friend Greg discusses was not comfortable and I doubt was accepted by the entire family – at least not all at once! But Greg and his wife made a decision that change was needed to help them reach goals that could not be obtained if they just kept living to retire or reach certain financial goals. Looking at their lives now, Greg says he loves what he does, but more important, he loves how he lives. “If you get on a path that suites you, whether you work or not is a non-issue.”
Greg and I agree on something very important and that is, we need to be following God and where He may lead us. That might bring about a change in how we apply what we hear and learn about God. It may change how we practice loving each other. How we listen. Even, how we think about each other, and so much more.
I have been thinking a lot about change for almost two years as I am trying to see where God is leading. This week, I read about a professor who told his students to seek a “connection between what they learn and how they live”. Then he reminded them that good Christian thinking always
leads to service. Again – good Christian thinking always leads to service. I pray Good Shepherd supplies you with plenty of “good Christian thinking and helps you decide to make the changes that God is calling you to consider.
If you were totally free, what would change in your life? Where would God lead you once you cut the mental chains? Let us pray for each other that we would be bold, brave, and fearless as we follow Christ, not just during Lent, but all through our lives. May how we live be a lesson to our children that leads them to “Discover Different” in how they live the rest of their lives.

PICTURES!
Let’s get in the habit of taking pictures of
everything around here! Pictures of Sunday
School, meetings, even of events at services if
you can be surreptitious! Please identify who is in
each photo and what the event is. Thank you!
Maryanne has received some great pics from
people. Keep ‘em coming!
OUTREACH
Thank you for the MANY wonderful donations of clothing for Camden! There are so many in need and your clothing and shoes make such a difference. They are delivered to St. Wilfrid’s clinic to be distributed each month! If you have anything that you would like to donate, please make sure that items are in good shape. Don’t send anything that you wouldn’t be willing to wear yourself! Please place the items in manageable size bags only – NO BOXES – and leave them on our front porch. We will be happy to see that they get to Camden! They always need men’s shoes more than anything else!
We live at 223 Highland Terrace in Pitman!
Thanks so much! Deacon Carl and Ellie Dunn

Prayers for Parish Families For March
Parker family, Pastiu family, Peel family,
and Pelletier family
OUR PRAY-ERS MINISTRY
Each Sunday during Communion time, our team
of Pray-ers offer prayers with our parishioners.
We have now expanded this meaningful ministry
to our Saturday evening Holy Eucharist at
5:30pm.
After you receive Holy Communion, if you
want/need additional prayers, there will be a team
of Pray-ers in the front of the Church who are
willing to pray with you. These prayers can be
offered in joy for a Blessing you have received,
or can be to help ease a burden which lies on your
heart. Please take advantage of this wonderful
ministry of our parish. All prayers are
confidential.
Anyone interested in being a Pray-er Minister at
the Saturday night or Sunday services please
contact Barbara Elliott @ 589-3980 or
Contemplative Prayer Time Before Our Worship Services
For those who seek a time for quiet prayer on
Saturdays and Sundays, Mother Susan opens the

prayerful time. Likewise, for Sundays, she will be in
the Church at 9 AM for a quiet time from 9 AM to
9:30 AM.
We ask that all who come early to church honor
these times as times for quiet prayer and
contemplation.
HEALING PRAYER

Thank You God for
Your Beautiful Skies
By Alice Aultman
Humans are noted for the decisions we
make. We choose where we live and what
we eat. As much as we would like to
eliminate gray skies and storms we need
them for our earth.
Fortunately after the storms we are gifted
with beautiful blue skies that can prompt
us to think of how there is such a beautiful
color. Let us choose to stop and view the
color and beauty. Sometimes there are
fluffy cumulus clouds under the blue. There
are also stripes, artful waves and spots all
giving a troubled mind peaceful viewing.
All of this beauty just for the looking!
Sunrise and sunset are the times multiple
colors are most often seen. One early
morning I viewed a completely pink world
which only lasted a few minutes but it was
great. Sunsets mingled in the clouds offer
rich shades as the sun goes to bed and is
certainly worth our viewing.
This beautiful part of God’s gifts is available
just for the viewing. Let us take a few
moments and look up!

Shawl/Caring Hands Ministry
Every so often we get a request for a Prayer
Shawl to be given to someone in need.
Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes
during grieving periods after the loss of a
loved one. The Shawls are crocheted or
knitted by the women in this ministry. Every
other Tuesday morning you will find our
Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the
shawls in our Conference room. They are
made with prayer for those who will receive
them.
I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and
comfort these shawls have brought to so
many people. They need not be members of
our parish. Need is spread everywhere.
If you know of a need, just ask Pat
Braidwood.
THURSDAY STUDY GROUP Thursday mornings, 9:30 - 11 a.m.
We continue with our study based on
Bishop Shelby Spong’s book, Why
Christianity Must Change or Die.” We
meet 9:30 – 11 a.m. in the Conference
Room.

CONTEMPLATIVE GROUP
We meet at 10 a.m. in the Conference Room on

Richard Rohr’s The Naked Now. Come and give
our Contemplative Group a try!
Stations of the Cross will be on Friday Nights,
with the schedule as follows: (The meal is optional)
2/28/20 - 7:00 pm Stations in the Church (no meal).

4/10/20 - (Good Friday) 12:00 pm Regular Stations of the Cross (no meal).
We encourage all congregants to attend. Stations are a very important part of Lent, as we walk with Jesus through his Fourteen Stations. We really get a sense of what He went through. It can be very emotional, but this emotion makes Easter seem so much more meaningful!
Lenten Meditations & Pamphlets
On the table at the back of the church you will
find an array of booklets and pamphlets for Lent.
Please help yourself, take home and use these
meditations to strengthen your Lenten devotion
and prayer time.
Please Be Considerate of
Our Neighbors!
We are so glad you're here! But when you
park near the church, please be considerate
of our neighbors and make sure you have
fully cleared their driveways. Thank you!

Easter Flowers
The beauty of Good Shepherd at Easter is
made possible through the participation of many
parishioners. No specific amount is required for
a memorial or thank offering. Please use this
form to indicate your wishes as to how your
memorial/thank offering is to be listed and
return it to the parish office or put it in the
offering plate as soon as possible. We would
like time to prepare the service leaflet. The
absolute deadline for inclusion of the names in
the Easter service leaflet is Monday, April 6,
2020 at 8:30 AM.

FAMILY PROMISE OUTREACH MINISTRY
Family Promise of Southwest New Jersey has been assisting hard working families with housing insecurities since 2005 through partnerships with local houses of worship and support from the local business community. It is the only program of its kind in South Jersey whose focus is on supporting families who have fallen on hard times and lost their housing due to job loss, illness, divorce, or other unforeseen circumstance. Thirty local churches with over 500 volunteers assist staff in providing an evening meal and overnight housing in their churches, transportation, and case service management.
Since 2012 Good Shepherd has served as a support congregation. As a support congregation we are currently assisting the Pitman Road Church of Christ when it is their turn to host families for a week. Our team of dedicated volunteers cook and serve dinner, interact with adults and children during the evening hours, and supervise the site during the night.
In 2019 Family Promise served seventeen families (32 parents and 28 children). All completed the program and moved into their own housing.
To learn how you can join this outreach ministry please contact Sue Dixon at [email protected]. Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers: Barbara Elliott, Jack Daugherty, Connie Parent, Chris Southwick, Gail Morton, Beth and Jeff Snodgrass, Rich Harrington, and Sue Dixon.
College Scholarship Forms
There are a few College Scholarships available through the Church. The forms are in the white envelopes on the bulletin board across from the Conference Room. Please check the Deadline dates and have your paperwork & recommendations needed in on time. Any questions please see Mother Susan+.
