From the Director’s Desk

The average attention span of human beings has gone down and some reports suggest that it’s one second less than a gold fish. The results may have different implications for society but for businesses, speed becomes one of the most important strategies for both growth and survival. Businesses have less time for implementing IT projects, customers are ready to pay a little extra for immediate delivery, managers want results from employees instantly and employees

need faster returns from employers. In today’s environment, speed has become directly proportional to customer satisfaction where customers could be both internal or external. Start-up companies are giving tough competition to corporates in different sectors using frugal approaches, which are implemented with speed. These newcomers are not burdened with legacy and are therefore able to quickly modify their operations to changing customer expectations. Corporates need to learn from some of these start-ups and re-look at their offering to customers. It may require change in the way customers access a company’s products or services, buy these products or services, pay for these products or services and receive post-sales engagement. Considering the above scenario, corporates should invest a part of their earnings towards building business models, which increase customer satisfaction using speed as a key driver. We look forward to engaging with you in the coming months.

CLoUD ConnECt The Shelf talks to Jeetendra Berry, Vice President, PPS and COMP, Middle East, Redington Gulf, on how partners can grow their cloud market share.

could you give us an overview of Redington’s volume business?Redington Volume Distribution is the largest broadline

distributor in the Middle East region in terms of turnover,

number of units sold, channel and product breadth and

depth. The division distributes over 69 product categories

with multiple variants for each category from over 28 global

IT vendors. Redington Volume division transacted with over

1950 plus active partners across Middle East during the

previous year FY 14-15 with almost 24 percent of partners

increasing their transaction value year-over-year.

how does Redington reinforce microsoft’s business in the region? Through our presence in UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and

Bahrain with local sales offices and experienced team, we

are well positioned as Microsoft’s regional distributor for their

cloud service offerings, providing them a leverage of cost

and time to market by maximising channel reach and helping

them build scale.

as a distributor, what is the value addition you are offering for microsoft’s cloud products? In addition to the conventional value adds of credit, financing,

logistics and partner management, we now need to play the

role of a ‘trusted advisor’. We will continue to help channels

to vet the various cloud offerings, provide training and

enablement, marketing, sales and technical support and

guide their choices with scope for consolidated billing. We

need to hand hold and mentor channels to reach out and

secure efficient scalable access to SMB organisations, which

is key to succeed in the cloud environment.

for a partner who is interested to come on board, what are the incentives they can look forward to? We incentivise our partners’ business through Redington

Cloud Club. This promotion is primarily focused on cloud

product offerings such as Office 365, Azure and CRM Online.

It is a well thought out promotion created to entice all the

stakeholders of the business, be it partner distributor,

partner reseller or partner resellers’ sales team. The idea

was to encapsulate all the benefits such as incentives,

rewards, trips, training, and migration services, under one

promotion. This way the promotion offers benefits to all

and can help in influencing decisions.

as a distributor how do you groom your partners to go to the next level? We do this by encouraging our partners to invest in

Microsoft Partner Network and achieve certifications,

which differentiates them in the market and advertise

their specialisations, opening them for new business

opportunities. We will help partners make the right

choices and be a one-stop-source for them to select

their pick from across a suite of diverse vendor cloud

offerings.

how do you see the cloud market shaping out within the middle east over the next couple of months? With declining oil prices and uncertain economy, cloud-

based solution is the answer to customers looking

to upgrade their IT. This world will see 90 percent of

commercial apps and 70 percent of CIOs adopting the

cloud-first strategy by 2016. In this region, the cloud

adoption evolution model may vary, which will be a

hybrid cloud with combination of public and private

cloud, depending on the customer’s workload need for

an efficient environment. Public cloud will be preferred

for standardised workloads such as e-mail, testing,

development, collaboration projects (PaaS), incremental

capacity for peak load times (IaaS), SaaS applications

with well-implemented security strategy. Private cloud

will be preferred where control, security and data privacy

are paramount for business data and applications.

As customers increasingly trust the cloud and as the

services offerings become standardised, there could be

a shift of such services from private to public cloud.

can you give us a brief overview of the tablet and smartphone market in the middle east? The Middle East and Africa tablet market - which

includes 2-in-1 devices - posted flat growth of 0.3

percent year on year in Q2 2015, according to the

latest figures.

A total of 4.05 million units were shipped in

Q2 2015, with tablets growing 0.1 percent year on

year to total 4 million units. The 2-in-1 market grew

17.6 percent over the same period to make up the

remaining 50,000 units. For the first half of the year,

the overall market shrunk 3.2 percent year-on-year,

which compares unfavourably to the 59.6 percent

year-on-year growth recorded in the corresponding

period of 2014.

The tablet market, which is nearing saturation

point in many countries, is being cannibalised by

the emergence of smartphones boasting large

screen sizes. The market share of large-screen

smartphones is increasing and also 2-in-1 devices

have shown positive growth.

The growth of Windows will be spurred by

greater adoption of tablets

and 2-in-1 devices in the

commercial segment.

Businesses will find it easier

to incorporate Windows into

their existing IT infrastructures

iLife

and corporate cultures rather than introduce a new

OS hub just for tablets, thereby enabling them to run

the same OS on both PCs and tablets. We also expect

the share of 2-in-1 devices in this market to grow from

around 1.2 percent currently to 3.3 percent by the

end of 2016. The education sector will be pivotal to

the growth of this form factor. We are seeing a steady

increase in the adoption of 2-in-1 devices in this sector,

primarily as a result of government-driven initiatives.

I-Life is one of the few tablet vendors that

continues to grow in a declining market. Our wide

range of products – including plenty of

low-cost offerings – are proving popular

in a growing number of regions and it is a

brand that performs well in the adjacent

smartphone and 2-in-1 category.

Smartphone shipments are set to

total 155 million units in 2015 after

increasing 66 percent year-on-

year during the first quarter

to reach more than 36

million units.

Smartphones accounted for 63 percent of the

handsets shipped in the Middle East during the

quarter and 47 percent in Africa. This comes at

the expense of feature phones, which suffered

year-on-year declines of around 20 percent in

both regions and will make up just 27 percent of

the overall MEA handset market by the end of

2019.

what are some of the driving factors that have contributed to the growth of this market regionally?Today we are in an era where youth across the

region have not only one smartphone, but a wide

range of mobile devices – including laptops,

tablets, 2-in-1 and increasingly wearable devices

as well such as smart watches, smart glasses, and

even smart clothing.

When the first smartphones were launched

in the mid-to-late 2000s, they were promoted

to manage email, maps, and store music. But

since then, mobile devices and mobile apps have

evolved significantly – tracking our personal

health and fitness, providing a new range of

government services, and serving as the “third

screen” for consuming multimedia and messaging

people.

Mobile device take-up in the region is being

driven by two key factors: strong broadband

network infrastructure, and the rapidly-emerging

Internet of Everything era.

what are some of the opportunities in the region?I-Life sees growth opportunities across the region

for lifestyle products. We are aligning ourselves

with the market demand to offer the best possible

solutions through our new range of products

including 4G smartphones as well as tablets with

Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Intel 2-in-1 devices and a

variety of wearable products.

from i-life’s perspective, what have been some important highlights over the last few months?I-Life Kids Tablet WIFI which was launched

beginning of 2014 has been one of the most

successful products in the Middle East in the

tablet category.

Recently we have launched the advanced

version of Kids Tablet which comes with

3G calling, SOS function, child tracking and

complete parental control.

Also, we have launched the new ZED BOOK

10.1 inch which is an all-in-one device that can be

used as a tablet, notebook and smartphone.

The ZED BOOK comes loaded with Dual

Operating system that supports Android,

Windows and supports 3G Phone calling.

what are some of the competitive advantages of i-life’s products? what are the differentiated features that appeal to the customer?

I-Life is serious about product design, a rarity

in the mobility business. All our products –

including tooling – are designed in-house, from

the ground up. These factors are key in ensuring

that every I-Life product is consistently of the

utmost quality, reasonably priced and unique.

We are known for developing unique lifestyle

products such as Kids Tablet, smartphones, ZED

BOOK, and other smart devices.

how do you plan to expand into the regional market? can you elaborate on some of the initiatives that are planned to help achieve this? I-Life is a well-established brand in the UAE,

GCC, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Iraq and CIS

markets.

In Q4 15 and 2016 we plan to increase our

focus in emerging markets such as Africa, Nepal,

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

what kind of response have you observed for your wearable tech products? are there plans to introduce new product lines? Global wearable technology market was worth

$750 million in 2012 and it is expected to rise by

a compound annual growth rate of 40.8 percent

through to 2018. Additionally, the number of

wearable units shipped annually is forecasted to

increase from 33 million units shipped in 2015 to 148

million units shipped in 2019.

I-Life entered the wearable segment beginning

of 2015 with the launch of ZED Watch and ZED

Band which is compatible with iOS and Android.

These devices can be used as smartphones as

they support SIM cards. We are growing quarter on

quarter on the wearable category and response

from all the key markets in Middle East, Africa and

CIS has been extremely encouraging.

We plan to launch the Kids Watch by end of Q4

15 which has unique functions such as one touch

SOS calling and online child tracking functions.

There are some more lifestyle products planned for

launch in early 2016.

can you elaborate on your channel plans for the next quarter? Our channel program further reinforces our

commitment to an exclusively indirect sales model,

and give our channel partners even more ways

to succeed while delivering superior customer

satisfaction.

Our recently launched channel program called

“LIFE” was expanded to handle a greater number

of qualified resellers, and extended to the online

channel. In regard to the remaining aspects of

the program, every authorised reseller within the

program will still be able to have increased support

and engagement from the I-Life local representative

and product marketing teams.

what are some highlights that we should be on the lookout for from hp during this year’s giteX? In the spring of 2015, HP introduced new printer

devices with JetIntelligence. This is the next

generation of devices and solutions and services

to adapt to the trends in today’s changing office -

more pages, more performance, more protection.

With the fall 2015 releases, HP will continue what it

has started with our spring 2015 introductions.

HP is extending the innovation of original HP toner

cartridges with JetIntelligence to customers who

need monochrome printing with the addition of

precision black toner. Precision black toner offers

precise toner placement for black and white

printing, leading to higher page yields per cartridge.

2-sided printing than its predecessor. The HP

Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477 series offers fast,

dual-sided scanning and support for document

workflows, including scan to email, folder,

USB, and cloud capabilities. It also delivers

fast, best-in-class color printing performance

with up to 150 percent faster 2-sided printing

and 46 percent faster first page out than its

predecessor.

With these devices, HP is continuing its

effort to help customers secure their print

environment, from boot up to shut down, by

bringing built-in security features to the Pro

Series, such as job storage with PIN Printing.

The new printers are ideal for small work teams

with three to 10 users printing up to 4,000

pages a month.

For customers looking to enable mobile

productivity for employees, the new 400-series

printers support several mobile printing

solutions, including wireless direct and NFC

touch-to-print, as well as cloud-based pull

printing with HP JetAdvantage Private Print.

We are also launching new workgroup

devices for five to 15 users, printing up to

7,500 pages per month. The users benefit from

increased performance, protection and print

capacity of new HP Original Toner cartridges

with JetIntelligence. The new models include:

The HP LaserJet Enterprise M506 series for

monochrome printing with a 25 percent smaller

footprint and dual-sided print speeds up to 71

percent faster than its predecessor. The HP

LaserJet Enterprise MFP M527 series, which

models are much faster, smarter and overall

why is security so important when looking to buy a new printer? If you follow the headlines, you’re probably

well aware of the increasing risk and

frequency of security breaches. If you

quantify the numbers, it’s clear that the risks

to an unprotected environment are indeed

significant.

Each customer needs to make sure that

his printers are not an entry point to

his network. To do this, simply protect

your network with devices that protect

themselves.

Let me explain an analogy with PCs.

There are 3 levels of security in the new

devices. If a PC starts up, the first thing it

does is load the BIOS. The BIOS is used

to ensure the hardware basics work. Next

step is loading Windows which is akin to

the printer’s firmware. Here, you want to

make sure the genuine Windows files are

loaded, and no one has made changes to it or

added a virus in it. Third level is that the PC is

actually running and being used. This is when

most people would have an antivirus software

running to prevent any intrusions. This is

comparable with the new HP Run-time Intrusion

Detection of the new Laserjet - constant in-

device monitoring for malicious attacks.

In some cases hackers try to tamper with

the PC before the virus scan software is

active. The deepest level of intrusion would

be to try to hack the BIOS. The new Laserjets

actually come with a technology that you may

know from the HP business laptops. It is called

HP SureStart. When the printer starts, it always

checks if the BIOS is the original. Secondly,

when the printer firmware is loaded, it checks

if it is a known good firmware. This would be

like checking if you use Genuine Windows.

Third level, once the printer is working

regularly, there is constant monitoring for

malicious attacks.

In case any malicious software would be

detected, the printers are self-healing and

can reset themselves to a secure state or

hold until IT can assess the potential security

threat.

HP SureStart, HP Run-time Intrusion

Detection are unique and industry leading

features for HP Enterprise FutureSmart

platforms.

how does the design of these new products sets hp apart? Our new design was first introduced with our

Redington perspective

CHAnnEL PERSPECtivE: BAHRAin, kUwAit, oMAn & QAtARHeading the sales for Redington Gulf, Volume & Telecom Division in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar, Ravishankar H shares his take on the evolving market dynamics in these countries.

countries engaging with over 300 partners.

This is in addition to our warehouses and

service centres.

Our primary focus in these countries has

been the reseller and retail segments. Kuwait

and Qatar have an equal mix between reseller

and retail segments whereas in Oman and

Bahrain the inclination is more towards retail.

We have recently started catering to the

corporate segment with the addition of new

contracts in the PC and Tablet space.

We hope to work closely with our partners in

Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar to meet their

end-to-end requirements.

The past 12 months have experienced a rapid

decline in crude oil prices, which has not been

pleasant news for economies reliant on oil sale.

Overall the four markets (Bahrain, Qatar, Oman

& Bahrain) have shown resilience and have

managed moderate growth thus far. The PC

market size has also maintained itself at around

200k units a quarter and smartphones showing

unit growth quarter-on-quarter.

Redington Gulf has had local presence in

these four countries and continues to remain

positive on the prospects of these economies.

Today, we have in-country teams for Redington-
