A make-up artist has become one of the most respected names in the fashion industry of Dubai speaks of her grit and determination.Today she has three stores and two franchisees in the UAE and South Africa and is already making waves in India with her jalabiayat or kaftans, as they are popularly known.Hailing from a traditional Gujarati household, Beena was brought up with the notion that girls do not need to study –only boys should be educated, Moreover, at the age of 18 she was expected to ‘settle down’ i.e. get married and lead the quiet identity of a housewife. But this gal was not the sort to waste her life making pbulkas. Despite a non-supportive family, she moved to the UAE to seek her fortune.

“When I went to Dubai in 1992, I started out as a make-up artist. From my childhood I’ve been found of colors and often I would suggest the clothes and fabrics to compliment and complete the look,” says Beena of her early tumultuous days. What started off as simple suggestions slowly manifested into serious style advice and hard to miss designs. One day an Arab lady asked her to design a complete collection of jalabiayatand this was the beginning of Beena’sdesigning carrier.Beena is a self-taught designer and has only her experience and instinct guiding her. She believes Good has looked after her at every stage. Though she had an eye for color and fabrics, as a designer it became mandatory for her to know all about cuts and fits.

Though worried about the future, Beena’s formula was to be honest with her clients. It was a big risk as she could also have lost customers who might not have been willing to entertain a novice. But the risk paid off and in the process of ensuring customer satisfaction. Beena not only doled out batches of personalized kaftans but also became a master at her art. This customization brought in more clients as the women were more than happy to have exclusive style statements, “It was like being in a swimming pool when I didn’t know how to swim and had to learn stay afloat. It was a tough job trying to make both ends meet but in the end I made sure my clients got value for their money,” she says.

Beena loves to work with chiffon and raw silk as she feels they bring out the best in her work. Her machine-embroidered and mixed fabric

creations are most sought after among a host of styles and designs.“What matters is to better yourself with every creation…” She says.

10 Interior design trends for 2010

Decorating

19

Ask a group of interior designers to talk about the latest decorating trends and, chances are, they'll wince just a little. Here's the problem: Trends are often considered the pieces you buy one year and throw out the next, when they're no longer gracing the pages of your favorite shelter magazine.

However, not every trend is fleeting. A few years ago, going green was hailed as one of the hottest trends. Now it is becoming a standard throughout the design industry.

1. Texturenatural materials and unusual techniques with a lot of rich, textural interest New products include a woven natural bamboo headboard, a crocheted floor cushion, recycled glass candleholders and storage made of kooboo.

2. Keeping it realNo more fake antlers, please!) In 2010, we want to see a movement toward the natural patina of woods, metals and other materials. We don't even mind a water mark or a hint of rust. After all, those imperfections may be the result of generations of wear and come with a good story or two.

3. Layered flooring overlapping several smaller, lightweight rugs with patterns and colors that are complementary - a striped runner on top of a larger geometric rug - or overlapping multiples of the same rug in a variety of colors. Those with wall-to-wall carpeting can still get in on this trend. Place a rug over existing carpet for an instant splash of color or pattern,.

This is a great trick for avoiding the hassle and expense of ripping out existing carpeting when you want an update.

4. Bolder design decisions In the last year, people were looking to be calmed and comforted by interiors the burgeoning sense of optimism will translate into sparkle, glamour and lots of risk-taking in design. In with color.

5. Old is new again "Antiques and vintage pieces add soul to any space," explained interior designer Jay Jeffers, "and these types of items are negotiable and plentiful in today's markets, so our clients are able to invest in key pieces for their home." From sites like 1stdibs.com to consignment and thrift stores, there are indeed sources out there for any budget.

6. Wallpapered ceilings We've all seen the wallpapered accent wall. In 2010, look for wallpapered ceilings as an increasingly popular option for creating visual impact in a room.

7. trends we'd love to see go essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live." Indeed, personal taste and decor that meets your needs are always in style.

Decorating

8. The well-traveled look

The Sundance Channel series "Man Shops Globe" follows Anthropologie buyer-at-large Keith Johnson as he visits country after country, looking for special pieces and inspiration for the company's 135 stores worldwide. Whether you're scouring the stalls in Paris or browsing shops during a quick weekend getaway, incorporating souvenirs in a space can give it a bit of personality.

9. Palette

Speaking of color, Melanie Coddington is "having a purple moment that will continue into 2010," she noted. "Gray also continues to figure largely as well - in particular purple and gray, yellow and gray, and matte and shiny gray together are great combinations." Fellow interior designer Kimberly Ayres concurred: "Gray is the new beige," she said, adding that she anticipates "rich and unexpected combinations - like gray with teal or magenta or tangerine. It's a very mercurial color."

10. Mix it up

"In general, I see a trend to a carefully edited 'anything goes' approach," said Ayres. "Going forward in 2010, it's all about the mix and how you combine individual, disparate elements. The right classic 19th century piece will mix with certain vintage finds from the '70s and '80s and with pieces designed this year." She added, "Graphic modern print textiles work with traditional chairs and sofas.“

That said, there are some trends we've come across in the past few years that we wish hadn't been so widely adopted.

1 Homes that look like taxidermy shops. Enough with the wall of antlers and animal skins all over the floor!

2 Flat-screen TVs mounted so high above the fireplace mantel, you get a neck cramp before the first commercial break.

3 Home makeover shows that set unrealistic expectations about decorating a space. There are usually scores of people working behind the scenes whom you never see on screen. Plus, we're firm believers that good design takes time.

4 Shallow sink basins that result in water splashing everywhere.

5 Outfitting a room top to bottom with reproduction designer furniture. We've seen too many homes filled with so much Eames, Bertoia and Saarinen they look like soulless showrooms.

6 The phrase "man cave.“

7 Watch any house-hunting program on HGTV and, chances are, granite countertops are on the buyer's wish list. But with so many options now available - including recycled paper and glass products - our wish for 2010 is for anyone embarking on a remodel to think beyond the ubiquitous granite and stainless steel combination.

Submerged FlowersEasy and cheap decorating Ideas for all occasions

A submerged centerpiece is a clear vase with flowers or other items submerged in water. Whether it's for a wedding, a dinner party, a bridal shower or simply for your own kitchen table, a submerged centerpiece is gorgeous! There are so many options on items to submerge and looks to create. The submerged look will save money compared to a traditional, fuller floral arrangement.

Instructions

Putting It Together

1.Step

Place rocks, stones or crystals at the bottom of the vase. The vase can be cylinder, square, rectangle, short, tall and so on.

2.Step

Fill vase about 85% full with water. Submerge flowers or other items. The process will definitely take some time with trial and error. You won't know the likelihood of the items floating to the top until you try submerging them.

3.Step

Place floating candles on top.

Ideas

1.Step

Use produce instead of flowers. If your color scheme involves green, put grapes in one vase, green apples in another, limes in another and so on.

2.Step

For a winter event, use twigs and berries. A single stemmed red rose submerged with clear pebbles at the bottom and a floating candle at the top in a skinny cylinder has dramatic impact.

3.Step

Mix and match several ideas. Use produce in the vase and have floating flowers on top.

Hints

1.Step

If the centerpiece is for a special event, wait until the last minute to submerge any objects. This way the water and its contents will look fresh and clean. Clean all items thoroughly before submerging. Bleach the stones and pebbles.

2.Step

Because of the simplicity of the look, it is probably best to keep the color scheme monochromatic.

3.Step

The best flowers to use are orchids, calla lilies, hydrangeas, tulips and roses. Avoid flowers with pollen because the pollen will cloud the water, you can also use artifitial flowers.

4.Step

To prevent bubbles, use distilled water. If you want to increase the amount of bubbles, add carbonated water to the vase water.

5.Step

Here are a few tips to keep the flowers from floating to the top:

- Use floating candles on the top to keep them down.

- Tie the stems together to increase the weight.

- If the flower is large enough to stick to the side of the vase, it might keep in place.

- Add a few drops of oil to the top.

- Put the stems under stones at the bottom.

- Use clear packing tape at the bottom of the vase.

- Tie fishing line to the stem and place it under stones at the bottom of the vase.

Tissue paper flowersStep 1Take 10 sheets of tissue paper - lay on a flat surface. I used 20" x 30" sheets. Starting at the short end, make a fold at least 1.5 inches wide. Simply fold accordion-style - flip tissue stack over and make another fold. Continue folding until you get to the end of the tissue. Make sure to press firmly creasing with each fold.

Step 2Wrap a pipe cleaner (or florist wire) tightly around the center of your folded tissue.

Step 3Make two cuts at the very end of the stack to make a point or round it -depending on the look you want. Repeat on the other end.

Step 4Gently pull each piece of tissue towards the center of the flower, separate each tissue sheet from the others one at time. Fluff and fiddle with until the desired shape is found. These flowers are approximately 18" in diameter.

Recipe

Ingredients: (made 2 small ramekins of mousse)

8-oz. plain, yogurt (about 1 cup) [Or Greek style yogurt- skip the draining if you are using this]A generous Pinch of Saffron2 tbsp of Rose Petal Honey (Recipe below)[ may be substituted with sugar, or any natural sweetnerslike agave nectar. I have used the honey here to keep the flavor of the rose consistent] – use more or less to tasteAbout 6 Tablespoons of Low Fat Milk1 Tablespoon chopped Organic Rose Petals (I used the roses from our garden ) – Can use more if you wantA little less than 1/2 Teaspoon of Unflavored Gelatin (Or any gelatin substitute like Agar Agar)Vegetable oil to very light grease the ramekinsMore Rose Petals & Slivered Almonds for Garnish(Optional)

For the Honey:

1/2 Cup Honey1/4 Cup Loosely packed Organic Rose Petals of any fragrant rose

Preparation:

To Prepare the Honey:

Wash the rose petals. Dry them lightly .. pat with paper towels.

Lightly fill a jar ( I used a small bowl, since I made in real small amount), & pour the honey over it.

Let it stand for a few days to a couple of weeks. It gets more fragrant with time.

Preparing the Mousse:

Drain yogurt in a paper-towel-lined/or cheese cloth sieve. Press and stir with a large spoon & then leave to drain. Put the bowl in refrigerator.

After 10 -12 hours the liquid will have strained through enough that the yogurt in sieve & the yogurt will be thick and creamy. (even better if drained overnight/24 hrs) – The draining step may be skipped if you are using the thick Greek Style Yogurt.

Transfer to a clean bowl. Whisk it well in the bowl to make it fluffy & airy.

Gently crush the saffron threads between your fingers. Blend it in with the yogurt. Set aside & let it sit for a couple of hours for the flavor of the saffron to be infused. The Yogurt will take on the light yellow color from the saffron.

Sprinkle gelatin over 1 Tablespoon water in a small bowl and let stand 1 minute to soften. Heat the milk in the microwave for about 40 seconds or till almost boiling hot. Stir gelatin until dissolved & there are no lumps.

Mix yogurt, rose petals & honey.

Mix a little yogurt into gelatin and then mix the gelatin into the rest of the yogurt, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Whisk them together well again to blend & fluff.

Line the Ramekins with vegetable oil.

You can line them with a few rose petals if you want. Spoon the yogurt mix in to the ramekins. Cover & put them in a refrigerator and chill until it sets.

To Assemble:

Before serving place a plate over the ramekin, turn it over & tap the ramekin lightly for it to come out.

Drizzle some rose petal honey on the mousse & serve chilled

While there's no denying that looking after your hair and seeing a professional hair colorist will give you nice hair color, matching your hair color to your skin tone is the ultimate way to ensure that your hair color turns out great and that you have a look which will bring out the glow in your skin and the twinkle in your eye.

Beauty tips

Have you ever wondered why some people have hair color that just pops?

41

“Matching your hair color to your skin tone is the ultimate way to ensure that your hair color turns out great.”

Skin Tone Categories

Skin, just like your hair and nails, is made up from a protein known as keratin. Inside the keratin chain, melanin or pigment types in varying amounts determine what color skin we all have. While there are a variety of complexions, all complexions fall into two different skin tone categories - warm or cool.

Warm: Those with a yellow or golden skin undertone have a warm skin tone. When reddish and golden tones combine, the result is a "peaches and cream" complexion. When there are less red tones, the result is a creamy complexion. What this all means is that hair colors that have a warm overtone will generally look natural and much better on you. This color rule also extends to make-up, accessories, and clothing - hence the importance of getting it correct!

Cool: Those with pink or blue skin undertones fall into the cool category. Depending on the pigment mix, many skin overtones are produced. The most common ones include pink blushing cheeks on fair skin (where the skin is very pale/white and almost colorless, it's the blood in the skin that gives the pinkish white complexion) and where red pigments cluster together (causing what we call freckles) giving us ruddy complexions. This all means that hair colors that have a cool overtone will generally look much more natural on you. Again, remember that this color rule also extends to make-up, accessories, and clothing. Mother Nature always gets it right, so we should stick to her rules!

Choosing your skin tone and enhancing your hair color

Beauty tips

How To Choose Your Skin Tone

The quickest way to work out if you're warm or cool is to take a look at the veins in your arms while in natural light. If the color looks green then you are warm, if it's blue you are cool.

For those after a more thorough confirmation you can try wrapping a white article of clothing around your neck after freshly washing your face and looking in a mirror to see if your skin looks yellow (warm) or blue (cool). Holding a white piece of paper up to your face also does the trick, as does seeing if a bronze/orange (warm) or a hot pink (cool) colored piece of clothing looks better up against your skin. The same goes for silver (cool) or gold (warm) jewelry.

How To Use Your Skin Tone To Enhance Your Hair Color

Once you've established your skin tone you can then use it to find a hair color which will suit you and bring out the best in your facial features. To understand the importance of knowing your skin tone and how it will help you to enhance your hair color; you really just have to look at the proof. Below are examples of a warm complexion and a cool complexion and how different they look when teamed with a warm or cool hair color.

Warm Complexion with a Warm Hair ColorBy matching this copper blonde hair color with this warm peaches and cream complexion, we end up with a hair color that looks natural and blends well with the color of the skin.

Warm Complexion with a Cool Hair ColorWhen we switch the warm hair color for this cool violet, we can see straight away that the cool hair color drains the skin tone and leaves our model with a very boring, underrated hair color.

The same results are also obvious with our cool complexion model.

Cool Complexion with a Warm Hair Color

By mixing this cool fair to light complexion with a light titian hair color, we really demonstrate how the wrong tone can make a dramatic difference to the color of the skin (in this case turning it yellow) and proving that the wrong hair color just really does nothing when it comes to enhancing a look.

Cool Complexion with a Cool Hair Color

When we try this cool light hazelnut brown hair color, however, the cool complexion really brightens up and we're left with a hair color that is really suited to our model's skin tone. There are of course some exceptions where combinations of warm and cool hair colors can be used together in various techniques for contrast or specific purposes, but this should be left to the care of highly trained hair colorists only.

The same results are also obvious with our cool complexion model.
