About This Service Today we applied our fall application to your lawn. Cool- season (Fescue) lawns received a balanced fertilizer. This fertilizer will aid the germination of your newly seeded Fescue lawn. Warm-season (Bermuda and Zoysia) grasses received a pre-emergent and a post-emergent herbicide. These prod- ucts will prevent many winter annual weeds and will control most of the broadleaf weeds in your lawn at this time. As the weather gets cold, your Bermuda/Zoysia will be going dormant. Even if your lawn is brown, it will still need our winter application to aid in the control of weeds during the winter and early spring. If you have any questions, please call our office at (770) 536-7611, or visit our website at www.kinggreen.com. We’ll be glad to help in any way. DID YOU RECEIVE A TREE AND SHRUB APPLICATION TODAY? The tree and shrub application today consisted of dormant oil and insecticide. This application utilizes oils to help mini- mize the use of pesticides later in the year. This oil actually smothers insects and their eggs. By using a sticking agent, these oils remain on the plants longer, thereby increasing their length of effectiveness. This helps prevent damaging populations next season. Thank you for using King GREEN. Several years ago a friend of mine woke up to find that her husband had passed away during the night at 35 years of age. The hours and days following his death were dramatic. Immediately there were hosts of people - medical, police, relatives, friends and neighbors - besieging my friend. She was then confronted with writing her husband’s obituary, explaining to her young kids the loss of their daddy, planning a funeral, and even attempting to get the password on their bank account so she could get cash. My friend was not only faced with the prospect of raising a family without a dad, but having to figure out from scratch what it meant to do it financially. She was faced with a mountain of financial details that came up quickly, but the grief of the loss was so overwhelming that there was very little room for logic. What was even tougher for her was that neither of them had prepared in the slightest for this possibility. They had no wills, very little life insurance, and the financial picture down to passwords on bank accounts was only in his head. What you Should Know About large

patch Disease

Support our Scouts!

Large patch is a turfgrass disease that affects all warm-season grasses, including Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede and St. Augustine. Lawns are most susceptible to infection during the transition into and out of dormancy. So, if you see large patch disease in your lawn, it will appear in the fall and spring as circular areas with orange borders, varying from 6" to 20' in diameter.

If you have some damage in the fall, you will need to be aware that it may reoccur in the same places the following spring. Or, it may occur only intermittently during either season. Flair-ups in the spring that are reoccurrences from earlier will appear as sunken patches that are very slow to green up. Fungicides are usually required to stop the disease’s progression and are best utilized preventatively. The ideal scenario would be to have a fungicide applied in October and another in November, following up with another one in the springtime. This series of three applications will generally prevent any major damage from occurring. If you wait until you see signs of lawn patch fungus before calling to schedule a treatment, you may experience a longer recovery time for the damaged areas.

Other ways to help prevent disease are to maintain mowing heights above 1" and to avoid over-watering. Also, make sure that you have proper drainage throughout your lawn, and consider core aeration and dethatching to help reduce the thatch layer where the disease resides most prominently.

to store valuable information that your spouse may need if you leave this earth unexpectedly. Every issue, from custody of the children to managing his business and getting access to their money, was a battle that could have easily been prevented.

This is just one of many tragedies that occur every day where the ongoing impact afterwards could have been made so much simpler if the proper preparations had been made. It is said that part of living a good life is being prepared for its end. That’s the lesson offered by Eugene O’Kelly, former CEO of the accounting firm KPMG. In May 2005, O’Kelly was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Over the last four months of his life, he wrote a book titled, Chasing Daylight: How My Forthcoming Death Transformed My Life. In his book, O’Kelly urges everyone to spend time reflecting on their own mortality: “If how we die is one of the most important decisions we can make, then why do most people abrogate this responsibility? For those considering taking the time someday to plan their final weeks and months, three words of advice: Move it up!” Ironically, if O’Kelly had not been given this gift of knowing he was going to die, he too would have been unprepared. Unfortunately for a lot of people, they are not given this gift of knowing about their death in advance.

So what should one do to prepare and to leave a legacy? Legacy planning is about life and passing on what matters most: your values and life lessons, your final wishes for your prized personal possessions. It is leaving a road map for the family members behind you. The process allows you to document the important details of your life and plan your final weeks, because as you know, death doesn’t always give us fair warning. To that end, here is a brief summary of some of the key items that are a part of a proper legacy plan:

• Wills – especially important for families with children under 18, since you have control over the guardian as opposed to the courts.

• Durable power of attorney to give a trusted family member or friend control of your finances in the event of your incapacity.

• Health care power of attorney.

• Business buy-sell agreements.

These are just a few of the more important documents that should be completed if you have not already done so. It is then important to put these documents, along with all of your financial information, last wishes and any other important papers, in a place that is accessible.

Our firm has put together a great checklist of helpful items that you can prepare and have available. There really is no greater gift you can leave behind than a legacy plan. If you would like a copy of the checklist, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I will be glad to send you a copy.
