The Sewing Machine Buzz By Jeff Vogel New items are being added to our inventory! I want to be known around the area for having a great selection of specialty threads and zippers. Nobody in town carries invisible zippers or rayon embroidery thread. You can’t match thread over the internet, and buying one zipper can cost you $12 by the time you pay shipping. I will be buying display units over the next few months and will entertain suggestions of what you are looking for. BERNINA has been busy, adding a new line of sergers with features like the Free Hand System and needle up/down foot control. Also available is a long arm quilting machine with built in BERNINA Stitch Regulator. For the Baby Lock fans there is a new top-of-the-line serger that threads itself, and a nicely featured sewing machine endorsed by Eleanor Burns called the Aria. Thanks for your support. Hampton Ridge Block of the MonthHi Fashion Sewing Machines has teamed up again with Red Crinoline Quilts. This beautiful Hampton Ridge quilt was designed by Paula Barnes and Mary Ellen Robison of Red Crinoline Quilts. Hampton Ridge features the Hampton Ridge fabric collection also designed by Paula Barnes for Marcus Brothers. The fabric colors and prints create sampler-style blocks that are varied, yet cohesive and the quilt layout shows off the variety of the prints in the Hampton Ridge collection. The light print used to frame the 5-inch blocks is also used for the sashing, giving the blocks a delicate floating effect. Half-square triangles are featured in the individual block borders that bring the forty-one 5-inch blocks to 7 1/2” finished. Half-square triangles also make up the outer quilt border, a special finishing detail that gives the quilt a beautiful, heirloom quality. Your kits will include all the fabrics needed for the quilt top and binding plus patterns. Your finished Hampton Ridge quilt will measure 88” x 88”.

Hampton Ridge will start October 5, 2013 and will be a 12 month long program.

Free instruction classes will be held the first Saturday of each month.

Cost: $29.99 per month

tecH corner By Brian Davis

Needles and Pins…ahThose of you humming the song (did you know Sonny Bono helped write it) can stop now. We’ll talk about sewing needles…and pins.

It is not that unusual to have a customer say (with some pride) “I’ve been using the same needle for 10 years”. Why? Needles get dull pounding through fabric. They are inexpensive.

Brian’s Sewing Rule #2: Change your needle after every project!

Make it a habit. You’ll get better results. Not sure which needle to use? Ask one of our sales people. They’ll match the right needle to your fabric and thread.

Brian’s Sewing Rule #3: Problems? Change your needle!

Thread breaking? Change your needle. Thread bunching up on the fabric? Change your needle. Did you hit something? Change your needle. Things just don’t feel right when you’re sewing. Change your needle. And always follow rule #2.

Did I mention hitting things? This brings us to pins.

I’m always amazed how many pins I find all over the inside of sewing machines. It takes some skill to get them in there! But it would really be better if they stayed out of your machine. Here’s a couple of suggestions:

Use the pins with the large, colorful, flat heads that quilters use. They’re easier to see. They’re easier to grab and remove from the fabric as they travel closer to your machine.

Use a magnetic pin cushion. I like the ones that sit beside your machine, not that stick to your machine. I don’t like sticking things to machines and I want to get the pins away from the action.

Pins and gears, hooks and all the other mechanical actions inside your machine just don’t mix. Pull pins out of your fabric as early as possible and put them off to the side. And those of you who serge… pins cost you money as they dull and nick knife blades which then have to be replaced.

Change your needles. Remove pins early.
