The Seven Stages of Classical Civilization Mixture Gestation Expansion Age of Conflict Universal Empire Decay Invasion civilizations: check. Then choose 3 ancient civilizations: Egypt, Greek, Phoenician. Then begin to gather images of these ancient civilizations that depict each stage. You should have 3-6 images for each stage (i.e. 1-2 for each civilization for each stage). Copy and paste these onto a Word document creating a time line of sorts. Then in a well-formatted paragraph explain the commonalities and difference you see in the pictures. What patterns arise? Finally suggest one more step (at any stage) you think should be included and explain why uses Mixture—Like most organic life, civilizations begin from the “seeds” of two former groups Gestation—This is when the new group gains strengthen Expansion—This is a growth period which happens because the civilization has successfully “stored” enough resources to support the expansion. Age of Conflict—As they have expanded, the culture brings attention to its self as a rival (the teenage years) Universal Empire—This is a civilization's adulthood. It is the time period when it has the most power and influence. Decay—As the empire gets comfortable, it builds its bureaucracy. This, in the end stops, expansion as the "system" becomes more important than new ideas or territories. The culture begins to rest on the success of its past and no longer feels the urgency that young cultures do to improve as it is so far removed from a time when growth was absolutely essential. The end of expansion leads to the focus on nationalism and so stops the vital flow of more resources into the culture. Soon it becomes bloated and must “hoist” off areas it has taken over. Invasion—Showing signs of weakness it is invaded—possibly starting the cycle over again.
