The settlers traveled west and packed their belongings in a covered wagon. The oxen (4 or 6 of them) were very strong, and they were cheaper to buy than horses. Still, the wagon couldn’t be too heavy because it was difficult for the animals to pull, especially up the mountains. It couldn’t be too light either, because the settlers might run out of supplies. There were no or few stores on the trail.
Before the pioneers moved west, they packed up as much food and supplies as the wagon could carry for the 4 to 6 month journey.

Many pioneers left their families and homes. They wanted to bring items from home that were special to them.
On the trail, many people had to throw these items away to lighten the load on the wagons.
Look at your paper with your special items. How would you feel if you had to throw them away?
