• Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve was the man in charge of settling Ville-Marie

• 10 years later, 100 new people live in Ville-Marie

• By 1685, about 600 people live in Montreal

• Jeanne Mance she started the first hospital

• Margarite Bourgoeys She started the first school

• Ville Marie had to start protecting itself

• Fortified walls and buildings were made

• By 1700 Ville Marie was a walled city

New France gets bigger

• After 1663 more French explorers start travelling through North America

• They mostly travelled by canoe

• French explorers made it all the way to the Gulf of Mexico

New France gets bigger• Because of the French

explorers, New France can extend it’s territory.

• By 1700, New France was 3-4 times as big as it was in the early 1600s
