Affirmation of Faith (From “A Declaration of Faith”) God sends the church into the world. God has not taken his people out of the world, but has sent them into the world to worship him there and serve all humankind. We worship God in the world by standing before the Lord in behalf of all people. Our cries for help and our songs of praise are never for ourselves alone. Worship is no retreat from the world; it is part of our mission. We serve humankind by discerning what God is doing in the world and joining him in his work. We risk disagreement and error when we try to say what God is doing here and now. But we find guidance in God's deeds in the past and his promises for the future, as they are witnessed to in Scripture. We affirm that the Lord is at work, especially in events and movements that free people by the gospel and advance justice, compassion, and peace.

Litany of Thanksgiving with Youth Seniors: Thomas Hill, Alex Hutchins, Evan McIntyre, Lauren Nichols, Jim and Mercer Stanfield

Pastor: For all that you have given this community: your time, your talent, your wisdom, and your humor - we thank you.

Seniors: For all that this church has given us: patience, safety, love, and a place to grow - we thank you.

Pastor: For all that you have taught us - we thank you. Seniors: For all that this church has taught us - we thank you. Pastor: We pray that you will continue to grow in the virtues of love, hope,

charity, and faithfulness. We pray that the love of God, the friendship of Christ, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit will flourish in your soul.

Seniors: We pray that this community will continue its commitment to doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God.

Pastor: May you be blessed with doubt inspired by curiosity, rather than distrust. Seniors: May you be blessed with restlessness and righteous anger - may injustice

always move you to action. Congregation: We pray that wherever the future finds you, you will bless

that place as much as you have blessed this one.

Seniors: We pray that wherever we go, we will find the nurture, support, and fellowship that we have found here.

Congregation: We hope that you will never forget that you have a home here at Westminster. Never forget that you have a place where you are known and loved.

Seniors: We hope that you will continue to pray for us - offering us love and encouragement as we continue to grow.

Congregation: May the lessons you have learned in this place strengthen and sustain you. May you work for justice, righteousness, and love in all that you do.

Seniors: May this community never forget its commitment to raising young people with the teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Pastor: And now this blessing: May your spirits awaken to adventure. May you hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk. May you soon be at home in a new rhythm. Go with God! The world is waiting for you. In the name of God, the Creator, the Christ, and the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Today’s Gospel Reading: Matthew 9: 35-10: 23

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’

Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over un-clean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax-collector; James son of Al-phaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, “The king-dom of heaven has come near.” Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tu-nics, or sandals, or a staff; for labourers deserve their food. Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. As you enter the house, greet it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not wel-come you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgement than for that town.

‘See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; and you will be dragged before gover-nors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against par-ents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

JUNE 14 WEEKLY UPDATE & ANNOUNCEMENTS Opportunities to learn, worship, serve, and stay connected

AFTER WORSHIP TODAY: WPC Virtual Courtyard Remember when we all attended church in person? One of the great things about being at church aside from our worship time is the gathering of our church family in the Courtyard after the service. We’re bringing back that experience with the WPC Virtual Courtyard. Please join us via Zoom immediately following today’s worship service. The link to the meeting will be shared in the livechat during the worship service. Hope to see you there! Contact: Bob Lamont ([email protected])

Conversations Around the 21-Day Race Equity Challenge The kind of learning many of us are doing through the 21-Day Race Equity Challenge must be followed by both conversation in community and real antiracist action in our world. We’d like to invite you to be a part of the first thing, as we move together towards the second. Chris and Marietta will be facilitating conversations via Zoom.

Tonight, June 14, 7:00-8:00pm (Chris leads) Sunday, June 21, 7:00pm (Chris leads)

Please respond to Chris ([email protected]) and indicate the days/times you’re interested in, and a Zoom link will be sent to you. We are hope to offer conversation times on June 28 also and will soon publicize those options. Thanks for your grace as we pull this together on the fly in a busy time. This is key work the church must be involved in, and we hope you will be a part of it.

Opportunities to Be a Blessing TREE Callers Needed Our WPC TREE could use a few more callers. Do you have two or three hours each month to devote to checking in on a list of 10 Westminster households? This is a wonderful way to serve your church family during these challenging times. Volunteers must know how to send emails and texts. Please let us know if you can help. Contact: Cherrie Barton Henry ([email protected])

COVID-19 Relief Fund Westminster has created this fund for those wishing to donate some or all of their COVID-19 stimulus check money to those in the community with greater needs. Our COVID-19 committee will direct funds collected to the most needy of our Durham nonprofits. This isn’t a campaign or drive on Westminster’s part, but a response to those who have asked for a vehicle to put the funds they’ve received to good purposes. Contributions have topped $8,200 thus far – thank you! If you’d like to donate, please mail a check to the church (put "COVID19 Relief Fund” in the memo line), or visit https://www.wpcdurham.org/give/ to give online (choose COVID19 Relief Fund from the list of funds).

Serve with Iglesia Presbiteriana Emanuel Volunteers are needed every Wednesday afternoon to help with Iglesia’s food distribution to neighbors in need. Any volunteers age 14 and up can help direct traffic, count vehicles, and do “contactless” loading of groceries into car trunks. You can also help from home by bagging rice and beans for the weekly food distribution. Details and sign-up: https://bit.ly/HelpIglesia.

Other WPC News Update Your myWPC Info As our Tree callers have been reaching out, we’ve learned the church doesn’t have updated contact info for many of you. Also, if you’re giving to the church through your myWPC account, the address we have in myWPC must match the address of your credit card billing statement for your donation to go through. Please take a moment to review and update your information in myWPC. It would be especially helpful if you’d update your photo! Go to www.wpcdurham.org/mywpc/how-tos for instructions to update your profile, give online, and more. Contact: Barb Schmidt ([email protected]).

Beware of Email Scammers! Scammers are out in full force during the pandemic. Please know that Westminster staff will NEVER email you requesting money, gift cards, or personal information such as your social security number or bank account information.

Phishing is an attempt to obtain sensitive personal information by sending legitimate-looking email under the guise of a trustworthy person. The sender’s address will look similar to that of someone you know. Often the messages will imply a sense of urgency. To educate yourself on phishing, how to recognize, and handle it, visit www.phishing.org.

Read advice from the FBI’s financial crimes division to learn more about the scams out there and how you can protect yourself.

If you receive a suspicious email that appears to be from someone at Westminster, do not reply to it. Instead, mark it as spam and report the address to your email provider, then delete it. If you have any questions, please contact Sharon Morgan, who oversees the church’s technology services.

Deepening Our Understanding of Race and Equity Listen, Respond, Learn, Act, Pray

The majority of us at Westminster have never had to bear the weight of racism personally, so it is incumbent upon us to listen to voices long silenced. We are called to educate ourselves. We are called to respond to injustice and stand up for our brothers and sisters of color. We are called to pray that God will abolish this sickness from our country and from our hearts. We have work to do, and it is holy work. Here are a few resources recommended by our staff:

Remembering Recent Victims of Racial Violence, a statement from PC(USA)’s Stated Clerk, the Rev. J. Herbert Nelson

If You Can’t Breathe, Neither Can I, article in The Presbyterian Outlook by the Rev. Jimmie Hawkins, Director of the PC(USA)'s Office of Public Witness in Washington, DC and former pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Durham

Nominations for Elders and Deacons

The Nominating Committee is working to identify five new elders (four adults, one youth) and eight new

deacons (seven adults, one youth). We are also searching for an individual to complete the one-year term of an elder who moved out-of-state. This is an

opportunity to serve in meaningful ways and be a part of God's vision for Westminster. Please send

nominations to [email protected].

Carol Walker and Betsy Mangum have been bagging beans and rice at home.

PLEASE NOTE: Despite the lifting of some restrictions by Governor Cooper, Westminster’s campus remains closed through June 28.

Only essential personnel are permitted on campus during this time. Thanks for your understanding.
