THE SERVICE OF WORSHIP FOR VETERANS’ DAY AND STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY

November 12, 2017 10:30 a.m.

* All who are able may stand Congregation reads aloud the bold print

THE TIME OF CENTERING We use this time to make the transition between “getting here” and “being here.”

Take these few minutes of quiet time to get in touch with the calm places, the still,

deep places in you; the spirit. Relax your body; quiet the inner dialogue of your mind.

Focus on feeling, on being. Be receptive to your center – your reservoir of inner peace,

strength, love. Be aware of being with others. Feel the spirit of the community.

THE COMMUNITY OF FAITH GATHERS

PRELUDE Piano Sonata in D Major, Hob. XVI:37 (I. Allegro con brio) F. J. Haydn

Hiroko Yamazaki, piano

WELCOME Rev. Elizabeth Lyman

MINUTE FOR MISSION Pledging Ginnie Mayforth

SILENCE AS THE LIGHT OF CHRIST ENTERS

*CALL TO WORSHIP

All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above, so thank our God

For joy in living

And patience in trouble;

For rainbows after clouds

And moonlight on the darkest night;

For wisdom to walk the right path

And peace to calm anxious worry;

For birthday surprises

And things in all sizes

All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above,

So let your song arise and give thanks for all God’s love.

*HYMN NO. 331 God of the Ages, Whose Almighty Hand

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of great giving, we confess that we hoard our gifts. You give us talents of

speaking and teaching, and we pretend we can’t use them. You give us gifts of

working with our hands and minds, and we often use those gifts for our own gain

and self-satisfaction, forgetting the needs of others. You give us wisdom and

knowledge, and we hide what we know, for fear of being laughed at or ignored.

Open our hearts, great God, so that we can be part of our love for the world, sharing

what we have. Amen (Time of silent personal confession)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

God promises us that in the midst of our brokenness and our failures, there are signs

of wholeness, hope, and resurrection. The stories we share with one another in faith

tell of God’s work in us –

Changing despair and depression into awareness, breaking down the walls that

divide, healing wounds of the spirit, creating the power to live in new ways, and the

joy to live fully.

In gratitude for this great love, let us stand and sing praise.

*RESPONSE (all sing) Because You Live, O Christ NO. 249, v. 1

Because you live, O Christ, the garden of the world has come to flower;

The darkness of the tomb is flooded with your resurrection power.

The stone has rolled away and death cannot imprison!

O sing we all this day, for Jesus Christ has risen, has risen, has risen, has risen!

*GREETING OF PEACE Since God has made peace with us, let us make peace with each other.

The peace of Christ be with you all.

And also with you. (We greet each other: “The peace of Christ be with you.”)

expresses our gratitude to all living veterans

Over the past few months, we have been reminded that “it takes a village” to keep the church

running. As we move forward with the leadership of Interim Pastor Elizabeth Lyman, let’s

continue with a positive mindset of faith, hope, and optimism by generously supporting God’s

mission through our annual financial pledges, gifts of time and talent, and by considering a

bequest in our planned giving. The Finance & Stewardship Committee invites you to celebrate the

future and Concord’s 65 years of ministry together on
