Another year has raced by in record time…andit’s the month of Christmas already! Hopefullyyou’ve all at least started your Christmas shop-ping, if not you’d better not waste much moretime as the days are running out fast!
I’ll be spending Christmas in Montana, in ahouse that overlooks a beautiful lake. We’vedecided to move out of the house where we livein Ketchum, Idaho, and go on to pastures new.We liked living here in Ketchum, but to be quitehonest, it’s a little on the chilly side for me, hav-ing dwelled in Spain for 10 years. And so for thenext 6 months we’ll be living between places…first Montana, then onto Ojai, California for astint, before returning to Europe for 3 months totie up some more loose ends. Finally, we’ll headback to the USA and then hopefully settlesomewhere, such as Ojai, or some other loca-tion with a warm climate. These are our plansanyway, but as someone very clever once said,“All planning is a defense against God.” And sowe’ll see what unfolds in the meantime, and beopen to wherever we’re led, as our exciting ad-venture continues…

Breaking Bad - Toys R Us have responded tocalls from Florida mothers and has removed itsfour collectable Breaking Bad dolls from itsshops’ shelves and website. The dolls arebased on the series about Walter White, a highschool chemistry teacher who turns into a crys-tal meth dealer, and his sidekick JessePinkman. The figures have a detachable bagof cash and a bag of methamphetamines."Let's just say, the action figures have taken anindefinite sabbatical," Toys R Us said in a state-ment. The retailer had maintained that the fig-ures were sold in limited quantities in theadult-action-figure area of its stores. However,a petition launched on change.org said thedolls are a "dangerous deviation from their fam-ily-friendly values"."While the show may be compelling viewing foradults, its violent content and celebration of thedrug trade make this collection unsuitable to besold alongside Barbie dolls and Disney charac-ters," a mother wrote. No, it's not Neigh-bours after the watershed, it was real life dramain the suburban sunshine, as the mad marsu-pials began their own brutal boxing match.Luckily, one quick-thinking neighbour watchingthe fight unfold from a safe distance, managedto capture the battle on his mobile phone.

Recipe Of The Month Courgette and Cheese Pilaf
This is a vegetarian dish with sweet andsavoury flavours. A Pilaf can be made with Bul-gar wheat or rice so use whichever you prefer,but adjust the cooking times accordingly.
ingredients 4 tbsp oil1 onion, peeled and chopped2 cloves garlic, crushed1 red chilli deseeded and chopped2 medium courgettes diced225g/8oz Bulgar wheat300ml/ ½ pt vegetable stock50g/2oz sultanas25g.1oz pine nuts, toastedsalt and freshly ground black pepper125g/4oz-mozzarella cheese finely diced1 tbsp chopped fresh mint
Method:1. Heat 2 tbsp of the oil on a saucepan, add theonion garlic and chilli and fry for 2 minutes. Addthe courgettes and cook for a further 2 minutesor until golden. Remove from the pan and setaside.2. Add the remaining 2 tbsp oil to the pan thenadd the bulgar wheat, cook over a low heat forabout 30 seconds until the grains are glossy.Add the stock and sultanas, bring to the boilcover and simmer for 5-10 minutes until the Bul-gar wheat or rice has softened and the liquidhas been absorbed.3. Return the courgette and onion mixture to thepan and cook for a further 3 minutes untilheated through. Remove from the heat, add thepine nuts and seasoning with the cheese, coverand leave to stand for 5 minutes until thecheese has melted. Stir in the mint before serv-ing.

The object of this is to get a deeper knowledge of a culture thatlasted six centuries and which was the origen of nearly all the white villages in Axarquia.

The August fair takes place in the middle of the month. It is Cutar's most popular cele-bration. On the Eve of the feria rockets are sent up to announce the start of the celebra-tions. After a mass in honour of San Roque, the Patron Saint of the town and the Virgenof the Angels, a procession goes around the streets. The following day everybody looksforward to the big paella. Fireworks (at 5.00 am) announce that all the fun has finished.
Before, on the nearest Saturday to the 15th May they celebrate the Romeria of SanRoque and for San Juan they light candles all over the village.
In October Cutar is transformed into past times when it was still an Andalusian city, tocelebrate the fiesta of Monfi. For 2 days the town is transformed and in the streets youcan enjoy products from the Andalusian market, Arab music, workshops, Acts, Falconryexhibitions etc. One of the biggest attractions is the gastronomy where you can try sim-ilar dishes to those of the X1V and XV centuries, when the food had Arab flavours andperfumes. People participate in the celebrations by dressing up in Andalusian costumesand doing dances that were popular at the time. This way the festival reminds peoplehow the Moors resisted being expelled from the land they had inhabited for 8 centuries,which they had named Monfies.

Thibaut, wife and family moved to Malaga cityfrom France a number of years ago and as amarketing consultant, Thibaut has been able towork on a freelance basis from the comfort ofhis own home. Anxious to get out of the city atthe weekends, and after visiting a few of thevillages around Axarquía, the family fell in lovewith the picturesque village of Canillas deAceituno, nestling on the lower slopes of thegreat Maroma mountain. It was this that in-spired them to buy a ruined village house on aquiet pedestrian street near the village centre.This was the real Andalusia that Thibaut andMarie had been searching for!The house was in a semi ruinous state andwith the help of excellent builders from the vil-lage, they were able to create a modern, com-fortable and yet romantic little hideaway in thisidyllic village. When it was complete, it offereda wonderful place to spend the weekends. Dur-ing the long, hot summers, the village pool wasa great place to cool off and make plenty offriends. And in the winter, all the many shopsand restaurants remain open, and the atmos-phere and local community alive and vibrant!

Sandra Hill was in Nerja recently, on a visitfrom England, and was invited by a friendto see a performance of the Poetry of War,performed at the local theatre by the NerjaPlayers to commemorate the one hun-dredth anniversary of the First World War
The show, performed to wide acclaim, was forone night only, and all profits will be donated tothe Nerja Branch of the Royal British Legion.
