Here we are
again, back
for another
fun-filled
session.
I hope you
all had a wonderful
Summer despite the rather
unsummery weather. I
certainly enjoyed many
days of uninterrupted
sleep! Don’t forget to
come to church at 11am!
As usual our flower convener, Mora Kerr, is looking for volunteers to help to
decorate the church on Friday and Saturday 18th and 19th and then on Monday
21st to dismantle and distribute the gifts. If you can help on any or all of these
occasions please phone her on 638 2541. Gifts of flowers, plants and produce will
be welcome and should be delivered on the Friday.
From Sunday 6th
September the morning
service reverts back to
an 11 o’clock start.
Enjoy that extra hour!
The monthly Contemporary Evening Services will resume on the 13th
September at the earlier time of 6.30pm. As always, all are cordially
invited to these uplifting and thought-provoking musical services.
The Palace Hotel (left) has been chosen as the venue for the 2016 church trip for three nights, Sunday 17th to Wednesday 20th April. Visits are planned to Dornoch Cathedral, Loch Ness/Urquhart Castle, Culloden/Fort George and a trip on the Strathspey steam railway on the way home. Contact Elaine or Brian to reserve a place with a deposit of £70 per person.
The Palace Hotel & Spa is located in a lovely spot on the banks of the River Ness opposite Inverness Castle and just a few short steps from Inverness city centre. The Palace Hotel & Spa has been
updated, offering new stylish bedrooms including superior and river view rooms. A superb leisure club was added with a gym, 50ft swimming pool, sauna, steam room and Sleeping Beauty Spa.
FREE! Wifi available FREE! On site parking Leisure facilities including swimming pool

Church office or emailed to [email protected] by 13th September.
A biblical joke.
How do we know that Moses wore a wig?
Sometimes he was seen with Aaron and
sometimes he wasn’t. Sorry!
The ‘Giffnock South’s Favourite Soups’
recipe book is still available at £2.50 in
aid of the roof fund and if you haven’t
yet secured your copy it can be obtained
from Myra Rao, Alistair Park or from the table outside the
Winton Hall (payment by honesty box).
Y’know he keeps leaving me. It’s a downright disgrace. This time he flew off to Africa. To a place
called Malawi where, I was glad to hear, he had to cope with 500 or so children. Serves him right.
Seems they held a Summer School for these kids and put on various activities—music and singing,
arts and crafts, drama and storytelling, sports (football and hockey) and most importantly of all—
breakfast—because, for many of these children it would be the only meal they got that day. I get
two –lucky me! He told me it was a wonderful experience, but I only didn’t feel abandoned because a
nice kind lady came every day to administer TLC. She can come as often as she likes. Boris
GIFFNOCK SOUTH NEWS
On the 19th September she
plans to swim the 1.3 mile
stretch from Holy Isle to
Lamlash in aid of the Giffnock
South Roof Fund. The swim starts from Holy Isle at
11am and she reckons to arrive at Lamlash (at the
earliest} by 12 noon, provided the currents are
favourable!
Donations to support Elaine and the roof fund can
be handed to Jan in the office or to Elaine. More
details in the Sunday Order of Service.
If you want to be there, there’s a ferry at 8.30am or
10.40am, and a return ferry at 7.20pm to help carry
Elaine home! £30 for a car and £7.50 return for
each adult.

Hello Everyone
I am writing from Liverpool this month as I am down here staying with a friend. Everywhere we've gone this summer we have taken the rain with us but today is lovely.
The area round Pollokshaws is changing slowly...only one more high rise flat to come down but this one is scarily near the church!!
Our wee garden looks more inviting now with fixed benches and tables and on the other side, weeds and tree stumps have been replaced by paving.
Inside, volunteers gave begun redecorating.
This month is the last month we will have Bill with us. We have all enjoyed his cheerful personality and his ever-improving services. I'm sure he has benefitted tremendously from Roy’s help and Roy in turn from assisting on Sundays and help with parish visiting. Bill is taking on the role of unpaid minister eventually. We wish him well wherever he goes.
Sorry to have so little to write this month but with being away, I've not kept up with church affairs. All the best for the autumn season. Frances Macarthur
Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee before and after
the service every Sunday
TEXT OF
THE
MONTH
What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you-guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. 2 Timothy 1-13
Francis MacArthur writes from Pollokshaws
As our minister, Rev Catherine Beattie, is on holiday until the end of August there is no Minister’s Letter this month. We wish her a restful and enjoyable break.
We thought you would like an update on the work that is taking place in the church and halls and we’ve persuaded our fabric convener, Willie Dunbar, to oblige.
No Minister’s Letter
Those of you who were at church on Sunday 26th July could be forgiven for thinking that repair works to the sanctuary had commenced. The presence of scaffolding was to provide access to the underside of the roof to investigate the extent of the effect of dampness. The result of the survey will form part of the specification for the contract which is being prepared by our conservation architect and for which we are receiving financial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland. The programme is on schedule for tender documents to be prepared by November, with work to commence in the Spring .
Much has happened at Giffnock South and the excellent news is that the insulation of the roof of the Winton Hall, the replacement of windows to both the gable wall and the clerestory window with double glazed units, the replacement of the old inefficient fluorescent light tubes with modern low energy LED fittings and the installation of ventilation in the roof, have all gone like a dream. To help us to achieve this we have received generous financial support from Viridor-Credits, the Environmental Waste Management Company, and we look forward to savings in our heating bills.
Of course, there have had to be problems somewhere and, during the investigative survey by the timber specialist, wet rot has been encountered in the bearing pads to three of the rafters of the roof structure in the Eglinton Hall and also in the ends of timber purlins where they bear on the stonework of the external wall to the original church building. Repairs to the timbers are progressing, but this has delayed the installation of the insulation. The secondary glazing to the windows and the replacement of the fluorescent tube lighting with modern LED fittings have gone ahead but it is probable that the Eglinton Hall will not be available until the end of September at the earliest. The use of the halls, lounge and rooms is being looked at to accommodate all the normal activities and the assistance and understanding of all is asked over the next two months. WD

PROGRESS REPORT
Catherine, our Minister, Rev Jeanne Roddick of Greenbank Church and George
Watson of Queens Park Football Club organised a visit to Ekwendeni from 22nd
July returning on the 3rd of August with eleven others, including our own
Helen Vipond, Jilly Bell and Alistair Park. They ran a holiday club for children
and an all-age festival, with information sessions and activities for adults in the
church and its hall at Ekwendeni in Northern Malawi. See pictures on page 2.
In September we will welcome two visitors from Ekwendeni, Jack Longwe, the Session Clerk and
Songelwayo Banda, their Kwenderana chairman.
Please note that our title is ‘The Church of Scotland Guild’ not ‘The Woman’s Guild’ which came to an end in 1997. Men are very
welcome to come and enjoy the varied programme.
This year is very special as it is our Centenary but you don’t need to be a hundred years old to join! However more members are needed and we warmly invite folks in Giffnock South to join us in this very special year.
More details will be included in the October ‘Sentinel’ but here are some advance dates: we start on Wednesday 7th October at 2pm when Rev Catherine Beattie will get us off to a good start as usual.
On Sunday 1st November the morning service will celebrate our Guild centenary and on Wednesday 4th November we will have a special lunch with entertainment. Please– members of Giffnock South– the Guild needs you– so let’s see lots of new faces!
PS Two more advance dates for everyone in Giffnock South and friends:
Sunday 29th November at 7pm: A superb film show in aid of the roof fund.
Wednesday February 24th at 2pm: A Bridge Drive for the Roof Fund and Guild charities.
Page 4
And here’s another Biblical joke—and there’re not many
of these!
What kind of man was Boaz before he got married? Ruthless!
The lunchtime service is every Wednesday at 11.30am. Since there is no ‘Lunchbite’, tea and coffee will be provided afterwards. Please bring your sandwiches if you wish.
We are planning our official Community Garden Opening and Fun Day on Saturday 5
th
September from noon till 4pm.
Our new M.P, Kirsten Oswald, has agreed to officially open the garden for us.
There will be lots of activities that require helpers and supporters, so please keep that date free.
Our annual Giffnock South Gents’ Golf Competition was played at Whitecraigs Golf Club amid glorious weather on Sunday 14th June. The course was in superb condition and despite wide variations in the quality of play (no names and positively no corresponding scores!!) everyone had a most enjoyable afternoon. Further evidence of this can be seen from the photograph of the happy group which, I should emphasise, was taken after we had all completed our round! (See back page)
The proceedings were rounded off with a lovely meal and drinks in the clubhouse afterwards. The coveted Giffnock South Gents Golf Cup was presented to the winner Iain Grimmond (For the third year running). Congratulations Iain.

have been enjoyed by the residents since 2002.
The new session starts on Tuesday 22nd September at
6.30pm and will, of course, be a Harvest Thanksgiving. The
service lasts only 30 minutes and includes four favourite
hymns led by members of our choir. The choir also provides
a solo, duet, trio, or quartet on the theme of the evening.
We also have Bible readings, a poem, a prayer and a brief
‘thought of the evening’. Members of Giffnock South are
always very welcome to join the good folk of Eastwood Court
in our informal act of worship.
Gents’ Golf Tournament
Inter-Church Bowls Competition
The annual inter-church bowling competition was played at Giffnock Bowling Green on 25th July when teams from Greenbank, Netherlee, Orchardhill, URC and Giffnock South took part. One of our teams, comprising Margaret and Graeme Whyte, Alex Crichton and Ronnie
Macintosh was successful in winning the trophy and prize money of £70, which was donated to Fiona’s Eye Fund.
The Art Club plans to resume its weekly two hour sessions on Monday 7th September from 2 till 4 pm. There are vacancies for new members (who need not be Church members) regardless of their ability and they are welcome to come along (with their materials). For any further information kindly phone Jim N Scott on 639 3306.
