I’ll just call them the “Smilin Five”. Through the generosity of many Sandpiper residents and many others, Sharon raised $3,000 for the cause. Remarkably, the entire event raised over 6.8 MILLION. When all was said and done, Sharon announced her retire- ment from the walking phase, but volunteering for future events seems likely The Smilin’ Five kicked off the walk with a fabulous carbo loading party at one of the ladies homes in Reston, Virginia. There I learned that these ladies don’t just show up and walk. Outfits, (including pink monkeys, pink ponchos, and white hats with pink pony tails) had been carefully coordinated over the sev- eral months leading up to the event. Gifts were exchanged ranging from pink dangling earrings to bags of Epsom salts and lavender (a bath thing I was told). Next morning, bright and early, they were on their way leaving from West Potomac Park near the Jefferson Memorial and arriving many, many hours later near Bethesda Maryland. Sharon reported great walking weather that day, even if she had forgotten exactly how long the al- most 27 miles really was. She also praised the route, through some of Washington’s nicest and most sce- nic neighborhoods. She was also excited to have met up with one of our neighbors, Rita McLean who worked the walk as a volunteer. Being veterans, the ladies skipped the overnight tent city por- tion of the walk and took up resi- dence at a Bethesda Maryland Doubletree Inn. Besides, they don’t serve Cosmos at tent cities! This of course, was after devouring what they all described as the most memorable spaghetti and meatball dinner they will ever eat (guess you had to be there). The next day, after Sharon determined that she could get out of bed and her legs would actually move, they were off on day two, a mere thirteen miles or so. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. I can attest as I was playing golf with 3 of their spouses when in a matter of about 15 minutes, the rain got heavy and the temperature dropped to somewhere in mid 40’s, but then, the ladies did have ponchos! Because of the weather, I was able to find a spot at the fin- ish line when I ran into Mikey, as in our own Mary Ard and Mikey. Soon enough and sure enough, I saw the Smilin Five round the cor- ner and after a little organizing and perking up, they triumphantly and happily crossed the finish line. Frankly, other than a little soaked, they looked great! Sharon said, yes the weather made the walk a little rough, but the worst was on Memorial Bridge, when in sight of the finish area, they got drenched when a car went through a pud- dle. At least they were close! From there, Sharon and I headed back to the Mahoneys where we were staying. After a hot shower , a chilled glass of chardonnay, and a wonderful meal ,Sharon said she felt almost human, at least for the 20 or 30 minutes more that she was awake. If you know Sharon, when it’s sleepy time, it’s sleepy time NOW! I am proud of her and indeed she is proud of herself for completing the walk, but more importantly for her contribution to a much greater cause. The Smilin’ Five kicked off the walk with a fabulous carbo loading party at one of the ladies homes in Reston, Virginia. There I learned that these ladies don’t just show up and walk. Around the world in

107 days By Clint Rose

WWWW ell after 107 days and 40,000

miles we have returned to our

home in Sandpiper. There

have been numerous questions, like “how

can you be on a ship for that long?” Look at

it this way, where else can you have your

breakfast in bed or on your veranda and

then go out of your room and have someone

come in and clean up for you and make your

bed? Where can you go and have someone

cook all your meals and have 4 star dinners

every night followed up with a show at a

Royal Theater and then dancing in a Grand

Ballroom?

During the day you walk out of your

room with the choices of attending very in-

teresting lectures by noted writers, take

dance lessons, go to a movie, visit the

planetarium or just sit by a pool reading a

book. To tell you the truth it was just

“Fantastic”.

With all of that being said you still get

the chance to visit 31 different ports in 28

different countries, sail all the oceans and

too many rivers or seas to mention. Yes, we

did sail right through pirate territory 5 days

prior to the take over of the American

freighter but there was a destroyer and heli-

copter with us when we went through. You are not

only vacationing but are learning the many cultures

of the world making it quite an educational experi-

ence.

What a wonderful way to see such places like

Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, New

Guinea, Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam Thai-

land, India, Dubai, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Greece,

Italy & Spain. In those travels we got to ride an ele-

phant, climb up on a camel, see the pyramids/

sphinx, visit the numerous temples, cathedrals

whose beauty are unbelievable. There are many

words to describe these many places so I will start a

series of articles on this trip of a lifetime in future arti-

cles.

Many people say, “I would like to see the pic-

tures!” Well we have about 3500 still pictures and 12

hours of video, you would have to spend a week to

see them all. I kept a daily log which totaled 13 chap-

ters which I am completing and would be willing to

lend out if someone has an interest. The next article

will be our first leg from New York to Los Angeles.

Our ports were, Ft. Lauderdale, Willemstad, Cura-

cao, Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, Puerto Vallarta

Mexico and Cabo San Lucas Mexico.

DDDD oug and Diane Rauch visited their good friends and part time neighbors, Sam and Diane Car-riker at their Concord, NC home in May. In addition to golfing at the Carriker's favorite golf

club, The Warrior, they were treated to rides on several "toys" of Sam and Diane's. Sam restored his father's old International tractor over the winter, and doesn't Doug seem right at home in the driver's seat ?

TTTT he Carriker's big surprise was a brand new Stallion Trike by Thoroughbred Motorsports. There are cur-

rently only two Stallion trikes in the State of North Carolina, and the Carriker's own one. Readers may recall that Sam and Diane were featured in a Sentinel article last summer when they rode their Honda Gold Wing triked motorcycle out West and back, over 6,000 miles. Besides looking very futuristic, the Stallion features a steering wheel, automatic transmission, Ford 2.3 Liter 4-cylinder engine, heat and air conditioning vents for both driver and pas-

senger, cruise control and drink holders. If you want to find out more about this awesome machine, Google it or wait for Sam and Diane to ride into Sandpiper on it soon. It's cool!

D avid Michaelis has recently

written an astute and poignant

biography of the famous car-

toonist Charles Schulz called

Schulz and Peanuts. It is an

intriguing exploration into the life of a person

who, through his long-running cartoon strip,

was considered successful and well-loved

across our society. And yet, at the same time,

it shows the very human side of Schulz his

personal struggles and family tensions espe-

cially as these are reflected in his cartoon

strips. Early in his life, Schulz saw the Orson

Welles movie Citizen Kane, and it became his

favorite movie. He saw it over the years as

many as forty times. In Citizen Kane, Charles Kane is taken from his poor boyhood home,

raised by a banker and thrust into the center

of American life. He rises to prominence,

achieving economic success and societal

fame, only to lose himself in his never-finished

castle home, Xanadu. In the end, Charles

Kane longs for rosebud, the sled of his joyful

boyhood which represented the love he once

knew. Charles Schulz saw in Charles Kane

something of his own life and struggle. Micha-

elis writes: Like Welles’s hero, Charles Fos-

ter Kane, who got everything he wanted, and

then lost it, Charles Monroe Schulz would

succeed on a scale beyond the grandest of

his childhood dreams, and yet he would strug-

gle to love and be loved. All his life, he felt

alone, spending most of his adult half-century

yearning to be taken care of, to be under-

stood.

This struggle and disappointment around

love would be reflected in the cartoon charac-

ters who inhabited both his daily strip and his

later TV shows. There was often in the actions of

his characters a kind of indifference to one an-

other, sometimes bordering on cruelty, an indif-

ference which all too often reflected and reflects

the pace of our modern world as people rush on

oblivious to one another. Charlie Brown pleads

to know the meaning of Christmas, but his sister

is too busy writing a gift request letter to Santa to

really hear him. Lucy has a crush on Schroeder,

but he is too involved with his piano to see or

care. And of course, Charlie Brown always falls

victim to the sly invitation from Lucy to kick the

football which she will hold for him, only to go fly-

ing through the air when she once again moves

the ball at the last second. I suspect that the un-

derlying tone of Peanuts was so popular for so

long because it reflected the subtle feelings of so

many around the struggles and disappointments

and yet the perennial optimism when it comes to

love. Schulz was a master of cloaking all this in

the gentle art of humor.

My sense is that we all yearn for a place

where we can be known and loved by oth-

ers. People spend their lives amassing work

achievements and material goods and exciting

vacations and all the other things our society tells

us to strive for. And yet, in our more honest mo-

ments, we simply want to love and be loved, not

perfectly, but authentically, steadily, in a way that

can transform our lives and make them meaning-

ful. Something inside us longs for this, even

though we also may fear opening ourselves up to

such an experience. At our best, the church

seeks to be a place where love can happen. We

start with a God who loves us, and we begin to

find that love reflected in our sharing in a hundred

little but important ways. Come and be part of

the discovery. Don’t live for later regrets."

AAAA couple was golfing one day on a very, very exclusive golf course, lined with million dollar

houses. On the third tee the husband said, "Honey, be very careful when you drive the ball don't knock out any windows. It'll cost us a fortune to fix."

The wife teed up and shacked it right through the window of the biggest house on the course. The husband cringed and said, "I told you to watch out for the houses. Alright, let's go up there, apolo-gize and see how much this is going to cost." They walked up, knocked on the door, and heard a voice say, "Come on in." They opened the door and saw glass all over the floor and a broken bottle lying on its side in the foyer. A man on the couch said, "Are you the people that broke my window?"

"Uh, yeah. Sorry about that." the husband re-plied.

"No, actually I want to thank you. I'm a genie that was trapped for a thousand years in that bottle. You've released me. I'm allowed to grant three wishes-I'll give you each one wish, and I'll keep the last one for myself."

"OK, great!" the husband said. " I want a mil-lion dollars a year for the rest of my life." "No prob-lem-it's the least I could do. And you, what do you want?" the genie said, looking at the wife. "I want a house in every country of the world," she said. "Consider it done." the genie replied.

"And what's your wish, genie?", the husband

said. "Well, since I've been trapped in that bottle, I

haven't had sex with a woman in a thousand years.

My wish is to sleep with your

wife." The husband looks at

the wife and said, "Well, we

did get a lot of money and all

those houses, honey. I guess I

don't care." The genie took the

wife upstairs and ravished her

for two hours. After it was

over, the genie rolled over,

looked at the wife, and said,

"How old is your husband, anyway?" "35." she

replied. "And he still believes in genies?....That's

amazing!"
