Notes from Terrie Berensten , Executive Director

Unfortunately there are common myths and misunderstandings which may prevent people from exploring this compassionate option for “end of life care “.

Here is a list of 8 myths and the truth about what Hospice really offers:Myth #1: Hospice is a place….Hospice is actually care provided wherever and whenever the need exists-most often it is in the patient’s home.

Myth #2: Hospice is only for people with cancer….Hospice is for all patients facing the end of life. Increasingly we serve more and more families coping with end stage chronic illnesses like; heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, COPD as well as cancer.

Myth #3: Hospice is only for people over the age of 65….Yes, it is true that many hospice patients are older, however we serve patients of any age.

Myth #4: Hospice is only for people that are dying….Hospice is about living until you die and living well, with dignity and quality of life.

Myth #5: Hospice is for people who don’t need a high level of medical care….Hospice is serious medical care. We employ experienced medical personnel with special skills and symptom management in order to alleviate distressing symptoms for mind, body and soul.

Myth #6: Hospice is only for people who can accept death……Every person dealing with a terminal illness truly struggles to come to terms with his or hers own death. Hospice has no magic formula for this, however hospice workers are trained to gently help people move at their own pace. One of the hardest decisions a family make is when to call Hospice. In recognizing this, we here at Madrone Hospice encourage and welcome any and all questions or inquiries from families, care givers or any medical personnel that don’t quite understand what Hospice care is all about.

Myth #7: Hospice care is expensive…..Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medi-Cal and many private insurances with no out of pocket cost. Hospice services are provided even if there is no insurance available.

Myth #8: Hospice is used when there is no hope in sight…..When death is approaching, there are two options; yield to hopelessness or live life as fully as possible until the end.

Madrone Hospice provides families with the opportunity to see and participate in the many gifts which can be shared at end of life. Many families look back at their Hospice eperience with much gratitude....as a time of great connection and sharing. Hospice is designed to help families make the most of this time together and to do everything possible to acheive a peaceful passing.

Myths Regarding HospiceIn my experience, I feel confident in saying that most Americans would prefer to die at home with comfort and dignity, surrounded by family. Hospice is a program which is designed to support terminally ill people in their private home, assisted living, residential care facilities and/or the Madrone Hospice House. Hospice uses a team approach, consisting of Registered Nurses, LVN’s, Social Workers/Resource Specialists, Spiritual Support,Volunteers, primary care physicians and complimentary therapy to provide quality, compassionate care not only for our patients, but for their family’s mind, body and spirit during the trying times of going through a loved one’s illness, their death and the bereavement that follows.

Thank you for your generosity!! We would like to give out a big thank you to everyone that made our Spring Fling Dinner and Dance back in June possible. This event was a tremendous success!!! We could not have done it without the support of local vendors, and the community of course! All of the proceeds from this event went to support our senior services lunch programs.

Thank you to:North Siskiyou Dairy who donated all of the cheeses needed for the lasagna. Shasta Valley Meats who donated all of the hamburger needed to make the lasagna.Siskiyou Distributing and Rays Food Place who helped finish out this amazing dinner with discounts on the remaining items needed, i.e. pasta, sauce, salad ingredients etc....Clarence Barger Siskiyou Big Band that provided wonderful music and entertainment for the evening. And last, but certainly not least, Madrone Hospice Staff, Board Members and Community who came together and donated deserts for the silent auction.

honor those who have made a special impact on our lives. Please join Hospice staff and volunteers for this heart felt ceremony with the

lighting of the Christmas tree in Old Town Yreka on Friday, December 6th at 5 pm. You may add the names of your loved ones by making a donation to Madrone Hospice in their memory. All of the donations received help support everything Madrone Hospice has to offer the community. Individuals who donate $50.00 or more will receive a special holiday ornament in recognition of your support and as a

remembrance of your love one. Please contact Cleo at 530-842-6200 for more information.

Hospice SabbathCelebrating National Hospice Month

November 10th, 2013The white rose symbolizes the hope and dignity provided by Hospice. It is also a symbol of the special memories we treasure of those loved ones who have touched our lives in

so many ways. As the church community joins us in observing Hospice Sabbath, we recognize the importance of our partnership

in providing end of life care.Madrone Hospice has provided services to many

individuals who were your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.

We thank you for the opportunities to serve you and our community.

Madrone HospiceFor more information, please call 842-3160

We would like to recognize one of our very special volunteers. Charlene Broce. Char is a Registered Nurse that retired after 8 years of dedicated service with Madrone Hospice. Since her retirement, she has continued to support Madrone Hospice. Char has taken over as the "window dresser" for the Madrone Hospice Shop. Char is a native of Siskiyou County and has a natural talent for creative designs. We are so thankful that Char still volunteers her time with us and makes our Hopice Shop window so beautiful. Thank you Char!!!
