Greater Mission Bend Area Council(GMBAC)

WE ARE A DEED RESTRICTED COMMUNITY • WE ARE A DEED RESTRICTED COMMUNITY

Greater Mission Bend Area Council (GMBAC) is planning these upcoming events:

It’s Springtime. Time for lawn maintenance, tree and shrub pruning, bulb planting, and more . . .Some preparation tips are: 1. clean and aerate flower beds 2. prune roses and crepe myrtle trees 3. cut down cannas and banana trees 4. trim palm trees 5. replace broken or rotten fence boards 6. feed your lawn

Be courteous . . . bundle and tie up all your trimmings and store trash in the appropriate lawn bags to prevent debris from spilling over into the streets and onto your neighbor’s property. Lawn maintenance and proper upkeep of your property contributes to the aesthetics of our neighborhood.

Five Essential Spring Gardening Tips Clean out the Garden: Remove all debris and make sure to get rid of weeds and their roots. Revitalize the soil: The soil is likely dried out. Add moisture and organic materials such as compost or manure. Trim old plants: Plants that survived will need to be pruned to spur new growth Add mulch: In addition to fertilizers and organic materials, add mulch to your garden Plant new flowers and shrubs: Once the old plants are handled, add new ones

Get To Know Your Neighbors Creates CommunityIn our fast-paced, stress-filled world we often don’t create the opportunities we need in order to get to know our neighbors. In days past, good neighbor relations were the staple of every strong community. Being able to share life’s experiences, both good and bad, with those who live so close to us was once considered one of life’s greatest blessings.

These days it is the exception rather than the rule to take time to create strong relationships with the people with whom we share our community...and we are each the poorer because of it. Each one of us has a story to tell, a hand to lend, a laugh to share, and friendship to give. What keeps us from extending ourselves to the families that live around our own? Our changing world focuses more on the individual rather than the family.

Someone once said, “If you always do what you have always done, you’ll always get what you have always got.” If we want to grow as a community then we have to risk breaking free from the isolation we create. We must reach out to our neighbors and let them know that they matter and that we care. If we do that, even in the most seemingly insignificant ways - like a wave as we pass on the street - then we are moving toward a better community and a better way to live.

Let’s reconnect with one another and create a better community.

Please RecycleDo not throw cans, glass bottles, or plastic containers out with your trash. Use the small blue rectangular container for these items. You pay for this service as part of your Tuesday pick-up! Reminder! Heavy trash days are Wednesdays only.

• Make sure household trash is bagged, secured and disposed of in a timely and appropriate manner.

Thank you for taking pride in the appearance of our community. Your cooperation is appreciated!

Chicken Pesto Pizza

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup yellow cornmeal

1 (13.8-ounce can) refrigerated classic pizza crust

1/4 cup pesto, homemade or store-bought

8 (1-ounce slices) fresh mozzarella cheese

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 cup leftover rotisserie chicken

1 cup cherry tomatoes halves

Set Your Priorities! A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks - rocks about 2” in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So, the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The students laughed.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. Now, said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this is your life. The rocks are the important things - your family, your partner, your health, your children - anything that is so important to you that if it were lost, you would be nearly destroyed. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else. The small stuff.

“If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your energy and time on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups.

“Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.

“Take care of the rocks first - the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.
