Collect of the Day
Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image: Teach us to discern your hand in all your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns supreme over all things, now and for ever. Amen.
Post Communion Prayer God our creator, by your gift the tree of life was set at the heart of the earthly paradise, and the Bread of life at the heart of your Church. May we who have been nourished at your table on earth be transformed by the glory of the Saviour’s Cross and enjoy the delights of eternity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

READINGS for —SUNDAY 24th February 2019
The Lesson –Isaiah 55: 10-13 The Old Testament Reading is from the book of the Prophet, Isaiah, Chapter 55, beginning to read at verse 10. 10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. 12 You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. 13 Instead of the thorn-bush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure for ever.’
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God .
The Epistle—1 Corinthians 15: 51-58
The New Testament Reading is from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians, Chapter 15, beginning to read at verse 51.
51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed – 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ 55 ‘Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?
3
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God
(Sung acclaimations)
The Gospel –Luke 6:39-49
Hear the Gospel of our Saviour Christ, according to Saint Luke, Chapter 6, beginning to read at verse 39. Glory to you , Lord Jesus Christ. 39 He also told them this parable: ‘Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher. 41 ‘Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no
attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,” when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. 43 ‘No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.44 Each tree is
recognised by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn-bushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 46 ‘Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord,” and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When the flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it
collapsed and its destruction was complete.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
(Sung acclaimations)

On Ash Wednesday (6th March) we begin our
Lenten journey of faith following the pattern
of our Lord and his 40-day sojourn in the
wilderness. Lent is not only a time of denying
ourselves in some way but also a springtime
experience of growth in faith. Once again,
this year we will hold Wednesday evening
services to help to bring a focus to observance
of the season.
We begin with an Ash Wednesday Holy
Communion service and continue on
following Wednesdays with a short
devotional service at 8.00pm in Church. Our
general theme will be
‘Growing in Discipleship’,
and each week there will be a reflection on
various aspects of growing stronger in being a
disciple of Jesus Christ using themes such as:
Follow, Flourish, Falling, Faithful, Fruitful
and Fulfil.
I hope that you will join us and take time this
Lent to focus on the heart of the matter of be-
ing a follower of Jesus Christ.
