Hymn Christ Whose Glory Fills the Skies (Blue 5)

Children’s reflection. After the reflection, all children are invited to join in the Youth Church downstairs, returning for Communion.

1. Christ whose glory fills the skies, Christ the true, the only light,Sun of righteousness, arise!Triumph o’er the shades of night:Day-spring from on high, be near;Day-star in my heart appear.

2. Dark and cheerless is the mornunaccompanied by thee;joyless is the day’s return, till thy mercy’s beams I see, till they inward light impart.glad my eyes and warm my heart.

3. Visit then this soul of mine, pierce the gloom of sin and grief;fill me, Radiancy divine, scatter all my unbelief;more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day.

Nicene Creed Presider Let us confess our faith, as we say,All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of

heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of theHoly Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of theFather. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Presider Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; welcoming sinnersand inviting them to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God's forgiveness.

Silence is keptPresider Most merciful God,All We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what

we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you withour whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are trulysorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercyon us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,to the glory of your name. Amen.

Presider Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; throughJesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace You are invited to greet those around you in the name of Christ.

Prayer over the GiftsPresider Living God,All you have revealed your Son as the Messiah.

May we hear his word and follow it,and live as children of light. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving Presider The Lord be with you.All And also with you.

Presider Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Presider We give you thanks and praise, almighty God,through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. He is your living Word, through whom you have created all things.By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh of the Virgin Mary and shared our human nature. He lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.In fulfilment of your will he stretched out his hands in suffering, to bring releaseto those who place their hope in you; and so he won for you a holy people. He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his life on the cross, that he might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness ofsin and despair. By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your presence. Now with all creation we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.

Sanctus Choir Felix Mendelssohn

Presider Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death, took bread and gave you thanks, saying, "Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken for you." In the same way he took the cup, saying, "This is my blood which is shed for you. When you do this, you do it in memory of me."Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we offer you this bread and this cup, giving thanks that you have made us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon the offering of your holy Church.Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries, filling them with the Holy Spirit and confirming their faith in the truth, that together we may praise you and give you glory through your Servant, Jesus Christ.

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL 9

All glory and honour are yours, Father and Son, with the Holy Spiritin the holy Church, now and for ever.

All Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Breaking of the BreadPresider We break the bread of life,

and that life is the light of the world. All God here among us, light in the midst of us,

bring us to light and life.Presider The gifts of God for the people of God.All Thanks be to God.

During Communion Richte mich, Gott (Psalm 43) Felix MendelssohnSend out your light and truth O Lord: O let them lead me, and bring me unto your holy hill and to your dwelling place. Then I will go to the altar of God, the God of my joy and gladness: I will praise you upon the harp, O my God.

The Second Sunday after Epiphany | January 19, 201410

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in

a prayer of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread andwine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your first name and in a low voice brieflystate your prayer need. The prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a timefor quiet prayer and meditation.

Sending Out of the DisciplesPrayer After CommunionPresider God of glory,All you nourish us with bread from heaven.

Fill us with your Holy Spirit, that through us your light may shine in all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

DoxologyPresider Glory to God,All whose power, working in us,

can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.Glory to God from generation to generation,in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have par-ticipated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If youdesire to know the love of God that overcomes indifference and despair, if you desire the reconcil-

iation that overcomes estrangement and alien ation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the commoncup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grapejuice are served, grape juice is administered from the pottery chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available uponrequest in the East alcove.

Changes to Children's Gift Sundays Beginning in this new Christian year followingEpiphany, a few changes will be coming withregards to our wonderful Children's Gift Sundays.Rather than holding Children's Gift Sundays oncea month, on each first Sunday, the children andyouth of the parish will be leading four completelyyouth-led service each church year instead. Thiswill give the children and young people of theparish the chance to truly lead our community intheir prayers, thoughts, readings, play, and in deepengagement with the Gospels, with the differentseasons of our church year, and with their own the-ological reflections and ponderings. Our remain-ing youth led services for the coming church yearwill be held on Sunday May 4th in the season ofEaster, on Sunday October 5th in the season ofOrdinary Time, and on Sunday December 7th inthe season of Advent. Our monthly FamilyGatherings will continue after church on the first

Sunday of each month, as this fellowship hasbecome such an important and beautiful time forfamilies to connect and play. I am personallyextremely excited about the liturgical possibilitiesof letting the children "take-over" church fourtimes a year, and cannot wait to share in their gifts, abilities, and remarkable insights. Even the musicwill surprise us! I hope you will find this changeexciting too.

My spiritual home...

I remember a Sunday about six years ago. I hadbeen attending the Cathedral for some time afterhaving searched for months for a church to callmy own. In the liturgy for that morning I heardthe words “you have been adopted into the loveof God”. At that moment, I was overcome bytears of gratitude – I knew that I was home. Ilooked around and realized that this was my fam-ily, and that in the congregation sat my brothersand sisters in Christ. I thank God for this com-munity of faith, and the holy spirit, whose powerworking in us does infinitely more than we canask or imagine.Liz Hamel

Many years ago, perhaps in the reign of Algernonthe Unstable, Ian Alexander, David (Rocky)Rocksborough-Smith and I toiled, as we used tosay, in the vineyards of radio. Radio stationCHQM was at 1134 Burrard, and often wewould race out of there at noon to 690 Burrardfor the Cathedral’s 12:10 service of Eucharist. Itwas offered then only on Tuesdays andThursdays, and conducted by either Ian Grant, who could get through the service in Usain Bolttime, or the delightfully gnomish CanonBrownlee. It is wonderful — refreshing, strengthening and renewing — to find that spir-itual oasis in the middle of the city in the midstof what could be a taxing day. Lyndon Grove

Notes from the Young Adult Ministry CoordinatorJANUARY 19, 2014

Earlier this week, I found myself sitting in theoffice discussing the week’s gospel with Heatherand Marnie. We were preparing for the weekly Beer& Bible gathering at SteamWorks Brew Pub by tak-ing some time with the text ourselves. As we read the text over and over, trying to imag-ine ourselves in the text, wrestling with some of itsimplications for today, Heather asked:“Have you ever found yourself in a relationship ora conversation where you didn’t notice the passageof time?”Perhaps you can imagine what it would have beenlike. You’re standing there with John, perhaps grab-bing lunch from the local Locusts & Honey FoodTruck, when he sees Jesus. Upon seeing him, Johncries out, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” You turn tosee this man you’ve heard so much about, and can’thelp but follow. You can’t help but want to knoweverything about him: who he is, what’s he’s about, and where he’s staying. Such obvious questions.Such human questions.Jesus turns and asks what the disciples – what we –are looking for. Each week we come to church withsuch different expectations. Each day, I find myselfcoming to the God revealed in Jesus, through thepower of God’s Spirit, with so many expectations. Some days I don’t know how to respond to Jesus’question, “what do you seek?”I’ve been a seeker for a long time. And I’m so gladthat rather than answering the question with a sim-ple shrug, Jesus invites me (and all of us) to comeand see. I love that Jesus invites me into deep con-versation. I love that Jesus invites me into a deeprelationship. There are days when the hours just flyby. There are others where the conversation flowsless freely.

These days, I find myself rediscovering “What aFriend We Have in Jesus.” These days, I findmyself invited more deeply into conversation, andrelationship with him. And I’m glad for the oppor-tunity to do this with so many members of thisCathedral community.Beer & Bible has become a significant touchstonefor my week. It’s become a place of conversation, aplace of deepening relationship, and a place of spir-itual nourishment. With Jesus at the centre, sur-rounded by friends and good conversation, it’s justone of those places where time simply flies by.Andrew Stephens Rennie
