Welcome to St. John’s!

Gathering The Holy Spirit gathers us as the people of God

Prelude Whims Robert Schumann Davis Brown, piano

Welcome Please sign the Friendship Pad and pass it to your neighbor in the pew.

Prayers of Confession. Please stand, turning towards the cross of Christ.

We make the sign of the cross as a sign of our baptism.

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Let us pray. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8

Silence for reflection and self-examination. Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

God’s Promise of Forgiveness In the Word who has come to dwell with us, God has given us grace upon grace: forgiveness that is stronger than our sins, love that can heal every broken heart. Hear this word of God: you are forgiven of all your sins, in the name of the Father, + Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

We praise you, O God, our redeemer, creator; In grateful devotion our tribute we bring.

We lay it before you; we kneel and adore you; We bless your holy name; glad praises we sing.

Let us pray. O Lord God, your mercy delights us, and the world longs for your loving care. Hear the cries of everyone in need, and turn our hearts to love our neighbors with the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Word We hear God’s word in scripture reading, preaching, and song

First Reading Psalm 30 Thanksgiving for recovery from grave illness 1I will extol you, O LORD, for you have drawn me up, and did not let my foes rejoice over me. 2O LORD my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. 3O LORD, you brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit. 4Sing praises to the LORD, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. 5For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning. 6As for me, I said in my prosperity, "I shall never be moved." 7By your favor, O LORD, you had established me as a strong mountain; you hid your face; I was dismayed. 8To you, O LORD, I cried, and to the LORD I made supplication: 9"What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the Pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it tell of your faithfulness? 10Hear, O LORD, and be gracious to me! O LORD, be my helper!" 11You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, 12so that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Second Reading Hebrews 12:1-4 The example of Jesus 1Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. 4In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Please stand for the reading of the Gospel. “Alleluia” is an ancient Jewish acclamation that means “God be praised.” In the Christian tradition, Alleluia means “He is risen!”

The Holy Gospel John 16:16-24 Sorrow will turn into joy 16A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me. 17Then some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying to us, 'A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" 18They said, "What does he mean by this 'a little while'? We do not know what he is talking about." 19Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'? 20Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. 21When a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. 22So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23On that day you will ask nothing of me. Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24Until

now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. The Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Please be seated Sermon Pastor Laura Henrik Please stand Hymn 781 Children of the Heavenly Father

TRYGGARE KAN INGEN VARA Apostle’s Creed. The three paragraphs of the Creed express our belief in the three-fold nature of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of Intercession. Each petition ends: Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. The congregation is invited to offer up the names of those they want added to the prayers. Sharing the Peace of Christ The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. Please be seated

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
