The Hephzibah Lady Rebels Softball Team

The Lady Rebels softball team has a lot of ambition and plenty of drive and they are probably going to need it this season. There is a lot of youth on this team. But, from the looks of things they will do just fine.

On a hot summer day around nine o’clock in the morning you can usually find Hephzibah’s softball girls working hard on their new softball field. The current year’s team tryouts are at the

beginning of August, so the team has not yet been set. But that doesn’t matter to these girls. It is clear that all of them want to be on the team and they are working hard to get there. If they have as good a season as they hope to have, Coach Angela Anderson will be a big reason for their success. She clearly wants to see these girls succeed and pushes them to be the best softball players they can be. She also will have the help of her veterans on the team. Raven Ivey and Taylor James are the clear leaders on the team and you can see it on the practice field. When asked about this upcoming season, they both are excited about getting started. Explaining that the team lost many of its seniors last year, including their pitcher, catcher and much of their infield, Raven also added that she was excited about “the season and playing with new people, just seeing how the season is going to come out – we are going to have fun.” Taylor added that “this is a young team, but in practices we do pretty good.” The girls are clearly excited about the season and what it will hold. They have been working hard and have a lot of enthusiasm for the game. That enthusiasm will make this young but driven team one tough opponent for anyone to beat.

Panther Pride!!!. . . at Lakeside High

Everybody in the CSRA has just come to expect that the football team at Lakeside High will win their fair share of football games each season. This season is no exception. But there is a reason for this persistent success, and it becomes very clear after you attend a practice – it is HARD WORK!

The mantra around the field house at Lakeside is “worry about improvement.” These young men demonstrate that they are focused on constant improve-ment on the practice field and in the weight room. On most days through the summer, Coach Jarrett Troxler has held two practices, one in the morning and an optional workout session in the afternoon. “I grew up on a peach farm, so I know what it means to work hard,” says Coach Troxler. He also adds that when he was working on that farm as a kid he could not always make the practice because he was working. This is the reason why he has offered two a day. He

wants his team to have the chance that he did not always have - to commit to the team even when other time commitments demand their attention. “If the guys want to work out, I want to give them the chance to do that,” says Troxler, adding, “and they do

come out!”

Going in the weight room, you can tell that these guys are excited and enthusiastic about what they are doing. They have bought in to what the coaching staff has coached them on over the summer. They have every right to be excited because they have a lot of potential. They have both quarterbacks returning and most of the offense

is intact. They did lose their running back and several key players on defense. But there is reason for optimism on the defensive side of the ball. They have some key leaders coming back such as Kendal Parker, their senior linebacker

and a new defensive coordinator, Kenny Baker.

Will this be a typical year for Lakeside football? There is nothing typical about this team. If they are successful this year in reaching their goals, it will be because of one thing – their work ethic and a healthy dose of PANTHER PRIDE!

The Score OnConditioning

The Principle of Reversibility as it applies to exercise and fitness training means: If you don’t use it, you lose it. This principle is well-grounded in exercise science and is closely related to the biological principle of Use and Disuse. While rest periods are necessary for recovery after workouts, extended rest intervals reduce physi-cal fitness. The physiological effects of fitness training diminish over time, causing the body to revert back to its pretraining condition.

Detraining occurs within a relatively short time period after you stop exercising. Only about 10% of strength is lost 8 weeks after training stops, but 30-40% of muscular endurance is lost during the same time period.

The Principle of Reversibility does not apply to retaining skills. The effects of stopping practice of motor skills, such as weight training exercises or sport skills, are very different. A skill once learned is never forgotten, especially if well learned. Coordination appears to store in long-term motor memory and remains nearly perfect for decades, particularly for continuous skills (e.g., riding a bike, swimming). If you stop training, over time you will lose strength, endurance, and flexibility, but you will remember how to execute the skills involved in performing exercises and activities.

Tips on How to Apply the Principle of Reversibility

1. After long rest intervals, begin a conditioning program to rebuild your base of strength and endurance.

2. For sports, take an active rest to minimize the effects of detraining during the off season.

3. Increase exercise gradually and progressively after a long break. Be patient about regaining your previous fitness level.

4. Do not attempt to lift heavy weight loads without proper conditioning after a long break. You will remember how to properly execute the lifts, but you may sustain an injury if you overestimate how much weight you can lift.

5. Emphasize stretching exercises to regain joint flexibility. This is usually easier for younger adults who participate in sports

. . . Augusta Christian Volleyball

Have you ever heard the expression “a diamond in the rough?” Well, you can find an example of such a diamond in one gym in town. Who are we talking about? The Augusta Christian Volleyball team, of course.

Over the summer, the volleyball team has been practicing in hopes of improving on their record from last year. Some time spent watching their practice sessions gives hope that they may do just that. The team did lose two seniors, but the younger girls are ready to fill their shoes. Coach Chuck Renfro stated that the girls are excited about the season and about the talent that they have on this year’s team. Probably the most impressive of the girls is sophomore Stefanie Bloedel. If you want to see how the game of volleyball should be played, come watch Stefanie. She is intense in her practice and has an amazing ability to bring power and agility to every play she makes. You would not want to be on the other side of the net against her. She has been playing since the 6th grade and just went to Nationals with her traveling team, the SC Juniors, in December.

The coach of any team is usually the reason for the success of that team. Anyone can tell you that Coach Chuck Renfro is a great coach for this team. He expends much energy and time instructing his team and imparts his clear love for the sport. He is also well liked by his team. They call him “a big teddy bear.” Coach Renfro has been the coach since 2006. You can tell that he is excited about their upcoming year because of the team that he has playing for him. He knows that his team is truly “a diamond in the rough.”

They’ve Got HeartCurtis Baptist Football

“I’ve got heart - that’s all I got.” This is what Jason Cabot said as he walked off of the Curtis Baptist practice field the day we visited. This came in response to a statement about his incredible effort. He is not alone in his drive for something bigger this year. Coach Nathan Duffy knows something that most do not in this community – that there is a lot to be excited about for this Curtis Baptist team. First, he explains that Curtis is now in the 1A division, a playing field much more suited to Curtis. That also creates new rivalries with local teams. Curtis is playing Westminster as their first opponent of the season. This game should be a good one, too. This is the first season that Westminster has fielded a varsity team and the first time that the two have

met in a regular season matchup. So on August 27th, the rivalry begins. Coach is also glad that his team has grown and that they have had a successful and intensive summer workout.

The positive attitude on this team brings excitement as well. The team has adjusted well to the changes on the offensive side of the ball and is playing aggressively on the defense. During practice it is easy to see the leaders on the team. First, Cameron McDonnell (QB) is clearly a key player, a quiet leader that the team really follows. Evan King and Jase LeGrand also exhibit strong leadership for The Crusaders. Then you have others such as Jason Cabot. If there was a “Heart” award to give out, he would get it. He shows intensity like no other – always going 150 percent and fun to watch. This is his first year playing football, but he has already won the respect of his team-mates.

So, how will Curtis Baptist do this football season? We will have to wait and see, but one thing is clear – THEY’VE GOT HEART!!

. . . Westminster CheerleadingGoing for Number 1

If you really want to see some serious competitive cheerleading in the CSRA, the place to visit is Westminster Schools of Augusta. This cheerleading squad is serious and definitely one of the best in the area.

The young women that cheer for Westminster are a tough group. Most of these girls have faced a lot of adversity on the mat. The first and foremost challenge for this squad is finally winning the State Champion-ship. Think about this – Westminster has finished 2nd in State five years in a row. Every year they miss first by the smallest of margins, but they keep coming back to the gym trying to improve on the year before. The cool thing is that they feed off of their previous disappointment and use it for motivation. As a strange twist of fate, they have improved considerably every year but their competition has improved as well. Each year they work harder, train harder and increase their skill level to stay ahead of their increasingly talented competition. Through all their hard work, their injuries, and their drive they have reached a level that is nearly unmatched in the area.

So it would seem that this is their year to take State. You go into their gym and they own the mat. You see girls double fulling out of chin-chins, doing layouts, running tucks, and displaying spirit that is out of this world. These young women are on a mission this year. They not only have something to prove at State, but they also have something to prove to themselves. GO WILDCATS!!

ARC and Westside Volleyball gets help from Augusta State .

Ok. How cool is this? We get an email from Coach McCullough, the ARC volleyball coach, asking us to come out to a practice. All we knew was that we were to be at the ASU gym that afternoon. When we arrived, we quickly learned that this was far more than a practice. There was something really awesome taking place here. What we found was the ASU coach Sharon Bonaventure and two of her players, Lagi Roberts and Christina Raiford, teaching ARC and Westside students the skills of the game. To top that, this was the second day of the ASU camp. Apparently, the first day they had Butler and a few other local schools in attendance.

The camp was a great success. All of the students had fun and Coach McCullough said that she could tell that they were progressing in their skill level. They went through serving drills, agility drills, and much more. The really cool thing is that this is a camp that will prep them for their tryout for the team the first week of August.

Lagi, in her second year playing at ASU, said that she simply enjoyed helping these high school athletes out and appre-ciated the opportunity. Christina Raiford, a new addition on the Lady Jags, said that this was her first summer here and that it was a great way to get to know the community. We thank you, Coach Bonaventure and Lady Jags, for not only helping our high school athletes, but also for being positive role models for our students.
