This month finds the detachment in exceptionally good shape.

Many thanks to Dave and Delana Winkler for their sacrifice of per-

sonal time to maintain what is by far, the best Detachment Facility in the State of

Missouri. Dave and Delana are off on a well deserved vacation.

I have witnessed this wonderful duo work countless hours in keeping the building

and grounds in tip top shape. Rest well D and D, hurry back, you are missed.

A special thanks to Mike Downey and to all those that attended our “Safe Serve

Food Handling Course”. Mike’s expertise, friendly manner of teaching and

knowledge is greatly appreciated for bringing our staff up to date on food handling and preparation skills.

On Sunday, September 13, I as well as Chief Pit Master “Stel”, Ken McGuffey, myself and two of Stel’s

friends cooked up a big batch of grub for the Focus Marine group in Augusta, MO. What an honor to serve

these heroes.

Cut-off date for tickets for the Marine Corps Ball is fast approaching. After October 27, 2015, general tick-

eting will be open to the public. If you don’t have your tickets by then you may be out of luck for this year.

Ladies Auxiliary: Sharon Easter

It’s hard to believe summer is now behind us and Fall is in the air with some very welcome cooler temperatures. It’s been a busy summer for our Auxiliary and September has shaped up to be very busy also. Carole & Ed Lyston, as well as Bonnie & Steve Michalski were in attendance at the National MCL/MCLA Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona the week of August 9th and came home with some very good news for our Auxiliary: Thanks to Carole Lyston’s diligence, persis-tence, and creativity in putting together our 2014-2015 Auxiliary Memory Book, it was awarded 1st Place out of ten (10) Memory Books submitted. CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU, Carole, for taking the time to put this book together. As we browse through it and remember the good times we have had and the memories we have made, it is a very good ex-ample of the activities we as an Auxiliary have done TOGETHER. Carole also shared the good news that our South St. Louis MCLA Unit took 1st Place in monetary donations. And, that the Department of Missouri took 1st Place in the American Red Cross blood donations. WAY TO GO LADIES … it’s thanks to each of you who made these memories and these recognitions possible for our Auxiliary Unit. While our Yard Sale at the Detachment didn’t take place on August 29th as planned, we hope to have had it on Wednesday, September 16th. This is just one of several fund raisers we are doing to boost our Treasury. We are also selling the “World’s Finest Choco-late” bars (only $1.00 each) at some of our up-coming activities in September. You may re-member buying these years ago when they were somewhat of a ‘chunky’ bar back then.

They are not quite so chunky today, but they are still a very good chocolate bar. AND, we are partnering with the Private George Phillips Auxiliary for a “Side of Beef Raffle” to benefit “FOCUS Marines Founda-tion”. Again, we will be selling these tickets at our upcoming events. The Night at the Races was held on September 19th and we hope you were there betting on your favorite horses and went home a winner. The American Red Cross Blood Mobile will once again be out in front of the Detachment on Septem-ber 26th. Contact Carole McCarthy at 636.244.0270 to sign up, or stop by at your convenience between 9AM and 1PM. The meal for the September 29 League Meeting will be Ham, Sweet Potatoes, Au Gratin Potatoes, Corn, Collard Greens with Spinach, Corn Bread & Dessert.

“The Scoop” went to press before we were able to share the results of the annual “Night at The Races”, that was held on September 19. We don’t have the winning “Nags” or their Jockeys available to print, but we know that all had a great time. Pre-sales of tick-ets was brisk and a large crowd was expected. This is a great fund-raiser for the Deatchment. Next month we will let you know the results of the event. Don’t forget the Detachment Bar-B-Que on October 10th. Proceeds to benefit the FOCUS Marines foun-dation. Should be more info in this Scoop. Will need help and customers.

Just started reading a book titled “The Things They

Carried” which is about the military during the Viet

Nam War. The book was published in 1990. Since I

was “in country” 1968-1969, I thought it would be

quite interesting. Will give you a review in next

month’s Scoop.

THIRD REQUEST… To those members of the Honor and Color

Guard that are no longer active, we need

your raincoats. New members are without

rain gear and as you well know, the weath-

er can be “iffy” this time of year. Unless

all members have raingear, we all get wet.

We have only received two raincoats . We

know that there are many more out there.

Please help your fellow Marines that need

“dry gear” for Honors.

A special thanks to John Koch as he re-

tires as team leader for Team 2 and leader

of the detachment Honors program. John

has faithfully served as team leader for

over 5 years and has participated in over

1,000 Honors ceremonies as well as

countless Color Guard duties.

Well done good and faithful servant, Sgt.

John Koch, you deserve many kudos for

your service.

Give John an OORah when you see him.

Bob Jost will be taking over as Honors

coordinator and Pat Powell will head up

Team 2.

Walk-ins are always welcome but appointments take priority.

We have been experiencing water issues with our roof and recently called several roofing companies for estimates. Innovative Construction and Roofing responded to our call. After learning about the Detachment and what we stand for and what we provide to the com-munity, Brian Benson and Tim Medlock, offered to provide free labor to repair the roof. Other estimates were in excess of $2,000. Many thanks to Innovative and their team for provid-ing a much needed service to MCL 183. If you have a roofing or construction need, remember Innovative and if possible use them as a payback for their kind donation.

Newsworthy Notes — August 2015

MCL 183 Fund Raising Activities.

A key to the Detachment success is the fund raising that is done by various individuals and groups.

Below are guidelines that make these activities more effec-tive.

Steve Michalski is the Chair of Fund Raising Activities. If you are planning an event to raise funds in the next Year – please send Steve the following:

Join us every Monday night 6:30-10:00 for a Texas Hold-Em tournament. Only a $20 buy in, or just come in and have a beer.

The Event Name, Estimated income, Estimated expenses, and Timing of the event. This ap-proach will enable us to better forecast income, it will ensure that duplicate events are not planned. We have had instances where this has occurred..

Monday Night Pool League

We are looking for players for a Monday night Pool league. Membership is $10. The weekly Fee is $28 – so with four players it’s $7. We would like to have six players so no one has to be there every week. Play is at other locations as well as at the Detach-ment. Contact John Hamilton 314-221-5318 for more information.

HELP! A piano has been donated by the family of Terry Strahan. It has been in their family for generations and is a great addition to our chapel. Many of the Hall and Chapel renter’s have asked for a piano. Here is the problem. The piano is in need of repair and it will take about $300 to accomplish this. All expenditures for this are on a donation ba-sis. Please send donations to Russ Hitzemann—Quartermaster at the detachment.
