The Scientific Method
The scientific method is a logical approach to problem solving by using a set of ordered steps. The number of steps may vary depending on the type of problem.
This method is used mostly by scientists, but can be successfully applied to almost any problem.

There are five basic steps to the process scientists’ use in their investigations.
1. State the problem
2. Hypothesis
3. Testing
4. Analyze results
5. Conclusion

Step 1: State the problem
This step is usually completed by making observations, collecting data, taking measurements, and weeding out useless information.
You cannot solve a problem without knowing what the problem is!!

Step 2: Form a hypothesis
A hypothesis is a testable statement which some people refer to as “an educated guess”.
It is a possible solution to the problem and serves as a basis for making predictions and carrying out experiments.

Step 3: Testing
Testing the hypothesis requires performing an experiment that provides data to support or refute the hypothesis.

Step 4: Analyzing Results
The data collected from the experiment must be analyzed. Tables, models and graphs are used to show how data is related and to help clarify the results.

Step 5: Conclusion
There are only two possible conclusions after analyzing the results.
1. The data support the hypothesis.(Remember, a hypothesis can never be proven with one experiment)
2. The data refute the hypothesis. At this point, more research needs to be done, the hypothesis revised, and a new experiment devised.
The Scientific Method
Sometimes progress in science happens because of accidental discoveries, but the most significant advances result from carefully planned investigations.
