Steps in the Scientific Method Step 1: Ask a QuestionStep 2: Form a HypothesisStep 3: Develop a ProcedureStep 4: Gather DataStep 5: Draw a Conclusion

Ask a QuestionWhat do you want to learn about?

What happens to ice in the sun?Does a plant grow faster in the sun or in the shade?

Form a Hypothesis Make a prediction about what you think will happen.

The ice will melt faster in the sun.The plant will grow better in the sun than in the shade

Develop a Procedure Make a plan that says what steps you are going to take and what materials you will use:

Step 1: Make ice cubesStep 2: Put one set of ice cubes in the sun and one in the shade.Step 3: Measure the time it takes the ice to melt.

Gather DataMake a note of what happens. Do more than one trial.

Write down the time it takes ice to melt.Write down how many inches a plant grows.

TrialsEach trial means one test. When you retest, you will have more than one trial.

Repeated tests make your results more reliable.Trial 1Trial 2Trial 3HeightWeightDraw a ConclusionWhat does the evidence (your data) tell you about what is happening?

Was your hypothesis right or wrong?
