Cabling and Jacketing: The Science behind Manufacturing of Industrial Copper Wires

The Science behind Manufacturing of Industrial Copper WiresGanpati Engineering| Jaipur, India | www.ganpatiengineering.com 1The copper wires undergo a series of manufacturing and engineering processes before they are ready for use. The stranded and braided copper wires are special set of copper wires that are used for specific industrial applications.

The primary cabling and jacketing process makes the braided copper wires far stronger than the bare copper wires. The braided copper wires are grouped during cabling and stranding operation.

How to eliminate the moisture from braided copper wires during manufacturing? The braided copper wires produced by cabling process are susceptible to moisture. It can cause internal faults and also cause noise interference. In order to remove moisture from the cables and ensure dry operation, the braided copper wires are pressurized. Use of air-core cables at the cabling station keeps the moisture from entering into the gap between wires and the covering.

Another method to prevent moisture from entering the cables is the use of gel compounds. The cable is filled with the gel using core wraps. The gel compound can be introduced at two stages of cabling process. They are:

During the twisting process at cabling stationDuring the jacketing process

Yes, they do. The jacketed braided copper wires are filled with gels and the core is then passed through a stream of hot water. Aluminium sheath around the braided copper wires ensures that the cable is capable of withstanding the high voltage surges, during a lightning strike. It acts as a grounding path for aerial cabling layouts. A combination of aluminium and steel sheath is also used for copper cables. Steel sheath with corrugations provide mechanical strength for buried cables susceptible to floods and pest attacks. Low density polyethylene is used for braided copper wires exposed to sunlight and long distance overheads.
