DEAN’S LECTURE SERIES 2011
Mechai Viravaidya is the founder of the Population and Community Development Association (PDA), one of Thailand’s largest and most diversified NGO, which works across 15 provinces to address rural poverty. He has also held many key positions in the Thai Government, including Cabinet Spokesman, Minister of the Office of the Prime Minister, and been Chairman of several of Thailand’s largest government-owned enterprises. He was also elected to the Senate between 1987-1991, 1996-2000, and 2000-2006.
For his efforts in various development and educational endeavors, Mechai Viravaidya has received numerous awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service (1994), one of Asiaweek’s “20 Great Asians” (1995), the United Nations Population Award (1997), one of TIME Magazine’s “Asian Heroes” (2006), the Bill and Melinda Gates Award for Global Health (2007), the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship (2008), and the Prince Mahidol Award for Public Health (2009).

DEAN’S LECTURE SERIES 2011Mechai Viravaidya Lecture
The school that wants to fly: the new paradigm of rural Thai education
According to Mechai Viravaidya, Thai education is archaic and does not foster students’ imagination and creativity. In this lecture he will discuss how to change schools from a place where kids simply pass through to a lifelong learning centre for the entire community.
In 2009, the Mechai Viravaidya Foundation established an alternative education secondary school and community centre. This new endeavor is known as the School-Based Integrated Rural Development program (School-BIRD). It establishes a model that will transform schools into platforms for social and economic development in rural Thailand and at the Bamboo School (Mechai Pattana School) in northeastern Thailand, it has already begun to provide a quality education to underprivileged students as well as serving nearby villages to promote community empowerment, income generation and democracy.
