THE SCENE MAY 201010

By Adam Donaghey

The crawfish craze is stillgoing strong here in theClear Lake area; and Alan'sSeafood Market seems tobe a big part of that. Butsupplying the Houston BayArea with tons of crawfish, shrimp, crab and all sorts ofother wild caught Gulfseafood just isn't enoughfor Paul Latour and AlanFranks. So, if you're lookingfor a weekend seafood boilwithout the effort and agreat picturesque view, come on out to Paul andAlan's newest concept, CrazyAlan's Swamp Shack, locatedright next door!

Pictured on the cover ofthis month's SCENE Maga-zine are Paul and Alan'scousins, Boudreaux and Thi-bodeaux! They've come allthe way from Louisiana, look-ing for the Swamp Shack. Ac-cording to Paul and Alan, thestory started a long, long time ago on a bright and sunny af-ternoon in Louisiana’s Atchafalaya Basin (the Big Swamp nextto N'awlins). Boudreaux and Thibodeaux were busy settingtrotlines and crab traps; preparing, as they normally did, foran evening of catchin’ crabs and catfish, giggin, frogs, trampin’ flounder and huntin’ alligators. Suddenly, the windstarted howling and the water started rising and the skyturned black! Obviously, one heckuva tempest was a brewin’(Hurricane Katrina) and before the cousins could es-cape to higher ground, the levee broke andwashed the two fellas out to sea and all the wayout to the capitol of Louisiana – Houston, Texas.(Haha!)

After three days of floundering around in Buf-falo Bayou, the boys finally hit dry land and youcan bet they were hungry! Since then, they'vebeen spotted all over Houston, Galveston and theClear Lake area looking for their kinsmen and theSwamp Shack. Craving seafood like they get backhome, Boudreaux and Thibodeaux are really look-ing forward to finding the Swamp Shack becausethey hear it specializes in boiled fresh Gulf craw-fish, shrimp, crab and lobster; additionally offeringboth raw and baked oysters, jumbo fried shrimp,

Cajun gumbo, and red beans and rice. The Cajun cousins have also developedquite a thirst due to all that saltwater, soa few ice-cold beers to help washeverything down can't hurt!

The Swamp Shack features incredibleviews of the Kemah Boardwalk Marina– especially atop the rooftop deck.Relax and enjoy scheduled crawfishboils and other events, along with livemusic on the weekends. Reasonableprices and friendly service will roundout the dining experience and ensurea good time.

Located at the base of the Kemahbridge, next to Molly's, Crazy Alan'sSwamp Shack is sure to be a hit forfolks who dig rooftop decks, killerviews, live music, and most impor-tantly, a laid back, casual atmosphere.Friends of Boudreaux and Thi-bodeaux (Houston Bay Area residents)will be given a customer appreciationdiscount card. So, if you seeBoudreaux and Tibideaux out andabout, make sure they can find their

way to the Swamp Shack!

Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack will open second week of May.For more information, check out the website atwww.theswampshack.com or call 281-334-1445. And pleasepoint Boudreaux and Tibideaux in the right direction!

Editor’s Note: Alan wanted to make sure our SCENE readersknow, this story is all in fun and no Cajuns were harmed in themaking of this story.

THE SCENE’S FILM COLUMN BY INDEPENDENT FILM PRODUCER & ACTOR ADAM DONAGHEY

The 2010 DALLAS Interna-tional Film Festival (DIFF) was atightly run, well-organized andmanaged event this year; con-trary to concerns about the suc-cess of the festival sans itsAmerican Film Institute (AFI) affil-iation. The Dallas Film Societyclearly took its role very seriouslyin maintaining a well-orderedmachine, in order to providefestival quality films, along withbalancing out celebrity appear-ances. Now that the red car-pet's been rolled up and thedust has settled – and yet peopleare still talking about the festival ,we cansee it from a much clearer perspective.

Chairman of the Board and face of thefestival, Michael Cain, has taken whatbegan as a small, independent film festi-val (Deep Ellum Film Festival) and turnedit into what it is today. Not only should afilm festival screen amazing, cutting edgefilms; but at the helm should be all thefilmmakers who make these films. Takingcare of the individuals behind the films isof utmost importance with regards to fes-tival experience. Dallas knows how totake care of its filmmakers.

This year marked my third anniversaryof attending the festival as a filmmaker;and I can safely say, it's been my favoriteexperience thus far. Perhaps that hassomething to do with the fact that I'vemet so many people in the last three

years involved with the festival, the presswho covers the festival and Dallas film cul-ture in general. But ultimately, I found my-self at a festival where a filmmaker canscreen his or her film and not get lost inthe shuffle of A-list celebrities and big-bud-geted films. Not that there weren't a tonof A-list celebrities and big-budgeted films– there were! – but this has to do with theorganization of the festival as a whole. InDallas, it doesn't matter how successfulyou are; as long as you're a filmmaker, you get the rock-star treatment. Person-ally, my week was filled with red carpetappearances, interviews and publicityspots, and I didn't even star in, write or di-rect the films I'm associated with!

This year I had two films I produced atthe festival, LOVERS OF HATE and EARTH-LING. While both films did really well,EARTHLING stole the show probably hav-

ing something to do with all the pre-festival press it received as well asbeing one of Dallas Observer's mostanticipated films of the fest. Not onlydid it sell out its two scheduledscreenings; but received a thirdscreening at the Dallas Museum ofArt to accommodate those folksturned away. Several other films re-ceived the same treatment due to theforesight and flexibility of DIFF staff.

Aside from packed houses and suc-cessful screenings, DIFF cleverly bal-

anced its festival-quality content with allsorts of celebrities, award-winning film-makers and loads of events and parties.Texas native and Fort Worth regular, BillPaxton, who I've met on several other oc-casions, was seen at all the events overopening weekend.

By Heaven Padgett

Eyelashes serve a purpose onthe eye similar to the whiskers of acat. They can sense movementand warn the eye to close to ward off dust, mites or other parti-cles that can cause irritation. But culturally, the eyelash has al-ways been a symbol of femininity and beauty. Today’scelebrities sport thick, healthy, long and lush eyelashes thatmake the face look more alluringand emphasize the contour andshape of the eye itself. Here is aguide to the many ways you canbring out the flirt in your eyes.

Lash dyeing or tinting: Lashdyes are usually made from veg-etable dyes and are relatively safefor everyone except those withextremely sensitive eyes. Whiledyeing your lashes is pointless for those who already have darklashes it is a godsend for others who were born with palelashes. Busy people who don’t want to apply mascara every-day can have the benefit of lashes looking more noticeablewith lash tint. It won’t run or smudge but it also won’t give youthe volume and length that mascara will. There are at-homekits for lash tinting, but if you are unsure of how to use them, seek a professional.

False or Fake Eyelashes: Fakies are my favorite way to getinstant glamour and fullness. Ardell makes great lashes thatcome with adhesive and they can be trimmed down to fit theeye. Make sure that you apply your eye shadow before youapply the lashes, as glue has a harder time sticking to oily skin.Apply glue to the lash then fold in a horseshoe pattern andgently blow on the glue for about 10 seconds. This allowstime for the wet glue to become tacky. Rest your elbow on thetable or vanity, and steady your arm against the table. Verycarefully, press the lash as close to the eyelid as possible, plac-ing them at the outer corner first and working your way to-ward the inner corner, keeping it right along the base of thelashes so you do not create a space. Keep in mind that applica-tion of fake eyelashes will get easier with time and practice. When you have the lash in place, hold it until completely set.You can also apply individual lashes if you want the effect to bemore subtle. Apply using same technique except use tweezersto place lashes one by one.

Eyelash Extensions: Lash extensions can be a modern mir-acle when applied properly. Synthetic lashes come in an arrayof lengths and sizes and are applied to each individual lashusing a safe adhesive.

for the public. Over 5 miles of nature trails introduce visitors to the bayou, forest andprairie ecosystems. Reptiles and aquatic displays are a must to view in the Education

Building. A discovery table is on exhibit for all to explore animal bones, shells andother interesting objects. The recreated Martyn Farm and Hanson House

teaches visitors about farm life in the early 1900s with hands on instructionsand history.

The center offers pontoon boat rides and canoe rides to view over 220species of birds. There is also a bird blind, prairie observation platform and

a bison exhibit. Armand Bayou Nature Center also has over 370 speciesof wildlife. A walk on the boardwalk through the forest water-gladeis another opportunity to see wildlife in its natural habitat. Volun-

teers have been an important part of Armand Bayou Nature Centersince its beginning and continue to be an essential part of its existence.

Programs, field trips and volunteer opportunities are always welcomed.

For more information on the center, call 281-474-2551 or visit www.abnc.org. Located at 8500 BayArea Blvd., Armand Bayou is a wildlife adventure for the whole family.

Style Column: LashesContinued from Page 26

The volume is incredible and the lashesfeel like your own, not heavy or gunky withglue or mascara- in fact you won’t evenneed mascara. They are the perfect optionfor a big event such as a wedding or prom, but the constant upkeep can be pricey. Theprocedure takes a while and lashes fall outeveryday so every two-weeks, visits arequite necessary. For those that can affordthe luxury, lash extensions are a great op-tion. Be sure to research the business be-forehand, as incorrectly applied extensionscan cause your natural lashes to all fall out.

Eyelash Growth Products: There aremany options available for the promotionof eyelash growth. Latisse is a prescription-only medication that you apply daily to the

lashes. The side effects are very rare, and itis almost guaranteed to work, but it can beexpensive. You must use the product forfour months for the full effect and thencontinue use or the lashes will eventuallygo back to their natural state. Revita-lashand Lilash are also options, but they mostlycontain conditioning and strengtheningproperties to promote healthy eyelashgrowth; therefore, these do have much lessrisk of side effects – which can include itchy, irritated eyes or eyelid discoloration.

Make Up/Cosmetics: Of course theeasiest and quickest way possible to en-hance the eyes and lashes is through cos-metic application. All you need is a lashcurler, mascara and eyeliner. Start by usingan eyelash curler and placing the deviceclose to the base of the lashes. Hold there

for about 10-15 seconds. Then slide thecurler out to the tips for another 10 to 15seconds. Repeat on the other eye. Curlingthe lashes opens the eyes and makes themlook brighter. Next, apply liquid eyeliner bysweeping across the top lid right on thebase of the lashes. Liquid eyeliner gives thevisual that you have longer lids with thickerlashes. Lastly, sweep on some thickeningmascara by starting at the base and zig-zag-ging the wand out through the tips. If youwant more than one coat, don’t let themascara dry completely- just wait about 10seconds and then re-apply. Add more tothe tips for a super long look.

Recommended tools: Heavenly LashCurler $7, Heavenly Liquid LashLiner $15,Heavenly VolumeX Mascara $19. (Sold ex-clusively at The Hairem Salon)

I also had a great deal of time to spendwith my friend, Jeff Scheftel (writer/direc-tor/producer “Biography” & “Modern Mar-vels”) who was therewith a Darfur doc, THELAST SURVIVOR.Bummed about missingWINTER'S BONE for thethird festival in a row (itpremiered at Sundance),I was relieved when Ihad a chance to catchup with lead actor andTexas lover, JohnHawkes. Additionally, meeting Frank Darabont (writer/directorTHE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION & THEGREEN MILE), Tim McCanlies (writer THEIRON GIANT), and actress Karen Black(EASY RIDER) were high points. The lowpoint was meeting Clint Howard in an ele-vator and not recognizing him until longafter I'd put my foot in my mouth – Ohwell. He silently forgave me by acceptingmy Facebook request!

Most of the official parties took place atthe Palomar Hotel (across from the Ange-lika Theatre in Uptown Dallas, the venuefor most of the screenings); and DIFF,who's been known for its festival loungein the past, certainly didn't let us downthis year. The lounge boasted three arcademachines (with tons of games on each),Billiards, a Foosball table, Wii, full serviceopen bar all ten days, DJ, and “Red CarpetCrash” nightly coverage. Suffice it to say,

the lounge was certainly a convenientdestination point for filmmakers, press andfestival guests.

Dallas has certainly come a long waywith its festival; andas long as strongprogramming and awelcoming attitudecontinue to prevail,I'm certain the festi-val will thrive foryears to come.Kudos to the DIFFstaff. You can bet I'llattend next year!

Musicians of this caliber cover ex-penses with CD sales. We bought hercomplete set and play it along with the"Mark May Band Live In Texas" CD that'samong our favorites.

Speaking of eclectic, while last year's94.5 Buzz Music award winners are outconquering the region, A.D. and ScoutBar have been bringing in some verytasty eclectic sounds onto the SCENE.No wimpy stuff, mind you, but with thevolume and power their patrons ex-pect. We took in national touring actLocal H and their "unorthodox two-manlineup" as well as the Mighty Orq (oneof the SCENE’s poorly kept secrets). Youcan tell new good stuff when you hearit. When the staff stops to watch and lis-ten, you know it. Get the idea? Go ex-pand yourself... Go catch some livemusic...

Houston’s Saint Arnold cracks the top 50We reported earlier this year that Houston’s Saint Arnold Brewing Co. had a record year in

2009 and reported at that time the crew was basically brewing around the clock while lookingforward to the now-complete move to the new, largerfacility with the larger brewhouse near downtown. Butaccording to the just-released Brewers Association an-nual list, the patron saint of brewers is now among the50 largest craft breweries in the nation finishing at No.48. Saint Arnold finished No. 51 in 2008, but growth of13 percent in 2009 not only moved the brewery up thelist, but significantly outpaced the craft brewing industryoverall. The largest U.S. craft breweries are 1. BostonBeer Co. (Boston, MA); 2. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

(Chico, CA); 3. New Belgium Brewing Co. (Fort Collins, CO); 4. Spoetzl Brewery (Shiner, TX);5. Pyramid Breweries Inc. (Seattle, WA); 6. Deschutes Brewery (Bend OR); 7. Matt Brewing Co.(Utica, NY); 8. Magic Hat Brewing Co. (Burlington, VT); 9. Boulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City,MO) and 10. Harpoon Brewery (Boston, MA).

CRAFT BEER TASTING • Cont. from Pg 53

More on Faust’s imports next month as May isAmerican Craft Beer month, and this tasting wasall about American Craft Beer. The Faust Ameri-can Craft Beer portfolio includes Abita Beer(Abita Springs. LA.), Bards Beer (Minneapolis,MN.), Boulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City, MO),Bridgeport Brewing Co. (Portland, OR), De-schutes Brewery (Bend, OR), Leinenkugel’s(Chippewa Falls, WI), New Belgium BrewingCo. (Fort Collins, CO), Samuel Adams (Boston,MA), Sierra Blanca Brewing Co. (Moriarty, NM)and Spoetz Brewery (Shiner, TX). That is a solidline-up of breweries and some of the best craftbeer on the market. Here in Texas, Shiner is to

beer what Blue Bell is to ice cream. And mostadults are probably familiar with Samuel Adamsand Boston Beer Company from their nationalad campaigns and Abita Beer, being next doorin Louisiana, is not new to the Texas market. Buthowmany of you have heard of DeschutesBrewery out of Oregon? Although one of thetop 10 craft brewers in the country, Deschutes isrelatively new in Texas and even some of thebar owners and beer buyers at the tasting hadnever heard of it. Of course others – includingmyself and all the fellows in attendance fromSpecs – were not just familiar, but fans. Take alook above as we feature Deschutes and namea couple places to get it on draft.

Featured Brewing Company: DESCHUTES

Deschutes Brewery is located along the banks ofthe wild and scenic Deschutes River in Central Ore-gon. It started out as a small brewpub in the heart ofdowntown Bend in 1988 and the first of its hand-crafted ales were the Black Butte Porter, Bachelor Bit-ter and Cascade Golden Ale. (Note: The BlackButte Porter, which is awesome and a top seller, isavailable on draft today at Doc’s Upper Deck inClear Lake and Fox and Hound at the beltway.) In1993, Deschutes moved into its current brewingfacility and has continued expanding and improv-ing the facilities and also operates two brew pubs, one at the original location in Bendand one in Portland. With a 50-barrel traditional gravity brew house and a new one-of-a-kind 131-barrel Huppmann brew system from Germany, the main Deschutes breweryis able to create and experiment with specialty batches of limited beers like The Abyssand Hop Trip while brewing large quantities of more popular beers like Mirror Pond PaleAle. (Note: Mirror Pond Pale Ale, also awesome, is on tap at Chelsea’s in El Lago.)

Next time you order a beer, inquire if a Deschutes is an option. - John Ennis

If you like beer – and you do or youwould not be reading this – then gear upfor American Craft Beer Week, a seven-daycelebration of all things barley, water, yeastand hops. It’s holy week for beer maniacs.

The purpose is to support America’s smalland independent craft brewers. In some

parts ofthe country, this has already turned intoa national celebration highlighting theculture and contributions of craft beer. Here in Texas, specifically Houston, thecraft beer movement is just starting tocatch on as more and more people aretrying and then choosing full-flavoredcraft beer over the bland, mass-pro-duced offerings of the “big guys.”

So look for the Declaration of Beer In-dependence on display at your favoritebar and restaurant during AmericanCraft Beer Week (May 11-17) and sign itin support of the accomplishments ofAmerica’s small and independent family-owned craft brewers.

Thanks to Jack Law and the team over at FaustDistributing, I started celebrating American CraftBeer early this year. Just before this issue went topress, I visited the 30-acre, 170,000-square-footFaust distributing facilty for a tasting showing offtheir growing craft beer offerings. Founded in1957 by Don Faust, the company has long andstrong ties to Miller Brewing Co. As a matter of fact,if you have downed a Miller Lite in Harris County, itprobably spent time on a Faust truck. While Millerand Coors make up a majority of Faust’s business, they have embraced current trends and carry agreat line of imports (Bass, Heineken, Guinness,Harp, Red Stripe, Hoegaarden, Stella Artois, etc.)and American Craft beers.

OVER THE TOP: Goes to Sister Mary Tarantula at the SixString Rock Bar, both new on the SCENE. This Pasadena based nu-clear powered band was on our schedule months ago but a lastminute scratch had Ernie (a behind the SCENE music supporter)scrambling to get this new show. Nice job Ernie. And thank youFranchelle, for kindly bugging us to see them. Myrna's right aboutthis band, frontman Gibb is without a doubt one of the strongervocalists in the region. We think he sounds a lot like Ronnie JamesDio (Black Sabbath & Ozzy) plus the range of Bruce Dickinson(Iron Maiden). The only other vocalist from our region we recallwith such a set of pipes was Kelley Sundowner who has sincegone out touring Europe and Asia. We're not sure if Tarantula willgo international, but they travel with one of the better local en-tourages we've seen. Think Loomis' Army, Tail Dragger's Brigade,Dreamsicle's Oleanders, the Hobson's Choices, get the idea?Rounding out Tarantula's stage are Carlos (guitar/vocals), "E"(drums/vocals) and Jeremy (bass) who together provide a showthat starts strong and impressively grows stronger through theevening. Not too many bands can do this. They're working on anew CD due out later in the summer, so we checked out theiroriginals (easy to locate on Facebook or Myspace) and found theirmusic crisp, clever and comprehendable. (Not many are capable

of this either). We picturethis "Hard Rock, Metal &More" band fitting in atplaces such as Six Strings,Hugh & Jeff’s, Dempsey's,and even Scout Bar.Pester your bookingagents, okay?

TOURSTOPCLEARLAKE: A.D. of94.5 The Buzz gave theTexas Buzz crowd at theScout Bar a treat bringingin national act, Local H."We thought we'd givefolks a treat with this na-tional act,” he explained.

“Expect a larger inner loop turnout this evening." Think hard justhow many two-piece hard rock, metal groups you know of outthere and with seven albums... We got the same answer, too.

WHAT'S NEW: A plethora of new material emerged on theSCENE inApril. Lead-ing off, MikeShanks (MisfitToys) is pol-ishing hisacoustic slateat the T-Bone's andSeagull jamswith topshelf areamusicians.Don't think this Balladeer's gone soft going acoustic as he stillpacks his gutsy gritty punch with a passion and energy thatmakes audiences stop and listen and carries a mean joke. Mike'sputting his show on the road, ask for him at your favorite SCENEhangout.Madigantook the leadat Heads -N-Tails unleash-ing newlyadded Reg-gae andNew Wavefilling in thegrooves thatthe region has been needing. More please... The Hilton is nowon the beat with poolside music parties on Saturdays. Theacoustics here are very unique and with the right band and PA,Matthew might have one exquisite music venue here. Not quitelike Red Rocks, but you get the idea. Heads up that the Heads &Tails acoustic jam is moving to Thursday Nights. Lynn Raggioand Pat Beadles are back hosting this show.

Elegance & Class: We stopped in at Chelsea's, picked a LaCreme Pinot and enjoyed internationally touring musician Gin-ger Leigh. Sweet, sophisticated, sassy and classy.

COVER STORY

By Adam Donaghey

As the weather's getting warmer and the days longer, we'refinding that summer's creeping up on us. What better way torelax on a sunny afternoon in the Clear Lake area than with acouple of fish tacos and a fresh-squeezed Margarita? Awardwinning Berryhill Baja Grill's newest location in League City’sSouth Shore Harbour makes it super easy to shave off an houror two of work before heading home.

The new location welcomes uswith a large patio, full of tablesequipped with bright red, Christostyle umbrellas. The amount ofgreen space separating the out-door seating area from the trafficcreates a sound buffer not typi-cally found in shopping centerrestaurants. Lurking overhead isthe same, brightly lit Berryhill signwe all know and love; but in thiscase, it's positioned on therounded corner facade of therestaurant, appearing as the en-trance to some sort of modern, grand castle.

The layout inside the main dining area resembles thecharm of the other restaurant locations. What sets this loca-tion apart from the rest is the use of space in the bar area.Swirling with dazzling colors and imagery, the space makesfor a perfect happy hour spot. Additionally, the amount andplacement of flat screens, makes it easy to comfortably catchsporting events from any table or bar top.

And if that wasn't enough, there's a semi-private loft-style spotabove the actual bar, complete with comfy, black leather sofas, acouple of flat screens, and a killer view through its panoramicwindow. More like an upscale club setting, this area will cater tolarger parties and casual get-togethers. Reservations are wel-comed, and there's no charge to use the space.

Owner Philip Wattel (who also owns Montrose and Baybrook lo-cations) jumped on the opportunity to open up a location in hisown backyard. Having fallen in love with the area when heopened up Baybrook, Wattel is a supporter of the Clear Lake boat-ing community and is a member of South Shore Harbour Marina.Logistically, the new location is at a perfect spot to deliver to caterto those docking at South Shore Harbour on hot summer days!

Dine-in specials at Berryhill include $1.99 award-winning fishtacos every Monday and 99-cent award-winning tamales on Tues-days and Thursdays. Weekend brunch is available until 3 p.m.,with $10 bottomless Mimosas; and breakfast is served every day.

Be sure to also try an award-winning Margarita, Bellini, or Screw-driver – all served with fresh-squeezed juice!

So, whether you're looking for a casual, patio setting for happyhour or restaurant service; or late night drinks and apps; or any-where in between, Berryhill will cater to your needs. Being asuper fan of the Original Fish Taco (Zagat rated as “Best Fish TacoEver”), this spectacular location fits my needs especially, both withregards to proximity and cool factor. Enjoy the same great foodand similar style; just on a grander scale and a perfect locale.

Find Berryhill Baja Grill's newest location at 2660 Marina BayDrive in League City. Check out the website at www.berryhillbajagrill.com and be-come a Bajamigoby following Berry-hill on Twitter(@BerryhillLOVE)and Facebook!
