Introductory Comments by Michael Holmes Introduction On April , , I received an e-mail rom Bob Buller, Editorial Director o the SBL Press, asking i I might be interested in editing a new edition o the Greek New estament. Te invitation w as so unexpected that the tho ught cros sed my mind that this might be some so rt o “April Fool’s” joke on Bob’s part. Any such suspicion was quickly dispelled, however, by the subsequent e-mail conversation that same day as I learned that the SBL, in keeping with its mission “to oster biblical scholarship,” had partnered with Logos Biblical Sofware to sponsor the creation o a reliable electronic text o the Greek New estament (GN) that would be, with respect to both price and licensing restrictions, reely and widely available or scholars and students to download and use, and was seeking an editor to implement their vision. Te initial SBL/Logos vision was to do a modern re-make o the original Nestle text—to compare a number o modern ed itions o the Greek New estament and where the y disagreed, to adopt the reading o a majority o them as the text o the new edition. I had little interest, however, in a merely mechanical editorial procedure, and afer some discussion proposed that a comparison o selected editions be utilized as a starting point or an editorial process that would produce a new, critically-established text that would (a) take into account as much o the available textual data and inormation as possible, (b) reﬂect developments and advances in the discipline’s understanding o the history o the text, and (c) be reely and widely available in electronic orm or scholars and students alike. Afer some weeks o urther discussion, consultation, and negotiation between mysel and the -person committee representing Logos and the SBL (which was represented by Bob Buller and Kent Richards), we came to agreement with respect to the vision or the project, and I accepted their invitation. Selecting the Editions A major topic o discussion during this time o consultation and negotiation was the matter o which editions to use as a basis or comparison. Te selection o our editions to serve as primary resources or establishing the new SBL edition—Westcott & Hort, regelles, Robin- son-Pierpont, and the Greek text behind the NIV translation—was based on a combination o considerations.
