A MAJOR business park planned for Sandbach has been earmarked as a priority in Cheshire East’s new Local Plan. The Capricorn Business Park, planned for a site off Old Mill Road, includes a 63-bedroom hotel, family pub, a drive-through cafe, offices and 250 houses. The development would involve some 130 acres on land off Junction 17 of the M6 and is expected to create ‘in excess of 770 jobs’. However concerns have been raised by local residents about the impact it would have on
the area’s traffic flow and on the general infrastructure in Sandbach. Cheshire East council has highlighted the project as one of the ‘strategic sites’ in the Local Plan, which was awaiting approval as we went to press. The consultation for the Plan has generated enough words to produce five volumes of War and Peace and has been almost six years in the making. Council leader Michael Jones said “This has been an incredible journey – and we’ve had to steer through some tricky diversions to get the best deal
for the people of Cheshire East.” Pictured is an artist’s impression of the development although certain elements are being
updated. Do you think the project is a good idea for Sandbach? Email [email protected].

SANDBACH Town Hall went back in time to the Tudor period last month for a fundraiser in aid of the Mayor’s Charity. The event included a banquet, Tudor fashion show and musical entertainment from Piva, a 15th century style group of musicians. With authentic instruments made by members of the group, including an English set of bagpipes, they provided authentic music that complimented the fashion show provided by Jenny Unsworth. Jenny also helped organise the event and provided an
informative commentary on each of the costumes from the various decades of the Tudor period. Her costumes have been used at various events for the National Trust and she tries to keep them as authentic as possible by looking at paintings from the period to get the details right. The event raised over £500 for the Mayor’s Charity. The next event for the Mayor’s Charity will be an afternoon cream tea at the Town Hall on March 22 at 3pm. Tickets are £5 on the door. DETECTIVES in Sandbach are investigating a high-value raid on a building society. At 6.35pm on Monday February 17 two security officers were delivering cash to the Nationwide Building Society in High Street. While inside the premises two men, armed with a sledgehammer, approached the building society and tried to gain entry via the front door. Both security officers managed to secure themselves behind a locked door − they were not injured during the incident. One of the offenders entered the building society and stole a cassette full of cash, described as a five-figue sum, from the ATM machine. The offenders then fled the scene in a black BMW, which was later found burned out in Church Street. An investigation has been launched and officers have been carrying out a number
of enquiries in the local area including CCTV enquiries, house-to-house enquiries and any relevant forensic leads. DS Jim Boulton said: "I am appealing to anyone who has any information, which could assist with our enquiries, to get in touch. “In particular I′m keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious on the night − the incident took place around tea time so there may well have been people in the area who were heading home from work and I would urge anyone who may have seen anything significant to contact us." The offenders were wearing dark clothing and balaclavas. Anyone with any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 771 of 17 February. People can also call Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

YOUNG entrepreneurs are thriving at Sandbach School through a special enterprise project. Ingenium – a company set up under the Young Enterprise scheme – has its headquarters at the school and has been operational since September. Its mission is to provide a variety of products from simple stationary sheets providing services for education, to a t-shirt range catering for the clothing sector, and a variety of seasonal products that change as the year goes on.
A spokesman said: “For the future we aim to continue to broaden the range of products we offer and are even working on a personalised revision guide for Geography to get professionally printed for use exclusively at Sandbach School.” Pictured are students Tom Oldham, James Cagna, George Farren, Tom MacCuish, Owen MacCuish, Charles Pointon and James McDowell with Alison Evans from the Neuromuscular Centre, which the project also supports.

A teenager has been sentenced for causing the death of two women by dangerous driving in Moston. Michael Gilligan, (pictured)of Nantwich Road, Wimboldsley, was jailed for six years. He was also disqualified from driving for seven years. The 19-year-old was sentenced at Chester Crown Court after pleading guilty at a previous hearing. The incident took place late on June 18 last year. The victims − Christine Coates, aged 75 years, and Barbara Lea, aged 79 − were travelling together in a Honda Jazz along the A533 Booth Lane at Moston heading towards Sandbach. Gilligan was driving a black
Vauxhall Astra and was shown to be on the wrong side of the road as he entered a bend colliding with their car. At the time he was travelling at
over 50 mph. The families of both victims issued a joint statement saying: “There are no winners in this case, only losers. “Both families have lost our mothers and grandmothers in the
most tragic yet preventable circumstances while Michael Gilligan (a young man) has lost a significant proportion of his life as he begins his lengthy prison sentence. “No sentence will reflect the pain and devastation felt by both families. “Not one day passes where we don′t think of this collision.”

SANDBACH Town Hall officially opened last month after a long period of closure for refurbishments. The opening was launched with a poem performed by Town Crier Denis Robinson about the new facilities.
Town Mayor Mike Benson also spoke about the history of the building, which dates back to 1889. The ribbon was then cut for the public to enter with the Mayor opening the door to what is hoped will be a popular venue for entertainement leisure and community use.
CEREMONY: Civic leaders took a tour of the new town hall facilities

SANDBACH Folk Club welcomes the Jaywalkers to the Market Tavern on March 18. The gifted trio have been described as one of the most exciting, virtuosic and entertaining young bands working on the British folk scene. They have shown plenty of promise being finalists in the BBC Young Folk Awards. Their second album – Early For A Thursday – was well received earning them a string of high level festival appearances.
The band’s upbeat mixture of bluegrass and traditional folk has taken them from the farthest reaches of northern Scotland to the southern tip of Swanage. The band met at a weekly bluegrass jam session in Helsby and played together in a variety of scratch bands for several years, before Mike and Jay formed Jaywalkers in the summer of 2008 Following the self-release of their highly successful debut
album ‘16 Miles’ – the duo became a trio with the addition of bass player extraordinaire, Lucy Williams. The album features nine of mandolin player, Michael Giverin’s original compositions that draw on his musicality and Northern heritage. The Folk Club meets every Tuesday at 8.45pm. The club will host a Singer’s Night on March 25 and April 1 and a performance by Pete Ryder on April 8.

SANDBACH student Rowan Cheshire has spoken of her disappointment after being ruled out of competing in the Olympic women’s ski halfpipe in Sochi. The decision was made by Cheshire, Team GB chief medical officer Niall Elliott and coach Pat Sharples after she suffered concussion during training. Rowan said: “I am hugely disappointed. “I felt as though I was coming into my best form of the season and had my tricks nailed. “I am very grateful for the amazing support I have had from the Team GB medical team and of course my coach
Pat Sharples. “After experiencing what it is like to be at an Olympic Games I am determined to be back in four years time and be up there competing for an Olympic medal. “I cannot express how grateful I am for all the get well messages and support I have had.” Coach Pat Sharples also backed the 18-year old to challenge for the medals in four years, after she became the first British woman skier in 22 years to win a World Cup event. He said: “Rowan has a bright future ahead of her. I have no doubt she will back in four years time more determined than ever.”

SANDBACH RUFC boss Stuart Battersby has said the team is optimistic for a strong finish to the season. Looking at the run-in to what has been a difficult season, he said he hoped they would avoid the drop. At the moment the club is in a battle with three or four other
sides to avoid falling into the bottom three of SSE National League 3 Midlands. Stuart said: “We have some very winnable matches coming up so we are remaining postive. “We have a run of four home matches in a row coming up and that is important to us.
“We have been lucky in that our pitch holds up very well. “And playing at home suits our style of play - it is a hard pitch and we like to play it out of the backs as opposed to some sides who like to stuff it up their jumpers.” Stuart also welcomed the return of experienced prop
Gareth Caen, while saying a number of younger players have stepped up well to bolster the forward line. Stuart also applauded the efforts of former players Matthew Beesley and Will Cargill, who have both recently moved up a league to new clubs
