Jesse Green: For people listening Glen is really, really well known in the entrepreneurial space, doing some massive things with Dent, making big waves around the world, Australia of course, UK, America, Singapore, global offices everywhere. Mate can you just give us a bit of a background about how Dent came about, what is the story there? Glen Carlson: It was interesting because we just went through a bit of a rebrand to Dent actually. I’ll go back maybe a decade and a half. My business partner Daniel, our first company was an events and promotions business. We started that when we were about 22 in Melbourne and we expanded pretty quickly. We kind of grew to running about 150 events a year. We did a million our first year, 10 million in our third and we got very

goodatpositioningauthors,speakers,entrepreneursintheirindustry.AsthatkindofscaledaroundAustraliaandthenweexpandedtotheUKwestartedtogetreallyclearthatitwas…Firstofallourstandardwaswe’donlypromotepeoplethatweregreatatwhattheydid,hadagreattrackrecord,theyhadacohortofclientsthatwerestrongreferrers,wellestablishedintheirgame.

Whatwefoundisthatforsomeofthosepeopleitwasreallyeasytopullacrowd.WhenIsaypullacrowdI’mtalkingwe’doftenputthousandsofpeopleintoconferencecentersandallthatkindofstuffandforsomepeopleitwasreallyhardtopullacrowd.Tocutalongstoryshort,startedreverseengineeringwhatmadethedifferencewhenitcametoattractingtheattentionofanaudienceoracrowdoramarketbasedonapersonalbrandoranindividual.ThelongstoryshortisthatthatbecamethemethodologythatDanputintohisfirstbook,BecomeaKeyPersonofInfluence,Danmybusinesspartnerwhicharethese5steps.

Wefoundthatdespitebeinggreatatwhatsomeonedidiftheydidn’thaveagreatpitch,iftheycouldn’tcommunicatetheirvalue,capturetheattentionofthemarket,iftheydidn’thavecredibilitythroughpublishedcontent,iftheydidn’thavescalableproducts,iftheydidn’thaveastrongprofileandiftheyweren’talreadywellestablishedwithjointventures,alliances,partnerships,visibleassociationswithexistingleadersitwashardtopullacrowd.Iftheydidhavethosethingsitwaseasytopullacrowd.

Whatbecameinterestingiswestartedturningthatintoaproductitself.Wehadalotofpeopletellingusthatthoseinsightsweremakingabigdifferenceforthemandwedecidedtoformalizeitabout6yearsago.DanandIdidn’twanttobethegurus,ourgoalhasalwaysbeentoneverbethesmartestpeopleintheroomwhichiswhywelikedpromotingthesekindofsuccessfulauthorsandspeakersbecausewewantedtobesurroundedbypeoplemoresuccessfulthanus.Webroughtinmenandwomenthathadbuiltglobalbilliondollarbusinessesandbrands,highnetworthentrepreneursandleaders,highlyrespectedtokindofworkwithclientsandparticipantsineachofthosethings,ineachofthoseelementsandthatjusttookoffintheUK.

5yearsagoIbroughtthatheretoAustraliaandwereallydidn’tknowwhatitwasgoingtobecomebutwitharealcommitmenttofocusingonimprovingtheproductmorethanjustbuildingthemostprofitablethingwecouldearlieron.Wewentreallydeepintomakingsurethatitwasavaluableandapowerfulandatransformationalprocessforbusinessownersandentrepreneurs.It’ssincebecomerecognizedintheglobalmediaastheworld’sleadingbusinessacceleratorandit’slike…Fornon-techbusinessestobefair,notcompetingwiththeSiliconValleytechincubatorsoranyofthatsortofstuffbutforyourtraditionaldentist,realestateagents,lawyers,doctors,financialplanners,anyoneinthatservicespace,thatpeoplehelpingspace.

DanandIhadalwayslovedthenameDent;wewantedtodosomethingwiththewordDentbecausewefeellikewe’rebreathingtomakeadentintheuniversesomehowandourfearoffailureisprobablydrivingustowanttodosomethingmeaningfulintheworld.ThatbecamewhatwedecidedwouldbeapowerfulumbrellabrandfornotjustTheKeyPersonofInfluenceacceleratorbutanythingelsethatwechoosetorollout,yeah.That’skindoftheshortstoryofit.Whatdidthattake,15minutes?

JesseGreen: Yeah,wellthat’sallright,that’scoolmate.WhatI’mreallyinterestedtoknow,there’ssomanythingsthatIwouldliketopickupbutthere’ssomegreatthreadsintherealready.Youspokeabouttheservicebasedindustryorservicebasedbusinesses,dentists,doctors,lawyersandsoonandthere’sgoingtobealotofdentistsobviouslylisteningtothispodcastsgoingwellthat5steparchitecturesoundsreallycoolbuthowdoItakethat,howdoImakeitpracticalandallwithoutkindofgoingthroughthefiveP’sonebyone.

ThethingI’mreallyinterestedaboutisbecausedentistryisgoingthroughastructuralchange,it’sgoingthroughsomemajorupheaval,I’velongheldaviewthatthepracticesandthebusinessesthatsucceedoverthenext,particularly5to10yearsandbeyondaregoingtobetheonesthatreallycombineexcellenthealthcarewithfantasticentrepreneurialthinkingandentrepreneurialmindsetandsoon.What’syourthoughtsaroundtheentrepreneurialmindsetascomparedtosayatraditionalbusinessesowner’smindset?Wheredoyouseethedifferenceslyingandwhatwouldbethesignificantpointsthere?

GlenCarlson: Yeah.Thisgetstrickybecauseitstartsgoingintoasortofsemantics.WhenIthinkofanentrepreneurIthinkofthecharacteristicsofsomeonewhoishyper-resourceful,thinksoutsidetheboxandjustkicksthegoddamndoordownuntiltheyfindtheresult.Ifyoulookat…Let’sjustgotraditionalconservativemumanddadfishandchipowner,fishandchipshopownerkindofbusinesswherereallythey’vebeeninbusinessfor20yearsbutthey’verepeatedthesameyear20times.They’redrawingfromtheirexperiencesofthepastofhowtodothingsandthey’reprojectingthatintothefuture.They’remakingdecisionsaboutthefuturebasedontheirexperienceofthepast,right?Ifwe’regoingtotalkaboutalowbrow,lowsophisticationkindofbusinessowner…Becausethisiswhysemanticsareimportantbecausetherearesomehardcorebusinessowners,right?

JesseGreen: Thereabsolutely,yeah.

GlenCarlson: Let’sjustsaylikelowmindsetbusinessownersorentrepreneursisthatfishandchipshopasopposedtothiskindofotherwayofgoingaboutitwhereyousitthereandyoupickapointintimeinthefutureandyougohowdowewantthattobe?Amancouldputamanonthemoonbloody50yearsago,whateveritwas,ifwecandothatwecanrebuildourdentistrypractice,wecanrebuildourrealestateagency,wecanrebuildwhateverwewantevenifitishypercompetitive.ThethinkingandIthinktheanswertoyourquestionisthatarealentrepreneurseessomethingoutinthefutureandinsteadofforwardprojectingallthelimitationsandlackofresourcesfromtheircurrentdayinthepasttheyjustgolookwhatdowewanttogetdoneandthenwhatarethesignificantproblemsthatwehavetosolveinordertoactuallygetthatdone,

Ithinkthat’sthekeydifference,isthatentrepreneursaretheonesthatarereverseengineeringthefuturewherethetraditionalbusinessownersthatarestrugglingaretheonesthatarejustprojectingthepastandhistoryisrepeatingitselfforthem.

JesseGreen: Yeah,lookIthinkthat’safabulousanswerGlenbecausewhatweseeinthedentalspaceaswellisthere’ssomanyguyshopingthattimeswillgobacktothewaytheywereandfranklythey’renotandreallyinmyviewit’sabitofasinkorswimkindofscenarioformanydentists.They’reeithergoingtohavetogetonboardwithanentrepreneurialthinkingasyou’vedescribedittolookforwardtothefutureasopposedtorepeatingthesameyear20timesandIthinkbeingabletoreverseengineerthatandberesilientandresourcefulisgoingtobecritical.

Intermsofthethingsthatyoudowithyourbusiness,youspokeaboutgrowingofficesaroundtheworldandalltherestofitandoneofthechallengesthatIgetaskedabouteverysingleday,ifnoteverydayatleasteveryotherdayisaboutcreatingamoreleveraged,amorescaledbusiness.Thisissomethingyou’vedoneobviouslyaroundtheworld,whatlessonsarecomingoutforyouasyou’vedonethat?Wasthereapointintimewhenyouthoughtifwescalenowit’snotgoingtoberight,whatdidyouneedtohaveinplacebeforeyouscaledandwhat’sthetippingpoint?

GlenCarlson: IthinktheluckiestthingformewasthatIdon’t…Ididn’tandstilldon’thaveanyideawhatI’mdoingandIabsolutelyI’mnotqualifiedtobeabletodelivertheresultsthatI’msellingtomyclientswhichbasicallysaysIcan’tpersonallydeliveronmypromises.

GlenCarlson: YetIdo,right.Thiswastheluckything,isthatIwas…Thisiswhereifyou’readentistandyou’relisteningtothisandyou’reagreatdentistthat’sactuallyyourbiggestorpotentiallyyourbiggestliabilityintermsofmindset.Becausetheproblemisthatifyoucandothegreatworkyourself,you’llhaveatendencytodothegreatworkyourselfandthatobviouslystrapsyouintoanunscalablebusinessmodelwhereyoudon’thavethetimetogetupandsolvetheproblemslikethefactthatyourindustryisnowhighlycompetitiveandthere’saninsurgeofnewplayersandallthedifferentstructuralshiftsthatyou’retalkingabout.

JustthethoughtexperimentthatcamenaturallytomebecauseI…WhenwelaunchedtheKPIprogramneitherDannorIwerecapableorqualifiedtobeabletoworkwithourclientsonimprovingtheirpitchorhelpingthemturntheirservicebusinessesintoscalableproductbusinessesoranythinglikethat.Wehadtobringinpeopleandmakeitpartofourofferingthatotherpeopledeliveredthosekeyelementstothepointwherewecouldn’tgetinvolved.Thatsimplesituation…IfyouthinkofElonMusk,hesellselectriccarsbuthecan’tdeliveruponanelectriccarpersonallyheneedsanentireteamofpeoplecomingtogethertodothat.Ithinkformeintheearlydayswhatallowedustoscalewasthefactthatwenevertriedtoputourselvesintoproductinthefirstplace.

ThebeautyofanydentistlisteningisthatyouhaveasIdidenoughexperiencetobeabletocurateyourcustomers’journeyandyourcustomers’experienceandguidethemtoafantasticoutcomeandaresultsolongasyou’vegotthatperspective.I’m

JesseGreen: Thatis…Foranyonelisteningthatisjustabsolutegoldthere.Iguesscomingbacktothat,justtotalkaboutthatevenfurtherGlenit’saboutknowingyouraudienceandreallywhatkeepsthemawakeatnight,whatmakesthemtickandsoonandsoforth,yeah?

GlenCarlson: Absolutely.Oneofthekindofmaximsthatwehaveisyou’vegottohaveaPhDinyourcustomers’problems.Theonlyreasonpeoplebuyanythingistosolveaproblemandsothereforeyourvalueintheworldisdirectlycorrelatedtoyourabilitytosolveproblems.Indentistrytheproblemsthatagreatdentistandagreatteamofdentists,apracticecansolveissomuchbeyondarootcanal,it’ssomuchbeyondtheaesthetics.There’ssuchamassivehealthimpactthathappensasaresultofthehealth,youroralhygiene,youroralhealth,howthatworksbutmostpeoplehavenoidea.They’resofewdentiststhatareactuallyleveragingthefullimpactofthelifechangingeffectsthatsimpleoralhealthandhygienecanhave,right?

Thatjusttellsmethatalotofdentistsarejustdoingwhattheyhavedoneinthepastwithteeth.They’renotandeveniftheyareattheleadingedgeofscienceintermsofhowbiganimpactthestuffthatgoesoninyourmouthandyourjawandallthatsortofstuffhappenstoeverythingelseinyoursystem,they’renotleveragingit.Becausedentistsarestillseenasdentistsratherthanahealth,aholistichealthproviderandIthinkthatisashift,ifyou’reabletoreallydigdeepintothewideexpanseofproblemsthatyourcustomersareexperiencingwhentheywalkinthedoorthatisahugeopportunitytobeabletoproductextend,brandextend,createpartnershipsandalliancessoyou’reabletocreateamuchmorevaluableoffering,amuchmorecompletesolutiontowhatthecustomerneeds.

There’sgoingtobeacoupleofbigbrandsinthedentistryspacethatdoitIbelievewherethey’regoingtostart…Peoplearegoingtostartgoingtothedentistinthesame,insteadofgoingtoanaturopathoraGPorsomethingalongthoselinesbecauseit’sgoingtobethisintegratedsolutionwhichstartswiththefoundationwhichisthemouth.

Asyoudostarttogrowthelevelofcomplexityinsideyourorganizationgoesupandthatrequiresyourintention.Literallyasyougrowyourfocusneedstoshiftfromdeliveringremarkablevaluetoactuallymakingsureyou’redealingwithsomeoftheproblemsthatyourorganization’shavingasitstartstogrow.Itreallyisimportanttorollyourselfoutofthedeliveryofthatcompleteremarkablesolutionveryearlyonoryou’rejustnevergoingtogetoutofthatkindoffirststep.

GlenCarlson: FirstofallIdon’tthinkthatscalingisgoodnecessarily.Growthforthesakeofgrowthiscancer.Ifthereisn’tagoodreasontogrow,ifyou’vegotagreatbusinessatwhateverlevelyou’reatthatyou’rereallyhappywith,it’stakingallyouremotionalneeds,yourlifestyleneeds,yourcontributionandcharitableneeds…
