RABBI'S MESSAGEby RABBI MICHAEL SAFRA

It is no accident that the Passover seder is the most celebrated of all Jewish rituals. The 18th-century Hasidic master Rabbi Yehudah Leib Alter of Ger, known by his work as Sefat Emet (Language of Truth) teaches that the story of the Exodus goes on forever. “In the act of telling about the Exodus,” he writes, “the miracle itself is continually fulfilled and enhanced.”1 His interpretation stems from the Haggadah’s central directive: “Even if we were all wise, all discerning, all-knowing the entire Torah, it would still be a commandment to tell the story of the Exodus from Egypt; and anyone who expands on the story is deemed praiseworthy.” The Rabbis took the imperative to expand the story literally. There weren’t just Ten Plagues, they say. There were ten plagues in Egypt, brought about by the “finger of God” (Exodus 8:15). The “hand of God” (Exodus 14:31) redeemed the people at the Red Sea, so simple math would suggest 50 more plagues there (10 plagues x 5 fingers). Drawing on a verse from Psalm 78, “God inflicted his burning anger upon them, wrath, indignation, trouble, a band of deadly messengers, they multiply the plagues by four or five (it depends on if you consider the phrase “burning anger” in your count of multipliers). The intention was never to read these passages as a liturgy, but rather to be inspired by the Rabbis’ drive for expansion. The historical details are not as important as its enduring relevance. What does the Exodus teach us about the importance of Jewish identity, God’s power, the manifestation of the Divine Presence in our own lives, our mandate to redeemed other enslaved peoples in our midst?

We must think about this question every year as we prepare to host or attend the seder. The most important question is not, “When do we eat?” but rather, “Which part of Redemption remains incomplete?” The ancient Rabbis ended the seder with a prayer, “Next year in Jerusalem,” signifying their belief that Redmption would be complete with only when the Romans were defeated.

For many of us, the displaced refugees at our southern border, fleeing danger and being forced into homelessness, detention or worse, become today’s version of the Israelite slaves. Others look inward at our own community—on Passover we celebrate the formation of Jewish peoplehood and covenant while knowing that many contemporary Jews walk away from that covenant, deeming it irrelevant. Still others ask if we celebrate Passover as the freest, most secure generation of Jewish history, or if the rising tide of antisemitism threatens to bring us back to the time when we were the enslaved victims of history. Any one of these issues is worthy of discussion at your Passover seder. Daniel Ratner will be considering these and other questions during his session, “The Lamb and the Lambourghini,” during Shabbat services on April 13. This session is part of a larger ShMA (Shabbat Morning Alternatives) initiative to expand opportunities for connection during Shabbat (see page 6 for more information). I invite you also to check out interesting seder resources at JewBelong.com, as well as historical and other information at MyJewishLearning.com. Students in our Talmud Torah will participate in special Passover workshops on Sunday, April 14. The Sisterhood Judaica Shop carries several interpretive haggadot that are sure to enhance your seder as well. And there are so many other resources out there. When our seder guests ask what they can bring, I tell them to bring ideas, curiosity, and a willingness to engage. Together, we can expand the discourse to bring relevance and meaning to our Festival of Freedom. Sharon, Rebecca, Ethan, Gila and I wish our entire community a Hag Kasher vSameah, a joyous and meaningful holiday.

As we celebrate our successes, we are grateful for the commitment and generosity of those who came before us. Dues and annual donations do not provide sufficient resources for all we must do to sustain Jewish life at B’nai Israel. And so we invite and encourage you to create your own legacy.

It is so easy to make a planned gift or bequest through B’nai Israel’s Create a Jewish Legacy Program. Simply include B’nai Israel in your estate planning as a beneficiary in your will, under your retirement plan or life insurance policy. It carries no financial obligation in the present, but it will have a huge and lasting impact on our future.

LEADERSHIP MESSAGEby JOSHUA SCHONFELDVice President Development

As I approach the end of my term as Vice President of Development, I have been reflecting on what we have accomplished. As a congregation, we have been undergoing significant changes over the last two years. Rabbi Safra became our Senior Rabbi and we have welcomed Rabbi Berkowitz to our congregation. Soon we will have a new Cantor, as Cantor Wolpert moves west to be closer to her family. Under Marla Schulman’s leadership, we have restructured our Board of Governors. We have also implemented a new approach to fundraising during this time period.

Two years ago, when asked to lead this effort, I did so with a few goals in mind. First, we would stop asking our members for money multiple times a year. Second, we would stop holding costly events that had a low return on investment. Third, we would start thinking about increasing the size of our endowment. All of this would put us on a path towards B’nai Israel’s 100th anniversary in 2025. As I took over this portfolio, in August 2017, I sat down to discuss all of this with David Stein. He too had been thinking about many of these same issues. David was also very interested in restructuring Membership as well as fundraising. Together we mapped out a way to approach these issues. During the fall of 2017 and the spring of 2018, we convened several Development Strategy Committee meetings to cultivate a new approach to fundraising at B’nai Israel. We presented our ideas to the board that spring. Rabbi Safra and Marla Schulman were supportive of our approach.

This past year, we have implemented the first phase of this transformation. We instituted

a “single-ask” campaign. We eliminated many of the smaller requests for funds and focused on the Hineini Campaign. This past fall, Rabbi Safra, Marla Schulman, Deedee Jacobson, Steve Rothenberg, Hal Ossman, Allison Karasik, Avi Friedman, David Stein and I worked together on the most successful Hineini Campaign in our history. We increased the amount raised and the participation level—by significant amounts. Our goal was to ask less—and spend more time on building relationships with our members. I am excited and proud for what we have accomplished. It was a true team effort. We appreciate all who donated to this year’s campaign. Our “thank you” event for those who participated in the campaign will be on May 20th.

The next phase of this process will be to continue this level of enthusiastic participation in the campaign and to rethink the concept of annual membership. Another important step will be strategizing along the lines of what I call the university model. Universities build multi-generational relationships with their alumni. They build significant endowments (or other creative approaches to development) to create an increasing base level of funding for their institutions. The Schnitzer Endowment was one step in this direction—but I believe we must do more. These issues are not unique to B’nai Israel. Congregations and other Jewish institutions across the country are experimenting with new ways to combine philanthropy with membership. Many models are out there.

As our congregation approaches its 100th anniversary, we have a long history to be proud of. That said, we also must take steps now to ensure that future generations will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of this wonderful institution. I am confident we have started on the correct path and that we are up to this challenge.

In the coming year, it is my hope that the incoming executive committee and our congregation, under Steve Rothenberg’s leadership, will explore how we might implement different approaches to membership and philanthropy that will appeal to succeeding generations (such as Millennials and Generation Z).

Thank you for your support over these last two years and for allowing me to assist our congregation.

OFFICIAL 2019 SLATE OF OFFICERS & BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Results of the Congregational Vote

on Reducing the Size of the B’nai Israel

Board of Governors

At the Special Meeting of the Congregation held on Wednesday, January 23rd, the congregation voted to approve the proposed changes to the B’nai Israel Constitution to reduce the size of the Board of Governors.

As a result, over the next few years the size of the Board will transition from approximately 99 members to 43 members. In addition, a Leadership Advisory Council has been established, comprising Past Presidents of the Congregation, Honorary Members who have served 18 years on the Board of Governors, and the Executive Committee. This new governance structure will provide for more efficient and effective lay leadership of the congregation.

The first slate of officers and new BOG members elected to the newly restructured Board will be voted on at the Congregational Annual Meeting, which will be held Sunday morning May 19th at 11:15 a.m. And, a special dinner will be held in June for the Leadership Advisory Council to honor the outgoing members and thank them for their many years of service on the Board of Governors.

The Nominating Committee has forwarded the Official Slate to Hal Ossman, Executive Director, and the election of B’nai Israel’s Officers, Board of Governors, and Trustee will take place at our Annual Meeting. According to Article XI, Section 4 of the Constitution, “Nominations by members of the Congregation at large may be submitted in writing to the Executive Director. Each nomination must be seconded in writing by no less than fifteen (15) members in good standing, and must also include a written statement from the nominee that, if elected, he agrees to serve in the capacity for which nominated. All such nominations by petition must be in the hands of the Executive Director no later than April 15."

PASSOVER at B’nai Israel

PASSOVERHOSPITALITYDo you have extra spaces at your seder table? Are you or is someone you know looking for a seder? If so, please contact Rabbi Berkowitz's office (301-816-5575). We will make every effort to arrange hospitality.

The synagogue offices will close at noon on Friday, April 19 and remain closed on Sunday,

April 21 for Pesah.

The synagogue offices will close at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 and remain closed on Friday, April 26 for the

conclusion of Pesah.

Siyyum Bekhorim—Siyyum for the First-BornOn Friday morning, April 19, all first-borns are urged to join the Siyyum Bekhorim following the 7:15 AM minyan. This observance reminds us that when the first-born of Egypt were slain during the Tenth Plague, the Israelite first-born were saved. In appreciation for this redemption, it is incumbent upon first-born Jewish males to fast on the day before Pesah. This responsibility is nullified when one celebrates the completion of text study.

Rabbi Berkowitz’s Shabbat Afternoon Talmud class will celebrate the completion of the tractate Rosh Hashanah, which they have been studying for more than a year. There will be a brief teaching about the end of the tractate, followed by a Seudat Mitzvah, a celebratory meal provided through the generosity of Micki and Lowell Gordon which nullifies the obligation for first-borns to fast on the eve of Passover.

B’dikat Hametz—The Search for Hametz , and Bi ’ur Hametz—Burning HametzThe search for leavened bread takes place on Thursday evening, April 18, after sunset. Members of the family, equipped with a lighted candle, go from room to room gathering crumbs of bread to ensure that the house has been cleansed of all hametz. Many families have a custom of hiding pieces of bread in order to guarantee that something may be found.

Special b’dikat hametz sets (including a feather, spoon, candle, and instructions) are available from the Sisterhood Judaica Shop. Hametz is to be destroyed by 10:57 AM on Friday, April 19. No hametz is to be consumed after that time, for the duration of the holiday.

Mekhirat Hametz—Selling of HametzIf one cannot completely remove all hametz from the home during Pesah, Jewish law provides for the conditional sale of hametz to a non-Jew during Pesah. Upon the conclusion of Pesah, the hametz reverts to its original owner.

It is customary to make a contribution for ma’ot hittin, providing Pesah food for the needy, when selling hametz. Please return the form on page 23 by Thursday, April 18, in order to sell your hametz. Hametz will be repurchased at the conclusion of Pesah on Saturday evening, April 27.

The Rabbinical Assembly PESAH GUIDE 5779 is now available.Pick up your copy on the Shabbat table, you download it at (www.bnaiisraelcong.org/pesah).

If you would like a copy mailed to you, please call Rabbi Berkowitz (301-816-5575).

EARLY CHILDHOODby KAREN GERTONDirector

An exciting part of my job is to meet with prospective parents and show them our wonderful school. Often asked about our pedagogy, I explain that we adhere to a variety of early childhood theories. Over the past few years, we have looked closely at the work of schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Providing a basis for meaningful and engaging learning with young children, its foundations are rooted in the practices of our most influential early childhood theorists. Drawing from Constructivists, it views children as active constructors of knowledge. Children actively participate, explore and question, empowering them, igniting curiosity and developing a strong love of learning. Teachers are guides to the learning, facilitating activities designed to develop the children’s skills.

Even our very young students are capable of guiding their learning. In Gan Harim, our Three Day Twos class, a cell phone was accidentally left out. Two curious children discovered the phone and started

taking pictures of items in the classroom; then they started taking selfies. The sound of their laughter sparked others' interest, and soon all the children joined in the fun. Our intuitive teachers identified an interest and created an environment that allowed the children to explore and learn. Gan Harim’s special interest in photography was born! Since many young children of today have no “exposure” to real cameras, the teachers seized the opportunity to provide a new experience for them. “What is a camera?” they asked. Each child held and examined a real camera. Responding to the question “What does a camera do?” one child said, “It takes pictures.” Another explained, “First you point it here and then you point it there.” The teachers helped the children open the bottom and wondered “What is happening in here?” “These are Batteries;” a child told her friends. Making a connection another exclaimed “Batteries make things work. But my tablet doesn’t have batteries, it has a plug.” Based on prior experience, a student explained, “You need batteries to make it go.”

Over a couple days, the children practiced figuring out which way the batteries needed to go in to make the camera make a ringing sound. They discovered that when they heard the ringing sound it meant the camera was ready to take a picture. Each child had many turns pushing the buttons until they were skillful at taking a picture. This gave them the opportunity to feel competent.

Extending the learning, the teachers showed the children photo paper and had them feel the difference between the glossy, smooth

Amelia: “I took my picture of the tree on the playground because it has shiny leaves.”

Chloe took a picture of Milo because they like to build together.

paper and regular paper. They identified properties, an important skill for classifying. Using fine motor skills, the children made colorful tissue paper art on the photo paper. Everywhere they went the class brought the camera with them. Each child found something they really wanted to remember and took a picture of it to keep it forever.

This study was rich in learning through a media that excited the children. Teachers skillfully guided the learning incorporating important opportunities to extend and develop skills. Curious children practiced language, social and motor proficiencies through their work. Competence and creativity abounded as the final pictures on display demonstrate.

"Each child found something they really wanted to remember and took a picture of it to keep forever."

Last August I was invited to join the first Jewish educators’ cohort to take part in a certificate for SECD (Social Emotional Character Development) offered by Rutgers University Department of Applied Psychology. The invitation came through a joint venture between JTS (Conservative), URJ (Reform), and the Reconstructionist movement. Five students were matched with a team of professors, with the goal of developing professional development and curricula resources for a social emotional approach.

Having spent several years working with a professor at JTS, I wasn’t new to the field. But the teaching techniques, skills and psychology that I learned have given me a richer understanding of the impact of listening carefully to our students needs as we guide them through their Jewish education. Community, the classroom environment, character development, values, and the quest for personal meaning, all have powerful and rewarding impacts on our educational goals.

For the last part of this year-long study, I am required to create a practicum that will impact our teachers training or the classroom. I chose to work with our third grade students.

At the beginning of the school year, we initiated a new approach to in-school prayer services. We looked carefully at how students responded to our traditional service and determined that students needed their own child-friendly space. We took the Glazer-Wachtel Youth Lounge, emptied the furniture, and added rugs on the floor. We then began a process of talking with our K-6th grade about prayer. We asked why do we pray? How do we pray? What are we saying when we pray? How we can pray with meaning? From this, we experimented with different prayer melodies or “nusach” to see whether our students could identify mood through music. We chose art for expressing feeling as we listened to various versions of Oseh Shalom.

Building on research by a fellow Brit, Rabbi Michael Shire, I have developed twelve sessions for third grade, which will take place on Tuesdays during our weekly tefilah time. We will explore God, spirituality, and prayer. During our first few sessions, we spoke about our own personal view of God and how prayer can mirror our belief and help us explore a personal relationship with God. The remaining session will explore the senses, spirituality, and mindfulness.

I hope that by the end of this school year, our third grade—and, also our other students—will have a deeper understanding of personal and communal prayer, and a greater appreciation for prayer Hebrew and its unique place in their lives.

My first B’nai Israel Purim carnival was definitely one to remember, and I am so happy that I got to be a part of such a fun evening filled with so many amazing costumes, delicious hamentashen, fun games, awesome prizes, and so many smiles! I want to thank everyone who helped make this event happen, including the many volunteers and staff who made sure that everything was ready to go. I also want to thank all of you for attending and making my first B’nai Israel Purim Carnival a truly amazing experience. I look forward too many more Purim carnivals in the future.

Now that Purim has come and gone, we are preparing for Passover. Passover for me is a time to be with family and friends. I associate this holiday with happy memories, such as traveling to visit family in other states, spending my first Passover in Jerusalem last year, and traveling abroad with my friends a few years ago. I look forward to this Passover in my new home with my B’nai Israel community.

We have a lot of exciting events happening during the Passover season including “Kadima Master Chef: Passover Dessert Edition.” This event is sure to be a fun afternoon of cooking up new and exciting Pesach treats. The Family Pesach experience will be on Friday morning, April 27. It will include fun activities and games, and a service for kids in grades K–6.

During Passover it is also important to think of our B’nai Israel college community. Please make sure we have updated information for your college student so that they receive an awesome gift during Passover. If you are in

college and need assistance finding a Seder on campus, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Some other events to mark on your calendar for this month are Bonim’s “Planting and Decorating: Spring Has Sprung,” Machar’s “Trip to Adventure Park USA,” and of course the always popular Seaboard region Kings Dominion Day for Kadima and USY.

I look forward to seeing all of you around during this exciting month!

HINEINI Art Project

In October, B’nai Israel USY, Kadima, and Talmud Torah held an art workshop following a day of learning. We worked with artist Hillel Smith, to create something that exemplifies our teens' sense of spirituality. The word ippd “Hineni" was chosen as the main theme of this project. Hineni means “Here I am” and refers to occasions in the Torah when God calls upon Adam, Abraham and Moses, and asks them “Where are you?” Understood literally, it’s a nonsensical question because we believe that God is all knowing.

Many scholars interpret this question not as one asking for a geographical location but rather as God asking: Where are you in your moral decision making?

The answer “Hineni” means: “Here I am, ready and waiting to do Your will. Here I am, a partner with You in the eternal covenant between You and our people. How can I fulfill my role more fully?”

Hillel handed each participant a screen with an outline in pencil of where the letters would be present, and invited them to decorate an abstract concept in dark and light colors. Once complete, like a puzzle piece, he joined them together to create the art displayed on this wall.

We hope you will enjoy and cherish this beautiful work of art created for you, the observer.

ISRAEL CORNERby TAMAR SOMMERCongregational Shlicha

The Israeli emissary program is made possible by a partnership between B'nai Israel and the Federation of Greater Washington.

The greatest stories are told in a circle, when the story teller is not afraid to show vulnerability. Real life stories are the ones that catch my attention the most. There is something ancient about story telling: That is how our ancestors communicated our Jewish values, practices, and narratives.

This year, we have an opportunity to remember the Holocaust in a different way. Zikaron BaSalon (Hebrew for “memories in the living room”) is an annual worldwide event that started in Israel, which takes place on Yom HaShoah. The idea was born from the realization that we have seen a significant deterioration in the connection between Israeli society today and the collective Israeli memory of the Holocaust.

This program offers a new, meaningful, and intimate way to commemorate this day and address its implications through discussions at home among family, friends, and guests. It is a unique and authentic tradition of people gathering together to open their hearts to the stories of the survivors, sing, think, read, talk and most importantly, listen.

Zikaron BaSalon will be held on the evening of Wednesday, May 1st. We have four different locations that are suitable for different ages: families, adults, and young professionals. Each location (living room) will host a survivor, or a family member of a survivor, to tell their story of the Holocaust. This is a unique opportunity to listen to these brave people.

For more information, go to www.

zikaronbasalon.org/ or send me email ([email protected]). If you would like to host a Zikaron BaSalon event, go to www.bnaiisraelcong.org/zikaronbasalon.

Zikaron BaSalon invites you to commemorate the Holocaust in a personal way, among friends, family and guests, in an intimate atmosphere. Join 500,000 Zikaron BaSalon hosts and participants.

HINEINI thank you event

MONDAY EVENING, MAY 20with entertainment by

JESSICA KIRSONPlease join us for our Hineini Thank You evening event, a free celebration for everyone who contributed to this year's campaign.

If you have not participated in Hineini, there is still time! Visit www.bnaiisraelcong.org/hineini to contribute at any level and secure your place. Seating will be unassigned, and refreshments will be served.

Watch for more information in April.

In an era where only 10% of all touring comedians are

female, Jessica stands out as one of the strongest comedians regardless of gender. As her friend Dave Attell says, “I’d hate to follow her.”

This year, Jessica will be featured playing herself

on the HBO series Crashing w i th Pe t e Ho lmes . She

recently served as a consultant, producer and writer as well as

acted in the Robert De Niro’s film “The Comedian.” She has appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon”, “The View, and “Kevin Can Wait.”

She was recently awarded “Best Female Comic” by the MAC association in New York City and received the prestigious Nightlife Award for “Best Stand-up Comedian.” And in her spare time, Jessica is a regular contributor to the “Howard Stern Show, where she produces and stars in prank calls for the program.
