Are these problems?

• Too much technology?– “Technology for Technology’s Sake”

– Technology pervading society thoroughly

• Cyber crime – a growth area?

• Free flow of information – no secrets anymore, including a lack of reasonable (or any) privacy?

Spaceship Demopoulos Technology• Very Nice:

– Sonar– GPS/Maps– DVD Player– Etc.

• Too Much?– Microprocessor in keys? – Car needs to “reboot” sometimes!– Etc.

What could a “Smart House” do?

Email and Internet everywhere?

• My “special” friend Ralphie, email junkie.

• My 102 year old father (or so he claims) just got online.

• People check their email when they get up at night to go to the bathroom.

• Text messaging while driving, etc.

Technology Pervades Society More Deeply Than We Think

The Problem – When Technology Fails

• Too much dependence on technology worries me.

• “Technology for Technology’s Sake”

• Unnecessary complexity leads to unnecessary unreliability.

• Complexity increases attack surface.

• Often no backup plans.

Ted’s Backup Plan for This Trip

Do most people or organizations have workable backup plans for when technology fails?

Cyber crime

I see two types of criminals:

• Career Criminals – might also be involved in drug trade, murder for hire, kidnapping . . .

• Opportunistic “People” – would never consider doing anything evil, but anonymity and faceless nature of the Internet draws them in

Page 10: The SANS Institute, , Ted Demopoulos, ted@demop.com Three Things That Keep Me Up At Night INFRAGARD MEETING OCTOBER 25, 2007

The Reach of Cybercriminals

• The pool of potential attackers is much larger.

• Many are beyond any reasonable jurisdiction.

• Example: A smart 12 year old in rural Kazakhstan can strike businesses in NYC, stay at home dads in Peoria and a Coffee Shop in San Francisco.

Page 11: The SANS Institute, , Ted Demopoulos, ted@demop.com Three Things That Keep Me Up At Night INFRAGARD MEETING OCTOBER 25, 2007

Blended Attacks (Of Course)

• Opportunity for lots of damage.• Terrorists (just another breed of crook),

extortionists, crazies bent on “revenge”, etc.

• Example: Criminal releases poison gas and takes over ventilation system (perhaps controlled by wireless protocol ZigBee which has “optional” security).

Information

• Information keeps me up at night.

• Does anyone really control the flow of most information?

Page 13: The SANS Institute, , Ted Demopoulos, ted@demop.com Three Things That Keep Me Up At Night INFRAGARD MEETING OCTOBER 25, 2007

Free Flow of Information

Information WANTS to be free!

• Are there any secrets anymore?

• “Secret” is not the natural state for info

• Some things SHOULD be secret:– i.e. Plans for nuclear devices– List of what I purchased last year– Where I am every moment of the day

Page 14: The SANS Institute, , Ted Demopoulos, ted@demop.com Three Things That Keep Me Up At Night INFRAGARD MEETING OCTOBER 25, 2007

Free flow of information

• It’s harder to keep secrets anymore!• This includes a lack of reasonable (or any)

privacy.• When I speak, often 80%+ of the audience

has Googled me!• Info not always accurate, e.g. I am not the

Gay Activist named Ted Demopoulos, "not that there's anything wrong with that" as Seinfeld says

Page 15: The SANS Institute, , Ted Demopoulos, ted@demop.com Three Things That Keep Me Up At Night INFRAGARD MEETING OCTOBER 25, 2007

Privacy

• Distant past – villages – little privacy. Reasonable in context.

• Recent past – cities/industrial age. Reasonable privacy.

• Today – who has your data? Is it yours? Is it correct?

• I fear Big Brothers – e.g. Google, Microsoft, Verizon, Marketing Agencies, everyone who stores personal data

Ted’s Hobbies

• You got building permits for those antennas Ted?

As told to a new client

• I see Joe Schmoe just spent a week with your organization. He’s very positive on the experience. . . . . . He’s sitting in the Phoenix airport waiting to go home and his flight is delayed . . . .

• From the Technorati.com search engine, a multi page posting on a blog

Page 19: The SANS Institute, , Ted Demopoulos, ted@demop.com Three Things That Keep Me Up At Night INFRAGARD MEETING OCTOBER 25, 2007

The Internet is Read-Write

• Blogs make posting content as easy as sending email, except that it’s public.

• Social networks, e.g. MySpace, Facebook, Doostang, etc. make vast amounts of info available

• Even Video is easy now – stupid SANS instructor tricks on YouTube (not yet, but I’ve been threatened!)

Page 20: The SANS Institute, , Ted Demopoulos, ted@demop.com Three Things That Keep Me Up At Night INFRAGARD MEETING OCTOBER 25, 2007

So, What do I worry about?

• #1 Too much technology! Technology in inappropriate places. Too much complexity. Resulting unreliability. No backup plans

• #2 Cyber crime – opportunities for all

• #3 Information – all kinds, freely available whether appropriate or not.

We’ve got some nice opportunities too . . .
