PROGRAM Member Randy Wheeler explained his prolonged
absences from Kiwanis meetings – he’s been completely
immersed in Boy Scouting leadership with his two sons
ages 14 and 15. Many meetings and outings with a large
and very busy troop! His older son is working on
attaining his Eagle Scout rating, the younger is working
on his Life Scout rating. Most of the scouting programs
have emphasis on the younger boys, so Randy has been working on more for the older
scouts. In many ways the program is similar to Kiwanis objectives: service oriented, support of youth,
community involvement, and “fun-raising”. We can help each other with fund raising
events and community service events, providing leadership
skills, character building, creating feelings of self-worth and
stronger ties to community and family. Randy illustrated his talk
about scouting activities with pictures of hikes and camp-outs
which will prepare them for a 50 mile hike around Cranberry
Lake in the Adirondacks. They need training, diet, planning,
equipment, and how to protect their feet! They’ve hiked the Rail Trail from
Berkshire Mall to North Adams, 11 miles each way; near New Paltz, the
Mohonk Mountain House, a 3.1 mile hike to the stone fire tower; 4.7 mile hike in
Connecticut, with a 1900 foot vertical assent to 2316 ft altitude; Snow
Hole at Petersburg Pass, part of the Taconic Range where VT, NY, &
MA come together; Snow shoeing around Long Pond at Grafton State
Park; 4.5 mile hike north of Minerva, NY at Blue Ledges/Huntley
Pond; white water rafting the Hudson north of North Creek, NY;
learning how to use and care for firearms near Schaghticoke, NY;
participation in flag ceremony at Latham Kiwanis Park; backpack training around Long
Pond and up to the Grafton Fire Tower! Randy related his part in this training: breaking in his new boots
BEFORE the trip, increasing activity to lose 30 pounds to make
carrying a 35 pound pack easier (?)
and helping the boys raise the funds
to pay for their own equipment.
Future plans are for a trip to the
Florida Keys to learn ocean
experiences. Your scouts are very
fortunate, Randy, to have such a
dedicated leader! Thanks for a wonderful program!
HAPPY DOLLARS $ Joe Behson: My son has been asked to speak on National Public Radio next month on the
“Fathers at Work” topic! He’ll also be on Good Morning America sometime next week. $ Kevin Sarsfield: My son and daughter-in-law visited and electronically gathered the rest of the
family together to announce that we will be grandparents in January! $ Jim Rogers: My daughter and grandson have climbed their 23rd of the 46 High Peaks in NY! $ Pat Lane: NOT a happy dollar: my son-in-law is hospitalized with a serious infection of his
lower leg. $ Jerry Tysiak: Thanks to Randy for a great program and for all your work with the Scouts! $ John Brownrigg: I saw my 5th pair of bald eagles, about 7 years old, and also saw a fledgling
pair, down in the lower Hudson Valley! In addition, about 27 of us from the Van Rensselaer
Division (8 from SLK) gathered for a tailgate party followed by an Agatha Christie mystery play
yesterday. Rose Dorr and her daughter were with us, and the family has expressed their desire to
use the donations in Dudley’s memory for a scholarship to a worthy Key Club member. $ Randy Wheeler: Thanks to Kiwanis for all the community service you do! I’ll be back when my
kids grow up. I’ve changed jobs again, and have now landed in government, in the Attorney
General’s office, reforming procedures to save taxpayers’ money! $ Jim Colabelli: Great program, Randy! For some time we have been concerned about 3 huge
trees in front of our house, but they are now down and we have a much better view—of Joe’s
house! $ Pete Stevens: The town has finally completed the Glass Lake Fishing Access—right across the
road from my house! Also, my son has been relocated and is now stationed in Hawaii! $ Jim Colabelli, again: Thanks to Pete for giving me this book about Nantucket—Enduring Shore!
That amount of $1600 was for a week, not a night! Still expensive!
DOOR PRIZE, provided by Randy Wheeler, was won by Joe Behson!
50/50 for $23 was won by Peg Weiss!
PROGRESSIVE 50/50, worth $884 this week, is hanging on to that King of
Clubs! Bob Loveridge’s ticket was pulled but he could only come up with the
10 of Clubs from just 11 cards!
