Ordinary Time: Summer

A Sense of the Season

The great Feast of Pentecost ends the Easter Season. After this, the Church celebrates

the Season of Ordinary Time.

What do the words Ordinary Time mean?

Dorothy Day said, “The words ‘Ordinary Time’

in our prayer books put me in a state of

confusion and irritation. To me, no time is

ordinary.” She was right. The Ordinary in

“Ordinary Time” refers to ordinal—counted—

time, not to a lack of something to celebrate.

The Roman Document, General Norms for the

Liturgical Year and Calendar, says: “Apart from

those seasons having their own distinctive

character [Advent, Christmas Time, Lent,

Triduum and Easter Time], 33 or 34 weeks

remain in the yearly cycle that do not celebrate

a specific aspect of the Mystery of Christ.

Rather, especially on Sundays, they are

devoted to the Mystery of Christ in all its aspects.”

How do you celebrate “the Mystery of Christ in

all its aspects”? You gather for Mass every

Sunday. Sunday is the original Feast Day of

the Church. Catholics have gathered every

Sunday —the day of Christ’s Resurrection, the

First Day of the week—ever since the early

days of the Church.

When you gather on Sundays in Ordinary Time, as

always, you hear Sacred Scripture proclaimed.

The Church reads straight through “the Gospel of

the year,” either St. Matthew, St. Mark or St. Luke,

each week. In many cases the Sunday Gospel

picks up where it left off the week before. During

Lent and Easter, and on several Feasts, the

Church reads from the Gospel of St. John. The

First Readings at Mass from the Old Testament,

are chosen for their relationship to the Gospel

passage. Many Prophets and other voices are

heard throughout the summer in Ordinary Time.

In the Second Reading, some of the Letters in the

New Testament are read. Sacred Scripture is

one of the means by which the Mystery of Christ

“in all its aspects” unfolds for you every Sunday.

What is the heart of the Church’s Sunday

Celebration? It is the Holy Eucharist, a word

that means “Thanksgiving.” At Mass you

praise and thank God for all creation; you

pray for the whole world, as you remember

Jesus’ Life, Death and Resurrection. You

also share in the Body, Blood, Soul and

Divinity of Jesus. You are then sent forth to

be Jesus’ Witness in your home, your

workplace, your neighborhood, your city,

your country, and your world.

“What happens to you in Church every

Sunday is the fruit of your week. The fruit of

the week that is past is the beginning of fruit

in the week to come. Sunday is simultaneously

a point of arrival and departure for Catholics

on their way to the fullness of God’s Kingdom.

This is not ordinary at all. This is the fabric of

Catholic Life.” (Saint Andrew Bible Missal

[Brooklyn: William J. Hirten Co., 1982.])

CAN YOU BRING

PAJAMAS TO CHURCH?

YES! FOR A GOOD CAUSE!

THE CAUSE IS…

THE PAJAMA PROGRAM

FOR CHILDREN

As part of the Pajama Program, one of

our Parishioners, an Eagle Scout, is collecting

NEW PAJAMAS for needy children, from

infants to age 10. To support the Pajama

Program all you have to do is…

Decide whether you’d like to help a boy or a girl.

Then buy them a pair of NEW PAJAMAS.

You get to choose the color, size, and style.

Finally, bring your gift of NEW PAJAMAS to

Church on the Weekend of June 10/11.

Our Parishioner and his Eagle Scout

friends will be in the 55th Street

Entrance of the Church before and after

the Vigil and Sunday Masses on June

10th and 11th to collect your gifts.

Your gift of pajamas tells these

needy children that they are loved and

cherished by God.
