Getting to Know Bonefish

This may come as a surprise, butbecoming familiar with this popularfly fishing species is more challeng-ing than one might expect. Research-ers and flat anglers alike have won-dered for years about bonefish behav-ior. Finally, after all this time thereare some answers.

The Bonefish prefers reefs, shallows, estuaries, bays, grass flats, and other brack-ish areas at a depth from 0 to 84 meters. It is found worldwide in subtropical warmseas. In the Eastern Pacific, its range includes waters off California to Peru; theWestern Atlantic range stretches from North Carolina to Florida, the Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico, the Antilles and the rest of the Caribbean to Brazil.

Though it is not a highly esteemed food species, the Bonefish, Albula vulpes, isone of the most important game fishes in the world, and it is also occasionallyused for bait. Its weight and length may reach 10 kg and 104 cm respectively, though a more representative size would be about a third of that. Bonefish appearblue-greenish above, with bright silver scales on the sides and below. Darkstreaks run in between the rows of scales, predominantly on the dorsal side. Thebody is long, thin, and cigar shaped, with a bluntly cone-like snout. The bonefishhas a unique adaptation for tolerating oxygen-poor water; it inhales air into alung-like airbladder to supplement oxygen from the water. It is sometimes mis-taken for the ladyfish, a similar species. Linnaeus first described the bonefish in1758. Its scientific name can be translated as “white fox.”

There are three species of bonefishAlbula vulpes, A. nemoptera, andPterothrissus belloci, all of which be-long to the very large “bony” fishclass called Osteichthyes. The speciesfly anglers pursue, Albula vulpes in-habits warm, shallow, coastal watersworldwide. A. nemoptera, commonly

known as the longfin bonefish, residesin thin water near outlets around highislands in the western Atlantic andeastern Pacific. Pterothrissus bellocilives in only deep water and humansrarely ever encounter it. These animals are well-disguisedpredators. They ride rising tides towander warm, inshore saltwater flatsin search of bottom-dwelling prey. They feed on these tides at all hours, filling their oversized stomachs. In-satiable grazing machines, they areuniquely equipped to harvest theirmeals. Bonefish mouths operate withshell-shattering jaws, a tongue as hard

as ceramic and powerful grindingplates. Acute color vision, sharp hear-ing, mirrored camouflage, and light-ning speed protect them from captureby enemies. Certainly, they are thebest inshore flats hunter. Ask an angler, he or she will prob-ably tell you they find no other gamefish more challenging to stalk, hook, play, and release than Albula vulpes. The species has an interesting mixtureof traits that have escaped 125 millionyears of predation, making it the alltime ultimate survivor and most soughtafter fly-fishing game fish around to-day.

fields and plantations. The elevationof their habitat ranges from the low-lands to about 2000 to 2400 m. Be-cause the tayra is both terrestrial andarboreal, it has been found to live inhollow trees, burrows built by otheranimals and occasionally in tallgrass. Despite their wide occurrenceand relatively large size, surprisinglylittle is known about tayra reproduc-tion, life span, home ranges or hab-its. This large, long-legged weasel-like animal is the size of a mediumsized dog, with a long, bushy tail andlong neck ending in a robust head. Itshead and body range from 600 to 700mm in length and its tail length is 350to 450 mm. Tayras have large hindfeet varying in length from 80 to 90

mm with round, short ears that are about 35 to 40 mm long.Color varies with geographic range, but in general the tayra’sdark skin is covered by dense, short fur that is brown in colorwith a slightly paler head. The fur on its head changes to brownor gray as it ages. Usually it has a white, diamond shaped patchon its throat and chest. Tayras have long claws, pronouncedcanines and weigh 4 to 5 kg. They are a diurnal species that are sometimes active at duskor before dawn. Tayras usually travel alone or in pairs, how-ever, they are occasionally seen in small groups of 3 to 4 indi-viduals, the sexual distribution of which is unknown. In theirforest habitats, tayras often appear inquisitive, moving theirheads in an undulating, snakelike fashion to determine scents orsights. They can be seen moving rapidly through the trees or onthe ground. Both terrestrial and arboreal, tayras are very fastrunners and despite their limited eyesight are skilled climbersas well. They have been reported to climb down smooth treetrunks from heights of greater than 40 meters. Terrestrial loco-motion is usually composed of erratic, bouncing movements withthe back arched and the tail along the ground. Arboreal move-ments along horizontal branches are more fluid, and the tail isused as a balancing rod. A tayra may leap for considerabledistances, run up rocky cliffs, and bound from branch to branchin the trees. It is usually silent, but when alarmed, the tayra

Despite their wide occurrence and rela-tively large size, surprisingly little isknown about tayra reproduction, lifespan, home ranges or habits. Beingsmall and secretive, Mustelids, amongother groups of small carnivores, areoften neglected by conservation pro-grams which are usually aimed atlarger, more charismatic species.

gives a short, barking call and may snort, growl, and spit while seeking protection in a nearby tree. They have been known to give yowls, snarls orclicks when in groups. Although classified as carnivores, tayras areomnivorous, with diets comparable to those of rac-coons. It shows a preference for small mammals, the spiny rat in particular, but it will eat whateveris available, such as guinea pigs, mice, squirrels, agoutis and poultry. The tayra will also eat sig-nificant amounts of fruit, invertebrates and rep-tiles. It has also been shown that they will occa-sionally eat honeycomb when it is available. Little is known about the tayra’s reproduction. However it is thought that gestation lasts for about63 to 70 days with a litter size of 2 to 3 babies perseason, each weighing about 74 to 92 grams. New-borns open their eyes in about 5 to 8 days and theynurse for 2 to 3 months. Some believe that the mat-ing cycle is seasonal, with births occurring inMarch and July. Others believe that the tayra hasmonthly mating periods and is a non-seasonalbreeder. Being small and secretive, Mustelids, amongother groups of small carnivores, are often ne-glected by conservation programs which are usu-ally aimed at larger, more charismatic species.

The Tayra Continued from Page 6

The tayra is a large, long-legged weasel-like animal that is the size of amedium sized dog, with a long, bushy tail and long neck ending in a robusthead. Color varies with geographic range, but in general the tayra’s darkskin is covered by dense, short fur that is brown in color with a slightlypaler head. Usually it has a white, diamond shaped patch on its throat andchest.

Help is needed and you could make a difference by contributing to the con-servation of small carnivores, through the International Union for the Con-servation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) World ConservationUnion Small Carnivore Specialist Group. It is generally recognized that theMaya developed a system of writingthat consisted of a series of “glyphs”or symbols that appear bizarre to West-ern eyes. Since the discovery of theMaya script by nineteenth centuryscholars, the texts have remainedlargely untranslated. In recent years, art historians and epigraphers madesome remarkable progress toward abetter understanding of this complicatedscript, but we are a long way fromhome on this one. The first attempts at a written lan-guage were made, not by the Maya, but the Olmecs, along with the calen-dar and mathematic systems. Granted, the Olmecs went only so far with theseconcepts before their eclipse around

1200 B.C. The Maya shortly thereaf-ter picked up the ball and ranárefiningand expanding these systems in an un-precedented way. By 250 A.D. writ-ing was widespread throughout theMaya world and was visible on carvedstone monuments, pottery, wall paint-ings, and almost certainly bark-paperbooks that did not survive. The Mayascript is not a code at all, but rather agraphic system for expressing a lan-guage-oriented message. Codes areencrypted writings, not intended to beread by just anyone and are thereforesecret in nature. Not the sort of thingto put on a public monument. Manyscholars were convinced that the Mayascript could be understood if somehow

Dr. Herman Smith was the only PhD archeologist to reside in Belize. He wasnoted in his field as a foremost researcher and expert in the coastal trading of theMaya and headed the archaeological development of Lamanai in Belize. Hermandiscovered and contributed much to the body of knowledge of the Maya onceliving on Ambergris Caye. If asked about this subject, he would gladly inform hislisteners of the Maya past with detailed length and expansive arm waving. Hishumor accompanied these mini-lectures, eliminating any academic dryness andendearing him to the students and groups that he worked with on sites around theisland. He lived in Belize for over 12 years and eventually obtained Belizean citizen-ship. Dr. Herman Smith - U.S. Marine Corps pilot, decorated Vietnam veteran, archeologist, friend, and husband died on March 10th, 2000. Above all his manyaccomplishments from fighter piloting to practicing archeology – is that Hermanwas a friend to all in San Pedro. He contributed countless articles to The SanPedro Sun, articles that we are pleased to share with you once more.

a key to the glyphs could be found.Shortly after World War Two, the teamof expert code-breakers that hadcracked the Japanese Naval Code wasbrought in to “break the code.” Yearslater the entire team passed on withouthaving solved a single glyph. There are about 800 signs in theMaya hieroglyphic script, but given therange of variability of scribes, manyof these may be variations of the sameglyph. Then too, many of the symbolsare what are known as a logogram, suchas the name of a ruler whose namemight appear once or twice in the writ-ten record and then disappear. Somesymbols have the same meaning andothers have more than one meaning. Most epigraphers argue that some-where between 200 and 300 glyphswere in general use at any given timein Maya history. With the relativelyfew symbols and knowledge of the 30Maya languages currently being spo-

ken, what is the problem? Why has thedecypherment stumped some of theworld’s most powerful linguistic intel-lects for two centuries? Very simply stated, the glyphs con-tain several components. Some makeuse of pictures of objects to convey

meaning along with syllables made upof two or more sounds or phonemes.Phonemes are derived from the Mayalanguage of the period and region. En-glish, for example has 26 letters in thealphabet but over 40 sounds or pho-nemes. Consider the “sh” or “ch”

sounds in “shut” and “church.” Nowin order to understand the languagecomponents in the glyphs it is neces-sary, naturally, to know which languagethe sounds were derived from. AsShakespeare would say “therein liesthe rub.” Of the existing Maya languages, schol-ars cannot be sure which evolved fromthe Maya language of the Maya script. At the close of the Classic period inMaya history, the scribes who were apart of the ruling elite class faded intoobscurity and the writing went with them. The last carved stone monument waserected in 889 A.D. Consequently, it isnot possible to trace the evolution of lan-guages until the reintroduction of writingby the Europeans. In English we have awritten record that takes us back throughChaucer and even to Beowulf, which onecan hardly recognize today as a precur-sor to modern English. In spite of these formidable odds, epigraphers have made significant gainsin the last few years. Glyphs pertainingto various parts of speech have been iden-tified. Symbols for social and historicimportance have been isolated, such asthose glyphs for birth, death, ascensionto the throne, marriage and personalnames and titles. It’s anybody’s guess just how manymore symbols will be identified in thefuture given the very limited amount oftexts to be studied, but one group has re-jected the whole notion of deciphermentout of hand. Most, but not all, field ar-cheologists (or “dirt” archeologists asthey are sometimes known) take the po-sition that all the art historians have donewith their effort at translation is to pro-duce the most boring and useless form ofhistory, that is to say a list of kings andthe events in their lives accompanied bydates that may or may not be propaganda.Commemorative monuments extolling themilitary prowess of a certain ruler maybe nothing more than an ancient versionof the Gulf War written by SaddamHussein. So the dirt archeologists say “sowhat” to the epigraphers. When someconcrete evidence is extracted that provesuseful in the understanding of the dailylives of the Mayas related to subsistenceand settlement patterns, trade relation-ships, social and political mechanisms, engineering, etc., then perhaps the ar-cheologists will sit up and take notice.

Also documented is the Mayas’incredible grasp of numbers.

“Hey, Wolfe, it’s Monday,” Casey said. “Is it your night off?”

“It sure is.”

“You want to come over to the house and play some bluegrass music to-night?”

“There’s nothing I would like better,” I said. “But I just can’t. I have to takeDulce to dinner tonight.”

“What’s the occasion?” he asked. “Birthday? Your anniversary?”

“No,” I said. “We’ve been fighting like cats and dogs this week and I thoughtI’d better try to do something right. You know what a smart mouth I have any-way.”

“I am aware of rumors about it.”

“Well, I let my mouth get away from me this week a few times. I figured ifI took her to dinner and made it through the evening without saying anythingstupid maybe we would start getting along better.”

“That makes sense,” Casey said.

I was doing quite well through dinner and by the end of the evening we weretalking civilly to each other again. Then disaster struck.

“I notice you’ve been staring at that drunken guy over in the corner all night,”I said. “Do you know him?”

“Oh, I know him all right,” Dulce said. “He was my boyfriend a few yearsbefore I met you. I broke up with him and he started drinking. He’s been drink-ing like that since I split up with him over twenty years ago.”

“That’s absolutely remarkable,” I said. “I didn’t think anybody could cel-ebrate that long.”
