A different kind of night life!

Belize has fantastic dive sites;there is no question about it. Amber-gris Caye visitors and locals alikelove the glorious sites found under-water, the colors, the life, a wonder-ful world. However, each site thatyou visit during the day will becomecompletely different and new by thelight of the moon. Experienced divers know thatwhen embarking in the night adven-ture, your site has to be one that youare thoroughly familiar with. So for

this great escapade what better placethan Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Ona night dive, even your local dive sitetakes on a new personality at night,as many underwater creatures andplant life (different from those yousee during the day) become active. If you have never been on a nightdive, you have no idea of the under-water magic you are missing. Thetrue colors of the reef come alive atnight under the diver’s light. Manyof the creatures that hide by day now

roam across the reef, while the day-time critters snooze peacefully un-der ledges and in holes. Night divingis a way to add new excitement to afamiliar area only dove in daytimebefore. Under a full moon on a calmnight, divers can turn off their lightand still see amazing things. Just wav-ing your hand in front of you excitesmicroscopic animals in the waterwhich turn luminescent for a briefmoment, like Tinker Bell waving hermagic wand.

At night, lobster crawl from theirholes as they migrate in the darkness. At night, grouper and parrotfish hidein holes and under ledges in slumber, where they can be approached andobserved or photographed veryclosely and with ease. On this par-ticular night, we get the opportunityto feed the coral and watch morayeels scatter through the coral as thefollow us. Night diving opens the un-derwater world to you all over again,

in a whole new way. What makes our experience en-tirely special and unique is the guid-ance of Junior from Ecologic Divers.Junior has been in the tourism indus-try for the past seven years; a vi-brant, young professional. On numer-ous occasions, he has been named asone of the top five best instructors ofAmbergris Caye. His immense pas-sion for the sea has led him to thisprofession. His ideal goal is to teachas many people to scuba dive and to

make them aware of the riches thatBelize has to offer. Junior is a certi-fied PADI MSDT. He is a Nitrox,EFR, and Specialty Instructor (underwater photography, Deep Dive,Search and Recover, Diver Propul-sion Vehicle, and Navigation) He isa licensed Local Tour Guide and acertified Boat Captain. In the early 70’s Belize and Amber-gris Caye were fairly unknown. How-ever, that is not the case now. Touristsworldwide flock to the unspoiled beautyof the country and enjoy days in the tropi-cal island breeze where all of nature iswild and free. Countless internationalpublications have dedicated stories, pho-tos, and covers to what many of us callhome. Over years, the great publicity hasmade Belize a “must visit” to not onlydivers, because of its fantastic underwa-ter escapes, but also to adventure seek-ers who thrill on walking the land of theMayas, and visiting the pure tropicaljungles available. This month, Caribbean Travel Maga-zine printed yet another glorious articleon the wonders and beauty of AmbergrisCaye. Entitled “Give me the Cayes” theexposé speaks of the growth of the smallcommunity. However the writer statesthat it “still feels the same – friendly, sandy.” Although many things havechanged, “I do recognize a lot, though, and I hear that Elvis Kitchen is still theplace for the Friday-night Maya buffetand Ruby’s Café is still the best whenyou need to grab a quick breakfast be-fore hitting the water. Then I spot a signthat brings back a flood of sweet memo-ries – and I duck inside Manelly’s for acone filled with the world’s best coconutice cream.” Of course, what kind of article wouldit be without mentioning the diving – “deepreef slopes, massive spur-and-grooveformations, intricate swim-throughs” –

“Give me the Cayes” - Ambergris Caye featured in Caribbean Travel & Lifeand speaking a little something aboutShark Ray Alley, mentioning that eventhough it is one of the best sites it is alsothe easiest. It goes into the real estate field sayingthat it is “…booming, and the island isgrabbing a decent share of the growingmarket of retirees and vacation home-owners attracted to Central America’stropical lifestyle and low cost of living.A place well-situated to take advantageof that increased interest is Sueño delMar.” John Turley, living and working inBelize for over three years, commentedon the amenities offered by the beautifulresort located on North Ambergris Caye. The 300-foot pier welcomes guests to thepalapa-roofed restaurant/bar and out toone of the pools which is surrounded by“an array of two-story luxury condobuildings.” The article goes on to explainthe beauty of becoming a member ofSueño del Mar, who purchase a mini-mum two-month share in a one- or two-bedroom unit. Turley explained, “And,before you arrive for the stay, the con-cierge takes everything that is yours –sports equipment, pictures on the walls, things like that – out of storage and putsthem back where you had them. So youwalk into your home.” The story goes on to visit Turneffe Is-land and Turneffe Island Lodge on CayeBokel. Speaking of the diving, the articlealso mentions the fantastic fishing avail-able on the island.

John Turley, Sueño del Mar, “We have been featured on the Denver Post Newspa-per, and Islands Magazine, however this is the most prominent one. Since the ar-ticle, we have seen a tremendous increase in inquires and interest not only in Sueñodel Mar but Ambergris Caye in general. We have already had three sales but to methe most exciting part is receiving emails and calls from people that are interested inlearning more about the island. I have personally received over a hundred emails onbasic questions about Ambergris Caye; people who did not know or who have neverheard of Ambergris Caye are interested in visiting.

How does this publicity affect the many businesses getting incredible reviews? In an interview with the various businesses, we found the following:

munity in Belize. After searching for the right area, Ambergris Caye wasdecided to be the perfect location. The mission statement was simple: “Letthe diver have the very best time diving the water of the second largestreef.” They continue today to look for ways to make the diving experience inBelize one of the best in the world. Some people call it “diving, pamperedstyle”. Contact them at (226) 4118 or [email protected]

Amparo Gutierrez, Manager – Elvis’ Kitchen, “We have been featured in vari-ous television shows and magazines like HGTV and Food and Wine, and yessome people do mention having seen the show or article but most people cometo Elvis because of the name that we have established for ourselves. The wordof mouth is the best. People that visit and enjoy our food tell their friends who inturn come as well. The locals enjoy our food too and that is why they neverhesitate to recommend us.”

Moray EelsMoray EelsMoray EelsMoray EelsMoray Eels

Moray eels are large eels that belongto the family Muraenidae. They are foundin most parts of the world and under var-ied ecological conditions. There are ap-proximately 200 species of eels that be-long to this family, with the largest beingthe slender giant moray which can growup to 13 feet ( 4 m) in length. Most mo-rays measure five feet (1.5 m.) in lengthand frequent tropical and subtropicalcoral reefs to depths of 200 meters, where they spend most of their timecrammed inside crevices and alcoves.Often seen with their heads poking out ofa hole in the reef, they are not usuallyaggressive and do not present a danger

to divers as long as they are left alone. Some morays are active (swimmingabout the reef) during the day, while oth-ers are nocturnal in their habits, and allmorays are carnivores, feeding on a va-riety of fishes, cephalopods (mainly oc-topus) and crustaceans. They secrete aprotective mucus over their scalelessskin which contains a toxin in some spe-cies. Their small circular gills, locatedon the flanks far posterior to the mouth, require the moray eel to maintain a gap-ing mouth in order to facilitate respira-tion. The dorsal fin extends from justbehind the head, along the back and joinsseamlessly with the caudal and anal fin. Most species lack pectoral and pelvicfins, adding to their snake-like appear-ance. Their eyes are rather small, andmorays rely on their highly developedsense of smell, lying in wait to ambushtheir prey. Their bodies are patternedcryptically, the camouflage also beingpresent inside the mouth. Their jaws areequipped with strong, sharp teeth, whichenable them to seize and hold their prey(chiefly other fishes) but also to inflictserious wounds on their enemies, includ-ing humans.

Hand-feeding moray eels is risky busi-ness and not recommended. They are aptto attack humans only when disturbed, but then they can be quite vicious. To pre-vent contact and possible severe injurykeep hands out of those rocky areas, holesand crevices. If you must, use a stick toprobe. Injuries can result in bleeding, severe muscle damage and chippedbones. Stop any bleeding, clean woundsthoroughly and get medical help to guardagainst infection. If you are fishing becareful, as dead fish, blood or bait willbring them out of their holes. Frequentlylobsters will be in the same hole as theeel, in this case at least two of thelobster’s antennae (feelers) will be di-rected backward to keep check of the eel. Studies of the reproduction of morayshave revealed two types of hermaphro-ditism: most species appear to beprotandrous (sequential) hermaphroditesthat become mature as males and thenlater in life change to females; but somespecies are synchronous (simultaneouslymale and female) hermaphrodites, withfunctional ovaries and testes at the sametime. The life cycle of the eels is a pro-

cess where eels hatch from eggs that thefemale lays. A newly-hatched egg calledthe larva is transparent, gelatinous, leaf-shaped, and free-floating. As the larvagrows and is carried along by ocean cur-rents, its body changes shape (it meta-morphoses) into a tiny, transparent, cy-lindrical-shaped eel (called a glass eel).As it matures and develops some color,it is called an elver. It will metamor-

phose one more time, becoming an adult(having adult coloration and able to breed). Morays aren’t fast swimmers and usu-ally move around the reef at night sniff-ing out food while spending the daytimeholed up. It is not very common to seeone out in the open, but when you do,these magnificent creatures of the under-world are a great spectacle to watch andare best viewed from a distance.

“Now, what the hell am I supposed to do with this?” Casey Moore said. “Iguess José thinks I’m going to rub the whiskers out.” “What are you talking about?” I asked. I was unloading my instruments at Casey’s Roadkill Bar when I heard himstart ranting. “I was talking about old José that cleans up the yard around here,” Caseysaid. “I thought he understood English pretty well so I asked him to go to thesupermarket and get me a razor. He came back with an eraser.” “Aw, that happens all the time here,” I said. “Joe Miller used to say thatBelize is not a Third World country. It’s a Third Word country. Everybodyunderstands every third word that’s said.” “Well, I still need a razor,” Casey said. I finished unloading my golf cart and drove him to the supermarket. Caseygot his razor and then we walked toward the back of the store so he could getsome paper towels. As we stood in the aisle next to one of the employees, the man at the registeryelled, “Hey, Ali! This lady needs a price check on Tampax.” Ali stepped forward, picked up two boxes of thumb tacks and looked at them. Then he yelled back, “Hey! Ask her if she wants the kind you push in withyour thumb or the ones you pound in with a hammer.”
