Chairman's Chat

A very warm welcome to the September

edition of the SAM Observer.

Following my attendance of July's IAM

circuit based skills day at Thruxton my

tyres, Pirelli Angel ST's, were in need of

replacing. I'd usually replace them with

around 1.5mm of tread depth remaining, so

with the front at 1.5mm and the rear at just

over the 1mm minimum a new set were

well overdue. Having had the new set

fitted I was surprised to learn, based on the

mileage recorded on the dealer invoices,

that I'd managed to squeeze 8988 miles out of the old set!

Our Editor, Felix, would like your help with content for this, the award

winning SAM Observer magazine. If you can put a few words together by way

of an article about a recent holiday or event, accompanied with a photo or two,

you'll make him a happy man. It doesn't necessarily have to be motorcycle

related. Here's a photo of me taken last month with 'Adam & Eve' at the

summit of Tryfan, Snowdonia, for inspiration.

Page 6: The SAM Observer September 2015

The SAM Observer September 2015 www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com Page 6

With the evenings drawing in I hope you managed to make it to the last Chip

Run of 2015 to Clacton at the end of last month. The first of the winter months

Saturday Jaunts takes place on September 12th, heading to Holt. As you've

learned to expect from SAM Social Rides there are several eating options

available at the destination. Check out the SAM Calendar for more details of

this and other SAM organised ride outs and events.

http://www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com/cal

Speaking of events the Copdock Classic Motorcycle Club's (CCMC) 24th

show takes place on Sunday 4th October. We'll have a presence at the show by

way of the SAM Promotions Stand and through providing parking services for

the visitors arriving by motorcycle. Can you spare a couple of hours on the day

to help with the bike parking? Please see Nigel Chittock's amusing request on

page 8 for more details.

It's heartening to see the number of new members taking up a Skill for Life

recently, as is presenting the test passes coming through as the year progresses.

Whether you're a new member, are progressing towards a test-standard ride or

have passed your test recently, congratulations from me.

Many thanks to Pete Edwards, SAM member and paramedic for his

Motorcycle First Aid talk at August's group night. The key points of his

presentation I took away being the importance of further motorcycle training,

the absolute need to wear adequate protective clothing whilst riding and that

there is an interest within the group for another round of First Aid training. I'll

be keeping a keen eye out for Pete whilst watching the highlights of the British

Superbikes and the MotoGP events that he regularly attends. This month's

guest speaker is Nik Powell from Powercases promoting their range of portable

power solutions.

If you have any ideas or suggestions for our monthly group night guest

speakers our Events Team Committee Member, Trevor Read will also be

pleased to hear from you.

Cheers

Steve

COPDOCK BIKE SHOW MOTORCYCLE PARKING

HELPERS NEEDED

Sunday 4th October

As you may be aware, for the last few years SAM has been organising the

motorcycle parking at the Copdock Bike Show and marshalling their fun runs

for which SAM has received several generous donations totalling many

thousands of pounds from the Copdock Classic Motorcycle Club. These

donations have been used to promote road safety for motorcyclists in our area.

We already have a few offers of help on the day but we are in need of some

more to ensure that the many bikes that turn up are all parked safely and as

efficiently as possible. If you can spare an hour or two on the day could you

please either contact Chairman:

Steve Gocher on 01473 430643 or email [email protected]

Or

Nigel Chittock on 01473 737356 or [email protected].

The only requirements are an ability to direct bikes to where we want them to

park and not where they think they would like to park and to be able to offer a

friendly word of encouragement to those that don't quite comply with our

wishes. If you can juggle a bottle of water, a ham roll, hold an arrow and talk to

someone wearing ear plugs then you are definitely the person we are looking

for. However, training will be given on the day.

One thing to remember..all bikers are like sheep, and I don't mean they're just

nice and cuddly. They both tend to lose the ability to act logically when

confronted with any semblance of an open space. Once they see a gap they will

head straight for it, quickly followed by the next six daft buggers that are

following behind.

It is our job to ensure this doesn't happen. It's as simple as that. You may also

allow yourself time to admire the multitude and diversity of bikes and bikers as

they magically form themselves into nice straight rows before your eyes. To

assist you I have thoughtfully compiled the SAM I-SPY guide to Bikers.

Page 9: The SAM Observer September 2015

The Learner; Lots of revving, wonky L-plates and no gloves. Quite

entertaining to watch.

The Sports Bike Rider; Illegal exhaust, ill-fitting leathers and uncomfortable

looking boots. Often make a funny squeaking noise as they walk. Becoming an

endangered species.

The Adventure Biker; Rides something expensive, heavy and with every

conceivable accessory bolted to it, none of which are ever used. Often seen

riding across the bike park with both feet dragging on the ground, 'cos it's

really scary riding on grass. Very common nowadays.

The Hooligan: Anyone who turns up on a Street Triple. Errr...ok. Let's move

on, shall we?

The Budget Biker; Rides something old, unfashionable with astronomical

mileage, held together with duct tape and wire. A real Biker. Total respect due

here.

The MZ Rider; A rare beast but they're still out there. Normally heads straight

for the auto-jumble to try and find replacement parts for all those that have

fallen off since last year’s show. How I love the smell of two-stroke first thing

in the morning.

The Sensible Biker; Hi-vis/textile wearing individual who could turn up on

anything. A decent rider who knows they could be a better rider with some

training. Future SAM member if Martin and Glyn can get hold of them. Jolly

decent type of person.

The Cruiser; Hairy, scary, heavily tattooed with multiple piercings. The male

variety are often even worse. Always lots of chrome on show combined with

lots of noise. Tend to arrive in groups. Specialise in looking mean, but they're

not really. (See sheep above).

The Car Driver; Idiot who's turned up in the wrong place. Re-direct to car park

for the RoSPA lot to sort out.

So, now you know what to expect please contact either Chairman Steve or

myself and don't forget that refreshments and entertainment(?) will be provided

on the day.

SARS

An Ipswich mum-of-two had an emotional reunion with the “hero” volunteer

paramedics who saved her life – after her heart stopped five times.

Samantha Turner, 45, of Kestrel Road, collapsed at home after suffering a

cardiac arrest following a day out shopping in Bury St Edmunds. Her husband

Adrian called for paramedics and administered first-aid before they arrived.

A clot in an artery supplying her heart needed to be removed but the nearest

specialist cardiac centre was more than 50 miles away in Basildon.

On the way, her heart stopped another four times.

But a specialist critical care team of volunteers from emergency medical

charity Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) restarted her heart each time

in the ambulance.

And now she is hoping to make a full recovery after receiving hospital

treatment. “I am in no doubt that the emergency services’ quick response and

Page 11: The SAM Observer September 2015

The SAM Observer September 2015 www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com Page 11

the critical care from the specialist volunteer SARS team saved my life,” she

said.

“I can’t believe that these dedicated people are willing to give up so much of

their time for free to help others and save lives. Thanks to these heroes I can

now look forward to the rest of mine.”

The former Chantry High School (now Suffolk New Academy) pupil described

the reunion with the paramedics at Ipswich Hospital yesterday as “very

emotional”, adding: “It was very nice to finally meet them again. I’m so

grateful.”

SARS critical care paramedic Jemma Varela said: “Mrs Turner was very lucky.

We had decided to start our shift earlier than normal and we received the call

almost immediately after we had logged on.”

The incident on May 1 even coincided with the 43rd birthday of SARS.

Dr Neil Berry, a consultant anaesthetist for SARS, said: “We had to make

several advanced pre-hospital interventions during the journey to ensure that

Samantha remained stable.

“Basildon’s response was amazing and she received top quality treatment there

and fantastic care at Ipswich Hospital.

“However, the main praise should go to her husband Adie for his quick-

thinking in delivering CPR which meant that all the different services could

come together to ensure Samantha can continue to live a happy life with her

family.”

Mr Turner, 46, said: “It seemed like fate. I had only just refreshed my first aid

at a course at work. I remember putting at the bottom of the form where they

ask for feedback that I would try to give it a go.”

Mrs Turner, a learning support assistant at The Oaks Primary School in

Ipswich, is mother to Steven, 23, and George, 18.

East of England Ambulance Service paramedics Colin Treece, Bridget Read

and James Mullett, along with Stuart Evans and Joshua Anstey from the St

John Ambulance, also helped save her life.

The Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) is an emergency medical charity

established in 1972. SARS provides specially trained doctors and critical care

paramedics to assist the East of England Ambulance Service at the scenes of

serious incidents – both accidents and medical illnesses. All the work

undertaken by SARS doctors and paramedics is provided voluntarily without

any cost to the patient, ambulance service or taxpayer.

All their activity is funded by voluntary donations and they receive no

government funding.

People can make donations via the website www.sars999.org.uk or through

their new 999 appeal page which is for donors who would like to make a

regular donation of £9.99 a month to help support SARS

SAM Theory Evenings

As most of you know, on the Thursday evening, directly

after Group Nights, SAM holds its monthly Theory

Evening. Based on an ever revolving subject list of

important rider skills these nights are an informal evening

of facts and lively banter all aimed at improving your ride

based on the information in “How to be a better rider”.

Each session covers one of the four main topic areas;

Overtaking Planning & Positioning

Cornering Gears & Acceleration

Mainly aimed at Associates going through the Skill for Life course, these

evenings are also a good way for full members to brush up on their theory and

add their experiences and questions to the session.

The great benefit of attending these sessions in the classroom means it saves

time on the road, covering theory and has the added advantage of an

opportunity to discuss any issues you may have generally on your Skill for Life

Course.

Ride Leaders and Ride Coordinators are the full SAM members that

facilitate SAM social rides. In order to maintain and hopefully increase

the club social rides, the club needs sufficient numbers to allow our

much-loved breakfast, Summer Chip and Winter Saturday Jaunts to

continue. If you are interested in helping the club, and helping yourself

by becoming a Ride Co-ordinator and ride Leader, please contact Sara

Hale or Leia Dowsing to find out more information about one or both

of these roles.

An Alpine Biking Experience

In August we took a trip to

Europe; a 2200mile motorbike

trip which took us as far South

as the shores of Lake

Maggiore in Italy. Who were

the ‘we’. Six enthusiastic

bikers , four from Suffolk and

two from Surrey.

The weather makes a huge

difference to any trip and we

were lucky (or unlucky ) to

have our fair share of rain and

cold. On one day we had a temperature range from 5C to 27C – this is August

remember, and try to sort out the right clothing to wear for such a range. But

bad weather brings its benefits- we honed our road positioning and our lines,

and skills for hairpins rose by several notches. This wet weather ‘lesson’ in

concentration highlighted hazard awareness, throttle control and braking but

put us in great stead for the good days ahead. Clive our ‘tour organiser’ had a

superb itinerary with Km after Km of brilliant roads just rolling forth.

There were too many Alpine passes to mention but notable are the Grimsel,

Furka, Nufene, and Simplon passes.

Switzerland is just awash with these fantastic roads, making our Suffolk roads

look so tame.

The ‘team’ : Graham, Martin, Nick, Robert, Peter

& Clive

A rest for lunch at Faulensee -Thunersee

Page 20: The SAM Observer September 2015

The SAM Observer September 2015 www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com Page 20

Every trip has its

memorable moment;

Peter grinning like a

Cheshire cat after his

first mountain pass,

and our early

morning ride through

the ancient city of

Langres (not sure we

should have ridden

through the centre on

the cobbled streets,

but our ignorance

and poor command

of the language has

its benefits).

Then there was the

old St Gotthard pass

which has to take

pride of place with its

very narrow road

made of cobbled

stones.

No smooth tarmac

and substantial crash

barriers here. There

are 19Km of cobbles

and 38 hairpins with

an average gradient of

7% and a max

gradient of 11.3% - so

no time to take your

eyes of the road ahead

as those steep bends

just kept coming!

It is a true first gear

ordeal.

The Swiss just know how to make good

biking roads

Page 21: The SAM Observer September 2015

The SAM Observer September 2015 www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com Page 21

Of course we had many great meals

out such as lunch at Indemini on the

way to Lake Maggiore, plus there

were some funny moments too.

Many will have experienced long

rides out which need to be

peppered with the occasional

comfort break. But suitable places

are not always that easy to find especially on those mountain passes. Sheep are

a common sight and poor Nick was approached ‘mid flow’ by what seems like

an amorous flock. He has never moved so fast and his Dick Emery waddle is a

memory to behold.

The bikes; three BMW K1300, Kawasaki Z1000 , Honda VFR 800 and our

sturdy ‘camel’ the BMW R1200GS all performed brilliantly with a couple of

dry chains after the heavy rains for the non-driveshaft variants and small oil top

ups across the board was all that was required; a testaments to modern

engineering.

Africa Twin Seat Modification

I have a Honda Africa Twin, with a very uncomfortable seat both for me and

my wife. So I thought I would write a bit about what we did to overcome it.

The seat was also quite short so I decided to extend it by about 70 mm first. I

made up a template from cardboard and cut it to a shape that could be riveted

to the underside of the seat base and fit when fitted to the bike. The extended

part will rest on part of the rack support. I then made the real part from

Hidden Valley near Gondo on Swiss border

Page 23: The SAM Observer September 2015

The SAM Observer September 2015 www.suffolk-advanced-motorcyclists.com Page 23

stainless steel and after lots of bending/bashing made it fit. This was then

riveted in place with mastic in between to take up any gaps.

Unfortunately, after moving the clasp on the underneath of the seat to

centralise it better on the bike, the threaded inserts that were fitted into the seat

when it was made came loose! I couldn’t repair them properly so had to

remove them leaving two holes. I then made a cardboard template for two new

plates, one fitted inside and one outside that would be clamped together when

the clasp was fitted. This is hard to describe but the finished job was a much

stronger seat clasp.

My wife and I did some research on seat manufacturers and found that some

companies could not re-cover our seat because it was an after market one with

a hard fibreglass base. This is apparently harder to staple than plastic.

Eventually we found a company called P&P Seating Ltd in Birmingham. After

a few e-mails with photos and sketches of what we wanted we decided that

they would be the ones to re-mould our seat. Importantly, rather than use

upholstery foam, they produce their own foam moulds and sculpture them to fit

different seats bases, whatever their size. This should make the seat much

more comfortable.

We took the extended seat to P&P and discussed what we wanted. We saw

many finished and saw one design that we particularly liked that could be fitted

to our seat base. We were able to choose the material, which could be

embossed if we wanted. P&P then sent some e-mails showing photos of the

rough mould fitted to our seat base. We tweaked the length of the rider and

pillion seating areas until we were satisfied. P&P finished the moulding and

then covered it, adding ‘Honda’ embossed on it in black.

The finished seat was returned to us and what a great job they made of it. The

whole modification from P&P cost approx. £180.00. We could have added gel

pads at an extra cost but decided against this.

I fitted the modified seat to the bike and it has made a huge difference,

immediately feeling much more comfortable. It looks good too. My wife has

more room and her area was stepped so she was sitting on a flat seat rather than

a sloping one. A great result and it shows what can be done.

Phil Acton.

Editorial

Someone put out a vicious rumour that

it’s summer, after a few days of sun, the

rain has returned.

I see the club is getting to grips with the

Chief’s Challenge. I was sitting at my

parents’ house which happens to be

beside one of the village signs, when a

bike came up, stopped, engine off, after

about 5 minutes fires up and roars off.

As for my own challenge, I had managed to get most of them, but with work

family and summer.. er I mean winter, I hadn’t had a chance to get round all of

them, and had been to one site but couldn’t find the sign.

Last Saturday I had a small window, Mrs Editor was north

with her parents, Both the Editorlets where out doing stuff.

So after finishing the day’s work I togged up and left at

18:00ish Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances ( a

small miss calculation ) I had to dash from one corner of the

county to the other side. This is one of the village signs I

managed to take… ended up getting home at 22:30

Hope everyone had a good time on the Chief’s Challenge

and I would like to thank the Chief for arranging this. Must

have taken a few minutes to set up

Closing date for copy FridayFridayFridayFriday after club night

If you’d like to help save the Group on the printing and postage costs of your

monthly ‘hard copy’ of the ‘SAM Observer’ by opting to receive an email

notification instead, then please give me your email details on Group Night or

send me an email.

I hope that you have been enjoying the reports that members who go on ride

outs have written, and as you can see, it doesn’t have to be a wordy passage, so

feel free to scribble a few words down, a few pictures and next month you will

have another great magazine to read

Don’t forget to take your cameras and a notebook to record your trip then you

can write a nice article about it for your favourite magazine. I have a word

template if anyone would like it, email me and I’ll send you a copy which has

all the formatting re-set on it. Please remember that we use Times New Roman

as the main font for the magazine at a size 16 so that when the printer converts

the A4 pages down to A5 the font looks like a 12. I like pictures to be separate

to your articles because I can make them bigger or small to fill the page
