from the Divisional Leaders
As you review the contents of this annual report, you will note the thousands
of lives that were touched by our many ministries last year in Georgia.
Thank you for being a shield right here in Georgia to your neighbors in
need; a shield against hunger, homelessness, poverty, human trafficking,
a shield for children, and more. The Salvation Army was able to make
a difference in your community because of you. Meeting people at their
point of need and communicating the love of God through practical
expressions of compassion is the mission of The Salvation Army.
It is a big job and the needs will only increase as our community continues
to grow and change. But with your support and encouragement, The
Salvation Army will continue “Doing The Most Good” and carrying out
our commitment of meeting material and spiritual needs.
May God bless you.
Sincerely,
Majors Jim and Linda Arrowood, Georgia Divisional Leaders

On October 19, 1890, The Salvation Army began its work
in Georgia by proclaiming the Gospel on city streets. Its
“grand opening” was a small but significant affair, beginning
with the open-air evangelistic service on the street corner and
proceeding to a meeting in their newly rented assembly room.
The Salvation Army in Atlanta grew slowly. By the end of
January 1891, the Army had enlisted 30 soldiers. On April
12, 1891, the second official corps opened in Augusta, Georgia.
By 1895 the mission was again gaining ground. The Columbus
Corps opened in 1895, Rome in 1897, Macon in 1899, and
Brunswick and Savannah in 1900. Other cities followed.
In the years to come many more Corps would flourish.
The Salvation Army’s Southern Territorial Headquarters
is located in Atlanta and oversees the programs and services
of the 15 southern states. In addition, The Salvation Army’s
Evangeline Booth College for training Salvation Army
ministers (officers) is also located in Atlanta.
History
The Salvation Army’s Camp Grandview opens the
door of opportunity for children. For many kids who
are neglected or come from troubled homes, Camp
Grandview offers a place of gentleness and peace as
well as somewhere to enjoy nature, fresh air, exercise,
three nutritious meals a day, and lots of laughter.
Thanks to the generosity of the community, last year
more than 1,724 children from Georgia attended
Camp Grandview where they played recreational
activities, swam in a pool, fished, made crafts, attended
bible studies, and learned important new life skills
to stand them in good stead for the future. Camp
Grandview also offers a four-week Conservatory Camp,
where campers take music lessons, participate in
chorus; major in drama, brass or piano, and more.

This past year, a man and his wife came to The Salvation
Army in Toccoa for rental assistance. Two months prior, the
husband was told he had stage IV pancreatic cancer and only
had three months to a year to live. The couple had three very
young children.
Since the mother was the primary caregiver for both her
husband and children, she could not work. This family of
five was living on the father’s disability without access to
another source income. The family also incurred extra car
and travel expenses due to trips to Athens for the father’s
treatments. In addition to the awful pain of losing a husband
and father, the prospect of becoming homeless was devastating.
Through Project Hope, the Salvation Army was able to
pay for four months of rent, as well as provide food and
clothing to the family. In addition, they were also referred
to places where they received the counseling needed to help
them through their time of need.
The Salvation Army Georgia Corps
Community Centers are committed to
strengthening the family by providing
support such as; counseling and
guidance, emergency food and shelter,
agency referrals; job training, and
educational opportunities.
The Corps Community Centers
also offer opportunities for worship,
fellowship, education, and wholesome
recreational activities for all ages.

Local highlights
Last August, a single mother and her two children were brought to The Salvation
Army of Gainesville Center of Hope by a caring church staff member. The church also
sponsored her by paying the initial deposit required in order to occupy a family apartment.
When she arrived at the Center of Hope, the single mom had no job, but was diligent
in her search for employment. She adhered to the rules, regulations, policies, procedures,
and guidelines of the Center of Hope program. She also participated in the Life Skills
classes and the newly implemented Day Services Program offered by The Salvation
Army of Gainesville.
Within a few weeks, she secured a job and began to provide for her family. This single
mom and her two children progressed well during their residency in The Center of
Hope Work Program. They were model residents in every way and did everything
required of them.
They now have found a place of their own and their future looks bright thanks to
the Gainesville Center of Hope.
Mary came to The Salvation Army of Athens after her sister developed severe health
needs and began to require additional support. She relocated to The Salvation Army
shelter to help her sister and to start over.
During her time with The Salvation Army, Mary sought out counseling with Advantage
Behavioral Health Systems. This was the first time she found support and a place she
could talk about the challenges she faced and overcame during the past few years. She
also started to save money, which allowed her to start saving for when she moves into a
new place of her own. Until then, she works at Advantage Behavioral Health System,
allowing her to maintain her personal unit until she is ready to move.
Mary accomplished many things during her time at The Salvation Army of Athens.
She remained sober, took care of her sister after several kidney surgeries, and stabilized
herself in preparation to move into a place of her own. Mary is very thankful to
The Salvation Army for giving her a safe place to stay during her time of transition
and helping her to start her life anew.
