A Letter from the President

A twice-yearly publication of Salesian College Preparatory for its alumni, faculty, staff, students, donors and friends.

It’s always inspiring to watch our graduating seniors at commencement. The air is filled with palpable feelings of happiness and relief, as well as a tinge of anxiety for what the future holds. Mostly, it is a time of promise and change for our young people, and the Class of 2015’s enthusiasm for the future is truly infectious.

Exciting change is also evident throughout our campus this summer. Due to the generosity of parents, alumni, foundations and other benefactors, we have secured funding for the following improvements:

• Phase I of our Science Labs Modernization Project which includes new flooring and lighting of the Biology Lab, complete with new cabinetry, a prep room, and new desks and chairs.

• The gym will have an entirely new look-and-feel with a resurfaced and painted floor, wall padding and bleacher covers.

• A new electrical transformer will be installed to accommodate the increased power needs of the school.

• The Art Room is being refurbished with new tables, drawers and cabinets.

We expect all of these projects to be completed before the fall term begins; you can read more about each of these endeavors in this magazine.

In other changes, I am happy to announce that longtime instructor Matt Janisch has accepted the role of Dean of Students; we are also adding several new courses to our 2015-2016 curriculum including Sports Medicine, French, Dance and ESL.

As a premier college prep institution we continually strive to improve our facilities and our student experience, and I thank you for your support, generosity and trust as we help guide a new generation of students to the next chapter of their lives.

Exactly 119 seniors in the Class of 2015 were called to receive their diplomas and begin the next chapter of their lives. One hundred percent of graduates have been accepted to college and all are now officially members of the Salesian College Preparatory alumni family!

STEM Curriculum Gets Boost with Biology Lab OverhaulKnowledge in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) can be the key to a successful future. In fact, according to researchers at Northwestern University, there is no better investment for the future health and prosperity of this country than STEM education. To that end, Salesian has embarked on the first phase of a multi-year project that will bolster its STEM curriculum. Through a generous $250,000 grant from an anonymous donor, funds were made available to begin the school’s Science Labs Modernization Project, which will result in a complete overhaul of the Biology lab.

Students returning to campus this fall will notice many biology lab improvements, including the following: • Entirely new flooring • A new prep room with storage cabinets, sink and lab refrigerator • High efficiency lighting with sensors and dimming controls • New wood and glass cabinetry throughout • Relocated room entrances and a separate door to new prep room • New state-of-the art student desks and chairs

STEM Curriculum Gets Boost with Biology Lab Overhaul The renovations will provide for different classroom layouts – lecture, small groups, and lab – and allow for more collaborative learning and higher student engagement. Additionally, the new storage and prep space will ensure equipment security and safety. “It is vital that our students have access to state-of-the-art learning resources to prepare them for the challenges of college and beyond,” said Chad Nightingale, chair of the Science Department. “Our department staff is excited for this new lab, and

our students will be the beneficiaries. I want to thank all those who donated to this worthy project.” A fundraising campaign will begin this fall for Phase II of the project, which will include modernizing the chemistry and physics labs. Welcome to the Pride Den!Students returning to campus this fall will notice a marked difference in the gym, the result of a

refurbishment effort that includes modernized bleachers, branded gym padding and an entirely

new floor design. The 1960s-era gym has been revitalized for the present day, with hopes of more

championship action in the years ahead.

“The look-and-feel of our gym has been completely transformed,” said Chad Nightingale,

Salesian’s athletic director. “The Pride Den will be a source of inspiration for Salesian students and

athletes,” he added, “and a source of frustration for our competitors!”

Electrical systems upgrade plannedIn the past 15 years, Salesian College Preparatory has seen a number of campus technology upgrades, including a new computer lab, projectors in the classrooms, a campus-wide wireless network, a server room and an iPad program for every student. The need for energy-efficient power has never been greater. Consequently, school administrators are excited to announce that the campus electrical grid will be upgraded this summer with a new transformer and other equipment.

“This new system will provide the power we need for years to come,” said Henry Moe, Facilities Coordinator. Once installed, the new gear will also give the school the ability to add lights to the football field at a later date and facilitate any future building construction.

Art AppreciationA generous donation from the Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation helps fund new arts equipment

The furniture and storage units were dated, the

learning environment didn’t accommodate new forms

of art, and overall the facilities simply didn’t meet

increasing student interest. That is all changing now,

due to a generous grant from the Dean and Margaret

Lesher Foundation. The money will be used to purchase

and install new tables, drawers and cabinets – badly

needed equipment that will revitalize the department

and greatly improve teaching capacity.

“We are very thankful to the Lesher Foundation for their

support,” said Shushan. “Their donation will allow more

teaching time and maximize the variety of projects

that the art team can integrate into lesson planning.

at the football field was dedicated in his honor; that was subsequently moved and today a common area in the central part of campus is named McDermott Plaza to pay tribute to his life and accomplishments. Since 1975, the McDermott-Driscoll families have seen several significant changes at Salesian, including the admittance of girls, a new mascot, more lay teachers

and new facilities. They’ve found that there is something for everyone at Salesian, whether their interest is focused on academics, arts or sports. After graduating from Salesian, family members have pursued a variety of career paths including working in law enforcement, as company owners and in various sales and management positions.

Kelly and her husband Bill continue to be active at Salesian, whether helping in student recruitment, driving vans, working the football games or tackling other tasks. Their four children – freshman Dominic, and senior triplets Frank, Alexis and Lily will return to school this fall as part of the Salesian student body. “Salesian is special because it has always been a close-knit community”, said Kelly. “The size of the school enables its students to get to know one another on a personal level. Salesian is one big family.”

Gerald Ford was president when Frank McDermott scoured the East Bay for a suitable high school for his son, Jim. It was 1975 and Frank, a graduate of St. Mary’s College High School, was advised by a friend to check out Salesian. In doing so, he found an appreciation for the dedication of the Salesian priests to education. And, as a former football player at USC, Frank was suitably impressed with the school’s highly regarded sports program. The decision was soon made, and, as it turns out, Jim’s enrollment at Salesian began a family legacy that continues to this day. In 1995, twenty years after Frank McDermott first visited Salesian, his daughter Kelly married Bill Driscoll, a Salesian graduate and one of seven brothers in his family who also attended the school. The two families became instantly linked through their Salesian connection, and through the years a total of 14 young scholars from the combined Driscoll-McDermott families have attended Salesian College Preparatory – including four from the Driscoll family that will be in class when school resumes this fall. “All the children from both families attended Catholic elementary schools, and it was very important for our families to continue with a Catholic education”, said Kelly. In the early days, Frank, the owner of a meat com-pany, was a major financial contributor to the school’s athletic programs and tuition scholarship fund, and even donated meat for student sports functions. He was a major figure around campus. Sadly, he passed away in 1979 at the young age of 42. Shortly thereafter, a bench

From Salesian College Preparatory to the Halls of the White Houseby Chad Nightingale Paulette Ocampo’s commitment to our country has taken her to several continents and most recently to the White House, where she currently works. The 1999 Salesian grad is a soldier in the United States Army where she serves as the Ceremonies Operation Officer for the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, D.C. (USAMDW). In her current role, Paulette’s job includes: • Serving as the principal uniformed advisor to the Commanding General, USAMDW on all military ceremonies within the National Capital Region, including ceremonial support to the White House, Pentagon, and Arlington National Cemetery. • Planning, coordinating, and directing ceremonies for the President of the United States, Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of the Army, and the Chief of Staff of the Army. • Supervising the conduct of all Joint and Army Honor Cordons, Arrivals, and Wreath Ceremonies. • Briefing General Officers on their duties during active-duty funerals within Arlington National Cemetery. • Directing the professional development, training, discipline, and well-being of all joint ceremonial service members.

Paulette’s path from Salesian to the White House was circuitous to say the least. Upon graduation from high school, Paulette says she “joined the Army as a way to save money for college tuition

and to serve the country that gave her parents the opportunity to give their children a better way of life.”

As an enlisted person over a ten year period, Paulette was stationed at posts in Korea, Hawaii, Iraq, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class, and earning her B.A. in Criminal Justice and Justice Administration from Hawaii Pacific University, Paulette was selected for Officer Candidate School. Upon commissioning, Paulette was then stationed to Washington, D.C. (Author Chad Nightingale was a former teacher of Paulette Ocampo)

A Birthday Celebration to Remember!

Dear Friends,

At the end of January, Salesian College Preparatory celebrated Don Bosco Week with numerous educational and fun festivities.

The highlight was a field trip to San Francisco as the entire school community was transported to Sts. Peter & Paul Church for a Eucharistic Liturgy celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of St. John Bosco. The Liturgy was presided by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone.

In this special year, we congratulate and honor the Class of 2015. We give thanks to their parents, family, friends, teachers and coaches for their support and accompaniment. With 100 percent of our graduates attending colleges across the nation next year, we are proud of this bright and talented group. We pray that God will continue to bless our young alumni wherever He may lead them.

Operating a modern high school is expensive; costs seem to rise every year. Yet at Salesian we believe it’s imperative to continue to invest in the curriculum improvements, building maintenance and quality staff that have made the school an East Bay jewel for more than 50 years.

Student tuition helps cover some costs, but it represents just a portion of the funds needed to adequately provision the school. Fortunately, we have a broader community that believes in Salesian and our mission, and backs up that belief with financial support.

In the school year 2014-2015 we raised a total of $1,070,727 from parents and guardians, foundations, alumni and other benefactors. It represents an increase of 45 percent from the previous year. Students returning to school this fall will see several significant improvements around campus that will contribute to a richer student experience. In addition, teachers will be outfitted with new iPads for classroom instruction. Moreover, we are able to add some exciting courses to our curriculum.

Certainly, this is all very important in preparing Salesian scholars for the rigors of college. Equally important, however, is fulfilling our primary calling: helping local youth – many of whom are low-income or the first in their families to consider post-secondary education – achieve access to an outstanding Catholic college preparatory institution.

It’s truly wonderful to walk the first floor of the main building and see all the acceptance letters from prestigious colleges and universities around the country, inviting our Salesian seniors to attend their schools. But behind each of those letters is a parent, guardian, alumnus, benefactor or a foundation that helped make that dream a reality.

I ask that you continue your financial support of Salesian and its mission – so that we can continue to unleash the academic and leadership potential that lies in each and every student.

The 24th Annual Salesian College Preparatory Golf Tournament was held

in early May as 144 golfers competed for

prizes and bragging rights. A breezy day

contributed to high scores but didn’t

deter the enjoyment all had at this

annual fundraising event. The fun

continued into the evening as players

were treated to a catered buffet dinner

as well as silent and live auctions.

“I’m pleased to say that the tournament

raised a record $25,000 for tuition

assistance for Salesian students” said

Henry Moe ’89, tournament director.

“It’s a great feeling to play championship

golf on a wonderful course while

supporting a terrific cause.”

“Softball is life – everything else is details,” said legendary Salesian varsity girls softball coach Dee Bonds recently as she announced her retirement, 24 years after first taking the helm of the Salesian squad. One of the school’s winningest coaches ever, Bonds’ teams recorded an impressive 383 victories, 157 losses and two ties. Born and raised in Richmond, Bonds formed a special tie with many of her ballplayers, helping guide them on an off the field. “I am still very close to many of them; I’ve attended their weddings, the baptisms of their children, and we exchange Christmas cards.” On the field, Dee was a strong advocate for hard work and always asked her players to put in the effort required by champions. “Nothing is born in this world without labor” was one of her favorite sayings, and the dedication she demanded paid off handsomely: her teams won five league championships and three state championships (2001, 2013 and 2014). Dee credits the support by parents and athletic director Chad Nightingale as crucial to the success her teams had on the field. For Bonds though, there was more to softball than just winning and losing. “Winning championships was thrilling, but I was just as proud and happy when coaching my daughter Tiffany,” said Bonds. “It was a special time.”

Salesian Magazine: How did you choose Salesian?Vincent Folchi: I believe God opened the door for me to be at Salesian. One day I received a call from AD Chad Nightingale, and after interviewing and learning about the mission of Salesian, I knew it was a place that I’d really enjoy being a part of.

SM: What is your coaching philosophy?VF: I try to build relationships with the players and show concern for them both on and off the field. It really helps players buy into the program when they know that they have coaches that not only know the game, but can relate to them on a personal level.

SM: What were you most proud of this year?VF: I’m most proud of the seniors. They were always ready to answer the bell and contribute, whether in the starting line-up or off the bench.

SM: Any special memory of the season?VF: I’d say our first game against Bentley. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th, we rallied to tie the game at 2. Chris Gonzales came up to bat with the winning run, Cesar Devera on 2nd base. Chris, who was already playing with an injured hand, had a base hit through the right side of the infield, scoring Devera in a walk-off win. I will always remember that game, not only for the excitement, but for being my first varsity win.

SM: Your goals for next year?VF: Obviously our goal every year is to win an NCS championship. I’m excited for the group of juniors coming back and the young talent from the JV level coming up. We have a great opportunity to do something special!

Pezzola Honored as Coach of the YearSteve Pezzola ‘74 was honored as the NorCal Preps Division IV Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. A year after playing in the California state championship title game and seeing McDonald’s All-American star Mariya Moore move on to Louisville, the 2014-2015 Salesian Pride girls team didn’t skip a beat, going 28-4, winning the NCS Division IV title en route to making the Open Division playoffs. Pezzola, who just concluded his sixth season as head varsity coach, shares the honor with his team and coaching staff but is not complacent with the status quo. “I think that, like players, coaches need to get better every year. When seasons end, I try to examine what I can do better during games, what I can do better at practice.” During his tenure Pezzola’s teams have played in three state championship games.

Salesian basketball standout Kian McNair, a point guard who helped lead the Pride to a 28-4 record this year, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Portland State University. Kian averaged more than 12 points, three assists, four rebounds and three steals this season. This fall, Kian will take her hoop skills to the Northwest to compete for the Vikings.

Mellis Hits a MilestoneVarsity basketball head coach Bill Mellis recorded his 400th career win when the Pride cruised past Skyline High School 83-37 in December. Mellis has coached boys basketball at Salesian College Preparatory for 17 years as head coach, posting a 417-139 record during his 16 years as head coach.

One of the San Francisco Bay Area’s elite high school coaches, Mellis has recorded more than 20 wins in each of the past 15 seasons, and his teams have won eight league championships, five North Coast Section Titles, three Northern California Regional Titles and two State Championships. In 2012, Mellis was honored as State Coach of the Year by ESPN. Mellis has had 35 former Salesian players go on to play college basketball.


Dominic DominatesSenior Dominic Tu won the NCS Division II singles title with a 6-2, 6-4 over No. 1 seed Alejandro Serrano Osoba of Cardinal Newman in the finals. Tu, who was unseeded, defeated the No. 2 seed in the semifinals and was 3-0 in the tournament. He finished the season 16-2 in singles matches. He will attend UC Berkeley in the fall.

Zoe Conley ’14, former Salesian star and current California State University Northridge (CSUN) freshman softball pitcher was named an alternate for the USA Junior Women’s National Team. The reigning 2015 Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year and First Team National Fastpitch Coaches Association [NFCA] All-West Region honoree will be under the tutelage of CSUN softball head coach Tairia Flowers, who is the Junior National Team head coach. The team prepares in Oklahoma City for two international tournaments over the summer. Conley’s 19-7, 1.84 ERA, 134 strikeouts in 156.1 innings, coupled with opponents’ batting average of .229 helped see her finish 30th among all eligible Division I pitchers. In her freshman season, Conley became the first CSUN pitcher to earn First Team NFCA All-West Region honors since 1994.

Connie Decuir, 56, who served as Salesian’s Director of Admissions from 2010-2014 passed away suddenly. Mrs. Decuir was a beloved member of the Salesian community and an exemplary ambassador for the school. During her tenure, she welcomed more than 500 freshmen to Salesian, getting to know each of them as they were introduced to high school life. Also, as a Salesian parent, Mrs. Decuir was very active in the Parent Association, including helping coordinate the annual Mother’s Day Brunch.
