FROM THE DESK OF FR. MARK BRAUER �

New Church Year � Blessings to all of you as we enter this

new Church Year! The season of Advent summons us to

the beginning, the abundance of God’s compassion and

mercy frame yet another year for us. With the arrival of

Advent’s first Sunday, we a$end to this mystery one

more %me. Clearly, we are a people whose origins and

des%ny make us curious yet apprehensive about the day

of the Lord’s coming. Our tradi%on declares this as both

an event already accomplished in human history and an

event moving toward fulfillment in the future. Our

worship, formed of word and sacrament, insists that our

encounter with the day of the Lord occurs concretely in

the struggles and tensions, choices, and decisions of

human living.�

�

We are to be prepared for the Lord’s coming. If you’ve

ever fought to keep your eyes open, even during an event

or trip you’ve been an%cipa%ng, you know it requires

more than simple willpower. Body movements, deep

breathing, change in temperature � all these techniques

may or may not prove successful. The darkness of sleep

seems to envelop one’s body. �

�

This image of figh%ng sleep might help us when we

consider how Jesus tried to rally his followers. He wasn’t

concerned about their sleep habits but rather their

alertness to the things of God that were unfolding. �

�

In any age the followers of Jesus some%mes must fight

the urge to rest so comfortably that we fail to recognize

God’s movement among us. It’s easy to be lulled into

complacency by the constant drumbeat of a world that

some%mes holds out creature comforts as “must�haves”

and status seeking as a way of life.�

Instead, the followers of Jesus are to “be vigilant at all

%mes”, watchful, and aware that God’s kingdom of peace

and jus%ce is always in the making. Our preparedness is

as much about a change of heart and mind as it is about

the ac%ons of discipleship. �

�

Fr. Walter J. Burghardt, S. J, wrote the following story.

The story is about staying alert to the promp%ngs of the

Holy Spirit. “The day a2er Thanksgiving Day the New

York Times told of a 33�year�old local cab driver whose

shoulder�length hair was %ed in a ponytail. (Don’t get

distracted by the ponytail!) About five years ago, this

cabby “prayed to God for guidance on how to help the

forgo$en people of the streets who exist in life’s

shadows.” As he recalls it, God replied: “Make eight

pounds of spaghe:, throw it in a pot, give it out on 103

rd

Street and Broadway with no condi%ons, and people will

come.” He did, they came, and now he goes from door to

door giving people food to eat.�

�

I am not asking you to stuff the Big Apple with spaghe:.

But a New York cabby can bring light into your Advent

night. He prayed to God who was there; he listened; he

gave the simple gi2 God asked of him; he gave “with no

condi%ons”; and people responded. Here is your Advent:

Make the Christ who has come a reality, a living light, in

your life and in some other life. Give of yourself…to one

dark soul…with no condi%ons.” May we all respond

graciously to God’s love this new Church Year! �

Advent begins the new church year. The year opens our

eyes and ears to the Christ events in our lives. Advent is

the �me to center ourselves on Jesus the Lord. �

�

Advent has two main parts. The first part begins with

the First Sunday of Advent and con�nues un�l December

16. During these first two weeks of Advent, the church

looks forward to the coming of Christ in final judgment,

which direct our a'en�on to the second coming of

Christ at the end of �me. The second part begins on the

evening December 16 and con�nues un�l the evening of

December 23. During the last two weeks of Advent, the

church prays for seven days the O An�phons, which

direct our a'en�on to the first coming of Christ at birth.�

�

On the First Sunday of Advent, the church begins reading

one of the three synop�c gospels (Ma'hew, Mark, or

Luke) from beginning to end. The Sunday gospel rotates

over a three�year cycle: Ma'hew in cycle A, Mark in

cycle B and Luke in cycle C. This year the Gospel of Luke

or cycle C will be read throughout the year. The Gospel

of John is read every year, especially during the Sundays

of Lent, the Easter Season, on special feast days or in the

summer of cycle B. The cycles begin on the First Sunday

of Advent and end on the last Sunday of the church year,

which is the feast of Christ the King. �

�

Jesus reminds us in the Gospel of Luke for the First

Sunday of Advent to “be vigilant at all �mes and pray

that you have the strength to escape the tribula�ons

that are imminent and to stand before the Son of

Man” (Lk 21:36). Luke speaks how to prepare for the

cosmic, na�onal, or spiritual disturbances at the second

coming of Jesus, and stresses the importance of prayer.�

�

A return to family prayer can be one of the fruits of a

well�celebrated Advent season. Each of us has the

tendency to become caught up in the Christmas rush,

our focus can become distorted, and the meaning of

Christ’s birth can be lost. This year as a family, make

�me to set up an Advent wreath and gather each day for

family prayer. The following prayer could be used un�l

December 16.�

�

“Let us pray, God of power and mercy, the day draws

near when the glory of Jesus will make radiant the night

of the wai�ng world. May the lure of greed not impede

us from the joy which moves the hearts of those who

seek the Savior. May the darkness not blind us to the

vision of wisdom which fills the minds of those who find

Jesus. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

Amen” (1985 Sacramentary p10). �

reports directly to and collaborates closely with the

Parish Business Manager as well as all other parish and

their tax bill while dona�ng to the Parish.�

IRA Rollover � Qualified Charitable Distribu�on:�

The IRA qualified charitable distribu�on (QCD) provides a way for donors 70 ½ and older to receive a tax benefit for

their generosity.� It is beneficial because the QCD will not be included in adjusted gross income and is therefore not

subject to tax.� �A donor can make a QCD of up to $100,000 annually to charitable organiza�ons, and as an added

benefit, the QCD sa�sfies the donor’s required minimum distribu�on.�

�

Gi4s of appreciated securi�es con�nue to be beneficial for donors since they offer significant tax advantages including

income tax deduc�ons and avoidance of tax on capital gains if the donor sells the highly appreciated securi�es.� With

markets remaining at all��me record high levels, many donors may have some highly appreciated securi�es in their

por6olios.� Through a gi4 of appreciated securi�es donors may receive an income tax deduc�on up to the full market

Dear Parishioners,�

�

If you have chosen the St. Hugo Columbarium as the

appropriate final res�ng place for your loved one, we

thank you. St. Hugo’s staff takes great effort in caring for

the Columbarium, and as you may already know, each

year we do semi�annual cleanups in the area. At the �me

of the cleanup, we invite all loved ones to stop by the

Columbarium and pick up mementoes, flowers, statues,

etc. that have been le4 throughout the year. �

�

The next scheduled cleanup will be during the weekend

of December 3, 2021. At that �me, all items will be

removed from each niche, in prepara�on of Christmas

decora�ons. If there is something that you would like to

keep permanently, please remove it before the cleanup.

As a reminder, we ask that only fresh flowers and small

unbreakable items be placed in the Columbarium. At the

�me of this cleanup, all floral arrangements and vases

will be disposed of. We will take any statues/mementoes

and put them in the maintenance garage.�

�

If you are going to put anything out for the Holidays, it

must be placed on top of the niche wall. Nothing can

remain on the pathway because of snow removal.

Anything placed on the pathway will be moved to the

top of the Columbarium wall. Please do not put any glass

vases out or glass statues at this �me. �

�

The final Fall/Winter clean�up will be the weekend of

January 21, 2022. At that �me, everything will be

removed from the Columbarium. Please make sure you

pick up anything that you would like to keep, otherwise

all floral arrangements will be disposed of and any

statues will be placed in the maintenance garage. Please

make sure to label the boDom of all statues with your

name, so it is easier to pick up in the maintenance

garage, if needed. �

With so many cars in the parking lot at one �me, it is vital

that everyone follows the proper dismissal procedures.

Please review and thank you for following the

instruc�ons. �

• Please enter the parking lot at a slow speed and do

not use a cell phone while in the lot.�

• Park in a designated parking space. Do not park in a

handicap spot, in front of the church or wait in a lane

for a car to exit a spot. Addi�onal parking spots can

be found at the lower lot by the Chapel.�

• Use the cross walk when walking to or from the

holding area. Do not walk across the wood chips to

enter or exit the parking lot.�

• For the safety of all, please supervise your children

when wai�ng in the holding area or gathering a/er

dismissal. Running around the lot, climbing trees,

wrestling, etc. is not acceptable.�

• Exit the parking lot at a slow, safe speed. Remember

to exit at the lower lot � the first lower exit is for le/

turns, the second is for right turns. �

• DO NOT EXIT AT THE ENTRANCE.�

• Please be courteous to our staff and follow their

direc�ons. �

LADIES OF CHARITY� THANK YOU!�

It is our pleasure to announce that Ladies of Charity has

once again been awarded a $5,000 grant from the

Catholic Founda�on of Michigan. We are blessed by the

Catholic Founda�on con�nually suppor�ng our Clothes

Closet and Food Pantry. Our project this year will be

focused on re�red religious communi�es that lack

financial resources to meet the nutri�onal and health

care needs of their aging members. While

supplemen�ng their food budget with fresh fruit and

vegetables our hope is to assist those who have served us

in past years and improve their lives with beCer nutri�on.

Our objec�ve is to involve the Ladies of Charity members

and recruit student volunteers on a con�nuous basis

from surrounding area Catholic high schools to introduce

the students to religious communi�es on a personal basis

and fulfill their service hours over the year�long period.

This exposure will be an an introduc�on to these religious

communi�es in their young lives and hopefully

encourage voca�ons in their future life.�
