Classroom Events By Nishant Perla

There are so many things going on in the school. In May the second graders are going to the YSI in Vasona Park. It seems like it’s going to be a super fun field trip.

In Mrs. Bohem’s class, they are currently studying Immigration. They are doing addition and subtraction with regrouping in math. Mrs. Bohem’s class is also studying money, writing, their opinion essay and reading Ralph S. Mouse, by Beverly Clearly. The whole class seems to be having a blast!

Ms. Snelham’s class is doing fantastic learning! They recently went on a field trip to BioSITE Environmental science on April 23. The class is writing a delicious opinion essay about M&M’s and Skittles. Ms. Snelham’s class is presenting their biography reports on June 1st at the wax museum. (The entire 3rd grade is doing this.) The class is studying Technology and Innovation. Some people that they are studying right now are Thomas Alva Edison and Alexander Graham Bell. Mystery Science is teaching them about sound, communication, and improvements that have been made.

Mrs. Hutchison is teaching her class about the missions that were built all around California. Instead of making pamphlets or posters like years in the past, they are writing reports about their assigned mission. They are also getting ready for SBAC testing.

The fifth graders are reaching a super fun part of the year. They are having Colonial Day May 11th. The whole fifth grade gets to dress up in Colonial costumes and play fun games. The fifth grade gets to tour their new middle school… Rolling Hills! The fifth graders have their promotion on June 12th. It will be sad that they are leaving Marshall Lane, but they are really excited for Middle school.

In Mrs. Rose’s class, the students are preparing for the annual Writing Faire! They are also preparing to do SBAC testing as are most classes. The fantastic book they are reading in class is The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Mrs. Rose’s class gets to Beta test a new Mystery Science component called Chemical Magic. It seems like everybody around school is learning amazing and interesting things!

Dream By: Noah Hirsch

Chapter 3: Breaking and Entering In the light of the moon, Gabe and Hanna staggered past coffee shops, houses, gas stations, and schools, which gave them a lot of time to talk. Gabe decided that it was probably best to tell his sister about his dream. He told her about hearing the sound, getting lost, searching for the sound, seeing the fire, and then waking up. He asserted, “I think it was real.” Hanna made it pretty obvious that she thought Gabe was going insane. “No, seriously. I was sweating in my dream and then in real life!” he replied.

Hanna still thought that he was crazy, so she tried to change the subject, “We should probably find a shelter before it gets too cold.” Gabe agreed, and they began looking for a temporary place to stay. About a half hour into their search, Gabe whined, “I’m getting tired, let’s just stay at our neighbor’s house.”

“The officials will find us!” “The officials will keep us safe!” “In a foster home, Gabe! They will keep us safe... in a foster home! Don’t you want to

keep looking for our own parents instead of being given new ones!” Gabe didn’t answer. He never was happy when things even slightly didn’t go his way.

For this reason, Hanna often called him “Greedy” Gabe. It wasn’t a very creative name, but it was all that she could come up with. Gabe obviously didn’t like this name, so it naturally began fights. Getting into fights was one of the only things that Hanna and Gabe were good at together. Before the fire they “hated” each other, but searching for their parents forced them to get along. The first decision that they had ever agreed on was made that night. The decision that they made was this: the two siblings were going to hide in their school for the rest of the morning, knowing that nobody would find them on the campus over the weekend. Nobody. From then, they would decide where to stay for the rest of their journey.

Getting to the school wasn’t much of a problem, but when you forget one crucial detail, almost everything can go wrong.

As the two of them reached the fence leading into the school, they remembered that the janitor locks the entrance up every day at five o’ clock at night. Because of their terrible memory, they broke the law. Hanna hoisted Gabe up over the enormous fence, and then he unlocked it from the inside. They snuck into the school and looked around for somewhere warm to spend the rest of the morning. Gabe suggested staying in the cafeteria and Hanna agreed. But just like the entrance… that was locked too! Hanna knew Gabe was weird enough to collect paperclips, so she asked him if he had any on him. Of course, he replied, “Yes, but –“

“Thanks!” Hanna unraveled a paperclip until it looked like a metal strip and she stuck it into the keyhole of the cafeteria door. She twisted it around until they heard a “Pop!” Gabe slowly opened the door and they walked inside. The warmth of the room created a bubble around Gabe and Hanna, making them feel as if they were at home. Gabe walked through the darkened room until he found the steps leading up to the stage. He suggested that it looked like a nice spot to sleep, even though he was too worried to sleep. After having his dream about the fire, Gabe seemed pretty on edge about closing his eyes.

Gabe walked into the kitchen to look for food as Hanna set up their sleeping arrangements. She grabbed a few blankets and pillows out of the donation boxes for their school and laid them out on the stage floor.

She was already ten minutes finished when Gabe lumbered back to the stage holding three pizza boxes and bread sticks. As he walked, the piece of pizza hanging in his mouth bounced against the bottom of his chin, making it extremely dirty and covered in pizza sauce. Hanna’s teeth grinded as she saw what a slob Gabe was, but she was too hungry to lecture him.

Once they were finished eating, the siblings went to bed. Gabe spent around twenty minutes tossing and turning, until he finally asked Hanna if she was still awake. She nodded her head, so Gabe continued, “About the conversation we had earlier… I have a strange feeling that I started the fire.”

“How?” Hanna asked.

“Well, I told you that I dreamed about fire and all of a sudden, our house was in flames,” Gabe slowly said. “And also, I dreamed that I lost our family, and now Mom and Dad are gone.”

Hanna questioned, “If your dreams become real… and you lost Mom and Dad and me, then how am I still here.”

“Well, I don’t know. But… maybe we have some sort of… super power.” Hanna laughed and then closed her eyes. It took Gabe a little longer to fall asleep as the sunrise

began to show through the windows of the cafeteria, but still, he managed to. With all the crazy activity going on that morning, it seemed almost impossible for Gabe not to sleep.

Sleeping was one of the worst possible things that he could have done though. The dream that he had was worse than the last one. I don’t think that I know anybody who had the capabilities that Gabe had. He had the worst nightmare that anybody could ever imagine…
